Drum roll please …
Affliction MMA recently “postponed” its encore pay-per-view (PPV) event “Day of Reckoning” — originally scheduled for October 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada — because the promotion had a big announcement to make tonight about the company’s future.
And Vice President Tom Atencio had curious fans buzzing when he revealed that the announcement would be made during the big lightweight professional boxing title fight between Joel Casamayor and Juan Manuel Marquez, which will air on HBO pay-per-view (PPV) live from “Sin City” at 10 p.m. ET.
So what’s all the fuss about?
Affliction has forged a partnership with Golden Boy Promotions — the monster boxing promotional company led by superstar Oscar De La Hoya — to co-promote future events that will feature mixed martial arts and boxing matches, according to ESPN.com.
Here’s a snip:
“Golden Boy and Affliction will partner 50-50 on at least four pay-per-view shows next year that will include boxing matches and MMA fights on the same card. Smaller promoters have paired the two sports on cards, but never at the top level.”
It’s a relationship that was first discussed before Affliction even staged its first-ever event on July 19; therefore, it doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that Golden Boy Promotions is once again back on the MMA radar.
Of course, Affliction also has an existing deal with multimillionaire Donald Trump, meaning that the upstart promotion has added another powerful partner to help it succeed.
And the fearsome threesome will get its first crack at the big time when it trots out the biggest star on the roster, WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, to anchor the MMA portion of the card now set for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on January 17.
No opponent for Emelianenko is known at this time.
This card will not air on HBO, which would have been an industry coup — it is set to air on normal PPV. However, it’s certainly possible that the new format and partnership could likely lead to something down the road.
Stay tuned for more details.

i figured as much. they had something like this last year in vegas i think with pete spratt and it sold out. only problem is the tickets were FREE! this is just a gimmick on Affliction’s part to stay afloat just a little while longer and lose alot more money. WOW! this is changing the face of mma……..for the worse!
sorry, but i’m not replying to your comment.
prediction: OSCAR dela hoya defeats MANNY pacquiao due to TKO in 9th round.
$4500 on OSCAR!!!! chee heee!! GO OSCAR!
its okay. i think thats a safe bet.
Having MMA mix with boxing is like taking a really super-hot girl out for a night on the town but only if her ugly obnoxious older sister came with.
It’s like having to watch a football game where the second and fourth quarters are a hockey period.
It’s like sitting down for an expensive three-course meal where the main course is filet mignon but the appetizer and dessert are unleavened bread.
It’s like paying for an expensive PPV event where one half of the show is mma fights but the other half is boxing matches…oh…wait…oops
its like sharting, you know when you try to fart and something else comes out………..
I would much rather see pro-wrestling and MMA in the same ring. Vince McMahon would have been a better partner. Big mistake by affliction…
What else would go good with MMA?
Pacman all the way!! Go Manny!!
If Manny wins, I will eat a balut egg.
balut tastes good. it just looks gross. haha. i hope manny wins, oscar sucks for not choosing a small guy instead of someone in his own division.
Forget that fight, I got tickets to the fight that MATTERS:
Hopkins vs. Pavlik
So if i buy a Affliction fight i have to watch a boring ass boxing match too now, Sucks.
^I came here to say this^
AMEN DBG, and to think I was actually considering watching Affliction again. They’re betraying hardcore MMA fans by slapping us in the face with some f*cking lame *ss boxing. BOOOOOOOO!!!!!
They’ll likely split the show with one first, followed by the other, and you can order them seperately on PPV, get both for a percentage off…If they really choose not to, they’ll realize they should. They’ll lose sales that way, for sure. MMA fans don’t really want boxing.
“but never at the top level”… like affliction is the top level of mma??? sorry, but no way!!
p.s. boxing sucks!!!!!
I had a feeling Oscar was going to get into the MMA game. There was a video on one of the other blogs where he was talking about Affliction and in his opinion he felt they were promoting and marketing their brand properly or something along those lines. Affliction needs to sign more quality fighters in order to survive. I dont know how much in the hole Trump and Oscar are going to want to go before cutting Attencio off. I’m not sure about Trump, but I know Oscar doesn’t have the pockets that Lorenzo and Frank do.
Ha Maxi, Oscar is ONLY worth about a BILLION $’s. I think it is genius, you will see Oscar (making $25 mil.) and Fedor (making $10 mil.) on the same card. That is awsome. You think people will not pay for that? I think boxing WAS falling apart and this will get the fans that stoped watching, because MMA is much better, to get familier with boxers again. Myself included.Dana must be soiling his shorts over Oscar and Trump.
a $35 million dollar payout? just for those 2 fighters? you know the idea is for them to make money, not lose it. your talking like a $50 million dollar budget after paying the other fighters, advertising, renting the arena etc. they would have to sell like 5 million ppvs to be sucsessfull.
Oscar made $55 mil. just to fight Mayweather. And it sold 2.4 mil. PPV’s, totaling $120 mil…….Look it up.Add MMA to that and they will sell 3 mil PPV’s
the difference is that oscar wont fight on affliction cards. other golden boy signed fighters will. The revenue will be split 50-50 bet goldenboy and affliction so i doubt they would let oscar fight there. THey can get 100% of the revenue if oscar fights on their own card.
Financially speaking, Oscar and the Fertitta’s aren’t even in the same financial universe. This is an example of a downward trending sport (boxing) trying to gain a liferaft from MMA. However, the liferaft itself has holes in it. I do not think that this will be a symbiotic relationship.
I know Oscar has millions but a billion. I dont think he is there yet.
id say oscar is worth about between $150 mil and $200 mil, thats just a guesstimate. thats a big difference between being a billionaire. the fertittas could deal with being 44 mil in the hole and not worry too much, oscar could not. oscar is not used to losing money at all. as soon as he starts to lose a few million with affliction, he’ll jump.
Wrong…
Oscar is no where near a billion dollars in even gross worth.. He might be worth about 100-maybe 200 million tops..
GBP is not entirely owned by Oscar either. He is a majority owner of the corporation, but even that business doesnt have a net worth of 500 million..
This concept is the opposite of “Genius”. Ridiculously Epic Fail.
Oscar + Trump + T-Shirt Guys = Good for MMA???????
Sorry, I’m not buying it. Ever.
This move is far from genius, we’ll see how it all plays out. Word is that HBO is not happy about this at all and has vetoed showing mma on a future card already. If HBO isn’t on board this copromotion has a serious problem doesn’t it? We’ll see how much time this buys Affliction.
True. oscar wanted to put the arlovski/barnett fight on the undecard of a oct 18 boxing match, but hbo declined and isnt having anything to do with Affliction and or mma.
Yeah HBO doesn’t want to “bastardize” boxing with MMA. This is going to be a very lopsided deal for Golden Boy. Outside of free tee shirts, I don’t see what the benefit to them is. I guess De la Hoya just wanted to get his feet wet and doesn’t mind taking a loss for a while.
I found that video with Oscar talking about MMA and Affliction on youtube. Here is the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PODVNxjWSMo
mma better be the main events on these cards they plan on doing….if there trying to better mma.
I’m curious what the future brings now it is going to be tougher for Dana to bring down Affliction now. I think if Affliction can start picking off some talent that the UFC has left behind it can start putting together shows more frequently and maybe then make a run at the UFC. I really don’t know about MMA and Boxing on the same card personally MMA for me is best in a cage.
This proves that Affliction can’t work on its own. A partnership with Golden Boy is a sell out to the hardcore MMA Fan. I am most definatley not a fan of both and that means I am not enduring Boxing to see MMA. I think alot of people are going to feal the same way.
for real! the mma fans are gonna wonder why the boxers arent going for takedowns and the boxing fans are not gonna like the ground aspect of mma. i still like boxing, not nearly as much as mma, and even i dont want to see them combined.
This will not be good for business..
Co-mingling MMA with boxing will drive each diehards of their respective sport into a frenzy. It will seriously lull and or kill the excitement of the cards by alternating each type of fights.. MMA fights are generally quick and paced right. Sometimes boxing events drag on the full 12 rounds and are less than fullfilling to almost every MMA fan. MMA is the new generation of combat sports. Boxing is a little dated and not as fullfilling to MMA fans. Boxing in the same light has it’s base and when you try to step on their toes, by bringing “your” fighters in “thier” ring then you’re seriously looking for a drop in one or the other.. There is a reason that the sports are different. And for that reason, they should be respected individually & left in the state they are..
Agreed, this is a dumb idea and has Trump written all over it. Dana FTW. At least the UFC might become Fedor’s only option which i doubt.
So Afflicition is trying to work aside boxing? that’s a smart move…
These guys are compelete idiots.
One more thing why not include WWE or circus solely into the mix that would really make my day. I probably tape the whole thing and fastforward all the BS
note to writer: trump is a billionaire… not a multi-millionaire. With that said, this looks like a giant mistake… mma and boxing in one event… hmmmmm… not toooo sure about that. I think it’s a looser.
agree I don’t get this…….. I guess this is what you get when people have no clue about mma are in charge. I don’t want to bash boxing but that not what I wanna watch.
Correction..
Trump is not a billionare.. His individual “net” worth is est. about 250 million..
Trump Enterprises is not a sole proprietorship. It’s a Comporation headed by a board of trustee’s. Trump himself doesnt even have half a million in his bank account.
He lends his name “for a fee” to look successful. It’s a matter of smoke and mirrors for the uneducated. He is a failed businessman more times over than he is successful. He has basically been living off the name his father built. Most people dont know that Donald Trump lost almost his entire famiy fortune on bad investments. He was able to live on credit with banks and investors. It’s not “his” money.. it’s “theirs”
exactly. trump doesnt have to risk anything.
NIce catch, I was thinking the same thing. He does put on the “auora” of a billionare, but Bill Gates he ain’t. (not that he’s eating baloney sandwiches or anything)
Oh yeah, and MMA and Boxing? NO WAY, am I paying for a PPV and have to watch boxing. Never!
What?!? No government cheese for the Donald?
well, i’m not the guys banker or anything… but i did read it in FORBES MAGAZINE… they do a pretty good job… they had him at 3 billion… but said it could be as much as 6 or 7 due to his company being private… whatever that means… i think he can “hide” more money… anyway, i could remember it wrong but i’m pretty sure the guy is a billionaire…
but… i could be wrong… this is dead… not sure why i’m writing this… i wish i had his money… billion or million…
What this means is that the “company” as a whole is worth that amount if you were to break it down and liquidate it’s assets.
The Trump Organization isn’t owned entirely by Trump himself. It’s owned by a board of shareholders. Trump is probably the CEO and majority share holder, but not the sole proprietor of said holdings. But everyone knows you’re worth more in assets than you are in physical cash..
Here is an interesting article on Mr. Trump for the uneducated:
http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2008/09/17/overrated-donald-trump/
So alot of it is smoke and mirrors…
So lame. Basically taking MMA fights away from what buys they would have. Is boxing popular enough that people will be willing to only get a couple of boxing matches in and vice versa. The addition of boxing and the fact that they’ll take MMA matches away to fit ‘em in makes this a miss fer me.
I don’t like what this means, for MMA in the short term. I like the sports as completely separate. However, I do think Affliction is a great addition to MMA, and their long term success, even if it requires crossover events, is something I’d like to see. They’re clearly the org. that scares the UFC the most, and I love what’s happened to the s[port since Affliction entered the market.
Agree that Affliction has helped the sport, but…I doubt the UFC management is “scared” of any other promotion, at this point anyway.
I don’t think it will work. I would say most people like 1 sport or the other - not both. That is not a fact, just the sense that I get from speaking to people. If that is true, now you have a product that really does not appeal to anyone. Do you want to drop $45,when you are not interested in 1/2 of the card. We shall see…will be interesting.
I don’t like it. I don’t want to have to fall asleep through a boxing match just to have someone wake me up for the MMA fight. Doesn’t matter how much money you have backing you, if your product sucks it sucks and a person will be only willing to lose so much money. When you have to turn to somewhat of a gimmick approach (i.e. adding boxing, bands, etc…), you’ve already lost.
The first shoe has fallen for Affliction. I think it gives the impression that MMA can’t stand on its own. Of course Atencio and UFC haters will say that this is the greatest thing ever and that the UFC is doomed blah, blah, blah…..
I think it’s abundantly clear to anyone paying attention that MMA can stand up on its own.
Boxing is so boring next to MMA. This is obviously just an experiment by Golden Boy Promotions. I used to be a big boxing fan. It’s like computers. When they first came out you didn’t notice how slow they were and you thought that the early ones were great. Now if your computer is acting slow it drives you crazy (today’s boxing). Who wants to sit through forty five minutes of generic boxing between MMA fights? I can’t remember the last “exciting” fight that I’ve seen. BTW, Trump has absolutely no equity in Affliction - he is a paid spokesperson. This move makes Affliction look weak and unstable. R.I.P. Affliction.
good comparison. i grew up in the 80s and my 1rst video game was pong. i then got atari with pitfall and thought it was the $hit. now i dont even play video games, but the difference is astronomical. i also grew up loving boxing in 1 of its golden eras (with leonard, hearns, hagler and duran) b/c thats all there was and they were great fighters. then mma came along and i was like “to hell with boxing, this mma $hit rules”. there are still some good boxing matches (mainly between the lighter weight mexican fighters) but compared with a great highly skilled mma match, boxing IS boring. it doent make any since to combine the 2 unless out of desperation. goldenboy was already affliated with affliction once and dropped out, and i dont see them sticking together for long again. i think oscar (who i respect) is just trying to jump on the mma bandwagon, but will soon find out that mma isnt as easy the ufc seems to make it. like i said before, if you plan on running a mma org. it better be the only thing you do if you wanna be sucsessful like the ufc and to a lesser extent strikeforce. there was a rumor going around that mike tyson might sign with elite, so they might be going for the same angle. kimbo vs tyson in a boxing match. talk about a freakshow.
It really is sad. Boxing is awful. This is certainly not good for the sport of MMA. The best that can come of this is a very short term partnership that helps Affliction keep MMA an exciting and competitive industry.
Also, Muscle Dolphin, I think Trump owns a considerable portion of the Affliction company. Hence his son working many hours for Affliction.
i would double check your facts with trump being a paid spokesman cause his son made it pretty clear in an interview they have a stake in this thing.
You know…no matter how much YOU guys bash boxing…it still has a huge following. I know MMA fans think they are the only sports fans in the world, and that everyone else sucks, but get your heads out of your asses.
Affliction has done what ANY MMA organization out there would like to do, in a very short period of time…including the UFC…
1. Immediate promotional opportunities.
2. Expanded audience.
3. Biggest name in combat sports (Goldenboy)
4. Chance to reel in hispanic fight fans…(that the UFC can’t seem to win over)
It’s easy to say “they couldn’t do it by themselves…blah, blah, blah”…..but that is a moot point, because now they don’t have to.
Good deal for Affliction…and just plain, smart business.
Swing away, UFC nutthuggers.
CBS is a way more successful entity than Golden Boy Promotions. Elite XC’s alignment with CBS may in fact be it’s downfall. The only financial success that Golden Boy has is when Oscar himself is fighting. Successful operations don’t “hybrid” their product and give up control. Business moves made out of desperation are not usually fruitfull. Desperate and most likely fatal move by Affliction. Four hybrid fight cards a year is not enough to build a stable following. Mark Cuban is somewhat more intelligent and successful than Oscar and he passed on aligning himself with Affliction. What does that tell you? I do agreee though that it may increase some interest with Hispanic boxing fans which could be a boon for the WEC.
Furthermore, I believe that Bernard Hopkins is a minority partner in Golden Boy Promotions and he is on record as dissing MMA. Affliction has “sold out”.
hopkins is as well as shane mosley and barerra. Goldenboy is not the biggest name in combat sports, not even close. Zuffa is #1 and the WWE (if you consider that a combat sport) is 2nd with boxing as a whole a distant 3rd. goldenboy productions is only a part of boxing so i dont even know where it ranks. youre right, unless oscar is fighting, its no big deal. boxing is not dead, it is still striving overseas, but is dying out slowly in the u.s. and that is just being realistic. when i 1rst brought this a a few days ago, even the most anti-ufc, Affliction nuthuggers hated the idea.
Introvert, What are you talking about. Golden boy promotions is hardly the right partenership to be seeking.
1.Imidiate diluted product
2.Expanded Audience? I think there are more hardcore Boxing Fans or Hardcore MMA fans than there are fans who like both MMA and Boxing.
3.Bigest Name in combat sports? Goldenboy doesn’t mean shit in the MMA world.
4. you better go make some research on that one ufc has a pretty good grip on Hispanic fight fans, you said it your self Affliction has a CHANCE to gain Hspanic fight fans. Would you runin your corporate culture and profile for a chance?
If this show happens it will be Affliction’s last, golden boy has also been a prat of failed business ventures in the past.
By the way I don’t hug nuts, no matter who’s they are.
I don’t think this will work very well at all, but I’d rather see a boxing match than an Ozzy Osbourne concert.
So if that is what they are taking out, then I am all for it.
I wrote a post on why I think this is pure stupidity.
MIDDLE AGE!! I know I’m getting old but it’s sad to be characterized as middle age (I’m also 37).
lol. me too. i dont feel middle- aged. i feel the same as i did when i was 21, just a little wiser.
This is just plain dumb. Affliction can’t make a successful run at just mma so now they do this…. just roll over and die …. this will be crap.
during the tuf marathon dana is talking about tuf 8 and says they have the next silva but he said he was 22 years old but in an intervie with yahoo he said he was 24 so the winner will be one of the fighters listed below
1.my pic Efrain Escudero 22yrs 10-0 7 straight submission wins
2.junie browning 2-0 22 yrs
3.shane nelson 11-3 24 yrs trained by bj penn
4.joe dautre 2-0 24yrs walks around at 180-195lbs he cuts alot of weight
i am not interested in boxing at all and would not pay to see live nor pay per view boxing fights
i do not watch boxing because it is garbage. looks like ol Tom had to call on the golden boy because he aint to good at this whole “checks and balances” thing.
I watch boxing because i love it, and it’s deff my favourite part in MMA..
LOL love all the hate because they are brining me and alot of fans what they want to see. I still watch boxing and will continue as long as their are superstars like PAc-man HAtton Calzage(spelled wrong) and Pavlik. They always are exciting fights better then vast majority of mma fights. So if you put some great boxing matches+great mma matches everyone should love it. Also this will move more people to watch MMA and open their eyes to the fact that this is not a ‘brutal’ sport. So this HELPS mma and helps Affliction which is freaken awesome get to watch Fedor continue to fight the best in the world instead of being stuck in the crap ufc fighting a bunch of cans.
Ya…kind of funny that “striking” is the most well liked part of MMA…but the same guys who like MMA “striking” say that “boxing” sucks. Get over yourselves MMA fanboys…”boxing” owns inferior MMA “striking”.
I also think it’s funny that you forget about elbows and knees are considered “strikes”. I’m a fan of both, but it’s cricket vs, baseball…crochet vs. golf….ping pong vs. tennis, it has its place. Maybe that’s why the style of boxing is not listed as a martial art.
The good news is that Jose Canseco might be the next IBF champion since boxing’s running out of big name fighters that people care about. The only one worth a SH#t is Manny Pacquiao. I know your either Attencio or DelaHoya trying to hype yourself up on an MMA blog, but save your breath.
Do they want us to fall asleep? Boxing is boring. What a mistake.
Great for MMA people
I think it might work out for both parties involved, if they usee the un-televised card as boxing matchs and then do the live matches mma and vice versa why not. Remember AA and Anderson Silva said they would both like to try boxing, I bet some haters of boxing would pay to watch those two get into the ring and like both venues.
The next big announcement for Affliction will be a joint venture with the WWE and a mixed match with Pedro Izzo vs. “Hacksaw” Jim Dugan……this is why I don’t take Tom Attencio seriously. It’s alot of the same lip service where they think MMA fans are stupid. I know they don’t want us to think that they’re struggling financially…so I won’t think much when they cross-promote with the local bingo parlor for their next event.
if the ufc announced that they were going to have mma/boxing mixed events, every person on this thread in favor of Affliction/boxing would be all over and denounce the ufc. so would i.
It looks like Introvert is the boxing nuthugger that still thinks Ray Mercer should have beat a half-assed Kimbo Slice. Boxing has no room in MMA unless they’re willing to do more that jab, hook and clinch. There’s room for everything, but this shows you exactly where Affliction is financially. By the way Attencio, I haven’t seen Trump next to you for a long time….maybe he’s out scalping tickets for your next event….sellout.
I watch MMA, K1 and boxing. You get exciting matches and boring matches in all. There are some guys who just like to watch MMA to see two guys rolling around on top of each other. If this is the case, then I can understand why you would be dissapointed in K1 and boxing.
I like K1 and MMA obviousy, but boxing is Crap and it because of the way it has been promoted in the last two decades.
haha dana has to be laughing his ass off.
i dont order boxing becasue i dont care for it. its boring.
im really never going to order an affliction card now knowing that I MUST watch boxing.
what a dumb move. this guy really is an idiot and “t-shirt” guy.
I want to see what Dana/UFC’s reply to this is. Also, the marketing for their next events and eventual counter-programming of this will be great..
UFC, MMA without boxing matches
UFC, we leave lame boxing to gimmick organizations
UFC, if you wanted to pay for boxing you’d pay for boxing
There has to be better ones I’m just a big tired right now. You got any others?
everybody’s talking down about boxing.but boxing has the money and the global reach…mma is only big in the u.s… common.. de la hoya got a total of 80 million…with mayweather…and chuck lidell gets 250T… where did they get the money..its world wide event wherein each country pays to watch boxing fights… and boxing is in the olympics.. mma is only big because dana white talks like a freaking prophet hahaha
read the comment of attencio and he said” everything they would do with co promotion is all up to golden boy..so who’s the bigger fish..golden boy…they have 3 deals—1.t shirts at golden boy events(favors golden boy) 2. official ring magazine tshirt provider(favors golden boy—no tshirt cmpany in boxing has afflictions reach)3. co promotion of events boxing/mma(favors both—but attentcio says its up to golden boy–so 60%favors golden boy)…now oscar has the latino market.the women market and the old white market watch his boxing shows(2.4 million record ppv— and he’s only a middle weight) so he wants to get the young caucasian market as well.. so hell just use mma
