UFC Fight Night 15: “Diaz vs. Neer” is set to go down Wednesday, September 17, 2008, from the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska. The television event airs LIVE on Spike TV at 8 p.m. ET.
Remember: MMAmania.com will provide LIVE updates and blow-by-blow, round-by-round commentary of the main card action throughout the telecast. As usual, it promises to be a great discussion during an exciting line up of fights.
To get us pumped for the festivities, MMAmania.com Editor and Senior Writer Jesse Holland (that’s me) will be breaking down the main event matches and revealing each fighter’s keys to victory.
If you’re looking for an unbiased and objective examination of each contest, then I’m happy to report you will be extremely disappointed.
Why else do you think I would depose the former contributors and take this act solo like the selfish blowhard you already know me to be?
But enough about me, at least for the time being.
Let’s get cracking:
Nate Diaz (9-2) vs. Josh “The Dentist” Neer (24-6-1)
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the growing number of TUF graduates evolving into top contenders and Season 5 winner Nate Diaz should be no exception. A disciple of Cesar Gracie like his brother Nick, the younger Diaz has an unorthodox striking attack that is complemented by an exceptional ground game. His last six wins have all come via submission and while he doesn’t have KO power, he can pepper you with strikes until the floor seems like a viable option. However as Kurt Pellegrino found out at Fight Night 13, it usually isn’t. Still, I’m not convinced that a veteran opponent like Josh Neer, who has three times the experience Diaz does, will fall into that trap. Neer also has the advantage of having faced Nick Diaz at UFC 62, giving him a pretty good idea of what to expect. “The Dentist” is 7-1 in his last eight fights and he’s stronger and more aggressive than Diaz. This is a very difficult fight to predict because any winning scenario presented (for both fighters) is plausible. In the end I can see Neer taking this one based on his ability to control the pace of the fight. If Neer can maintain a persistent yet controlled attack (and avoid getting triangled), he can pull this off.
Keys to victory:
Diaz: You’ve used more triangles than Euclid since your debut in 2004 and that’s why you’re going to ignore them here. Predictability is a precursor to defeat which is why a guillotine or rear naked choke is the submission of choice. Frustrate him and the opening will come.
Neer: Houston Alexander names you as the fighter he models himself after. You submitted Melvin Guillard with your forehead split in half and a mouthful of blood. Use that toughness to keep him on the defensive but don’t go for the finish unless you’re sure you can end it. That’s how a dominating victory turns into a submission loss.
Prediction: Neer by split decision
Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (23-9) vs. Mac Danzig (18-4-1)
It’s winner of The Ultimate Fighter 6 vs. the man they wouldn’t let on The Ultimate Fighter 5 in a battle for lightweight supremacy. Mac Danzig is an excellent fighter with great submission skills. Just ask him and he’ll be happy to tell you. Aside from his humility, Danzig does have talent. But will it be enough to overcome a madman like Clay Guida? For me this fight is a huge turning point in Danzig’s career. If he’s to be considered an elite lightweight, it’s not enough to whip out a submission after getting pummeled for two rounds ala Guida/Huerta at the finale for TUF 6. Danzig needs to repel the inevitable onslaught and finish it early. That’s no easy task against someone like Guida, who’s had some memorable wars and gone the distance against top lightweights like Marcus Aurelio, Tyson Griffin and Gilbert Melendez. Danzig on the other hand has only faced one decent lightweight in the past couple of years when he took on Hayato “Mach” Sakurai at PRIDE 33 and he ended up flat on his face. It’s not enough to say you’re the best, you have to actually prove it. Dominating a warrior like Clay Guida both on the feet and on the ground would be a helluva good start. Make or break time Mr. Danzig.
Keys to victory:
Guida: Keep the pressure on and take him out of his comfort zone. Pick him up and slam him against the cage like your putting up drywall. Rinse and repeat for three rounds – and please don’t give up your back.
Danzig: Avoid damage. Make him think that he’s one-dimensional by stuffing every attack. Crisp strikes and a sound defense will prove that it’s indeed finesse over fury.
Prediction: Danzig by submission
Ed “Short Fuse” Herman (14-6) vs. Alan “The Talent” Belcher (12-5)
This is an intriguing match-up for me because both fighters are 3-3 in the Octagon since their debuts in 2006. Are they destined to be .500 fighters or can they break out to the next level? The UFC middleweight division is stacked higher than a Jenga tower and is about as stable. If you have to share a weight class with Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson and Anderson Silva, you had better be setting off fireworks every chance you get. Herman has shown to be a tough, well-rounded competitor, but he can be submitted by a good ground fighter. I don’t think that Belcher is strong enough on the ground to end it and I can’t see Herman going head first into a guillotine ala Sean Salmon, so this is going to be decided in the stand-up. Belcher needs to establish the jab and keep Herman out of the clinch. “Short Fuse” cut his teeth with Team Quest so you know he’s ready for some inside fighting. I’m not expecting a lengthy feeling-out process so Belcher had better be running on a full tank of gas. Herman had his first KO against a winded Joe Doerksen at UFC 78 and he’s already said he’s looking forward to his second. That might be playing into Belcher’s strength, but keep in mind “The Talent” has only been submitted once in 17 fights.
Keys to victory:
Herman: You won the consolation contract from Dana White and are 3-3 since your debut. It’s time to make a statement about your future. Hopefully that statement isn’t “I stink”. A little bloodlust goes a long way.
Belcher: Plan on spending a good amount of time being pushed into the cage. Utilize the knees and if you end up on the ground, think unorthodox when it comes to submissions. Remember that toe hold against Evert Fyeet? Exactly.
Prediction: Herman by unanimous decision
Houston “The Assassin” Alexander (8-3) vs. Eric “Red” Schafer (9-3-2)
Ladies and gentlemen we’ve finally reached our one-sided fight of the evening. If you haven’t been paying attention, Fight Night 15 is live from Omaha, the same city where Houston Alexander has his radio show on Power 106.9. Believe me when I tell you Houston Alexander is to Nebraska what Georges St. Pierre is to Canada. And don’t think for a second that the man with over 200 fights is going down to Eric Schafer in front of his home town. Not never. Granted, “Red” has a competent submissions game but I saw him fold up like a beach chair under the pressure of Michael Bisping and Stephan Bonnar. What’s going to happen when he has a raging bull come straight at him in front of an auditorium full of screaming Cornhuskers? Alexander needs this win badly. The loss to Thiago Silva is excusable, but the KO loss to James Irvin definitely did some damage to the mystique (or as Elitists would say, he was “Exposed”). No one expects an overnight evolution nor does he need one. Eric Schafer may come in a gamer, but he’s going out as game. Not to be too graphic, but the ringside spectators might want to bring a plastic tarp like the ones they used to whip out during a Gallagher concert.
Keys to victory:
Alexander: Swing for the fences. You’re too strong and too vicious for anything he has to offer. A chokeslam like you had at UFC 78 would send the crowd into a frenzy.
Schafer: Not since Bugsy Malone and Leroy Smith has there been such an odd pairing. Speaking of Malone, maybe you can fight dressed like one of Dandy Dan’s hoodlums. Just make sure your insurance is up-to-date.
Prediction: Alexander by KO

I agree with all except for the main event. I have Diaz by unanimous descision
I don’t see Diaz winning a descision, I hope he wins, but I think he needs to submit him in the 1st or early 2nd.
i will not doubt diaz anymore.. maybe nick against noons 2 but nate showed that he can get a beating and pull of some BJJad give the 3 finger!!…
Nate will win via: triangle choke!
Nate won’t win, trust me…His triangle choke will be well-guarded…
betters wanting to win money:
Lauzon
Herman
Wilson
Call it a night and watch your dough Stack!
IS ANYONE FINDING ODDS TO TONIGHTS FIGHTS???? other than the main event? There are several fights I want to bet on, and I have hit my last few UFN and TUF finale parlays.
I don’t consider Herman over Belcher to be a lock. But I do have Wilson Gouviea as a lock to win. Ryan Jenson is staring to rival Charles McCarthy for the ol’ Tupperware nickname.
I do like Mac Danzig to beat Clay Guida. Yesterday, it seemed like about 80% of the people here think that Clay will win. Hoepfully odds will be posted and I can get Mac as a small underdog!
I am most likely not going to be bettting on the main event. As everyone knows, the Diaz’s along with a couple others are my favorite fighters. Given the odds for this fight, I like money on Neer, however, I will NOT bet against Nate because I will be rooting for him 110% and then if he wins, I’m like “dang, I just lost money”. It would put a damper on my happiness.
BoDog has the other fight listed, but no odds. If you plan on betting on Neer, he is now +170 on BoDog.
SHOW ME THE ODDS!
vM: I have seen you make the same mistake in a few threads,. and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the fights are NOT tonight. Tomorrow is fight night, so if you are planning on finishing the work day and going home to an exciting night of betting and action, you will have to wait another day my friend.
Not a lot of odds posted as of yet. No worries by tomorrow there should be odds on about 7 fights. Im not betting the main event eiter. I dont want to bet against Nate and Neer scares me. I also believe the Mac will win the fight, but I hope I am wrong. I just cant go with clay because he hasnt shown the ability to win the big ones, but I will sure root for him over what PW accurately describes as the “Smug Vegan”!
VM: sorry to break it about tonight…..tune into the Sheild to help pass the night!
Is tonight the premier of the final season???
I have been SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO buisy at work the past week and that is why I have not been posting much at all. I was so buisy I lost track of what day it was this morning. When I realized it, like a half hour after posting, I became very depressed…
Its the 3rd episode of the Final season.
i will not doubt diaz anymore.. maybe nick against noons 2 but nate showed that he can get a beating and pull of some BJJ…
Nate will win via: triangle choke!
Does anyone know if any sites will be streaming this event live? Ike knowcked my power out so Im using the local Burger King Wi-Fi. Yea, Im pathetic.
Sure why not hope the fights live up to the hype.
Houston Alexander all the way!! that is the only interesting fighter on the card really.. the others are good but they are not even close to having the same charisma as Houston!
Maybe they don’t have his “charisma”, but thank God they all have more skill.
Diaz by submission
Guida by unanimous decision
Herman by TKO
Schafer by submission
I think its diaz who takes this… Diaz by submission.
Houston’s going to get embarassed in front of the hometown crowd.
look, he’s going to manhandle the fat boy.. 1st round KO for sure don’t blink!
I have that same feeling, but Jesse changed my mind….he wont go down in front of his home town! Then again….who ever thought Rashad would KO Chuck Liddell??? Maybe Eric will KO Houston lol! Cant wait to see some free fights!!!
bunch of wild cards if you ask me… as john put it earlier on a different thread, lauzon is an absolute lock, and in my opinion, the only one of the nite… theres just too many randoms, ifs, and buts in all these fights to bet on… im taking sakara and lauzon and staying away from the main card
Houston Does Have A Brittle Glass Jaw
That has yet to be determined. Sandman is nicknamed that way for a reason.
That actually isn’t that far fetched of an idea. Houstons chin might not hold up too well. It’s hard to determine. Thiago Silva had some brutal ground and pound on him adn that punch from Irvin was crazy. If Houston really had a glass jaw, I think he would have been knocked out by Sakara.
Jardine would have too. He nailed HA with the kind of shots that KOed Forrest before he recovered and turned the tables.
Diaz by sub
Danzig by TKO
Herman by TKO
Houston by KO
FOTN should go to Danzig/Guida. Danzigs takedown defense will be key here.
diaz ..sub
danzig ..sub
belcher ..split
houston ..tko
should be an exciting night! cant wait
Hey Maniacs, I know there are a few of you that are taking MMA or various forms of martial arts. I’m looking to get myself and my kids into something (I really want to take Muay Thai). can anyone fill me in on avg prices for family (haven’t gotten return calls from the gyms yet), or any info at all would be helpful. Thanks. my email is jts2cm@hotmail.com.
where are you from bud?
richmond, va. Not but so many gyms my side of town (seems like all the best ones are 45 minutes away). Not to mention, I’m hearing horror stories about a lot of places charging out the @ss and giving away belts like candy on Halloween.lol I don’t care about belts, I just want the training for the fun and the workout. Lifting weights is making me stronger, but I need something more interesting than jogging for my cardio. So I figured, hey what’s some bruises, black eyes and getting a few teeth knocked down my throat?
well i dont know about richmond, i coulda vouched for a few places down here in southern california… dont give up though! muay thai, jiu jitsu, pankration… all those classes will give u the best workout you can imagine…
I’m on board for Neer to win. He is one tough sob, and I think can grind out a close win. Pretty much every fight I see Nate in he is losing, then pulls out a nice sub. I think Neer’s experience will keep him safe.
I love under dogs you never know, one thing is for sure he could come out on this one and go all out and beat Diaz.
Neer got destroyed by Nick apparently. Nick will probably give Nate some sort of idea on how to win like that as well. Nate needs to bulk up and work on his stand up and take downs. He is already a force but if he gets his game more well rounded, he could certainly dominate convincingly.
Diaz is going to get killed. He got lucky against Batman. Neer is going to knock this kid out. He’s not that good. Gamburyn was going to destroy him still he popped his shoulder out of socket.
British Prostitute was just going to lay on Nate for three rounds, not destroy him.
I agree with all of those, except for Guida/Danzig. Although either can win, I think that Guida is going to come in even better than usual and overwhelm Mac.
Lol NostraDumbass Good one Mania wish I thought of it myself…
afree with most but i think danzig ends it early I think he’ll take a little punishment but he’ll find a way to take his back and guillotine him
Diaz – Rd2 sub
Guida – Rd2 tko
Belcher – UD
Houston(for now, though i am sensing an unexpected upset in the stand up exchanges) – Rd1 KO
Nate sub
Guida UD
Belcher tko
Houston tko
I have to disagree about your prediction regarding Danzig/Guida.
I think that Guida’s agressive pressure and crazy skills will overwhelm the less experienced Danzig.
less experienced? maybe in the UFC, but by not much otherwise. Danzig by TKO or Sub in round 2.
And Diaz by flying armbar while flicking the cameras off on the way down. haha
But seriously, why not triangle again? Every opponont he had so for after TUF has known about his dangerous guard, and especially the trangle, but he still catches them. So why not…
I’m taking diaz and guida but the rest I agree with you on
Neer by Stoppage round 2
Clay Guida via Decision
Eric Schafer via Submission
Ed Herman via Ground and Pound stoppage round 3.
You underestimate Red on this…that is good…Hope Houston overlooks him too…could be a fatal mistake. Red is ready for this fight. And my man Clay is going to kill Danzig….looking forward to watching these live…never been to one…but too many of our training partners/friends fighting to miss this….
Very disappointed not to have Lauzon on the main card. Hopefully he’ll dominate in this one and move his way back up.
Nate Diaz by obscure submission
Clay Guida by KO
Ed Herman by Decision
Houston Alexander by decapitation
no love for the undercard bouts?
i’m from omaha and going tomorrow. houston is going to tear shit up, the civic auditorium will go nuts when he’s fighting.
the combined force from everyone in the audience will make eric shafer’s head explode like in ’scanners’.
Me too. See ya there!
Houston might come out too aggressive and it could be his downfall like in previous ufc losses. Especially since he is in home town(hes gonna be extra pumped and pressured to win). But my prediction is Houston via RAPE CHOKE. I mean choke slam. The rape choke is patented by Wanderlei.
Nate via flying scissor heel hook.
If he doesnt submit Neer. Then he’ll lose by decision. Diaz’s are cursed by UFC judges.
Danzig by whatever he wants. The dudes got skills. Does anyone else think Guida is too small for 155? ( I love him, hes an animal, but I think hes out sized)
Herman should win his fight. You never know though, Belcher has his stints of greatness.
I just hope these fights end quickly so they can squeeze in another 1 or 2 fights into the broadcast.
Houston Alexander disappointed in the first round by being submitted by Eric Schaefer with just 7 SECONDS to go.
WOW 0/4
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA hang your head in shame. How you (and many others thought Alexander was going to win is beyond me. Houston is a prime example of a 1 dimensional fighter. He got lucky vs Jardine and Sakara….well, quite frankly is the work fighter in the UFC who can only beat guys with Octagon jitters
Alexander was totally exposed by Silva and will probably never fight inthe UFC again
Houston by decapitation….pffft good call
