phil baroni

Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni (13-10) was scheduled for a welterweight bout at this Friday’s Strikeforce: “Payback” card in Denver, Colo., against an unannounced opponent.

No longer.

Baroni has been forced to withdraw because of a cut sustained in a unanimous decision win over Mexican fighter Olaf Alfonso last Friday night a Palace Fighting Championships (PFC) 10.

Here’s a snip from Baroni’s agent, Ken Pavia, via MMANews.com:

“In the first round during an exchange Olaf hit Phil with his only big punch of the fight and it cut Phil. It was significant enough that it required six stitches right in his eye lid. Between the first and second round he realized he was cut and he was like ‘Aww Man, now I can’t fight next week.’”

So he knew right away he’d be missing the trip to Denver, but there was nothing he could do to avoid it. He already had the PFC gig booked before ever signing to compete at “Payback,” otherwise he probably would have just took the more high profile spot on the Strikeforce card.

Strikeforce officials knew it, too. They knew he had a scheduled match one week prior to its event, but they took a gamble on him coming out of the bout uninjured and still able to compete.

It’s a gamble the promotion will now have to pay for as the October 3 “Payback” card losses some quality name value with Baroni’s absence. As stated above, there was no opponent announced for “The New York Badass” at the Strikeforce event so it’s unclear if a replacement will even be needed.

The event will still be headlined by the highly anticipated rematch between Denver native Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Sam Morgan, and will be co-main evented by a middleweight bout between Frank Trigg and Niko Vitale.

Fuck Phil Baroni. Dude, I could beat Olaf Alfonso, seriously. Is there and valid reason why anyone would willingly want to write a piece on this less than mediocre fighter thats a total embaraament to himself, his corner, AKA, and the sport of MMA as a whole?

LMAO. If you think you can beat Olaf Alfonzo you must be huffing paint. The guy has fought an hour away from my house about 10 times. He obviously just went all three rounds with the NewYork Badass. I watched him fight Gilbert Melendez wec 10 bragging rights, from the third row. the guy is a good mma fighter. he just hasent had the best of luck lately..

My bad, he is awesome. What was I thinking? You’re right, a 7-9 record with a six fight losing streak at one point and a loss to Gabe Ruediger is a pretty spactacular resume.

the best thing olaf ever did in mma was getting KTFO by razor rob. gotta love that clip, his mouthpiece would have gone a good thirty feet if they werent in the cage.

Im not saying that hes a good mma fighter. im just saying you shouldnt make bold statments, cause good mma fighter or not he is a scraper. even though you pry are right you probebly could beat him up but you couldnt hurt him he is so tuff.

Yet another reason why the UFC’s policy regarding the exclusivity of their fighters makes sense. You don’t run into this kind of mess unless promotions are sharing fighters.

I like watching Phil too. For having a wrestling background you would never know it. Win or loose he brings it (he’s just over 500 so a coin toss is about all you need).

You just knew it made no sense for Strikeforce to sign Baroni to fight on their card when he’s already fighting a mere week before their event.
