kj noons
Props: ProElite.com

Quoteworthy:

“We are stripping KJ of his championship belt for refusing to defend against Diaz. It’s a very unfortunate situation but we cannot have belt-holders who refuse to fight the top contenders. We want champions who will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace. That’s the mentality all champions should have…. I feel very bad for KJ because I like him a lot on a personal level and have always thought he could be a big star. He’s charismatic, has a very exciting fighting style and is a top level fighter. So I’m obviously disappointed that he has chosen to take this stance…. KJ has two more fights remaining on his contract, so we are still looking forward to having him fight for us again soon, but not as our world champion.’’

Elite XC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen announces that the promotion has had enough of the back-and-forth with its lightweight champion and has stripped him of his 160-pound belt. Noons defeated Nick Diaz to win the first-ever lightweight championship and then defended the belt just once against Yves Edwards. Diaz — who won several fights during that time to get back in contention — was then labeled the number contender. Noons and his management team didn’t agree, saying that a fighter like Eddie Alvarez was a more worthy opponent. So when Noons refused to fight Diaz at Elite XC: “Heat” on CBS “Saturday Night Fights” on October 4 the promotion apparently felt as if it had no other choice but to use the only ace left up its sleeve. Noons was not cut, but it’s hard to imagine that he would want to continue fighting for the promotion. In the past he’s expressed an interest to box on the professional circuit, which provides him with other opportunities if he so chooses.

I can’t believe that someone would rather give up their belt than rematch the guy he fought for it. With balls that small there is no point in ever wearing a cup.

I am sure he will do great in boxing, since his hands were so much more effective than Krazy Horse.

If only Noons would have taken Nick Diaz’s advice all that time ago: “Don’t be scared homie!” he may not be in this situation. Noons, why don’t you go box with cushiony gloves on where you don’t have to worry about getting slammed and submitted? Noons, you might very well be the biggest p*ssy punk chump in the history of MMA. Here’s to hoping your face gets bashed in whether it be in p*ssy *ss boxing or MMA.

Funniest thing out of all of this is the fact that if (i mean when) elite goes under, UFC would never pick this douche up. His stand up isn’t that great to become a boxer, so he better go fill out those aps at wal mart and target! what a pussy…plain and simple!!

they’re right! if you’re a champion, you must be able to fight the top contender….anytime, anyplace. no matter who it may be. diaz definitely won several fights in order to put him back at the top as the “number one” contender spot, therefore, he deserves that title shot.
as for noons, he’s a bad-ass fighter. no-doubt, he’s an exciting/explosive fighter to begin with, and any organization will pick him up ONLY if he had his priorities straight. he should just take that match with diaz and prove he’s a champion.
overall, it’s understandable as to why he’s being stipped.

You guys obviously missed Noons’ response to Elite XC bashing him before this. He said its not about fighting Diaz, though he would rather Alverez, its about his pay. They refuse to give him more even though he has beaten two top fighters and Diaz would get triple his pay in a rematch. He doesn’t find that fair. Also he wants to box as was agreed in his contract but he isn’t being set up with matches. Don’t call fighters bit*ches unless you fight yourself.

sorry mex, i usually agree with you but i don’t think the contracts are fair, Because they give all the power to the companies and none to the fighters. they can cancel your contract if they are not happy with you, but if your not happy with what the company does for you your a bitch or a punk for not allowing them to treat you like their slave. we fighters need a union just like all the other sports leagues.

But Easy, why would he refuse to fight Diaz over pay, but would be willing to fight Alverez? He’d get the same pay either way. Diaz’s name sells fights and gets viewers, Noons’ doesn’t. If KJ stepped up and beat Diaz a second time, his draw would increase, as would his ability to bargain for a bigger paycheck. I’ve read every single thing posted on here and other sites over this subject, and his arguements are WEAK! Did you see Diaz’s rebutle to Noons statements? Am I a pro fighter? NO. But I feel very justified in calling KJ a b*tch. I have enormous respect for anyone who steps into the cage/ring, but he’s not stepping in. Or stepping up. Name one other time in fighting history where a champion refused to fight the #1 contender and still retained the belt. I’m not bashing you by the way, but I do strongly disagree.

Comment by dave
2008-09-20 01:52:15

If his pay isn’t fair, then he shouldn’t have signed the contract. If he wants a better pay, then finish your contract in style so that Elite HAS to up your money. I hate it when people want entitlements that they haven’t earned, or when they already agreed to something different. Look at Chuck’s losses to Rampage or Jardine! Jardine made a small fraction of what Liddel made after beating him. Same can be said of Rashad. Clearly he isn’t a true blooded fighter.

I agree with you and lee maury. I’m just stating that this story isn’t telling all sides and Diaz isn’t the main reason Noons wont fight. He will fight Diaz but he doesn’t think, on principle, that someone he already beat should be making 3x as much as him. I think Diaz should make 5-10x as much as Noons. I don’t think Noons would have as much of an issue with fighting Alvarez for less because he has become a true top 5 lightweight. Also Noons listed a few other little issues he had but mostly they seemed like he was whining. I see him getting picked up by the UFC and fighting Nate Diaz.

i am a firm believer that once you sign a contract you should stick to it
fair enough try to negotiate a new longer contract on improved terms
but if one cant be agreed you live up to what your signature agreed upon

if you are the champion in any sport you shouldnt be allowed to decline legitimate challengers

if mma starts allowing champions to decide who they fight, then itll go the same way as boxing

these guys make plenty of cash through sponsorship and holding seminars and training people.

there are 2 reasons for ducking an opponent

1 YOU ARE A COWARD
2 your mind isnt right or you have agents and other money grabbers messing everything up (Kim coutoure and the hollywood agent)

noons looks like a coward
he knows diaz could beat him any day of the week and twice on sunday
nick would of clawed out a victory in the first match if there was a proper ufc ref and ufc doctors who actually understand the sport

The belt won’t mean shit when EXC is gone, but they aren’t gone today are they? His rep has been damaged for having the belt stripped from him. It would have looked a lot better for KJ if he was the champ when EXC closes their doors as opposed to being the whiner kid who had his belt taken away for refusing to fight. If KJ were to fight for UFC would you care to see him fight anyone now? What if he was the guy who was the champ before they had to go out of business? Sounds a lot better the second way, right?

screw NICK, screw NATE, why should KJ fight NICK again after he already beat him once. Heres a little something about the ELITE XC. NICK shouldnt even be a top contender, everyone saw how he bitched out and flipped the cameras off when he was walking away after his loss to KJ. Dont we teach our athletes about respect and integrity. Does anyone realize how many kids were watching that looked up to NICK. And if you look it up, KJ is the champ for elite, right? Then why would they pay NICK twice as much money as KJ to fight in the rematch? I wouldn’t give him a fight either. NOW do you guys really beleive that KJ is whimping out. THINK AGAIN.. I know the facts. As far a NATE goes, hes a fag to. To BJ PENN, NATE would be considered a sparring partner at most. PENN would slap him around like the girl he is. Liddell and Couture fought three times. Liddell defended his title against Tito a second time after knocking him out the first time. Sylvia and Arlovski fought three times. Last season the Cowboys beat the Giants twice during the season but still had to play them a third time in the playoffs. Point is that just because someone holds one win over someone else doesn’t mean they have a lifetime free pass over that person. Your argument holds no water.

Comment by Fightlife
2008-09-20 12:04:08

You’re right, BJ would handle Nate for sure. But about teaching fighters about respect, that’s done in the cage. If KJ wanted to teach the Diaz brothers respect, he should’ve fought them. Money aside. In the long run, win or lose, he would’ve made way more money on the rivalry. And if KJ lost he probably would’ve been granted a rubber match. All in all this was a bad decision by KJ. He’s tarnished his name in MMA. If he would’ve taken the high road and played the game he would’ve made out much better. Their is only room for one villain in this story, and that role was taken by Nick years ago.
At the end of the day it is the companies with the power and the fighter is forced to leverage any power they can gain through fights and outside of the ring. KJ should’ve learned from Nick’s past with the UFC, either play the game or you’re out.

Everyone love Nick Diaz??
Let’s see…tested positive for drugs after the Gomi fight… Failed to make weight before other fights…almost always makes a jackass of himself after fights…made a jackass of himself at his brother’s post-fight interview.

How many watched the Gomi fight? If Gomi had not back off and begged the ref to end the fight because of what he was doing to Nick, it would have been over. Nick was almost at flash knockout point when he locked in the Gogoplata. The same people will bash some one for sand bagging looking for a lucky submission but then jump on Diaz’s jock.

That being said…I understand what EXC is trying to do and putting the title in the hand of one of your 3 (Diaz, Carano, Kmbo) most marketable fighters is a good move if you want to make money.

It’s bull crap how they keep calling out KJ Noons because he wont fight Diaz. What has Diaz done to get a title shot? It has not even been 4 months since KJ fought and he is already stripped. awww kj, you was supposed to be the “bad guy”, the tito of elitexc. they’re the 2nd most mainstream org the fastest growing sport in the U.S. your face was on T.V. who cares if everybody is hating? that just means they know your name. when they stop talking about you, then thats when you gotta start worrying. why do you think Brock makes more than Big Nog? nobody’s talking about Big Nog.

cmon, give it another shot. stick around and just keep winning fights and then boom before you know it, big bucks will come. theres always dream and UFC looking for talent. no bus boy ever made 6 figures. look at all those guys on the reality show, strikeforce, shoxc. nobody knows them. its a good oppertunity but a dirty game. come back and fight Nick! and if theres a possiblity that you win, you can shut all the haters up and i told you so all day!

Hmmm…Wildman Denny or Yves Edwards? Yeah right! Eddie Alvarez just fought Hellboy and Kawajiri. Eddie and KJ is a much more exciting fight. I don’t need to see another rofl pwnage on Nick Diaz’s “scar tissue” or whatever as if he’s Ricky Hatton. All you Nick Diaz supporters are hilariously biased with absolutely nothing to say save for he kicked Gomi’s ass etc. KJ’s boxing is much better than Gomi’s. Smegmites>Nick Diaz supporters. Sakurai, Sakurai, Sakurai…
