UFC action figures aren’t the only collectibles that will soon hit store shelves — trading cards are now in the production pipeline and will be available sometime in 2009.

The mixed martial arts promotion recently announced that it had struck a three-year deal with Topps — the leading creator and marketer of sports and related trading cards and entertainment products — to produce trading cards and stickers that feature “current, future and former UFC athletes.”

Here’s a snip from UFC President Dana White on the agreement:

“We are excited to be working with Topps to showcase our incredible athletes on UFC trading cards. We look forward to having great success with Topps, and to giving UFC fans a product they can collect and trade with other fans of our sport.”

Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, Brock Lesnar, Royce Gracie, Forrest Griffin, Quinton Jackson and many other fighters are expected to be featured in the initial series.

In addition to these top athletes from the promotion, Topps will also include the most memorable moments inside the Octagon, from UFC 1 all the way up to UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” on November 15.

It is, after all, going to be the “biggest fight in UFC history.”

At least he didn’t say this was a “huge announcement”. These would have been cool for me if I was still in 7th grade. But I dunno. Maybe they will be cool.

Judging by the spelling, punctuation, grammar and overall poor quality of many posts on here, I would say there are tons of 8-year-olds who would be interested in this.

I’ll trade you a Tank Abbott scratch and sniff card for a Royce Gracie gi patch card. And I’ll even throw in a kick to the nuts and a Muay Thai clinch and knee to the head. Deal?

I am hanging on to my Starns card for ever after I get it signed. Then I am going to frame it next to my Quarry card doing the Screech move! Can’t wait!!

To be honest i don’t think that the Lesnar vs couture fight will be hte best fight in UFC history- simply cuz the card it self sucks balls, only good fight is the main event… and really i don’t care to see a man in his 3rd professional MMA fight gets a title shot before others who have dedicated their life and keep winning get shafted (i.e. Fabricio Verdum) .. biggest UFC fight would be Fedor vs Couture, .. and up till now i’d have to say Liddel vs Silva… anyone agree???

i agree. i think that everyone would much rather see couture vs fedor. im also starting to think that this fights gonna be one of those overly promoted fights thats over in 1 minute or less. its either gonna be brock by tko/ko gnp, or randy by submission. im thinkin either way its over quick. and your right, the rest of the card isnt that great. but hey, what do i know…this fight could be great or go the distance. who knows…..

agreed big time…I think its UFC 93 with Rampage/Wandy, Nog/Mir AND Forrest/Rashad that SHOULD be HUGE…

that is definatly a stacked up card! what more could you ask for in 1 night??? my predictions: rampage, nogiera, griffin. i know rampage is having tough times right now but i think he’s gonna pull this one off. if he doesnt, he might as well throw in the towel. PERMINANTLY!!! he should be able to find a way to win this time.

maybee. i know baseball cards are only worth money if they are mostly from the 60’s and are in gm 10 conditon and are rare and are in demand and are rookie cards. they massed produced too many cards during the 80’s and 90’s. my dad has alot of graded gem mint 10 rookie cards of some great players and about 5 thousand other cards that are’nt worth squat b/c they were “mass produced”. maybee if someone buys them now, they might be worth something to their kids.

They probably mean that they will keep producing cards as newcomers are introduced in the UFC.

I wonder if they’ll have the fighters’ records on the back and reissue them each year with new pictures so you could have a fighter’s ‘rookie card’ or ‘belt card.’

At first I thought this was a terrible idea. But the more I think about it, the more I realize its just like every other sports association. Collecting hockey cards was huge when I was a kid (around 11-12). I obviously don’t collect cards now but I’m sure some twenty-somethings still do.

If they are done in a way that’s somewhat classy (and not over the top cheesy) I don’t think it will ruin the sports image.

Remember, this is the manliest sport ever, so any attempt to make it cute and appealing for mainstream audiences is pretty lame.

I used to be hardcore into baseballcards in high school. I think I’ll at least get the premier edition boxes of these cards. Hopefully Upper Deck will make some premium cards too.

I’d really like to get my hands on a Fred Ettish UFC 2 trading card with an action shot of Johnny Rhodes kicking at the Legendary Grandmaster of the Minnesota Fetale Tudo Federation of Fetal Fighters (MFTFFF). Something about seeing a guy curl into a fetal position when in a fight makes me laugh.

BROCK LESNAR is in the initial release??? WHY??? What has he done? He’s 1-1 in the UFC. God, I hope Couture ruptures Lesnar’s spleen.
