The Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 88: “Breakthrough,” which took place on Saturday, September 6 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta.
Unsurprisingly, former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell received the stiffest medical sentence, getting suspended for 60 days after his crushing loss to Rashad Evans in the main event of the evening.
Thiago Tavares, too, appears to be a little worse for the wear after his war with Kurt Pellegrino, which also earned him 60 days on the sidelines.
Other notables on the report include Rich Franklin for the grizzly “flap” gash over his right eye and his opponent, Matt Hamill.
Here’s the complete list of UFC 88 injuries and their medical instructions:
Chuck Liddell –- “The Iceman” has been suspended for 60 days and is required to have an MRI or CT scan after sustaining a brain-jarring knockout.
Rich Franklin -– “Ace” is suspended for 60 days because of a serious laceration above his right eye.
Matt Hamill -– “The Hammer” is suspended for 30 days after being on the receiving end of a technical knockout.
Martin Kampmann -– “The Hitman” is suspended 30 days after being on the wrong end of a ferocious technical knockout.
Matt Brown -– “The Immortal” is suspended for 15 days because of a facial cut.
Thiago Tavares -– The Brazilian is suspended for 60 days and will have to undergo a CT scan to determine whether or not he sustained any nasal or facial fractures.
Michael Patt -– The UFC newcomer is suspended for 42 days because of a nasal fracture and is required to undergo a CT scan.
Ryo Chonan -– “The Piranha” is suspended for 42 days because of a serious laceration near his right eye.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

“a brain-jarring knockout”…yikes! In the slow-mo it looked like the repercussions went down his entire spine.
I just can’t get the image out of my head. I guess because I am sad for Chuck (my favorite fighter). I even had a dream where I was talking to him and asking him if he was okay… God, that makes me sound crazy. Oh well…
I’m w/ you BNF. It sucks to see Chuck go out like that. Dude has been the most entertaining KO artist for a long time, and it’s sad to see him on the decline.
BNF, Thats why I havent talked about it, and just skipped over the Rashad threads! Im still sick to my stomach about it. F*cken b*tch a$$ Rashad, boring a$$ fighter and he finally does something worth watching. Too bad it was Chuck on the other end.
Too bad Chuck’s head was almost decapitated. His medical report should be somethin like this:
“Chuck Liddell: suspended for 60 days for near decapitation”
It reminds me all too much when Crocop got a taste of his own medicine; it’s just not supposed to happen that way, very sad.
Rashad almost decapitated Chuck. I had no idea Rashad had that in him. That wasnt just a well timed, perfectly placed punch….that thing had some serious POWER behind it. I always thought that Rashad needed to let the hands fly more often and if he keeps opening up like this, we may get some exciting performances out of Ol’ Suga!
The thing with Shad is I actually like him outside of the cage. He is a cool dude, seems down to earth and intelligent.
In the cage, I cant stand him with all that dancing around because to often he dances when he isnt doing anything special. But if he is going to start hitting people they way he hit Chuck, he can enter dancing with the stars for all I care.
I will never forget his wife Screaming at the top of her lungs: “I’m Rich B*Tch!”
all that dancing around and showboating sucks, but you could tell it frustrated chuck and made him go out of his fight plan and caused him to be the agressor when he is naturally a counterstriker. i think rashad has finaly figured out what he can and can’t do in the cage, along with greg jackson’s mind, and imo that makes him a very dangerous individual to any lhw. rogan said that rashad could probably make mw and i wouldnt doubt it. he would be even scarier at 185.
I have to disagree, I think Chuck’s plan was to pressure Rashad the entire time. He even said it in his pre fight interview…”I’m going to come after him in this fight, im not gonna let him eek out another win hes gonna have to earn it..” or something like that. He knew Rashad was tenative in all his fights at least in the first round for sure. He probably didnt respect his punching power because no one knew it was really that great, although, that was a damn good hit so not sure if it is as much punching power as it was “on the buton” but either way I think Chuck lost because he didnt play the counter punching role yet again.
chuck WAS frustrated, i could see it in his eyes. he probably didnt respect his punching power (who did?) but was probably thinking about getting taken down. yes chuck did lose becuase be cause he didnt play the counterpunching game. every video interview i saw with chuck, he said that he was gonna wait for rashad to come to him, like a wrestler who relys on gnp usally does, but rashad fought a completly different fight than he normally does. chuck never comes into a fight to be the aggresor, but rashad made chuck chase him around and got caught.
The knockout reminded me of crocop falling down on canvas after gonzaga’s head kick
You JOhn your funny man.. ” IM RICH BITCH!!! “.. hehehehehehe
It’s crazy how Chuck is in arguably 7 of the top 15 UFC KO’s of all time.
Wins:
Chuck vs. Babalu I
Chuck vs. Randy II and III
Chuck vs. Tito I
Chuck vs. Tiger White
Losses:
Chuck vs. Rampage II
Chucks vs. Rashad
It’s not that Chuck’s KO’s are necesarily the all among the best KO’s,, it’s because it’s against high profile fighters or KO’s in championship bouts which makes them very memorable.
The biggest payday and the longest medical suspension! Ouch!
chucks face got wider after that ko it was disgusting!
the close-up shot of him receiving medical attention while he was laying on the ground is the worst I’ve ever seen Chuck look. I couldn’t believe how swollen his face looked.
In regards to Franklin, has ever shown up for a fight and not looked like he just fought the day before? I swear he has a beat up face before every one of his fights.
True! I’ve been wondering if he has a permanent black eye, or if he had one tattoed on him. lol
Rashad definately gave Chuck the worst KO of his life I’ll bet….
Remember the good ol days when the champs were: Chuck HW, Franklin MW, and Hughs WW. The KINGS have all been dethroned over and over. Now HW is a joke, Silva’s an unbeatable freak of nature at MW, GSP is a crazy powerhouse WW, and now we have BJ Penn unbeatable at LW. Joe Silva needs some help putting together some match ups that will fire the sport up, because they can’t count on hitting the lotto 3X’s with fights like Rashad/Chuck and Serra/GSP. I wish the UFC would merge/mix with WEC to get to a new level. WEC fights are always good.
I remember those days! Good times, but it all comes to an end sooner or later. After a few years you will have some new talent, younger, and stronger. And the champs we know today will be trying to hang with the younger ones. Its the circle of life!
can you imagine someone giving a run for their money against the Spider or Fedor? It’s not going to be anytime soon but it’ll definitely happen someday in the future. I just can’t picture it happening though LOL, but it will. Everything that goes up must come down… HARD!
I’m waiting for the day I see Anderson laying on his back, dazed look up at the lights. This site would explode if that happens.
Haha, I like that, “Circle of life”…As the Silverchair song goes, “out with the old, in with the new”…A couple of years from now, the top tier fighters of today would be washed up[check out MAtt Hughes].
Negation, gonna have to deduct points from your “mancard” for the Silverchair reference! lol
