Former UFC veterans Sam Hoger and Sean Salmon returned to action over the weekend after long layoffs to register wins at separate shows, getting their respective careers back on winning paths.

Salmon — who is perhaps best known for the highlight reel knockout loss to Rashad Evans — defeated Mitch Whitesel via third round technical knockout at the Hoop Sports Complex in Columbus, Ohio, to win the North American Allied Fight Series (NAAFS) middleweight title.

He was winless inside the Octagon (0-2); however, Salmon has won six of his last eight fights ever since being released.

The former collegiate wrestler recently won an almost year-long battle to have the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) reinstate him after his knockout loss to Jorge Santiago under the Strikeforce banner — officials were concerned that he had a seizure in the cage while unconscious.

Hoger emerged from a 16-month self-imposed hibernation to compete against late replacement Jason Doloff at World Championship Fighting (WCF) 4 at Aleppo Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass., on September 19.

The heavyweight bout didn’t last long – the “Alaskan Assassin” scored a 17-second first round technical knockout, which was set up by a kick to the face.

Hoger — who starred on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter — had dropped his last three fights, including two decision losses to Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans, respectively. Prior to the win, he was choked out by Vernon White in has last appearance in an International Fight League (IFL) show back in April 2007.

He took a blow from action to start up his own Miletich Fighting System (MFS) academy in Houston, Texas.

For anyone who’s watched MMA (and fighting in general), there is a rule that becomes evident pretty quickly. The ugly guy usually wins. Ugly fighters are successful. Tim Sylvia, Big Nog, Wanderlei Silva, Fedor, Kimbo, etc.

Sean Salmon is the exception to this rule. You’d think, based on his looks alone, he’d have racked up about 50 wins. But, in defiance of his looks, he sucks.

Sean Salmon would be a good fighter if he would pick a gym to train for a fight!! That guy really never had a real training camp to get him ready. He just relied on wrestling and thats it. Sad thing too.

sean has picked a gym to train at….he’s working out at the relson gracie academy in columbus. sean also had a training camp this time around working muay thai and bjj. his standup is getting very good and his cardio was the best it’s ever been. he completely dominated witesel from start to finish. sean had a couple of bad knockouts true, but he had no seizures ever. he’s got some things to work on(like everyone) but has improved dramatically over the past 6 months.

Wp – One show makes you a veteran, technically.

Perhaps two seizures and a near death experience makes you a veteran.

I was at the WCF 4 event — Hoger did indeed throw a head kick, but it didn’t connect. Hoger’s original opponent dropped out, and his replacement was definitely not up to par and out of shape. The most interesting thing about that fight was Hoger weighed in at 251…pretty obvious that he didn’t train for this fight.
