“This was the high point in my career … When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”
UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre gushes about his recent promotion to Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Bruno Fernandes from the Gracie Barra camp. Fernandes is a decorated practitioner who now resides in Canada along with “Rush.” The honor could perhaps not have come at a better time — St. Pierre is set to rematch BJ Penn at UFC 94 on January 31 … and his jiu-jitsu is kind slick, too. Just a little bit.

WTF? HE JUST GOT HIS BROWN BELT. WHAT A JOKE,. HE DOESNT DESERVE A BLACK BELT.
Anyone know how long he has been training jiu-jitsu?
Couple of years?
I knew he was training, but I didn’t think he was near a black belt.
why dont u just give him a congrats like the rest.
instead of questioning
how long the man has been practicing bjj.
fernandes is the real deal
and does not just give black~belts away to anyone.
trust me~ if anyone gets a black~belt from fernandes?
they earned it.
I remember hearing about him getting his brown belt a while back. He was still a purple belt back around the time that he fought Hughes the first time. He’s evolved as a fighter alot since that time, and I’m sure that he’s now a legit black belt. Keep in mind though, there are levels to it. Just because you have a black belt in BJJ, doesn’t put you on the level with a guy like BJ Penn. Very few people in the world have as good BJJ as him. Where GSP lacks in pure BJJ, he makes up for in wrestling, strength, size, and athleticism. Its goiung to be a helluva fight. I am going to predict another razor-thin split decision, going wither way. I just hope it goes in BJ’s favor this time.
great wrestler, striker and now a black belt in bjj. wow, thats impressive. still think bj is gonna somehow win in their rematch. war bj!!!
No way in hell does BJ win. GSP is CONSTANTLY improving and the GSP we see in January will be a step up from the last time. BJ would get owned by the one that beat Fitch. BJ trains for his fights, GSP trains YEAR ROUND and it will show when they meet. That’s why GSP can attain a black belt so quick. 1 year of GSP’s training is like 4 years of the average fighter. He dedicates his life to be the best.
You can watch BJ win live on Jan 31 bro, as long as you got eyes big G, then you shouldnt be able to avoid seeing it come Jan 31st. No more talk, no more BSing huh Gord. Tell Georges thanks for keeping BJ’s belt warm for BJ through the winter. BJ BJ BJ!!!
oh geez this guy? everyone who knows anything knows that GSP is winning this fight… but cool bet on fat a@@ penn and make my odds better
And come on, BJ was a mundials BJJ black belt champion at the age of 21 and has been a master black belt for over a decade. 90% of this BJJ resume was created between bong rips and trips to Taco Bell. Now he has benn taking things seriously for almost 2 years now and is undefeated since taking things seriously, is a champion for a second time in a different weight class since taking things seriously and has beaten 3 guys that combine for over 90 wins and less than 20 losses. George beats up little guys with ease (Sherk, Serra, Hughes) but never seems to finish anyone over 5′10 (Kos, Fitch, BJ) always a decision. Whats funny is that of those 3 guys, BJ is by far the smallest from any angle but he still gave George the tuffest fight of the 3 and he was out of shape LoL, if that same BJ comes in (which he will and already is, go to BJPENN.COM to see for yourself) but is in half the shape fitch or Kos stay in he should be walking out with two belts while George heads to the hospital, almost like last time, but you can see where the difference is = )
ok, ill do that. and yea, hes a huge fatty man, hella fat, its not even an interesting fight huh . . . Loser.
You can’t put anything past BJ (the lil prick).
Dude’s undeniably talented, but GSP is coming in as a favourite in this fight.
It’s been awhile since BJ has had a fight where he hasn’t been the favourite to win.
i hope bj wins. i like them both but i would rather see bj take the win. this fight could definatly go either way but i agree bj’s gonna find someway to pull off a submission or somethin. well, who knows if he can now that gsp has his black belt! but i still think bjs more slippery on the ground than anyone in the ufc or possibly the world!!!
BJ is amazing on the ground, but the only way I see him submitting GSP is if he gets his back. If GSP can keep top position and keep from getting reversed I don’t see BJ catching a submission from the bottom. And while BJ does have an amazing guard, I think GSP can wear him down, do some effective GnP, and get a later round TKO or decision
I was just gonna say that. Who else can you say in this sport is that well-rounded in all 3 major disciplines of the sport? Even Anderson Silva has that weakness in wrestling which he is able to avoid because he’s so good in the clinch and just overall elusive.
I mean the guy is a world class wrestler, striker and now a BJJ black belt. He’s a stud and he’s young and only getting better in this sport. He’s gonna dominate for a long time, folks.
congrats Gsp!
congratulations superman of mma.
Superman now has another weapon added to his dangerous arsenal. Only GSP could beat GSP…
i see the name gracie attached to it, so i know it’s the real deal. just another facet to his already outstanding all-around fighting abilities. the scary thing about gsp at the age of 27, is that he is only going to get better.
Congrats GSP. That is as good as it gets. I think Penn is a punk,(He is a great fighter.) But I will pull for GSP in this one.
Congrats GSP!!! You have earned a BJJ black belt!! Woah.. plus GB72 representing! I had the privlege of training on the same mat with GSP (Renzo Gracie Academy NYC), when he was preping(Hughes2) to win the UFC WW title..He is without a doubt a nice guy. ” Off the Mat “.. on the mat.. we all know.. a bad bad man.. I really respect him as a person.. now for his super fight / rematch with BJ Penn.. Good Luck.. I really hope it lives up to all our expectations..and is a fight of the year canidate.
Its about time, I can’t believe how well he did with black belts in the past, meaning they couldn’t do anything to him, he avoided submissions very well. Georges has more room for improvement than penn in my opinion and this should be a very interesting fight, I still believe if it was a 5 rounder there first time there would have been no split decision and I believe this time georges takes this one much more decisively. Just look at hughes/gsp 1 then 2 and 3 they were all very different, serra 1 and serra 2, same he improved the second time and almost looked like a different fighter, doing poorly makes him hungrier. He never looked so bad as he did against serra then comes back with a vengence and dominated 4 tough guys in a row, one took penn to a close decision (serra)and the other beat penn (hughes). Kosheck and fitch are no joke and the only guys to beat an undefeated sanchez, Penn hasn’t been tested with such stiff competition as st.pierre has. Gsp will beat penn again this time and send him back to the light weight division were he belongs.
I couldn’t agree more,Nathan. Good to see you back. I really enjoy reading your well thought out posts.
You guys should go make out gord . . .
You should talk about your same gender fantasies in a more apropriate forum. Lets stick to MMA in this one.
Well played = ) Cant wait huh!!!
Worst arguement ever, going back as far as the Serra/Penn fight is like going back to the Hughes that beat GSP. Cant have it both ways nathan/gord. All this GSP has improved crap, is a load of crap, sure he has improved, everybody has, but this idea that he has improved so much more than anybody else is rediculous.
Let his RESUME do the talking, we’ll break it down in 2 era’s, before Penn and after. Before, GSP was knocking out Jay Heiron, dominating excellent wrestler Frank Trigg, and stuffing everything Hughes threw at him, but was just shy on the offensive, then outwrestled Sherk like nothing, and oh yeah, had already beat Karo Parisyan relativly easily.
Then Penn
After that, only a total of 4 different opponents, Kos, a wrestler whom GSP beat but by no means dominated, serra, hughes, and fitch. Both before and after, GSP was awesome, but is the after Penn status and opponents, really that much better then the before? And Penn HANDLED that. I got my money on Penn.
Hughes handled GSP then and now he got UTTERLY owned. Fitch is higher competition than Karo or Miller and it was more lopsided. All one has to do is watch his recent fights and then go back and watch his old fights (big difference). I guess you don’t count BJJ improvement blue belt then, BLACK belt NOW, (someone who’s giving belt away, thinks he has improved). His wrestling was always good, but he just mauls guys with it now. His striking power has really improved (see Fitches face). Don’t expect me to believe he could do that much damage back then, because he NEVER did. Lastly, anyone who knows him or trains with him, say he has gotten much stronger. Then he could barely do 10 bodyweight pull ups, now he can do 3-4 with 100 lb dumbell strapped to his waist. He has improved in everything and if you can’t see what Greg Jackson has done with him, you need to get your eyes checked.
no matter what…hands DOWN, BJ PENN still knocks/submits GSP any/every way possible.
prediction for January 2009: PENN submits GSP by RNC 1st round.
Gsp destoyed sherk in 2 rounds years ago, penn took 3, good luck with your prediction boardrider. He never came close to knocking out/submitting gsp the first time why would he be so dominate now, if anything it will be the other way around.
I don’t think their fights against Sherk really matter much, but I can’t imagine BJ dominating GSP. He has consistently gotten better when facing a fighter for the second time around. Plus, with Greg Jackson in his corner you know he is going to have an excellent game plan for the fight. I like GSP to get either a 4th or 5th round TKO or win a unanimous decision. I think he can wear down BJ and get more dominant as the fight wears on.
bj penn is gonna get all fat and lazy, prediction bj gassing out late 2nd round and getting steamrolled by gsp.
Maybe, but I think the most likely outcome is a 5 round UD for GSP.
No way this fight goes to a decision. Even if BJ comes in with great cardio, his gas tank will drain fast trying to match strength with GSP. The only reason Fitch lasted 5 rounds is because he is close to GSP’s size and strength, plus he has one of the best chins in MMA. If you don’t believe me, try wrestling with a muscular guy 20 lbs heavier and see how fast you tire out. He’s coasting ,while you have to go balls to the wall.
All we have to do is look at hughes v GSP 1,then look at GSP V Hughes2 and 3 ,He came in like a whole different person ,he is constantly improving his game .He beat Penn the first time ,this time I see him beating Penn in the second round due to referee stoppage ,I am just going with GSP record, and nothing in it tells me that he is not going to be much improved since his last fight with Penn,so I just can not see Penn pulling a submission out (which is his only chance)I know Penn hits hard ,but he is not going to hit GSP any harder than he did in the first fight ,and he couldn’t knock him out then ,so how is Penn suppose to beat him ,I do not expect this fight to be nearly as good as the first one ,GSP is just to good for Penn,Penn you just need to stay in 155 and clean out that division ,before you even thought about moving back up
It’s fun to project, but if everyone was being really honest there are lots of possibilities. If Penn gets in a really good shot and shakes BJ, Penn is SO good at going in for the kill and finishing. The other part about Penn is that he just never gets hurt. GSP is a great striker, and he definitely can do damage to Penn, but he’s going to have to hit him A LOT! There’s no way this ends in the 2nd. Deep into the 3rd will be the earliest I see this ending. Both will defend the submission well enough they’ll have to be really tired before they get submitted.
But it’s easier for me to imagine GSP’s strategy panning out over BJ’s. His reach is better so he should be able to keep out of BJ’s stand-up, his take downs are second to none, so I definitely see GSP being able to get BJ down and tire him out before finishing or getting a decision. Of course a BJ submission can happen anytime, or a BJ combo could happen at anytime, my money’s on GSP. I have yet to see BJ have an answer for someone that wrestles like GSP.
The all around most complete fighter in the game today !
Sorry, that would be BJ…better jiu-jitsu, better striking, and P4P better wrestling and takedown defense. Why do you think BJ finishes EVERYONE at 155 (and makes it look easy) but GSP went to decision against Kos and Fitch?
Simple, Kos and Fitch are on another freekin planet, than a washed up Pulver, Stevenson or even Sean (I think I can stand with BJ) Sherk. There is more to “complete fighter” than just BJJ, striking and Wrestling. Stength and conditioning and athleticism are a HUGE asset when you have the skills to go with them. Saying BJ has better wrestling (in any way , shape or form) is a joke. GSP’s wider array of strikes (kicks, knees, punches)makes him the better striker. BJ mostly just uses his hands. As far as EFFECTIVE BJJ (getting a sub win in the cage) they both have 5 sub victories. BJ’s are ALL chokes, GSP has hit armbars, chokes and a kimura.
WOOHOO! Now go pwn Anderson Silva sometime in the future and you will officially be in the record books.
OK come on guys lets be real here. Sure GSP is hands down the best ww. But Anderson Silva would beat anyone in MMA from 185 down. You can’t expect GSP to really step into the cage with Anderson Silva when there is so much new blood at WW to tear him up. Plus just so you sorry sacks of unused semen know, BJ is going to beat GSP and lick his blood. Cuz BJ is crazy and he is a badass
wow, that is great! bj penn still wins this fight easily though! he rocks GSP to the ground and submits him with rear naked choke in round 2. GSP is a good fighter and he will be back, he will just have to get a few wins under his belt before he can challenge BJ for the title again.
Not likely bro! Did you not watch St. Pierre vs. Fitch??? Fitch couldnt even touch GSP. The same with Penn, he wont even get close enough to get Pierre to the ground!
That’s a pretty bold prediction.. BJ winning is a long shot, but winning with ease? I just can’t see it. GSP will out strike and out wrestle BJ, and will avoid any submission attempts. Seeing how its a 5 rounder Pudgy Penn is in for a long night..
Did you watch the first fight, BJ won the first round with ease and then GSP woke up and beat him. If you think BJ has gotten better then you my friend are a fool. GSP has regrouped and now a BJJ black belt, come on he will be ready to rock and roll and put BJ in his place “the lightweight division”.
Actually, I’m pretty sure anyone will tell you now that BJ has rededicated himself to fighting, he is MUCH better than when they fought the first time. You are the fool. No one will get dominated, this will be a classic!! Oh and go BJ (I am a fan of both though).
Gee great, so he’s even better now. The UFC may have to change its rules and make him fight two or three guys at a time just to make it competitive.
You must of missed their first fight, an out of shape BJ was all up in GSP’s face. BJ’s boxing is on another level than GSP’s, his hand speed is just insane now. Although GSP is one of the best wrestlers in mma, so it will be fun to watch.
Yea, but that was also before Pierre got his ass kicked by Serra. If you look at the GSP after that fight, he’s pretty much got this fight made. Watch BJ try to submit him by the time the fight rolls around..
Parks1 what are you going by with this penns hand speed, did you watch his fight with sherk, it took him three rounds with mr. stubby arms. I highly doubt the eye jab and nose break happens again and gsp will dominate penn both one the ground and on the feet, gsp will be ready for this one and will be looking to make a statement with penn.
Oh is GSP gonna lay and pray on BJ again for a round without doing any damage. He used his jab against sherk, because it was working, and that is good boxing my friend. No I’m saying his hand speed has pick up, because that’s what Joe daddy said after their fight. Whatever happens, this fight will be a good one.
I can’t believe Penn fans diss GSP for lay and pray on BJ. GSP doesn’t lay and pray on anyone. Instead of dissing GSP, give BJ credit for being one of the few who can defend GSP’s GnP.
Lame, stand and trade, oh, he couldnt se cause of the eye poke . . . He’ll have two fresh ones to start this fight with so stand and trade, like in the first round of the last fight, or go to the ground with a fresh BJ, are you kidding me. And didnt GSP just get his Purple belt before the Serra fight??? I like how when he is fighting a BJJ guy he announces his new belt advancements like a tool!
Allz I can say to that is that Penn’s boxing against Sherk was more effective then GSP’s was.
I honestly think alves and sanchez would give penn a run for his money, fitch beat both these guys and we all know what gsp did to fitch, you must be on something if you think penn owns gsp in this fight. Only way penn wins is by pulling a serra which is very unlikely, gsp wins this fight anyway he wants it, and I would laugh my arse off if he was the one who rocked and submitted penn. Anyone who’s been following mma for any good length of time now knows penn is the underdog here and gsp should be something like -200 to -300 or the favorite.
you know your a badass when you have 2 black belts and your only 26-27 years old
Yeah , and if they gave out belts in wrestling, he would be a black belt in that too(a long time ago). He’s the complete package as a fighter and only getting better.
BJ doesn’t have to pull a serra to win, he almost won last time
Dream on bro, those odds are crazy. I am a big GSP fan, but he’s in for the hardest fight of his life.
You watch, GSP will be at least -200. You have to remember, the experts that make these odds aren’t on BJ’s sack.
You’re rediculous bro, as i read and go down further you just say/make up the most garb BS ive ever heard LoL! Look at those odds LoL, GET REAL GORD! At least be realistic dude, Thats how you know its all hopes and a fantasy for you, everything you say is made up or false, like your predictions in every Penn fight ive had the pleasure of arguing with you about, 0-3 dude . . .
I’ll admit I dislike BJ and love GSP, and this fight could go either way.
But Adam, they talked about this on a round table on Sherdog radio and they all agreed GSP comes in as a favourite.
That’s like 5-6 ‘experts’ in agreement.
It’s not going to be like -500 or anything it will probably be -120 or -150 for GSP.
They’ve both improved since the first fight but,
GSP won the first, that’s going to help him in the spread, plus he’s bigger and BJ has dropped his last two WW fights. These are all variables when deciding the line.
BURN!!! lol
LoL!!!
Who has penn beat lately thats noteworthy?, light weights and it took him 3 rounds to beat sherk. I would bet big money that those will be the odds for this fight, especially after such a dominating performance against fitch who I think would dominate penn.
GSP is such a class act. Compare him to Elite XC, the Shamrock’s, Tito etc. Wait… There is no comparison.
How is Fitch going to dominate Penn, on the ground, on his feet. I would put money on Penn in that one.
I think this fight is going to be HUGE, but if you look at the facts, GSP is the favorite for sure. Better wrestling, striking and cardio, and fighting at his natural weight. BJ is a dangerous fighter, but he looks like a shorter, browner Tank Abbott when fighting at WW. Anything can happen, but I’m calling another Rush victory right now..
GSP’s striking is simply not better than BJ’s. All you need to do is look at GSP’s face vs. BJ’s face after the first fight.
Man, everyone has to put a little less emphasis on the first fight.. Since then, both guys have improved substantially. GSP now trains with Greg Jackson, and holds the WW title, and BJ holds the LW title and dominates the division. Both guys have stellar stand up, but I think Georges is better. Regardless, cardio will be the deciding factor in this match..
Ever since GSP has trained with Jackson, he barely syands up anymore. He did a little against Fitch, but Fitch is not that great standing up. We’ll see who has better striking and fewer bruises when the smoke clears.
dang.What took so long
Dang, These have got to be my two favorite fighters.
Going to be hard to watch !
Dang. I feel sorry for Bj Penn.
Gsp IS a different fighter now, he’s only improving and either jackson is a liar or he’s telling the truth that gsp improves all the time which is scary for his opponents. I feel very confident gsp wins this one and wouldn’t be surprised at all if he finishes penn and penn is the bloody one this time around.
Penn will bleed this fight, for sure. GSP has really improved his striking power,as seen in the Fitch fight. You could hear the SMACK when he dropped Fitch.
GSP was the bloody one last time… this time wont be too much different, except BJ will win
Exactly, haven’t you noticed that the OPPOSITE happens when GSP fights a guy for the 2nd time. Hughes 1 gets armbarred, Hughes 2 armbars Hughes. Serra 1 gets TKOed, Serra 2 TKO’s Serra. BJ 1 he bleeds, BJ 2 he makes BJ bleed, lol.
Hughes 3 not 2.
That is the worst, most irrelevant arguement ive ever heard.
Did you miss the “LOL” at the end of it. It wasn’t meant to be a serious argument. It does have some truth to it though.
I didn’t think GSP could get any better! Top notch in every MMA discipline. Don’t see any weeknesses. His gotta stay away from the chicks though. What did Mickey say in the movie Rocky?…”Women weaken legs”.
first off i think G.S.P is definitely going to beat BJ Penn most likely a UD but maybe a stoppage by strikes in one of the later rounds and also it is insane to think how good GSP is going to be in a couple years…he has two black belts…he’s a two time UFC champion and he’s only 27 years old. Depending on the way he beats BJ he may be considered the number 1 pound for pound in the world even passing Anderson Silva. BJ is widely considered top 3 and a win over a top guy like that may mean the number 1 spot for GSP…just a thought. I am Canadian and i love GSP so i would like to see this happen…compounded with a knockout of Anderson Silva by Patrick Cote it would definitely mean GSP would be number in the world and that would mean 2 French Canadians would hold UFC titles and that would awesome!!!!!
MAchida has two black belts…so what?
What do you mean “so what”? That’s a huge accomplishment man.. Machida is also one of the best in the world.
Machida is untested. We’ll see when he fights someone who’s any good. Two black belts doesn’t get you that far. Its a big accomplishment but It doesn’t make a world champion.
