Quoteworthy:

“Brock Lesnar is gonna be tough for anyone to beat. He’s a freak. He’s got lunch box size hands, He’s a huge guy. Before he was a professional wrestler, he was a real wrestler, a 2000 All-American NCAA National Champion. Now that he’s fighting, he’s completely 100 percent dedicated, he’s a dangerous motherf*&^$*…he’s gigantic and he moves super fast. He’s a sponge, all he does all day is train. You get a guy like that, once he learns a few things, he becomes incredibly dangerous. He’s superhuman.”

Joe Rogan, UFC color commentator and host of the new CBS comedy ‘Game Show in my Head’, sounds off on the future of Brock Lesnar now that the pasty-faced goliath and his herculean hamhocks are holding the UFC heavyweight title hostage. That of course could all change when he faces newly minted UFC Interim Heavyweight champ Frank Mir later this Spring.

i have to disagree- im not saying that he can’t sub lesnar, but lesnar isn’t dumb, he has alot of money to get the best trainers, theirfor they’ll prepare him to not get too excited and bullrush mir. this is gonna be a stand up fight and i see lesnar Ko mir. here’s why.. lesnar has the reach advantage and the size and strength.. the reason why Mir boxing looked so great against Nog is cuz nog did nothing, its not like they where going back and forth exchanging to show mir’s head movement and boxing skills, put me up against A.Silva and i’ll Ko’ his ass if A.Silva just stands their the way nog did against Mir. i hope mir can pull it off, but i wouldn’t be suprized if brock win’s.

Yeah thats the way I see it! Everyone talks about MIr’s “improved stand up”, I dont know what all the fuss was about. All he did the entire time against Nog was throw the same basic 3 hit combo, ending in an uppercutt….over and Over again! That BS aint going to work against Brock. Brock has a super long reach advantage over almost anyone he will ever fight. He is going to be tagging Mir up, and we all know Frank doesnt like getting hit in the face. I honestly believe that in a stand up war, Brock will destroy Mir. Mir is going to have to get the fight to the ground but I really dont see anyway of doing so. Brock can keep the fight standing for as long as he wants. Some of y ou might say that Mir can pull guard and try to drag Brock to the ground, but I think Brock is too strong for that. If Mir tries it, I see Brock picking him up and Donkey Konging him through the mat!

Brock is going to be the unified champion.

Would anyone like to try and guess what the odds ar going to be for this fight?

Also, off topic but what Nationality is Frank Mir? German? I cant figure out what kind of a name Mir is.

I think it’s Dutch, like Todd Gak. (guess the reference). Seriously, one fight with competent striking does not mean that standing in front of a truck like Lesnar is a good idea. Mir’s best shot to win is if he can put Lesnar on his back, and I don’t know how Mir would accomplish that when he gives away so much strength and wrestling ability. Lesnar’s strategy should be as follows: Grab Mir and slam his 250-pound ass to the mat. Make him stand back up. Repeat as necessary.

It was more Lesners inexperience than Mirs skill that lost him the first fight. Mir will not win a second time. I doubt he makes it out of the first round. Once he loses to Brock he will be exposed for the overrated fighter that he is and slip back down the rankings and right back out of the top 5 where he belongs. And no I am not a Lesner fan, a win over Herring and a win over Randy which he got because because of his size and power hasn’t convinced me yet, but all Lesner can do is improve and get better. When I see him take on someone like Gonzaga or Carwin or take some solid punches and kicks off of someone like Kongo, then I will start thinking the sun shines out of his ass like everybody else does.

Am I the only one fed up of hearing about Brock’s lunch box sized hands? We get it. He is a freak of nature.

For me there are sooo many heavyweights both in the UFC and outside who would tool Brock if they fought today – Mir, Velasquez, dos Santos, Gonzaga, Carwin, Overeem, Fedor, Arlovski, Barnett, Manhoef etc. Hell even a few Light Heavies could KO Brock. All he has done so far is beat a an old dude who should be a 205er, and landed a lucky punch on Herring and smothered him for 15 minutes.

I still can’t believe a guy whos UFC career stood at 1-1 got a title shot.

“Lunchbox size hands” is a lot more bearable than hearing that douche bag, Mike Goldberg, use “wicked” to describe everything or hear him say something like “Forrest lands 70% of his leg kicks” or repeat St. Pierre’s take down percentage every 5 seconds. Goldberg needs to do us all a favor and walks his ass into on-coming traffic.

Yeah I added his name to the wrong list… Still, he fights at Lightheavyweight as well and has fought and beaten several clear heavyweights before. If Hunt’s chin couldn’t stand up to Melvin, I doubt Brock’s will. Was just trying to say that it didn’t require just 250 pound monsters to beat Brock in my opinion. Someone smaller with KO power could very well do the same.

@ DaneJa!260

Yeah, Goldberg adds nothing of value. His observations are redundant at best and annoying at worst. “Silva, 2 years his elder, virtually everything else is identical” ARGH!

I don’t think going for a KO against Lesnar is the best strategy. Obviously there is very little history of Lesnar but I’ve seen every fight he has been in and I’ve never seen him rocked. I am not saying it is impossible EVERYONE can be knocked out but the best strategy to beat Lesnar as Frank Mir showed us is to submit him.

Most heavyweights aren’t submission specialists but guys like Fedor and Mir are, or at least they can be; Mir just destoryed Nog on his feet. They also have the size and strength to pull it off on Lesnar.

It would take a great deal of experience and confidence to go toe to toe with Lesnar and go for the KO. Unless there is someone out there that can match him in size and strength I would advise every fighter to take a different approach.

2009-01-04 14:32:51

Exactly, It’s not like Lesnar hasn’t pretty much dropped everyone he’s fought with one punch. It’s physics, 280 lbs with that much speed behind it is a hell of a lot of force. The average jaw just can’t handle many of those kind of punches. Brock has shown he can land them consistently too. There might be some truth to Brock’s claim that his head is like a ballpeen hammer. I think someone like GG is a big threat to Brock, because the size difference isn’t that much and GG has vicious leg (and high) kicks that come out of nowhere. His punching power is pretty sick also and if it goes to the ground he could submit Brock.

I hate hearing these people talk about his record! THATS NOT WHY HE GOT A TITLE SHOT….ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY!!! What is the UFC…a business…and what are do you do with a business? MAKE MONEY! It had nothing to do with his record! They are also sold on his potential. He might not be perfect now but he is still a handful for any heavyweight…even Fedor. Im not saying he would win but there isnt a heavyweight out there that is going to just walk through him. He is such a rare find of talent, speed, power and athleticsm! You have to capitolize on that type of selling power while it is hot. The Couture vs Lesnar fight was the correct fight. There will be plenty of time to see Couture v Nog and Lesnar vs Carwin or Gonzaga…

Now quit hating on the guy and hold off on your judgements until he fights Mir for the second time…thats when you see just how hard a guy is working! Lesnar has improved with every fight, so now that he is champ lets see if its even more visable.

Ive got 100 bucks that says if Lesnar fights Fedor in a year or more he will wreck that chubby russian!

get real Rogan. Talk about your overrated statments. Anyone who knows anything about MMA can see right through Lesnar’s game. He has a long way to go to prove himself and was gassed after the first round against Couture. He is one dimensional and i do not see him progressing very far in the future. Would love to see him fight Gonzaga and see how far he gets after a few brutal leg kicks. Lesnar = cartoon character with limited skills. His reighn will be short lived.

I agree that he gets a lot of hype, but saying he’s one dimensional and that you can see right through his game… co’mon man. I’m guessing you think his wrestling skills make him one dimensional? Brock’s got great ground skills. Not even once during the fight with Herring was Heath able to get into full guard. That takes away a ton of submissions for a BJJ guy like Gonzaga. And with Brock’s 81″ reach, throwing leg kicks is not the smartest thing to do. Dropping the hands with power kicks would be costly. So what do can you see exactly that makes you think this? If you know MMA, then you should at least acknowledge the man is extremely talented and NOT one dimensional. He’s completely dominated two great HW’s in his last 2 fights. Did you see what Couture did to Gonzaga?! What do you think will make Gonzaga’s fate different and not worse? Brock didn’t even fully connect with his punch! If anything, I would have to say that you’re the one who’s MMA knowledge is one-dimensional.

Comment by EMM

Knowledge is the key word. Have been involved with hand to hand combat sports for over 20 years. Have been involved with wrestling when Brock was only 2 and still am as a wrestler , coach and referee . In other words my knowledge of MMA is strong. This is only my opinion Of Lesnar at this time. I don’t like Brock, but saying he has no skills or that he’s a farce is silly. He has skills that no one else does. They are just unusual. several wrestlers have converted to MMA and done very well. I don’t know why it’s strange at all to have a 2000 NCAA champ convert to MMA and do well. Does the fact that he did WWE negate the rest of his accomplishments for some people? And he’s significantly faster and more coordinated than any freakishly big man we’ve seen in the past. Nothing would delight me more than to be wrong about this guy, but I don’t see him being exposed. If he loses to someone by some fundamental error, I don’t see it happening twice. I think the window to beat Lesanar gets smaller every day. Here’s wishing Mir good luck.

Brock proved against Randy that his size and strenght mixed with the skill that he has is going to be hard for guys to handle, it clearly made up for the skill differance between he and Randy. I cheered for Randy but picked Brock in my Fantasy League and Randy did ok, got a few shots in here and there but was clearly out strenghted in that one. I also think that if Mir would not have locked in that leg when he did then that fight could have ended differantly as well, he was getting pounded there for ahwile (props for hanging in there). Personally I would love to see Frank knock Brock out or just have Frank win however. Brock is a beast boys, like him or hate him he is legit and will be a factor for awhile regardless.

There’s a few haters, but a lot of guys that oppose Brock’s champ status is b/c they don’t think he deserved a shot yet. Not that’s he’s not capable. I agree. Do I think that Brock deserved a title shot after his third fight, hmmm, Im not sure, all I know is he was given the opportunity and he jumped on it, like most people would have. I hate hearing people say he doesnt deserve it. The guy has serious wrestling skills, size, and power. Look, Randy left for a year, and Frank Mir lossed that fight to Brandon Vera, which probably set him back, and it was a fight he probably could have one easily, but he decided to start training hard and get serious about fighting again after that fight. So in the meantime, the UFC brought in Lesnar to revive the heavyweight division and look what happened…All I can say is, you snooze you lose. Randy and Frank can blame themselves for the current situation in the heavyweight division.

You are over here trying to rip on Brock ,but you have seen Dos Santos once and you are ready to crown him the guy who is going to take the belt from Mir.Are you serious ,he beat an overrated out of shape Werdum, but he is the next champ. You could be right ,I will not lie ,but you have been ripping Brock for his past and lack of experiance ,but in the same breath, you build up a guy that you really do not have a clue about.

You guys saying Lesnar got gassed against Couture need to get an eye check up now. He ALWAYS looks like that while he’s fighting, he looked “gassed” against Herring, and even against Mir, but he was fucking going full steam the entire time without trouble. He’s been through a lot worse than being leaned on by a 220 pounder, I highly doubt he was fatigued by that fight at all.

What did I miss? Mir beats Lesnar, Lesnar beats Herring and then Lesnar fights Couture for the title. What happened in the meantime?
