Roger Huerta was recently in Toronto, Canada, putting on a seminar at Victory Fight Club.
“El Matador,” of course, is fresh off his first loss inside the Octagon against Kenny Florian last month at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” — a tough unanimous decision defeat that put his immediate title shot hopes on temporary hold.
Glenn Dextras of MMACanada.net recently caught up with Huerta to discuss the effects of his first loss in the UFC, the “greasing” accusations from Florian after the fight, how he contributes his time outside of the world of MMA and much more.

I don’t think Roger would cheat but they “ARE” ways to slip through a fight.
Roger vs Nate Diaz! Lets see it Joe!
i like nate in that fight. you know huerta would go for the takedown and nate would catch him in something sooner or later. i dont look at roger the same way i did before the money complaints and the florian loss. he came across as a “diva” wanting to be treated a certain way before he paid his dues. hopefully the florian loss will bring him back down to earth a little bit. i think nate is gonna be a great fighter and i like his chances at holding the lw title in a couple of years as long as b.j. isnt there.
Yea b.dub. Huerta killed it for me too! A “diva” is exactly what he was acting like. The video wouldnt load, what was his excuse for the slippery thing?
it was a 12 minute video and i could only make it through about 3mins of it. ha! so i didnt hear his excuse, im sure it was the same old thing, “i didnt do anything different than any other fight” type excuse.
i liked huerta before i started watching his interviews… exciting fighter, undefeated, good looking, how can u not like the guy? then i started reading about him wanting all this money, crying about all this other bs, saying hes the best and hell never lose, how hell never fight gsp cuz there “boys” blah blah blah, whatever huerta, beat some top competition before running your mouth
lol, beat some competition before you start running ur mouth? that was too funny, you almost made it out to seem like he has something like a 2-0 record when you said that.
He has a great record, but he hasn’t beaten the toughest opponents. His best win was over Guida, and he had to pull that one out of his ass. Before that, most of his opponents were not what one would consider top tier.
Nate vs. Huerta would be a great fight. Huerta has great sub defense (see the Crane fight), but Nate’s jits is more acclimated to MMA. A win over Huerta put Kenny back to #1 contender so it would be great for Nate as well. He is 5-0 in the UFC so I think the winner of Sherk/Tyson would be a better fight for him as far a propelling him to contension.
Nates got great ground game but he really didn’t impress me with his last fight. I’m sorry thats wrong he impressed me but not to the point where I thought he stood a chance at taking the LW title. His stand up in unique but its not going to get him anywhere if he were to face any guy in the top 5 LW game. I don’t think they should throw him to the wolves just yet. Penn, Sherk, Florian, Kenny, Stevenson… these guys have more than just a ground game (Sherks stand up in the Penn fight did actually impress me, he had really good hand speed and probably would have been tearing his opponent apart had it not been Penn). Nate’s got a long way to go but he is definetly going to be a top contender in the LW division.
Nate/Huerta would be good! I think Nate needs to start fighting the bigger names already. And Nate needs to stop trying to act like Nick IMO. In his regular interviews he sounds normal.
After the last UFN when Nick started getting into it with someone, Nate got up and walked away. I think he is smart enough to realize the oppotunity he has and will mellow out as he matures. He seems to be the more level headed of the 2. I think if he beats the winner of Sherk/Tyson he deserves a title shot, Huerta will not get him that, yet.
i agree. if nate can distance himself from nick’s shenanigans, he’ll be great. i know there brothers and will stick together through thick or thin, but hopefully nick will ACT like and older brother and not hender nate. i already feel nate is a better fighter than nick is right now. nate is more well-rounded imo, using great judo throws to get his opponenets down. ive never seen nick use those kind of throws, why not i wonder?, since they train together.
We will never see it, but if they fought today I would put my money an Nate. Imagine how much he will improve by the time he is Nick’s age!
Nate would win for sure. It would be a geat fight, I don’t think Roger would be dumb enough to take Nate down. He is just too good.
Forget Nate vs. Huerta. I want to see Huerta vs. Lauzon, or Huerta vs. Danzig would be bad ass.
I think Nate should get a shot at Tyson Griffin after he looses to sherk
Or Huerta v Pelligrino even
Can’t I hear nada.. =(
I heard in a Nick Diaz article that.. He is tired of hearing about Roger this and Huerta that.. that his lil bro would woop his ass..
I would like to see this fightit happen.
I can’t get it to run at all
What’s his excuse?
there is no excuse, cause Huerta didn’t cheat.. what he said was that it was a low blow by Kenny for calling him out on that and that both he and Kenny knew that he didn’t have anything on him, kenny should just admit that i’m good on the ground but you know what man we can do it again if he’s not satisfied with his win.. Roger is the man of the LW division and i hope the old Huerta returns in his next fight!
Huerta doesn’t have the Houston Alexander syndrome.
He didnt have any excuses — He said it wasnt a fact; he didndt have any goo or gunk on himself. He said that Kenny should’ve been a graceful winner, that is, won and kept his mouth shut. He, Huerta, also said “Kenny beat me on a point system, if he’s not happy, we can do it again.”
Huerta has lost me as a fan…
i dont see how you can just say he lost you as a fan by saying the honest truth. huerta did get beat by kenny. but kenny should realize how good huerta is. he couldnt finish him and did beat him in point system by unanimous decision. fair win for kenny and a fair loss for huerta. but i dont see what the point is of jenny syaing something so ridiculous and premodona like that. he said” he was slick on the ground, i know put him in some bad positions that i know no normal fighter can get out of. once kenny sticks his mount there is no escaping” kenny i sjust upset he looked frustrate din tyring to finish huerta. he should be a graceful fighter and just stick to his win and be happy with it. and by the way NEWGUY none of these guys have lost me as fighter…they were both honest about their opinions.
Why? He’s not the one dragging anyone’s name through the mud. Ken is the one who started the mud slinging after he WON.
im still a preety big fan of huerta nd i hope he can get back in the ufc and get some wins a fight with nate whould be intresting i think huerta could pull it out but u know hes gotta keep it standing cause nate cant stand for shit so i would say tko for huerta
nate and herta whould be a great fight i say huerta wins by tko on the ground i would be intrested to see how he does against nates submitions but i still say huerta hes more well rounded then nate nates preety much good at submitions and defending submitions nd u know not bad on the ground but his stand up needs alot of work
I totally agree with you satiago69us, Huerta did not have anything on him. Because KenGo (because he ran the whole fight) couldn’t pin him down means Huerta had something on him? Maybe KenGo is not as good as HE thinks. Sure, he won by points, but I was totally unimpressed with his running style. If you want to impress then fight it out, don’t run, leave no doubt who the winner is. And for all you chumps who say Huerta is second tier because he lost then what does that make KenGo?? KenGo deserves a title shot for beating second tier fighters?? Come on, you can’t have it both ways. Huerta has done nothing to lose me as a fan, the man speaks from the heart.
I think that some of the posts on here are moronic, the guy gives a decent interview letting people know who he is and what he does and is into and then the feedback from some people here all I can say to those negative posters is get a life. And then the comments about the diaz brothers handicapped hillbilly show, they are the two biggest jack?sses in mma, ya they were really cool going into the ring to knock kj after he beat yves, they were probably stoned, how many times has nick been stripped of wins because he tested positive for being a pothead?
huerta is an idiot and this was 12 minutes of backtracking comments he made earlier about the ufc, the jackson camp, where he wants to fight etc.
he didn’t have a reason for being slippery.
and why was this interviewer asking what he dating status was?? brutal
and maybe someone can correct me but didn’t he lose to melvin guillard before coming to the ufc??
That loss was overturned because Melvin was caught greasing. Kind of ironic Kenny said that about Huerta.
” he won on a points system, whatever” what is that supposed to mean? I understand being pissed about Kenny’s comments, but don’t make an equally ignorant comment in return. What is he suggesting? That a win off of points doesn’t mean much?
Huerta didn’t get finished by Florian, so what. He was certainly out skilled by him the entire fight. A win is a win.
Yeah, that’s what Huerta said too
Keep putting Huerta against solid fighters so we keep getting great interviews like this.
I would love to see huerta/diaz…but know what i would like to see more?…
HUERTA/DANZIG
they are both top tier fighters coming off of losses and both are great standup guys!
just my opinion, but i would love to see this fight
I really don’t get all this Diaz/Huerta talk. I think Huerta would walk right through Nate. All I see in Nate is a guy who wants to flop down on his back and put guys in a triangle. This is MMA not submission wrestling. I think he needs to tune up the other aspects of his game before taking on a guy like Huerta.
Its one thing to run your mouth, its a little tougher to back it up. Nate will get exposed very soon as a one trick pony. Then its back to the gym to work on something besides BJJ.
Not submisson wrestling - so winning by tapout isnt really winning. winning by submisson in a mma match, submitting guys when fists are thrown at your face isnt impressive. Call out Big Nog then and he will snap your arm, moron.
Tougher to back it up - hes 5-0 om the UFC?
Tune up the other aspects - WTF do you think he is doing. He is evolving asa a fighter and is better every time we see him. He has solid boxing and its getting better, and last fight we saw some beautful judo throws.
So whats up yuur a$$, frickin jalapeno on a stick!
Dude this is MY opinion of Nate’s fighting skills. Apparently you are the President of the Diaz fan club and want to get all butt hurt about my comments. Call it like you see it and I’ll do the same.
Did I ever say Diaz wasn’t improving?? I posted that he wasn’t ready for the likes of Huerta. Try some READING COMPREHENSION before you post next time fanboy.
And saying Big Nog would snap my arm is really a toolbox comment. ANY professional athelete would own my a s s at their sport. Thats why they are called professionals.
Judging by your screen name apparently you are a big fan of BJJ. While I can appreciate the skill involved I like to see more of a mixed bag during a fight. Two well rounded fighters using ALL aspects of the game.
