Episode 4 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 gets underway and since the show is titled “Punk” I immediately recall last week’s preview of Junie Browning imploding.

The gang starts out watching UFC 84 and (surprise) Junie and Shane Nelson start playing a two-piece ensemble using 80-proof equipment. Browning then convinces himself in the confessional that he can be the world’s best so long as he can keep his head on straight.

Doesn’t seem like he’s off to a good start.

As expected, the booze hits the cerebral cortex and hilarity (and flying peanuts) ensues. Under attack are any bystanding red shirts with particular exception to one Kyle Kingsbury, who suffers an arm laceration when Junie angrily launches a wine glass at him for the apparent crime of sitting down.

Not to be upstaged, Shane goes on an F-laden tirade which eventually leads to him shoving Roli Delgado to the floor. Delgado is mature enough to not engage so Nelson moves on to Efrain Escudero who also chooses not to take the bait.

Since no one will play rough with the booze brothers, Nelson and Browning are forced to unleash their fury on some unsuspecting patio furniture. Once again the pool is subject to some unwelcome guests including a wicker chair not designed for buoyancy.

Krzysztof Soszynski and Ryan Bader have finally reached their boiling points and have a heart-to-heart well, face-to-face with Browning. After a lot of chest-mashing Bader dumps Junie (and his clothes) in the pool and gets himself baptized in the processed.

After Junie escapes and some more shoving takes place, Junie actually fires off a nice front kick that drops Tom Lawlor by the side of the pool. More chaos from Browning but no one is willing to throw a punch in fear of being tossed from the show.

Junie rages himself out and like last week begins openly weeping and it seems to be enough to diffuse the situation. He goes to bed and the rest of the gang is left to try and sort through what just transpired.

The next day we get an ominous piano solo which of course means Dana White has arrived to sort through the trash. Who get recycled and who gets thrown out?

A hoarse Dana refers to a crying Browning as a punk and a drunk with a huge chip on his shoulder but somehow finds it in his heart to give him a second chance. Nelson gets to stay as well but is forced to fight Escudero later in the show to prove he’s still worthy.

After the match-up is made official, we get a glimpse of each fighter getting prepped in the training gym. Stankie lumbers onto the scene dressed like Captain Freedom in The Running Man.

Meanwhile back at the house, Junie proves he doesn’t need alcohol to be an A-hole and starts getting in Efrain’s face about who-subbed-who in training.

Foreshadowing alert: Efrain smiles and Junie screams.

During the weigh-ins everything goes as planned and we get the usual sound bites from each fighter about why they are the better man.

Team Nogueira’s Efrain Escudero (10-0) vs. Team Mir’s Shane Nelson (11-3)

Round 1: After about thirty-seconds of bobbing and weaving Nelson lands a high kick. He follows that with a soft right and an even softer knee. Nelson misses a punch and they tie-up. Nelson throws him down but Escudero bounces right back up. They tie-up again and exchange knees to the legs. Nelson backs him to the cage and they battle for position. Referee Steve Mazzagatti warns them for inactivity and eventually separates them. They throw leather and each man scores: Nelson with punches, Escudero with knees. Escudero with a takedown and side control. Escudero with some nice elbows. Nelson spins but gives Escudero mount in the process. Escudero busy from the top and may have stolen the round with the late activity.

Round 2: Nelson opens with aggressive striking and pushes Escudero to the cage. Nelson backs off but Escudero meets him again and welcomes him with a takedown. From mount he tries to find his offense but Nelson is making it difficult. After some smothering Nelson gets to his feet and Escudero gets a slow-motion takedown. Nelson rolls him into a leg-lock but Escudero escapes and ends up in guard after Nelson pounces. Nelson goes for broke but upon posturing gets snared in a triangle. Escudero rolls him over and puts all his weight into it. Nelson is forced to tap. Very impressive finish.

The fight started slow but picked up steam along the way. Afterward Junie screams “That’s exactly what the UFC needs, another (expletive) boring-ass (expletive) wrestler!” Escudero just smiles at him which of course enrages him further. Junie keeps screaming and Escudero keeps smiling so Junie jumps into the cage like a psychopath and has to be restrained by Mir and Nogueira.

Fade to black.

Stay tuned next week as Junie flirts with unemployment, two light heavyweights go to-to-toe and the one and only Anderson “The Spider” Silva drops by to school the red cadets.

See you then!

You see there is a big difference b/t diaz and junie. Junie thinks having a hard life makes him special, well it doesn’t. Diaz keeps to himself unless someone bothers him. I would love see Junie get choked out babalu style gurgling in his blood. Gotta love Big Nog -”He’s gonna be the next to be finished.” Btw for some reason, i am really starting to dislike Murrr.

They showed more restraint then I wanted to see. I don’t know what the rules of the show are, but once a guy pushes, and even kicks someone, I would imagine he is free to kick the crap out of him. I worked for a long time as a bouncer, so I understand that sometimes you just have to realize that people get drunk, and say and do stupid things, but that doesn’t mean they can put their hands on you. I would have knocked Junie’s teeth down his throat.

Junie is a total loser. Worst person they ever had on the show. He thinks he’s such a bada$$. He’s a cowardly bully.

I was very impressed by the restraint shown by the rest of the cast as well. They seem like a pretty good bunch of guys.

That dude Nelson seemed like he was about the dumbest TUF contestant since Diego Sanchez. I love how he puffed-up at Escudero and then was obviously scared to fight him once paired with him. The icing on the cake is when Escudero beat him into total submission like a little b*tch.

Great season so far! Where’s your wins at Mir? Can’t wait to see the Spider next week!

Oh, also, I love how Junie was crying about having another wrestler in the UFC but I thought the very classy Escudero put down a well-rounded and fairly entertaining beat-down on Nelson. Escudero broke Nelson with the knees then won via submission! Now what, Junie?

Jer, don’t be an idiot. I started doing martial arts when I was in the 4th grade, and I am 29 years old. I know this is mma, and I just didn’t find out about it last week, or when the TUF shoe aired. I only mentioned that I used to bounce to point out that I know what it is like to have to deal with drunken idiots. 99 times out of 100, I was able to just politely talk them into leaving. The point is that once someone physically attacks you, you don’t have to be so nice anymore.

Lol as soon as Phillipe fainted, I picked him as my favorite fighter to win. It was a roll of the dice but when I saw him fight, it made me confident he could actually take it. I thought the same thing about Junie, I was impressed but after watching what a train wreck he is, I don’t want him to win it. He may be really talented but he is borderline retarded and he shouldn’t have the chance to throw away a great opportunity that some other fighter would cherish with his life.

Nice fake where the top guy thinks he’ll get side control…soon as he thinks he’ll pass your guard, shoot those hips and leg up..and game over..nice finish.

Thoughts on TUF :

Junie has some serious self-esteem issues. The alcohol only brings those problems to the surface.

Yeah, he acts like a d-bag, but I still feel sorry for him because he does not know how else to act. Sad.

Shane, on the other hand, is a poser who got the beat down that he deserved.

Never mess with a guy who just keeps his mouth shut or smiles when you talk smack. Those are the true tough guys.

Efrain is the man.

Junie just hates Efrin and is screaming like a girl for no other reason than he choked the sh*t out of his cronie Shane… Junie is freakin’ ‘CRY BABY’ when’s he’s drunk he’s a mean’ sreaming *sshole when he’s sober.

Manny Gamburyan, Jeremy May, and now Junie Browning, it just keeps getting worst. (Ok, I might be the only one who really hates Gamburyan). After the second episode, the preview of the rest of the season showed Dana saying “You should have been kicked off three times already”. It can only be Browning, I think the UFC has real high hopes for this guy on this season.

Junie is a great fighter and the only reason he’s not off is because of that sole reason. (Also why Shane didn’t go too; can’t send Shane w/o Junie, so they keep him and make him fight.)

I don’t care how they act on the show. Look at Leben and Koscheck: Both were assholes on the show but does anyone remember that now?

Comment by JRK
2008-10-09 09:43:46

Yes, actually I do remember them on the show which is why, for a long time I couldn’t stand either of them. But it’s amazing what a couple of years and a couple of losses will do to someone. They both matured, become more well-rounded and better fighters. Shane Nelson is most likely in the same boat, he’s just too immature with way too much ego at the moment. He probably thinks he’s the next BJ without the brains to back it up. He showed tons of potential in his fights but needed this loss to knock him down a rung or two.

Junie, on the other hand, has probably always been the toughest kid in the trailer park and burned far too many brain cells in the process. You can take the kid out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer out of the kid.

More and more the UFC goes the way of the freak show. We get to look forward to more of this kind of behavior, because they’ll keep bringing in guys like Junie, year after year. All because Dana loves crass behavior. Don’t be surprised if we see Junie on Dana’s new TV show.

That might have been the best episode ever. Good heated house shenanigans and a pretty good fight.

They’ll keep Junie because 1) the drama he creates in the house (the “reality” entertainment aspect) and 2) he’s a good fighter. He’s a total idiot drunk and sober. He’s everything Dana claims he’s against: immature, aggressive, idiot thugs. But, alas, they’ll keep him… and make somebody “beat him off.”

Junie, IMO, has already bested Jesse Taylor in jackassery, and Taylor got yanked from the finals. But Jesse’s tirade was an opportunity for the UFC to create even more drama with no cost. The show was over when Jesse terrorized Vegas. Booting him only made the final show more interesting, and they got a better fighter (Dollaway) to boot. And, they could appear to be crusaders against thuggery. Everybody wins in a pragmatic sense.

So let me get this right….You can have dudes jumping up in another fighters face, push them, hit them, CUT them with a wine glass, throw a drink in their face, threaten them …and then they JUST HAVE TO SIT THERE and not defend them self or get kicked off the show …or not …if you can fight? Nobody will step in at least break it up, This is some punk a$$ Sh!t, I can watch drunks pick fights at my local bar, I lost all respect for Dana after he kept dude on the show and then he JUMPS in the ring to THREATEN some body who just won a fight? junie’s like that retarded kid that we used to pick on in school. with retard strength too. he’s clearly unbalance. even when someone coddles him a little and he cries, he goes back to being paranoid that people are out to humiliate him so he strikes first. he’s out of control though and there’s not much hope for him so they should get rid of him. interesting, but for another show.

Junie is a disgrace to MMA. The UFC has worked hard these last few years to consider MMA a sport and not an act of barbarians. Having fighters act like Junie outside of the ring is disrespectful to the ones who take this sport seriously. If he is not booted from the show like seasons past then I believe that the UFC is not looking for top fighters but only tv personalities. Come on UFC and stand up for your fans.

Comment by Salatious

so you are saying that the best fighter in the world being a barbarian shouldnt be allowed to fight in the UFC? im not saying Junie is the best fighter ever but thats pretty much what yoru statement is saying.

The kid has serious issues, but the kid also has serious skills. he has some growing up to do and i think being in the UFC might help him grow up. fighting in smaller venues wont help him here. Fighting in UFC will put proffesionals around him and mentor him better.

I can’t believe Dana let Junie stay on the show, he is always saying that this sport is not a bunch of idiots and thugs, and this guy is the complete oppesite of what they supposedly want. I myself am much more impressed by the guys with class and education that act like professionals. I was very impressed by the restraint shown by the rest of the contestants, because I am not sure that I could not have just knocked that stupid little f#ck out.

I wonder what would happen if someone, instead of punching him in the face, put him to sleep instead by choking him out. You’re not really hurting him, you’re just neutralizing him and the situation. There was one scene where one of the guys had Junie from behind and Junie had his neck wide open, I was yelling at the TV, “put the little f*cker so sleep! That’ll shut him up!”. Diffuse the situation and nobody gets hurt… would you still get kicked off the show for doing that? Just a thought…

Don’t get me wrong he apparently is doing something right cuz he is shutting Mir out right now, but Nog is funny as hell when he is coaching. He just keeps yelling yes followed by MMA buzzwords..

Junie should be around for at least a few more episodes. I think it was at the end of the second episode, though I am not exactly sure, Dana was in a fighters room saying “You know, you should have been kicked off the show 3 times now”.

Though it would be nice to see Junie turn it around. He does have some skills that many fighters have lacked on this show.

Dana is a selfish man. He straight up asks Junie if he has a drinking problem. Junie says,”Yes, he does have a drinking problem”. Instead of forcing the guy to get treatment for his addiction he let’s him stay on the show. He is serving Dana’s purposes as a reason to watch his reality show. That’s some message your sending Dana about your priorities. This could have been the bottom that Junie needed to hit just like most alcoholics. Dana just prolonged Junie and everyone else’s misery for the sake of ratings.

thsi is nothing new from season 1. thats why there are Booze in the house in the first place. It creats a formula for entertainment. If it didnt there wouldnt be any in the house to begin with. and dotn blame Junie for his second outburst. It happen becasue his close where placed in the water. So other members in the house pushed him to act up the second time.

Dana simply asked if Junie had a drinking problem. Like a man, Junie stepped up and said yes. Dana, in my belief allowed Junie to stay cause he man’d up to his problem.

As for sending him out for rehab…. If you were Junie, and you had the biggest opportunity of your career in front of you, would you be asking for rehab or would you man up and say “I gotta lay off the booze if I want this contract”. Dana probably would have sent him for rehab, still may send him for rehab, but for now he want’s to see what Junie is made of.

Comming from Hawaii we have probably more pride in our hometown heros as any state out there (no offence). But even our local Hilo boy deserved a beat down. He displayed how stupid we can be, and not how HARD, as I’m sure he hoped was displaying. I’m glad he had to TAP. And please Lord let Junies get knocked out! Or at least delivering pizza for the rest of his life, he doesn’t belong in any MMA org. Who the hell is his hometown coach anyway? they should be embarrassed. I know BJ Penn is probably. That dam kid better not mention BJ for the rest of the season, or Hawaii! I’m ashamed. What a loser. He needs to stick to a day job.
