Quoteworthy:

“This was the high point in my career … When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre gushes about his recent promotion to Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Bruno Fernandes from the Gracie Barra camp. Fernandes is a decorated practitioner who now resides in Canada along with “Rush.” The honor could perhaps not have come at a better time — St. Pierre is set to rematch BJ Penn at UFC 94 on January 31 … and his jiu-jitsu is kind slick, too. Just a little bit.

I remember hearing about him getting his brown belt a while back. He was still a purple belt back around the time that he fought Hughes the first time. He’s evolved as a fighter alot since that time, and I’m sure that he’s now a legit black belt. Keep in mind though, there are levels to it. Just because you have a black belt in BJJ, doesn’t put you on the level with a guy like BJ Penn. Very few people in the world have as good BJJ as him. Where GSP lacks in pure BJJ, he makes up for in wrestling, strength, size, and athleticism. Its goiung to be a helluva fight. I am going to predict another razor-thin split decision, going wither way. I just hope it goes in BJ’s favor this time.

No way in hell does BJ win. GSP is CONSTANTLY improving and the GSP we see in January will be a step up from the last time. BJ would get owned by the one that beat Fitch. BJ trains for his fights, GSP trains YEAR ROUND and it will show when they meet. That’s why GSP can attain a black belt so quick. 1 year of GSP’s training is like 4 years of the average fighter. He dedicates his life to be the best.

And come on, BJ was a mundials BJJ black belt champion at the age of 21 and has been a master black belt for over a decade. 90% of this BJJ resume was created between bong rips and trips to Taco Bell. Now he has benn taking things seriously for almost 2 years now and is undefeated since taking things seriously, is a champion for a second time in a different weight class since taking things seriously and has beaten 3 guys that combine for over 90 wins and less than 20 losses. George beats up little guys with ease (Sherk, Serra, Hughes) but never seems to finish anyone over 5′10 (Kos, Fitch, BJ) always a decision. Whats funny is that of those 3 guys, BJ is by far the smallest from any angle but he still gave George the tuffest fight of the 3 and he was out of shape LoL, if that same BJ comes in (which he will and already is, go to BJPENN.COM to see for yourself) but is in half the shape fitch or Kos stay in he should be walking out with two belts while George heads to the hospital, almost like last time, but you can see where the difference is = )

BJ is amazing on the ground, but the only way I see him submitting GSP is if he gets his back. If GSP can keep top position and keep from getting reversed I don’t see BJ catching a submission from the bottom. And while BJ does have an amazing guard, I think GSP can wear him down, do some effective GnP, and get a later round TKO or decision

I mean the guy is a world class wrestler, striker and now a BJJ black belt. He’s a stud and he’s young and only getting better in this sport. He’s gonna dominate for a long time, folks.

Its about time, I can’t believe how well he did with black belts in the past, meaning they couldn’t do anything to him, he avoided submissions very well. Georges has more room for improvement than penn in my opinion and this should be a very interesting fight, I still believe if it was a 5 rounder there first time there would have been no split decision and I believe this time georges takes this one much more decisively. Just look at hughes/gsp 1 then 2 and 3 they were all very different, serra 1 and serra 2, same he improved the second time and almost looked like a different fighter, doing poorly makes him hungrier. He never looked so bad as he did against serra then comes back with a vengence and dominated 4 tough guys in a row, one took penn to a close decision (serra)and the other beat penn (hughes). Kosheck and fitch are no joke and the only guys to beat an undefeated sanchez, Penn hasn’t been tested with such stiff competition as st.pierre has. Gsp will beat penn again this time and send him back to the light weight division were he belongs.

Worst arguement ever, going back as far as the Serra/Penn fight is like going back to the Hughes that beat GSP. Cant have it both ways nathan/gord. All this GSP has improved crap, is a load of crap, sure he has improved, everybody has, but this idea that he has improved so much more than anybody else is rediculous.

Let his RESUME do the talking, we’ll break it down in 2 era’s, before Penn and after. Before, GSP was knocking out Jay Heiron, dominating excellent wrestler Frank Trigg, and stuffing everything Hughes threw at him, but was just shy on the offensive, then outwrestled Sherk like nothing, and oh yeah, had already beat Karo Parisyan relativly easily.
Then Penn
After that, only a total of 4 different opponents, Kos, a wrestler whom GSP beat but by no means dominated, serra, hughes, and fitch. Both before and after, GSP was awesome, but is the after Penn status and opponents, really that much better then the before? And Penn HANDLED that. I got my money on Penn.

Comment by Gord
2008-10-15 22:24:46

Hughes handled GSP then and now he got UTTERLY owned. Fitch is higher competition than Karo or Miller and it was more lopsided. All one has to do is watch his recent fights and then go back and watch his old fights (big difference). I guess you don’t count BJJ improvement blue belt then, BLACK belt NOW, (someone who’s giving belt away, thinks he has improved). His wrestling was always good, but he just mauls guys with it now. His striking power has really improved (see Fitches face). Don’t expect me to believe he could do that much damage back then, because he NEVER did. Lastly, anyone who knows him or trains with him, say he has gotten much stronger. Then he could barely do 10 bodyweight pull ups, now he can do 3-4 with 100 lb dumbell strapped to his waist. He has improved in everything and if you can’t see what Greg Jackson has done with him, you need to get your eyes checked.

Gsp destoyed sherk in 2 rounds years ago, penn took 3, good luck with your prediction boardrider. He never came close to knocking out/submitting gsp the first time why would he be so dominate now, if anything it will be the other way around.

Comment by GregC

I don’t think their fights against Sherk really matter much, but I can’t imagine BJ dominating GSP. He has consistently gotten better when facing a fighter for the second time around. Plus, with Greg Jackson in his corner you know he is going to have an excellent game plan for the fight. I like GSP to get either a 4th or 5th round TKO or win a unanimous decision. I think he can wear down BJ and get more dominant as the fight wears on.

No way this fight goes to a decision. Even if BJ comes in with great cardio, his gas tank will drain fast trying to match strength with GSP. The only reason Fitch lasted 5 rounds is because he is close to GSP’s size and strength, plus he has one of the best chins in MMA. If you don’t believe me, try wrestling with a muscular guy 20 lbs heavier and see how fast you tire out. He’s coasting ,while you have to go balls to the wall.

All we have to do is look at hughes v GSP 1,then look at GSP V Hughes2 and 3 ,He came in like a whole different person ,he is constantly improving his game .He beat Penn the first time ,this time I see him beating Penn in the second round due to referee stoppage ,I am just going with GSP record, and nothing in it tells me that he is not going to be much improved since his last fight with Penn,so I just can not see Penn pulling a submission out (which is his only chance)I know Penn hits hard ,but he is not going to hit GSP any harder than he did in the first fight ,and he couldn’t knock him out then ,so how is Penn suppose to beat him ,I do not expect this fight to be nearly as good as the first one ,GSP is just to good for Penn,Penn you just need to stay in 155 and clean out that division ,before you even thought about moving back up

Comment by dave
2008-10-14 01:12:19

It’s fun to project, but if everyone was being really honest there are lots of possibilities. If Penn gets in a really good shot and shakes BJ, Penn is SO good at going in for the kill and finishing. The other part about Penn is that he just never gets hurt. GSP is a great striker, and he definitely can do damage to Penn, but he’s going to have to hit him A LOT! There’s no way this ends in the 2nd. Deep into the 3rd will be the earliest I see this ending. Both will defend the submission well enough they’ll have to be really tired before they get submitted.

But it’s easier for me to imagine GSP’s strategy panning out over BJ’s. His reach is better so he should be able to keep out of BJ’s stand-up, his take downs are second to none, so I definitely see GSP being able to get BJ down and tire him out before finishing or getting a decision. Of course a BJ submission can happen anytime, or a BJ combo could happen at anytime, my money’s on GSP. I have yet to see BJ have an answer for someone that wrestles like GSP.

Sorry, that would be BJ…better jiu-jitsu, better striking, and P4P better wrestling and takedown defense. Why do you think BJ finishes EVERYONE at 155 (and makes it look easy) but GSP went to decision against Kos and Fitch?

Comment by Gord
2008-10-15 23:12:15

Simple, Kos and Fitch are on another freekin planet, than a washed up Pulver, Stevenson or even Sean (I think I can stand with BJ) Sherk. There is more to “complete fighter” than just BJJ, striking and Wrestling. Stength and conditioning and athleticism are a HUGE asset when you have the skills to go with them. Saying BJ has better wrestling (in any way , shape or form) is a joke. GSP’s wider array of strikes (kicks, knees, punches)makes him the better striker. BJ mostly just uses his hands. As far as EFFECTIVE BJJ (getting a sub win in the cage) they both have 5 sub victories. BJ’s are ALL chokes, GSP has hit armbars, chokes and a kimura.

Only way penn wins is by pulling a serra which is very unlikely, gsp wins this fight anyway he wants it, and I would laugh my arse off if he was the one who rocked and submitted penn. Anyone who’s been following mma for any good length of time now knows penn is the underdog here and gsp should be something like -200 to -300 or the favorite.

But Adam, they talked about this on a round table on Sherdog radio and they all agreed GSP comes in as a favourite.

That’s like 5-6 ‘experts’ in agreement.

It’s not going to be like -500 or anything it will probably be -120 or -150 for GSP.

They’ve both improved since the first fight but,
GSP won the first, that’s going to help him in the spread, plus he’s bigger and BJ has dropped his last two WW fights. These are all variables when deciding the line.

I think this fight is going to be HUGE, but if you look at the facts, GSP is the favorite for sure. Better wrestling, striking and cardio, and fighting at his natural weight. BJ is a dangerous fighter, but he looks like a shorter, browner Tank Abbott when fighting at WW. Anything can happen, but I’m calling another Rush victory right now..

GSP now trains with Greg Jackson, and holds the WW title, and BJ holds the LW title and dominates the division. Both guys have stellar stand up, but I think Georges is better. Regardless, cardio will be the deciding factor in this match..

Ever since GSP has trained with Jackson, he barely syands up anymore. He did a little against Fitch, but Fitch is not that great standing up. We’ll see who has better striking and fewer bruises when the smoke clears.

Gsp IS a different fighter now, he’s only improving and either jackson is a liar or he’s telling the truth that gsp improves all the time which is scary for his opponents. I feel very confident gsp wins this one and wouldn’t be surprised at all if he finishes penn and penn is the bloody one this time around. :P

Penn will bleed this fight, for sure. GSP has really improved his striking power,as seen in the Fitch fight. You could hear the SMACK when he dropped Fitch.

Exactly, haven’t you noticed that the OPPOSITE happens when GSP fights a guy for the 2nd time. Hughes 1 gets armbarred, Hughes 2 armbars Hughes. Serra 1 gets TKOed, Serra 2 TKO’s Serra. BJ 1 he bleeds, BJ 2 he makes BJ bleed, lol.

Did you miss the “LOL” at the end of it. It wasn’t meant to be a serious argument. It does have some truth to it though.

I didn’t think GSP could get any better! Top notch in every MMA discipline. Don’t see any weeknesses. His gotta stay away from the chicks though. What did Mickey say in the movie Rocky?…”Women weaken legs”.

first off i think G.S.P is definitely going to beat BJ Penn most likely a UD but maybe a stoppage by strikes in one of the later rounds and also it is insane to think how good GSP is going to be in a couple years…he has two black belts…he’s a two time UFC champion and he’s only 27 years old. Depending on the way he beats BJ he may be considered the number 1 pound for pound in the world even passing Anderson Silva. BJ is widely considered top 3 and a win over a top guy like that may mean the number 1 spot for GSP…just a thought. I am Canadian and i love GSP so i would like to see this happen…compounded with a knockout of Anderson Silva by Patrick Cote it would definitely mean GSP would be number in the world and that would mean 2 French Canadians would hold UFC titles and that would awesome!!!!!

What do you mean “so what”? That’s a huge accomplishment man.. Machida is also one of the best in the world.

Machida is untested. We’ll see when he fights someone who’s any good. Two black belts doesn’t get you that far. Its a big accomplishment but It doesn’t make a world champion.
