chuck liddel ko by rashad evans at ufc 88

“Who would have expected that? And Chuck is still out!”

– UFC commentator Joe Rogan comments on the unbelievable result at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” tonight when Rashad Evans iced Chuck Liddell with an absolutely devastating overhand right to knockout the former light heavyweight champion. And he was out for a very long time. Wow … stunning. Seriously fucking stunning.

Why is it stunning? Chuck drops his left when he throws his right. Rampage caught him and now Rashad caught him. It’s the scouting report on Chuck and anytime he fights a puncher they will be looking for that.

someone said to me that chucks never gonna win the title again, but i thought it was to early to tell when he said that. but it’s always the same thing with him, like bill said everyone knows what he’s gonna do cause he seems to do the same freaking thing every time he fights. i just don’t see him getting back to the top again.

MMA WAS JUST ON ESPN’S TICKER AT THE BOTTOM. it may not sound big,but that was the 1rst time id ever seen it. they showed rashad over chuck, franklin over hamil and hendo over palhares and used sherdawgs rankings. it shows that mma has arrived!

Bill Chuchk has been doing that for years but its only been the past year that he has lost by dropping his left, so thats not the reason.

There are 2 reasons why he is losing which is the same for Hughes.

1. He had become so good at striking that he stopped using or developing other weapons (like Hughes did with wrestling).

2. The fear is no longer in his opponents everyone knows he can be beat.

Number 2 is the main reason in my opinion, Hughes and Lidell seemed invincible even in the mind of their opponents, now that has changed it a whole different ball game

Boxers will exploit that sutff! Rashad was so quick and had the perfect gameplan by dancing with his goofy style and luring chuck in. I am a huge fan and I feel the same way. Also, like c-war said, that was really the only major offensive move that Rashad made the whole fight. He never did a thing in round 1.

I think Chuck may have used up all he had left in his fight with Wandy. He seemed to revert right back to the same style he used against Jardine, just looking for the knock out punch, and didn’t think that Rashad could hurt him. Why else would he lead with an uppercut?

Rashad will earn his 1st loss soon, trust me. His showboating should be toned down a notch or two. No fu**in’ respect. When Chuck went down, he did a reaction that seemed to say, “Well I don’t know what happend”, and did a gasping-like gesture while stepping backwards. I mean, WTF was that all about?!?

Liddells had a great career (and I’m a big fan) but let’s face it…what young hungry guy can he beat? He won’t earn another title shot. He should either retire or take a fight with someone like Rich Franklin which would be a nice fight for the fans.Like I sai, I’m a Chuck fan and I love watching him fight…but I don’t want to see him get punished like that again. He’s had a great career and he should retire. I counter Rashad out in this one and I was wrong. Shows again that Liddell’s philosophy of being willing to take one to give one just doesn’t cut it since the sport and it’s fighters have evolved so much. Thanks for the memories and all the great fights Iceman.

He won’t EARN another title shot, but that doesn’t mean he won’t get one with a win over somebody on the fringes of the top 10. He’ll still sell a lot of PPVs with a title fight, and that trumps less known fighters (Machida) who should be in front of him.

That WAS a very good shot. I also think Rich Franklin’s left to the jaw of Nate “Rock” Quarry deserves to be mentioned in that discussion. Quarry dropped like a stone statue being pushed over where he proceded to shake on the ground in an almost seizure-like state. Rashad might have possibly topped it.

QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS:

In your opinion, what WOULD be the biggest upset in UFC history?

GSP – SERRA I (GSP was an enormous favorite, nobody was giving Serra a chance)
SILVA – COTE (Assuming that Cote manages to win)

I’m just wondering because this seems like the biggest 1 sided fight we’ve seen in a while. I’m actually one of the few to give Cote a chance in this. I mean, if you just go out there and throw huge bombs, you are at least giving yourself a small chance to win; and I think Cote will be looking to throw some.

The lesson of underestimation doesn’t really stick with me[even if it's one of the deadliest mistakes to make when sizin' up someone]. IMO, Chuck underestimated Rashad’s stand-up, BIGTIME!!

UFC 88

Franklin looked sharp; Hamill had a bad fight strategy by will be scary after learns how to fight on his feet and check leg kicks. He’s like the kid in the schoolyard that everyone beats up on but can never really hurt…

Henderson was too tentative but in his defense he didn’t know what he was dealing with. His sprawls are world class however his best moments were during the last 10 seconds of the third round. He needs to learn how to kick to be competitive but at 38 his time is running out.

Evans looked alright but I Chuck’s best days are behind him. He is a devastating one dimensional stiker when he catches you but his technical fighting is not the best. He looks like the Chuck who fought Rampage and Jardine, not the same as when he fought Silva. He made the same mistake tonight that he made against Rampage – throwing a punch / jab without keeping his other hand up. Rashad hit him with a punch that was telegraphed and probably would not have had anywhere close to the effect it did if Chuck had his hand up. MMA is evolving every day and the days of the stand up one punch fighters are disappearing. Chuck may be done after this….

Evans is gonna have big problems with technical all around fighters like Forrest and W. Silva and will be destroyed by guys like Machida and Thiago Silva.

If Chuck had been training with Greg Jackson he would have taught him to not fight like Tank Abbott.

It is a shame to see Chuck lieing face down on the canvas, but it is a sign of the times. MMA has evolved, now a wrestling has a striking game, now a striker has a sprawl. Chuck unfortuanately has not developed the defensive technique for a stand up fight. He can trade blows, but he can’t duck and move in the pocket, or be the more patient fighter and wait for his opportunity.

His fame is a gift and a curse, he probably almost feels compelled to be the one pushing the action and be the person that is the dominant fighter. I think the result of this is that if someone just out waits him and forces him to play into their pocket and into their striking game, it leaves him open to haymakers.

But leading with an uppercut was amateur mistake, like leading with a left hook to the body like he did against Rampage. He needs to correct these mistakes, it’s not the end of his career, but hopefully it’s the end of his striking coach.

EXACTLY! I never counted out Rashad either (look at my previous posts if you must haha) but yeah I don’t think anyone expected such a brutal knockout man.

Me Too. I had the same feeling before Franklin/Silva 1 were no one expected Silva to KO him. and for my two cents on everything…

Rashad has the best head movement in MMA. He rolled with every punch Chuck landed and immediately got out of the way. He is not overrated, just unimpressive at times. He’s an awkward striker who has and will continue to prove frustrating to many fighters.

Chuck needs to leave Hack and just be in a new gym. Hack is great but he can’t teach chuck anything new. With that being said Chuck still has many more fights in him if he wants it. He needs to stop looking for the one punch and try to develop different gameplans (which a new trainer will help)

Get ready for TUF1 Champ vs. TUF2 Champ for the Light Heavyweight title. Now that is marketability.

I agree rashad exhibited good head movement and evasiveness. He’s good at not getting hit. I mean, hes never been knocked out… never been defeated. It doesn’t matter who you were fighting, if you are undefeated that means something.

Thank you Rashad.

The evolution of MMA has begun.

And you suck at boxing yourself.

Just think what this sport will look like in 10 years.

Just re-watched the fight, Chuck was crazy going in with his hands so low, and then trying to get an uppercut in. I’m sorry, but that shows that he’s way too over-confident and not training well enough. He may rebound with better training and a more overall approach to fighting, but my guess is that his days are completely over.

I am a massive fan and feel terrible saying this….Chuck “was” great! And we shouldn’t take that away from his legacy. But, for far too long, ever since UFC 66 and his beatdown of Tito, he has become boring, predictable, and slower. My god he’s 38-9 and gotten so slow and older over a year since Rampage put him out. He has no explosion anymore.
CHuck should honestly hang em up. It doesn’t matter what he does, its gonna be like Tyson. Hes been figured out. He was phenomenal. But the gameplan has been set for figuring him out. Seriously, Rashad is not even that good…I mean life and death w/ Tito(!?) and Bisping(!) this is like the twilight zone! Top that off by losing to Jardine! it just shows Chuck’s time is up.

Franklin will probably get Wandy. And Wandy has the fork stuck in him too! Too many hard wars, and beating the chinless Jardine doesn’t mean much. Actually, Jardine is an anomaly, talented, not too much support, and that Achilles heel that is the weakest chin in the sport.

Speaking of Randy, Randy is great, all time maybe. But after watching him pick up & dump Gonzaga a year ago, no doubt that hes cycling something, I mean a 44-45 yr old man does not keep strength or skill like that regardless of what his supporters say.

Chuck losing to Rashad is like the New England Patriots losing to a high school team, unbeliavable! Chuck is a fool for believing is Hackleman too much. I hope Hendo keeps pushing strong, I hate it how once a Great starts losing and hitting the down side of 30, like past 35, people start rapidly writing him off. WAR HENDO!

I thought that Rashad was going to win that too. Well….I thought that it was possible. I told everyone not to count out Rashad. I don’t know if it was because Chuck underestimated him, Chuck is getting older, or because of his injury, or because Rashad is just that good. But regardless, that was upsetting for me to see.

Most at the party were rooting for Rashad but when Chuck went down like that were like, woah! It’a almost sad to see such a proud and popular fighter go out like this. It reminds me of football greats who don’t know when to call their career a wrap.

I’m not gonna lie, I was really upset by it. Not to take anything away from Rashad because I am a fan of his, but that was just strange to see Chuck like that. I usually am jumping around yelling when there is a knockout, but while everyone around me was screaming (people that are just now getting familiar with MMA) I just sat there in disbelief.

I got my picks well & truely wrong!! Chuck getting KTFO wasn’t something I saw coming, especially from Rashad but credit where its due, it was a real sweet shot. Had to laugh at Goldberg when he kept saying “if Chuck had landed his punch…”, it hit Rashads armpit!!

Game plans came into affect last night, Hammil didn’t seem to have one, he should have been shooting a lot more on Franklin, I think he was too weary of catching a knee on the way in. Hendo was good against Palhares but apart from the kick & shoot he didnt have an answer to Hendos right hand.

IMO Brown got robbed but if he couldnt finish a tired Stun Gun then the judges can do that to you. Setanta cut the end of the Lambert-McDonald fight so didnt see the sub.

Not a bad card all in all.

Hammill is deaf, I didn’t know he was Retraded as well… he keeps wanting to stand and he’s been getting away with it, until now, when he fights a guy that has really good standup.

Hammill is a Ground N’ Pounder and he hasn’t accepted that about himself yet… and it cost him big time in a lopsided defeat.

Chuck is doing a Muhammud Ali and not knowing when to retire and getting destroyed his last few fights. He had a great reign as champ, but no one can be champ forever. Time to let the younger guys have their moment.

there was no luck or anything to it, his eyes went wide we he seen the opening he had and he took it, and all of you people say that rashad did nothing in the first round. somebody tell me what chuck did in the first round besides stalk him and not throw anyhthing. i have always been a rashad fan, and will be laughing at all the doubters like i always do when he wins the title

It was a matter of time Chuck’s Guard is way open his left hand way down and Rashad timed it perfect, but Chuck’s left hand uppercut had bad intentions as well, but Rashad’s punch hit first. Shocking hopefully Chuck does not become like Matt Hughes then again alot of these guys are from the one dimensional era plus they are older.
