Former Elite XC female superstar Gina “Conviction” Carano (7-0) still has plans to face off against Brazilian rival Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) even with the collapse of Elite XC, according to a recent interview with Fighters Only magazine.
Here’s a snip:
“I want to make (a fight against Cyborg) happen. My people are in touch with her, so we’re going to make sure we sign together for the same promotion.”
That sounds like a great idea, considering it was a match up that most fans were looking forward to seeing sometime in early 2009. The question now is, which promotion is going to sign these two world class strikers to go toe-to-toe once and for all?
Here’s a look at the possibilities:
- UFC — The promotion has never expressed much interest in putting on female fights. President Dana White has said in the past that there just aren’t enough good female fighters to put together a competitive division. There’s still a slight chance he would sign these two because their fight would be so easy to sell, but it’s a long shot.
- WEC — See above.
- Affliction — By looking at the numbers this company produced with its inaugural event in July, a match like this could certainly help them improve on those for the second event scheduled in January. It would seem like perfect timing, too, since that’s when Elite XC had planned for the fight to go down anyway. The only thing that could prevent Affliction from signing this fight is the broken relationship the company now has with Randy Couture, who happens to be Carano’s head trainer and mentor. She could have some mixed feelings about dealing with the t-shirt company turned mixed martial arts promotion because of the falling out. “There’s a bit of a barrier between me and Affliction,” she recently said. “You know, with Randy and that whole thing. But if they approach me with an offer, who knows?”
- Strikeforce — Perhaps the best fit. The San Jose-based organization has always been willing to include female fights on its cards. Not only that, but Strikeforce is also still trying to build its fan base and grow as an organization. A Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Santos fight would be a great draw for them on a possible future live NBC televised event. Not to mention that NBC seems like a logical landing spot for Gina anyway, given the role she already plays as “Gladiator Crush” on the network’s popular remake of “American Gladiators.” Therefore, Strikeforce seems like the most likely of scenarios.
- Japan (DREAM or WVR) — Probably won’t be as marketable of a fight in Japan as it’s sure to be in the states. It’s not totally impossible, but probably even less likely than the UFC.
- Other smaller promotion — This fight needs to happen on a big stage. Anything else would be a travesty.
Of course, this is all conjecture. The only thing we know for sure is that these two chicks want to fight each other and pretty much the entire MMA community wants to see it.
Let’s hope one of these organizations steps up and delivers.

don’t like this fight at all. the thought of a cute girl (gina), fighting a man(cyborg) doesn’t sit well with me.
point well made, i wanna see gina naked not fighting
i want to see gina naked and fighting.
this fight will happen~
its all a matter of where and when.
my stinky~guess would be on the affliction card in jan’09.
i would definitely count out the wec and japan.
affliction and strikeforce will be the promotion.
Well Affliction is also a long shot stinky! Since Randy does not want to work with Affliction anymore! And Gina training out of Xtreme Couture. Gina is very loyal to the Coutures. I think StrikeForce is where everybody expects this fight to happen?
I think strikeforce too, but don’t really care! It’s not because Gina is cut either. Just really not that interested in 3-3 minute rounds. When the ladies start fighting 3-5 minute rounds, I’ll watch cyborg kill Gina, but it could go the other way too. Even though I’m not really all that interested, It would be a great fight!
I say let them fight in the WEC. The woman dont make that much money anyway, so they fit right in the WEC price range.
I do agree Kevin, that they need to start fighting 5 minute rounds.
In Kim Couture’s Night of Combat promotion, the woman fight 3 five minute rounds.
really?
Cyborg will win. In Chute Boxe news, Werdum is out of the UFC.
The pic looks like some sort of Jazzercise video. 1 and 2 and 3… anyway, WEC should get women and build it up so eventually it will be big enough to make the UFC
Dana White seems pretty smart, but I think he he has his head in his ass on this one. I wish he would sign Gina and Cyborg and let them fight in the WEC. I’m sure ther are plenty of women to have a competive division and have one women’s fight on every WEC card. Gina is a pretty big draw. I wasn’t watching to see Kimbo, that’s for sure.
there are some pretty good pics up of gina all wasted and doing some crazy sht on fightlinker right now if anyone is interested. BOOBIES!
anyone?
Boobies, my friend, boobies!
your both sexist bastards. Should be an entertaining fight!
what about the AFL? They signed viturally every talented female fighter out there except for these 2. i think it would keep that promotion around for a long time being the top femalee mma org. Also b.j. santiago has been talkin cable/pay-per-view blah blah, this would seal those deals. face it, not only will u get female mma fans but theres always gonna dudes wantin to kick back, have a beer and watch hotties fight. AFL is perfect for this fight
I would tear both of them apart… in bed of course ;o
this is a fight i cannot wait to see! should be fantastic.
Is gonna be a Sick fight.. i’d give the edge to cyborg she seem’s alot more agressive in her fights than Gina. Gina should come and train partying in Montreal- i’d be her head coach for that
Cyborg will definitely win, but Gina would give her a gud fight… I wanna’ see this matchup!
I gotta stay loyal and true, GO GINA!!!
And god I hope that Michelle waterson is good enough to start making it big in the world of female MMA!!
UFC should put on this fight. There is an audience for womens MMA so why shouldn’t the biggest organisation in the game be the one who shows it.
there is a big audience~
but there is not a big talent pool.
not enough fighters to start a division..
if zuffa were to take on womens mma ~
it would be the wec.
The WEC is what Ive been saying for a while! If Dana plans to do PPV’s for the WEC. Then they need more drawing power than just Faber and Torres!
i agree jv~
zuffa should capitalize on this oppurtunity asap~
womens mma will grow big~
not as big as mens~ but it will definitely have a market.
with wec dropping the higher weight divisons
this would be a great attraction to their promotion.
And this fight has alot of hype behind it already! It could easily be co-main event to a Faber or Torres fight!
you mean just torres, lol. nah, they have been signing a ton of good little guys. 135 by itself has Maeda, Yahya, Bebe, Tapia, Torres, Tamura, Fabiano, Curran, etc etc..i agree though, unless they somehow win over latinos (they love to watch little dudes fight) then they will need more draw power.
If the UFC signs freakin woman fighters Ill stop buying the PPV’s. What the heck is intersting in this? So dumb!
