“I don’t mind Chris calling me out, it’s part of the game. I certainly didn’t take offense. He had warned me beforehand that he was going to do it, so I don’t consider it disrespectful or anything. I like Chris and think he is a great guy but I don’t know whether he deserves a fight against me. People always say that Chris is the ‘gatekeeper’ to our division, but I think that I am past the gate at the moment. I have spoken to a few people who have told me that they actually think Paul Taylor won that fight against Chris. I beat Paul in one round (in September 2007), so I’m just not sure. But, of course, if that is the fight that the UFC want, then I am more than happy.”
Marcus Davis is eager to return to the Octagon at UFC 93: “Dublin” at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, January 17, 2008. However, “The Irish Hand Grenade” is unclear if Chris Lytle — who decisioned Paul Taylor at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” last weekend and called Davis out afterward — is deserving of the opportunity to fight him at this time. Davis also won at UFC 89 with a slick second round submission over Paul Kelly. I was his twelfth with in 13 fights. Lytle, on the other hand, has won just four of his last eight. However, the losses during that stretch were to Josh Koscheck, Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra — some pretty good competition. If Lytle and Davis were to collide it would certainly be one hell of a fight, which is more than likely the reason “Lights Out” is asking for it. He loves earning that bonus money win or lose.

IMO Lytle vs Davis would make perfect sense right now..Davis needs a little ego check..He should want to fight Lytle anyways..Chris has been going all out these days..He is standing and swinging, willing to go toe to toe with any WW..
Davis is a great boxer, and should be wanting a fight like this..
This would definately be a great fight. Bonus money for sure. Lytle needs to work on that cardio a little though.
slow down their Marcus! He isnt the one to be talking about fighters deserving to actually fight him. He is one fight removed from a pathetic performance against Mike Swick so I dont know who he thinks he is believing that he is above a fight with Lytle.
Cote..Davis.. these dudes.. are sipping on that Syrup.
Phil is a jedi
It’s funny you said that…
Is this Killer Miller??
Jedi Master Phil…
This is Killer Miller.
one and only.
Well I’d like to see this fight. I think Davis is a bad matchup for Lytle. Lights Out is getting KO’ed if this one happens, I’d put good money on it.
Ahhh the battle of the scar faces! This is should be good.
bring Shields in to tap out Davis in his “home” country.
Dude, that is the GREAT idea..
With Pro-elite shutting down, and the UFC maybe scooping up a couple fighters this could actually work….Not to mention that Jake is probably the fighter that would be most possible for the UFC to grab…
And Jake could definitely use a fight like Davis to welcome him to the UFC WW devision…Yeah Marcus I hinted it…a gatekeeper..lol
Agreed. But I think guys coming in from organizations should not get to fight guys who are 12 and 1 in their last 13 fights. Or maybe so but not after a win. These noobs should fight someone coming off a loss that needs to prove themselves and work their way up like everyone else. They’ve put in the time in other orgs so they shouldnt have to start at the bottom. But a decent gatekeeper coming off a loss would be ideal IMO. I’ve been surprised though at how poorly fighters from these other organizations tend to do in the UFC. Perhaps Shields could not stand up to this level of competition.
Did you see Shields last fight? Marcus would KO him in the first round.
LMAO @ Shields.
Obviously Davis has better striking..but “LMAO” at a top 10 WW
Wayne, Jake Shields is 12 and 1 in his last 13 fights as well..LOL what a coinsidence..If Jake gets picked up by the UFC, Davis would be a perfect opponant for him..
Like mike said above, Shields is not the best stand-up fighter…So Davis would be a perfecrt test for Jake, so we can see how he handles himself in the UFC’s deep WW divison..
And yes mike, I did see Jake’s last fight..I have seen pretty much all of his fights..The man has talent and I am a big fan….
I am actually a big fan of his too, but that is because of his Jits skills. He, in my opinion, is barely a top ten WW, if he even cracks it. He does not have any stand up skills, and half his fights go to decision.
I like Shields and he can become a very dangerous WW, but at this point in time Davis would take his head clean off.
Shields would be a better fight as far as rankings go, but Lytle would be more fan pleasing. How about, Lytle vs Davis in Dublin, and bring Jake to fight Karo or some loser WW, just so hes got a win in the UFC. Once they both win, then match them up. Winner will be a fight away from getting into a number one contender fight.
I would prefer to see Jake come in and get Fitch in his first fight. If Dana really wants a GSP/Shields fight, then this probably won’t happen, because I think Fitch would stuff takedowns and keep the fight standing which is bad news for Jake.
Davis/Lytle might be an exciting fight, but it really does nothing for Davis. I think he’s won enough fights to get a push and see what happens against someone higher on the food chain like Alves, Kos, or Diego. He would be the underdog against any of those guys, but he’s consistently won fighs and been exciting with the exception of the Swick fight where he claims to have had a bum shoulder. I give him the benefit of the doubt on that one.
Write this down: Shields would get annihilated by Davis.
No, what if they brought in Paul Daley? They want to expand into the UK and bringing in somebody like Daley to fight Marcus would be a good fight, especially since that event is in Ireland.
Marcus… Wake up dude! You’re a gatekeeper!
Man, I love Davis as a fighter, but dude, drop the attitude take all comers. You have to be game to fight anyone if you’re 1-1 in your last two fights. Lytle is more than a gatekeeper. I’d put him on the same level as Davis.
Man, that fight would be non-stop fireworks!
and he’s like 11-1 in his last 12 fights haha.
who the hell does Marcus think he is? Has he lost his mind? He ius 1 fight removed froma pathetic performance against Swick and now he thinks he is too good to be fighting a guy like lytle. Get a Clue!
This is a fight that the fans want to see, MAN UP and fight instead of pretending like you are above this match up!
He will KO Lytle. Don’t know how you see it John but I think he’s quite the bad matchup for Chris.
Tough fights for Davis are against good wrestlers and BBJ guys – ground fighters. Give him Shields or actually someone like Diego Sanchez who also likes to trade on the feet. If he wins that one he’ll jump way up the ladder, but I don’t see him beating Diego.
Or a rematch with Swick…He was hurt.
#1 Lytle didn’t really call him out, atleast not in a bad way. Said he would like to fight him and that it would be an honor. #2 if I remember correctly, Paul Kelly was winning that fight until Davis pulled that sub. out of his ass. IMO Lytle does deserve to fight Davis and as long as he doesn’t blow his wad early, I think he can beat Davis. Lytle stands and bangs with Davis this will be an exciting fight. I just don’t get where Davis comes up with he’s so much better than Lytle attitude. Davis didn’t do shit against Mike Swick. I’d sure like to know who Davis thinks he deserves next!
True that… This fights makes perfect sense to me and I don’t know what Marcus’s problem is with it. Lytle is a tough SOB and has never been stopped in a fight (only cuts twice) in like 50 pro fights. That in itself should be a challenge for Marcus to try and finish Lytle. And I would really like to know who Marcus wants/thinks he deserves to fight.
Hey, I am not appreciating Davis’ attitude but let’s not say silly things: Kelly was certainly not winning that fight. He was getting tooled on the feet until he tried taking it to the ground and Davis subbed him.
Yeah, you beat Paul Taylor in the first round. But luckily for you, Yves Lavigne was the referee and gave you an assload of time to recover after you got dropped. No doubt it was a good win for you, but you were getting pounded, too.
what the hell is he talking about?!, he just got schooled by mike swick and he dares talking like he is GSP or something,
Lytle is twice the fighter marcus davis is.
I would hardly call that getting “schooled” by swick. It was a shitty match on both ends.
I am a bit upset that he said this, but it is also a little misleading. He is not saying that Lytle doesn’t deserve to fight him because he is so good. He is saying that he should not be fighting a gate keeper, he wants to fight a top tier guy. Something that the UFC has not given him. He should not be satisfied fighting gate keepers. I want to see how he would do against Alves, Kos, Diego ect.
As for this fight, if Lytle stands with Davis like he did with Taylor it would be an early night. I hope this happens I will put my bank account on Davis.
Well in any case, if he really thinks that he’s better than fighting a gatekeeper right now, then he better prove this to us by beating Lytle[who is a gatekeeper as far as rankings are concerned]…Once he gets past the gate legitly, then that’s the time he can say sh!t!
I would love to see this fight. I think Davis would win, but on the other hand, I think Lytle was winning the Alves fight before it got stopped and I don’t think Davis could take out Alves.
Damn, Marcus Davis is getting a big head. I’ve heard him say on radio interviews (Tagg , I thnk) that him and Lytle would be a great stand up war and that the first person who shot for a takedown would be a pussy. I think Davis loses to most of the high level grapplers in the WW division, including GSP, Fitch, Koscheck, Sanchez, Yoshida, Shields, probably Karo too. Lets face it, Paul Kelly is near the bottom of the UFC WW division.
GSP and Fitch shouldn’t even be included in your list of fighters because that’s a given already. I’d say test him against Karo “the ultimate gatekeeper” Parisyan.
The level of competition that Lytle has faced is much HIGHER than Marcus Davis. Granted he may not win them all, but he doesn’t get tapped/KO’d … Hughes, Koscheck, Serra, Alves (cut).
Davis; Swick and a bunch of mediocre UK guys.
I would also suggest that Lytle is better on the ground than Davis.
I think we are all on the same page about Davis getting off his high horse. This would be an extremely exciting fight and that is enough reason to make it. What is really a joke that he pulls out the fact that he beat Taylor in one round as opposed to Lytle’s decision. I seem to remember Davis being about two seconds from having the ref step in and save his a** but pulling an armbar out of it instead while getting knocked silly to steal a win. Hmmmm. I believe that is called selective memory.
Davis would KO lytle within 2 rds. I don’t know much about shields except what I’ve seen in his last 2 fights and to be honest I’m not impressed with him. His standup looks aweful and he looks to have a very good ground game but I question him since it seems his last 2 opponents looked to have zero ground skills.
I agree. Davis would be the first man to (T)KO Lytle.
Anyway, I agree with everyone saying he should get off his high horse, but the guy wants to fight top tier guys, not Lytle. But he should take what he can get on such short notice to fight on the Dublin card.
This would be a very fun fight, but I don’t know if it will last long enough to be fight of the night. Lytle has a great chin but Davis has the best hands at WW.
His hands are hand grenades for f*ck’s sake!!
Man, Davis has turned into a real turd. Considering his poor performance against swick, who has not proved himself to be a top guy at WW, he shouldn’t be talking any shit. He should take this fight and then start talking about top guys if he gets a win. And he should let some of the hot air out of his head. I used to like this guy but he’s too cocky lately…
is this guy kidding. lytle has fought way better competion than davis.
Okay first of all, Lytle lost that fight against Taylor. I know it, you know it, now lets move on. Secondly, I agree with Davis. He doesn’t need to fight Lytle. Davis is now past the point of needing to step thru a gatekeeper. He is one of the most intelligent welterweights in the UFC, and he likes to voice that intelligence.
Finally, Jake Shields vs Marcus Davis is probably the best welterweight match-up I’ve heard someone suggest all year. This is the perfect fighter for Shields, because the UFC wants to prove that he is going to be challenged when he enters the octagon. AND Davis needs to prove that he has what it takes to be in title contention.
SHIELDS VS. DAVIS
and if they are both 12 – 1 (or whatever) in their last 13 fights, that is a great piece of info to market off of.
Attention:
1. Marcus Davis lost a boring decision to Swick because he couldn’t even move his arm. That is a fact. He just fought because he needed the money and didn’t want to let down the fans. If you watch the fight Mike Swick just took him down and never even was able to pass his guard.
2. Marcus did not pull that armbar out of his ass in a fight that he was losing against Taylor. He got caught with one head kick that dropped him, & he was able to recover. If you retards actually watched the fight you would see that the entire two minutes before the arm bar Marcus had mount and was pounding the shit out of Taylor before rolling into an armbar.
3. Lytle throws sloppy looping punches and would get completely picked apart by Davis.
These are the facts.
davis has been a good run without actually beating a fighter anywhere near the top.
WOW,,,MARCUS IS A LITTLE WRONG ON THAT… Marcus is good..Chris is good….Marcus did beat Paul in 1 rd..but he lost the entire rd untill he got the sub. It would be a great fight..
Yeah right Marcus, this dude is obviously worried because of how big a threat Lytle is to Marcus’s run to the top. I would pick Lytle on this one, hands down.
HE definitely is worried that they’re feeding him a gatekeeper. It does really nothing if he wins, only legitimizes his contender status. But if he loses, he’ll go down a lot of rungs down that ladder.
Moral of the story here is that if he really is for real, then he better shut his yap and just fight and grab the W…Period!
I am a fan of Davis but these comments are silly. Lytle is the gatekeeper, he can’t beat the upper echelon of fighters so he bats down any would be assualts by fighters of lesser calibre. I am sorry Marcus but beating Petz-Spratt-Tan-Taylor-Liaudin before losing to swick is immpressive but the best fighter of that group is Swick and you lost to him. Lytle and Davis is a great matchup. Marcus beat Light’s out and you can call out the blue chips. Until then train and fight who they put in front of you. I am sorry for the rant. I like Davis but get off the KoolAid. Wicked disrespectful of Lytle a guy that is game anytime for anyone
Marcus is an awesome fighter who was HURT when he fought Swick. Marcus deserves to fight someone better then Lytle. Come on people.
