“As far as his stand up game, we’ll kill him. If we can keep the fight standing up, if he chooses to fight us like a man, we’ll dominate him…He throws one punch after the other. He’s very predictable. He makes the same moves every time. He’s very common. His boxing game is weak. From what I can see, I think Andre’s going to be sharper. I think we’re going to knock him out.”

– World renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach, who has been working with Andrei Arlovski over the past year or so to help him improve his striking, stirs the pot once again when he tells MMAWeekly that the “Pitbull” will do what no other competitor has done in over eight years across the span of 26 professional fights: Defeat the reigning WAMMA world heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko when they collide on January 24 at Affliction: “Day of Reckoning.”

I sure hope so. I do really wanna see Fedor really fight for this win and not just have it handed to him on a plate. Fedor is just so good at imposing his will that anyone in there with him is almost like a back seat passenger going where he chooses to go.

I really hope to see both at their very best to make this one of the best ever fights.

With so many potential all time classic fights 2009 is gonna be another awesome year for MMA and its still only January!

I do think this one will be GREAT. I think Fedor and all the hipe has never fought someone like AA. I will root for AA. But if Fedor wants to be taken as one of “THE BEST EVER” he MUST defeat AA.

God I hope AA wins!!! I really wonder what they will all say.

My major concern for AA is where is his confidence at. He knows Fedor lost in Sambo so maybe he has some confidence stemming from that, but that just may have pissed Fedor off enough so he is training harder than ever? It just seems like if Fedor is ever going to lose it will be now!

I like how all of you are ragging on roach. As usual, Mania has skewed this quote to stir the pot. Read the actual article people, Roach isn’t talking like such a douche this quote would have you believe. He pays respect to Fedor’s ground game and says he’s very clever. He also said “If we keep it standing, I think we will knock him out”.

i DONT UNDERSTAND HOW SO MANY PEOPLE CAN WANT TO SEE fEDOR LOSE? There is no classier and better fighter on this planet. HOw do u people root against him? I dont get it!
Thats just Hate man. Even if Arlovski were to beat Fedor….what would that mean? No one is even close to having the resume that Fedor does. Does 1 loss make him lose his top spot? Of Course not. He would have to lose at least 2 fights in 1 year to lose his top ranking. He is Light years ahead of every other heavyweight in terms of accomplishments.

I am a HUGE Arlovski fan, but I dont see Fedor losing to anyone. Once Fedor cracks you in your face with a lightning quick diving lead hook. pitbull will turn into a poodle….Remember Tim Sylvia?

By the way, Fedor doesnt use traditional wrestling takedowns. More hips involved. Andre’s wonderful sprawl wont work.

I LOVE both fighters, but I dont really see Fedor losing a fight. Especially not a motivated Fedor.

How could you guys root for Arlovski.. Andre has 1 foot out of the mma door. He is going tohead over to boxing. Whats the point of Andre being the only guy to beat Fedor and run off into boxing? If one of the few great heavyweights like Andre leave mme….Then it becomes even more important for Fedor to continue to win!

I don’t see much wrong with this quote, although “fighting like a man” meaning not taking it to the ground is pretty lame.

Arlovski has damn good standup, is one of the few heavyweights with speed that rivals Fedor’s, and is pretty elusive with good takedown defense. Where I’m not convinced is whether or not his heart is in this. I mean, he’s definitely more talented than Sylvia (imo). But he just seemed timid and scared in their third fight, just letting himself lose. Maybe he’s afraid to get KOd again?

If you gave Nog’s heart to Arlovski, he’d still be ufc champion.

Freddy is attempting to bait Fedor into playing into Arlovski’s strengths and, if he knew the fighter Fedor is, he wouldn’t bother because it is not how fighting works and it never has, even, ironically enough, in boxing ie boxing: you might have a very good jab mover against a shorter stockier guy. If said stocky guy sits on the end of jabber mover’s range, he’ll get destroyed. Thus he has to cut the ring and close the distance so he is at an advantage. in mma, the fighter has more weapons to choose from and when you’re fighting guys at this level you would have to be extremely ignorant and stupid not to use them. Orf course, extremely ignorant people don’t get to this level (just aswell because there would be many more ring/cage deaths). Fedor is a truly great fighter and great fighters don’t fight with their egos. If Freddy actually meant this (’Fight like a man’ sounds like something from a 40s b grade movie)then, sadly, his parkinsons disease has eaten his brain.

Yea a lot of stand up fighters use the “fight like a man” type comments kind of insinuating that the ground game is for pu**ies, but its part of fighting; unfortunatley AA will have to deal with the clinch game/ground game; this isn’t a boxing match its MMA Freddy! I don’t know who I’m pulling for in this match up anymore, ever since the recent news that Arlovski is moving over to boxing I feel betrayed.. I’m starting to lean toward Fedor; AA has let me down =(

i give an edge to boxers in a real fight because they are from the streets and not because of theyre hands–which is sooo limited..did tyson train to bite during his boxing days…noooo–he learned it in surviving the streets..

He is better than Fedor when it comes to boxing. But where Fedor has the advantage is his much better ground game. Even if it doesn’t go to the ground, this has helped him in the past. The fear of a takedown is a pretty powerful tool. Just look at how terrible Leko, and AMAZING K1 kickboxer, did in mma. He was thrashed in the standup by Japanese cans with no standup game.

A pure striker will never be as effective if he’s fighting a good wrestler and is constantly worried about the take downs. There is no doubt that AA has better technical boxing, but this is not boxing, this is MIXED MARTIAL ARTS. Freddie is trying to bait Fedor here, but seriously, he shows a lack of confidence in AA’s grappling ability. The fact of the matter is grappling is part of the game, it wouldn’t make a Fedor victory any less legit. If AA doesn’t want to grapple with Fedor, it’s up to him to keep Fedor off of him, period. If he wants to keep it striking, then he better generate power and accuracy while backing up, or he better catch Fedor on the way in. Fedor will use punches to close distance, and if he does damage even worse for AA, but he will try to clinch and sweep. Then go for GnP or a sub. This may be very predictable, but can it be stopped? AA has some tools that may help him here, and he just might pull off the upset. But this is a weak attempt at mind games. Unless he is trying to fool everyone, and actually plans to take Fedor down, but I don’t know why he would believe such a thing would work.

Comment by Da Monkey
2009-01-07 12:54:05

I think Matt Linland was the closest to making this happen, catching Fedor on the way in. He hurt him and had him set up for the slam before, Fedor held on to the top rope numerous times, before regaining his composure and turning it up. I think had the ref. pulled his arms off of the rope like they would have any other fighter, Linland might have won that fight. Arlovski has a good chance if he can catch him on the way in and have the balls to follow through if he thinks or actually does catch him with one. Fedor has proved me wrong time and time again. I though Sylvia with the big reach, jab, and good take down defense was going to catch him and he made quick work of him. I think Sylvia has better stand up then AA and looked what happened to him. As much as I want to see Fedor Lose, see AA be theone to beat him, the magic 8 ball says chances are slim to none.

Sounds like they’re trying to get into Fedor’s head. This ain’t boxing Freddie?, this is MMA.

I like both fighters but I’m leaning towards Fedor simply because he is more well rounded. Freddie is probably right about Andrei killing him in a boxing match but this ain’t a boxing. Fedor moves like a lightweight and always has PLAN B,C,and D. From what I see with Arlovski once he gets hit or he’s put in an uncomfortable situation he gets tentative. Like when he fought Silva the 3rd time and Werdum he didn’t look like no pitbull. He was gunshy and afraid of getting KO’d.

I wouldn’t be surprise if AA wins but I think Fedor has it because he has more in his arsenal. Either way its going to be a great fight.

This month is going to be one of the best months for MMA!!!!!

Penn vs. Pierre

There’s been a lot of talk about AA’s boxing, and that’s good, but I’m not a fan of the boxing-like trash-talking that’s going on. I think Fedor’s greatness lies in his very well-rounded skill-set. Yeah AA boxing might be superior but his ground game last time I saw sucked. Hell Nelson got him on his back, and even though either guy didn’t do much I will guarantee if Fedor gets him in the same position the fight will be over sooner than later.

Roach does not know jack about mma. This is not boxing it is a fight. All those times in a boxing match when the ref says break well thats a throw thats a takedown thats an elbow a knee. And where does he get off saying fight like a man and stand? Pure boxing does not do well in mma. For one thing when you stand like that you get leg kicked, picked up an slammed, etc… any spaz can throw punches. It takes REAL skill to take someone down and choke them out or isolate and arm or leg and break it. Boxing is one tiny aspect of fighting. The best boxers in the worls would get killed in K-1 or in mma if they faught the best k-1 or best mma. GSP vs Roy Jones in a fight? BJ Penn vs Oscar in a fight? Taken down and choked for both.

We have a guy in our gym who will fight any boxer with out the use of his hands other than to block with. He ran his mouth about how a great kicker beats a pure puncher. He was right he humiliated every boxer in the gym. He never got hit in the head or body and never threw a punch. Just front kicks, round side etc. Didn’t even throw knees. Only kicking and good defense head movement foot work etc..
It was amazing. Local champian boxers got waxed. Ko’d usually within 2 minutes. The leg hits harder and has more reach than the arm. Look how many guys Crocop dropped with one kick. Then add in jiu jitsu, wrestling, judo, muay thia….boxing is not fighting it does not trump all.

Tell me how the f#ck CC (or any fighter for that matter) is going to “destroy” a boxers legs if (and when) the boxer stands on the inside and presses forward? I’m not saying a boxer would win in an all out fight, but “hatteras’” example of kicks of a fighter vs punches from a boxer is stupid…you can’t kick a guy with any force if he is 6″ away from you hitting you with 8 punch combos. What would CC do?…through 45 teeps to the guys gut to keep him away?

Picture this…

Manny Pacquiao (boxing) vs BJ Penn (only kicking)

Pacman by brutal KO - First round.

You should try it. It’s pretty fun actually.

Try to ignore the MMA “fans”. Someone could write an article about how a MMA fighter’s fart is stronger than a boxers and some fanboy would post about how an MMA fighters fart would KO any other competitor in any other combat sport…(with his hands tied behind his back…blindfolded, and his feet tied together).

ROFL funny how all the ufc fans want AA to win just so they can say Fedor is overrated!

Fedor>AA even if AA gets lucky once he wont get lucky twice.

Fedor will beat AA at his own game.

He outstruck Cro Cop…who is a much better striker then AA. Especially at that time.

He had no problems taking to Nog to the ground.

Fight like a man. I think Freddie should stick to boxing. This is MMA. You do what ever it takes to win. You are judged by winning fights and putting people away wheather it is a toe hold or Ko. Fedor should handle this fight pretty easily after Andrei’s last couple performances. Fedor is probably a better stand fight givin the rules. Andrei is not the same fighter he once was but is still top 5.

Freddie Roach can talk all crap he wants to as far as boxing is concerned. But this is MMA. He maybe the Trainer of the Year for Boxing but MMA is simply not boxing. period. He can hit Fedor but what happens when they are on the ground. These questions can only be answered during the fight itself. And please Freddie should stop saying that to fight like a man is to simply to stand up. Fighting like a man is also equivalent to submitting your opponents or ground and pounding him. As far as I can say, he may mean a lot to boxing but in the world of MMA he is just like every MMA Maniacs here in this site. =p

its gonna be a good fight!! however its hard to not go with fedor here. hes absolutely dominant. wha boasts the record he has?? NOBODY!! fedor has fought a good mix of “cans” and an impressive roster of legitimate contenders and even a few legends if you will. i am a big fan of AA, and although i havet seen that much out of fedor, i respect him immensely for his practically perfect mma career. i mean cmon, u have to give it to the guy for achieving such an incredible record in a sport like MMA.
however, i dont necessarily agree that based on his record fedor should be pound for pound best in the world. that to me is ridiculous. lets face it, generally speaking the last place your going to look for the most talented mma fighter is HW. in terms of dominance maybe, but fighting in MW,WW, or in some cases LHW is IMO far more challenging and more atleticism and pure talent come into play.
im not trying to knock fedor however, hes a true legend in the sport. in my humble opinion he has achieved far more than someone like gracie .he hasnt done it in the public eye so much, but he has quitly dominated mma for a long time, unlike gracie who indeed pioneered the sport, but failed to evolve and suceed for an extended period of time like fedor.

on this very topic I just watched a pre fight interview of marcus davis saying that who ever looks to take the fight to the ground or grapple is a pussie

ya ok…………..so when marcus davis is tapping out due to a sub who is the real pussie

BJJ or JJ or what ever the hell you want to call it is the most dominant dimension in MMA and always will be

I cant wait for this fight…Stand up, I say Fedor will knock arlovski out. I think this will be a huge clinch war and fedor will dominate and push the pace. Only way Arlovski is going to win is if he catches him early on and attcks like a pittbul. If this turns into a slow paced tim sylvia vs AA fight i will be pissed.

2009-01-07 09:03:04

I hate it when a fighter is extremely respectful to his opponent, but his manager/trainer/promoter is not! AA has long been one of my top 3 favorite fighters! I believe it is likely that he’ll beat Fedor! But, Cockroach shouldn’t piss Fedor off and give him something to prove! Like him or not, Fedor is always a respectful gentlman in his interviews!

Here are some news from Fedor. I cant post the whole thing here, I dont even know if its allowed. But here is a sample.

Question: During a recent press conference to promote “Day of Reckoning,” Andrei Arlovski questioned the sincerity of a statement you made last month regarding the your loss at the Combat Sambo Championships. His exact quote was the following: “After his loss in the Sambo tournament, I think he’s messed up a little bit.

Fedor
MAYBE ANDREI IS TRYING TO CONVINCE HIMSELF THAT I HAVE BEEN WEAKENED IN SOME WAY. BUT IT IS NO MATTER. WE ARE NOT FIGHTING SAMBO WITH ANDREI. THE ONLY 100% I AM SURE ABOUT IS THAT I WILL BE 100% READY TO FIGHT MMA AGAINST ANDREI. AND THAT IS THE ONLY THING I CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW.

Question: One of Arlovski’s trainers, famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach, questioned some aspects of your standup from a technical boxing perspective, most notably your footwork. Do you feel Roach’s criticisms are relevant to MMA?

Fedor:
THE BEAUTY ABOUT MMA IS THAT EVERY FIGHTER HAS HIS OWN UNIQUE STYLE AND PREFERENCES. BUT IT IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST. WE FIGHT TO SEE WHICH FIGHTER’S APPROACH PREVAILS. BUT AGAIN, WE ARE NOT BOXING AND WE ARE NOT FIGHTING SAMBO. WE FIGHT MMA.

Question: You train in your home town of Stary Oskol, which is very isolated from the rest of the world. With so many world class camps popping up that have some many top coaches and training partners, why do you choose to keep things simple?

MY TRAINING IS NOT SIMPLE. I BELIEVE I TRAIN HARDER THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD. AND THE STRENGTH AND POWER I OBTAIN CAN ONLY BE HERE IN RUSSIA. I FEED OFF MY SURROUNDINGS AND I DO NOT BELIEVE I WOULD BE AS PREPARED IF I TRAINED SOMEWHERE ELSE. I LIKE TO HAVE EVERYTHING I LOVE AROUND ME WHEN I TRAIN.

Great technique is a very valuable tool to have, but like we’ve seen in so many Fedor fights, good technique and a good game plan only works until you get punched in the face. Yes Fedor’s style is technically lacking, but his mindset, ferocity, stamina, and sheer punching power are undeniably far superior to that of AA and in my opinion most every other HW in the game. I mean call me crazy but for the first 10 seconds Tim Sylvia looked confident and prepared….then he got hit….and just by the look on his face you could see the suprise in his reaction to Fedor’s power and ferocity.

Fedor in the first round.

Roach is an idiot.
Then again AA has been impressive the last 5 or so fights… SARCASM ALERT…

Fedor always sticks it out & never looks like hes in danger.
Brock vs Fedor is a must.

Randy and nog well that makes sense…

I would say grappling is getting to be less and less of what MMA is about. It seemed like for a time things were all about ground control and Chuck was the odd ball. Now we have tons of awesome strikers that have mint ground games defence.

What comes around goes around and the day of the Grappler will reappear in 3 or 4 years again.

God I hate watching a PPV and nothing but 1 minute matches and all are kos where is the variety…

I guess thats ok UFC wont have to pay out for submission of the night. HA HA

Never expect Rashad to get that bonus.
