MMAmania.com has confirmed that Jorge Gurgel (12-4) is slated to take on Aaron Riley (26-10-1) in a lightweight bout on the UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” under card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15.

Gurgel — a former contestant on season two of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) — has underwhelmed since his brief stint on the show. He has lost two of his last three and three of six all-time inside the Octagon.

The black belt serves as the head Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor at his successful training facility, JG Mixed Martial Arts, in Ohio that has some top fighters such as Rich Franklin and Dustin Hazelett on its roster.

So it came as quite a surprise when Cole Miller slapped on a submission to finish Gurgel in his most recent performance after an exciting three-round tussle.

It was a devastating loss, but he will have to use it as inspiration and rebound convincingly to demonstrate that he belongs in the crowded UFC 155-pound division.

That, however, will not be very easy against a grizzled and well traveled veteran like Riley who has competed in Pride FC, Bodog and the International Fight League (IFL), among others.

Riley has taken on some of the best in the business and sports losses to Robbie Lawler, Spencer Fisher, Chris Lytle and Eddie Alvarez. And even though he did not come out victorious in those contests, the experience factor alone makes him a dangerous opponent.

His losses to Lawler and Fisher were under the UFC banner, dating back several years. Riley is currently riding a two fight win streak and most recently competed in September.

UFC 91 features the main event between heavyweight champion Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar. In addition, lightweights Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson will do battle for the right to be considered the top title contender in the 155-pound division in the co-feaured fight of the evening.

I for one don’t give a sh!t.One thing, I don’t like Gurgel. Why the f**k does the UFC give him more fights? Are they doin’ him favors or somethin’ just because he’s Jim Carrey’s boy?! Man, another loss and they should dump this BJJ chump!

I was just going to write basically the same thing…what is this guy still doing in the UFC? Must be part of Rich Ace Franklin’s contract that as long as he fights in the UFC, Gurgel must fight as well :)

How does Gurgel keep getting fights in the UFC? He’s boring as hell and hasn’t finished a fight since he’s been there. He couldn’t even finish Danny Abbadi. He should have lost to Saraiva too, that was a b.s. decision. It amazes me everytime I read that he has another fight in the octagon. I hope Riley kicks the shit out of him. War Aaron Riley!!!

that’s why his fights are practically always fight of the night or runner up.

Sorry NC-17 I know Rich is your boy and I like Rich as well but Gurgel isn’t the best guy to corner Franklin since he can’t follow a “Game Plan” himself… I hate fighters that don’t use their head especially when it’s most obvious what they should be doing… Like Hammill Vs Franklin. Hammill was an idiot to stand and trade, but he was being stupid”’ Gurgel does much that same mostly all the time.

Gurgel was doing great against cole miller until he pulled a submission out of his *ss… I don’t hold that against Gurgel… maybe if he keeps using his head and fights smart I’ll warm up to him… but I doubt it.

Not to mention he’s constantly injured. He should stick to coaching. He has a zero percent chance of ever even being considered for a title shot

Aaron Riley is VERY tough. If I’m not mistaken, he broke his jaw in the Fisher fight, or it was the fight prior to that and dumbass Goldy just kept on talking about it.

Riley is a stiff test for any up and coming 155er to see if they are the real deal. We already know that Jorge is not, so I got Aaron picked to win this one.

I have known about this fight for about a month, but considering they were not allowed to announce it I could not say anything.

War Gurgel attempting to slug out another victory when he is a black belt in BJJ.

2008-10-10 16:25:35

Gurgel knows his stuff! And he’s a really nice guy! But, he belongs in the smaller shows where he can do well! He never should have made it to the majors! My guess is, Franklin talked him up to Dana and he took a chance on Jorge more so as a favor to Rich!
