Quoteworthy:

“I’m not feeling bad, I’ve already recovered my weight and I’m ready. That guy (Sonnen) will pay dearly my 25% (purse) inside that octagon on those three rounds: 10% on the first, 10% on the second and the rest at the third.”

WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho sounds fired up after having to forfeit 25 percent of his purse to Chael Sonnen after tonight’s fight at WEC 36: “Faber vs. Brown” at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., which will air on the Versus network at 8 p.m. ET. And the Brazilian intends to take it out on the Team Quest fighter in the form of bodily harm. Filho shocked the mixed martial arts community yesterday, coming in to his then 185-pound world title bout an alarming seven pounds over the division limit. As a result, he has been docked a portion of his salary and the fight will now be contested as a three-round nontitle fight.

I hope Sonnen KTFO out of fa**ot ass Filho. Filho talks and talks and talks about respect, respecting the fight, your opponent, the sport….EVERYTHING…..

And first he comes in OUT OF SHAPE and 7 lbs over and wants to blame it on Sonnen somehow??? Sonnen has waited on Filho , because he was crying and taking dope, so he had to pull out of a title match already…and now NOT TITLE match, because, well, probably the same things.

I have no respect for Filho. Watch the Sherdog interview of Filho in past coupel days. It is done in Filho’s bedroom. he looks like he is living in a crackhouse.

I dont get it. When did not making weight equate to loosing all your skills? Filho is still the better fighter, but because he didnt make weight, you all jump off the bandwagon and now expect for him to get knocked out? I could understand if you guys were just hoping for him to get knocked out, but to predict it is just silly in my oppinion. Filho is still the superior fighter and I think it will show. I am not supporting what he did or even what he is saying, but I still believe Chael is going to get his ass kicked.

That arm is going Snap, Crackle, and Pop! THen it will be flown to Brazil and mounted on the wall inside team Nogueira/Anderson’s Gym!

Was never on the bandwagon, I had money on Sonnen when the lines opened. Last fight he got dominated. Chael made a mistake and he locked up an arm bar, was a nice sub in a tough spot, but he was still getting his ass handed to him. I would think this time Sonnen just keeps the fight standing, cause he was putting the beat down on Fihlo with his reach.

Odamn: THen I respect you for it. But you have to admit, there are a lot of people that were picking Filho last week and because he didnt make weight, they are now going with Sonnen. That just makes no sense to me.

Roy: I dont disagree at all. Paulo doesnt sound very classy or professional. THen again, he doesnt speak a word of English so who knows what he really said or how he said it. Bottom line, it was very unprofessional, but he is still the supperior fighter. Chael has never beaten a top opponent in his life. I dont see that changing tonight.

John, why does it not make sense to change your opinion after a weigh in? You just said last week it was an important part when considering bets. Did you not change your mind on Werdum after seeing him last time, I did.

Filho is obviously unfocused and out of shape. He may be able to make up for it with pure talent, but all things being equal, he should take a beating. I don’t really care for either, but I will be rooting for Chael for sure now.

Comment by john
2008-11-05 16:07:41

I change my mind all the time after weigh ins. Its actually a big factor on who I bet on. But I think the talent difference is extreme in this match up. I NEVER thought much of Chael and it might be clouding my judgement.

I just think good takedowns and top notch Jits is something that Chael wont be able to handle.

Being out of shape means more at Heavyweight then at other weight classes. For example Werdum was fat and out of shape because the huge weight range of the HW division allowed him for so much room to get fat. At middleweight you have little Flexibility in weight, so I dont think 7 pounds heavy equals him being out of shape to the point where his skills are diminished. Make sense? You dont have to agree, but am I getting my point accross?

Makes sense, but in this instance, this guy is coming off some “mental issues” or whatever personal problems he was dealing with, he’s had a long lay off, and now to top it off he’s coming in over weight, kinda makes you wonder. I guess we’ll see tonight, but I’m willing to bet, Fihlo isn’t the same guy anymore.

And something else to consider, now he’s got the fact that he’s lost 25% of his purse, the fact that he’s the champ yet he came in overweight and in the back of his mind he’s gotta be thinking about how bad that makes him look. Just more on his mind other than the fight. Paulo may be the better fighter, but like GSP said, it’s not about who’s the better fighter, its about who fights the best come fight night. I think I’m taking my $$ straight to the bank tonight.

I don’t get it? When is being completely unprofessional and not making weight something you hold your opponent accountable for? Yeah….Filho is probably the more talented fighter, but he’s also a complete clown. I dunno. I was a Lutter fan until he came in over weight for the Silva fight. I think that if you come in to a title fight overweight and unable to make it, you should have to forfeit the title. It doesn’t make much difference here because the WEC is dissolving the weight class but still it really blows for Sonnen. He could have potentially come into the UFC as the last Champion and unify the belt with an Anderson fight. Then Silva could be the UFC/PRIDE/WEC unified Middleweight champ. I kinda wouldn’t want Silva to waste one of his last fights on Sonnen but it would be a cool achievement. Anyway all I’m saying is Filho is a punkass

One has to wonder what kind of shape Filho is in. His training had to have taken a hit with everything going on in his personal life. It showed in the fact that he came in extremely overweight. In addition, the last minute weight cutting may really sap his stamina tonight. Filho barely beat Sonnen last time, but he is in a lot more trouble tonight. If this fight goes into the late 2nd or 3rd, Filho will be gassed out.

the champion of a weight class should be held to a higher standard than anyone else because he is the face of that weight class. If you’re the champion of a weight class and come in overweight for a title match. you should lose the title because apparently its not important enough for you to give it its due respect. not making weight as a champion is a slap in the face to the weight class, the organization, the fans, and to mma in general. YOU JUST HELD UP A WHOLE WEIGHT CLASS BECAUSE YOU ARE A LAZY PRICK, WITH NO RESPECT FOR THE SPORT OR YOURSELF.
