First of all, Manhoef is a BEAST, I would love to see this guy in the UFC. Secondly, WAMMA is ridiculous! And for that matter, so is any ranking system that doesn’t have BJ Penn as the #1 LW in the world. Its a no brainer! BJ would KILL Aoki, no doubt about it. Aoki cant strike at all and he isnt taking BJ down, so game over! Lastly, HMC blows and so do K1 rules.
I have a feeling that if the UFC didn’t protect him by giving him strikers he could go the way of Houston Alexander.

I said this in another thread in response to Kevin but I’ll re-state it here as well. BJ is that dude and he has a distinct advantage in the stand-up against a guy like Aoki but…..Aoki is aggressive and almost always finds a way to get it to the ground. You should really try and check out at least 3-4 of Aoki’s fights and you’ll see his ground game is one to be feared. I haven’t seen them all but I’ve seen enough of his fights to be a believer. BJ Penn as great as he is should win this fantasy match but nothing about it will be easy. The ground transitions would be like none we’ve ever seen.

If BJ Penn were any more overrated, his name would be Brock Lesnar. He is nowhere near as good as Anderson Silva but somehow people like to say he is the p4p king. This is the guy that got stopped by Matt Hughes not that long ago.

You make a good point about Aoki. I’m not gonna jump outta the window and say BJ’s overrated but his offensive BJJ might be a tad under-used. I think he should step it up a notch and use more transitions if his 1st attempt goes sour. He’s done it before but not regularly. It needs to be a constant IMO.
bill, everybody knows about the rib injury in that fight i hate when people bring up penn-hughes 2 and try to use it against bj. he schooled hughes the whole fight up till that point.

Ya, it is a matter of taste. Personally I was board. I found my self scrubbing the video to see who won and to see if I might have missed any action. I would have liked to see Mark Hunt. I have always liked watching him fight, but his performance was pretty weak. Then the Manga Masked man with the spandex suit…? Wow! I was happy that Bob at least knocked him out. Seemed almost like a pro wrestling event.

Joachim Hansen, Eddie Alvarez, JZ Calvan..those alone show that he’s fought more highly-talented lights than BJ ever has. Aoki’s BJJ is better than Penn’s (who’s BJJ is the MOST overrated) and he’s not much of a pussy at all. Watch more of his fights, then complain.

JG and some others who posted know nothing about Aoki beyond this fight and have no knowledge of Alvarez either. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a surprise that Alvarez was able to mount and they’d also understand why that’s not a bad spot for a guy like Aoki…obviously.
