WEC 36: “Faber vs. Brown”, which is taking place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, was scheduled for next Wednesday September 10, but has been moved to November 5 because of the expected arrival of hurricane “Ike” sometime early next week.
“Ike” is expected to be this year’s most devastating hurricane and is on course to drill south Florida like its name is Tina. At its peak so far “Ike” has already been labeled a category 4 storm, comprising winds reaching 145-150 miles per hour.
The Zuffa-based mixed martial arts organization is taking no chances having either their fans or fighters caught up in this massive natural disaster, and they made the decision yesterday.
Here’s a snip from WEC Vice President of Operations and Production Peter Dropick:
“Due to the potential of a major hurricane hitting the South Florida area on Wednesday we were compelled to postpone the event. For the safety of our fans, the fighters and our staff we felt it was in the best interest to make this decision.”
Delaying what appears to be one of the best cards ever assembled by the WEC for two months means we’ll not only have to wait that much longer, but it could affect the athletes in their preparation.
Most fighters like to schedule their training camps so they peak physically just before fight time. With us already being less than a week away from the original scheduled date, it’s safe to say most of these guys have backed off the hardcore training and are close to their peak.
Now they’ll have to hit the gym for another seven weeks or so, which could lead to over training or possibly even some injuries. Let’s hope the latter doesn’t happen, because like I said, this card is stacked. Nobody wants to see any of these fights get canceled.
Damn you, “Ike.”

“drill south Florida like it’s name was Tina. ”
haha its gonna hit Florida like an iron chair.
Absolutely hysterical.
That sucks, but i guess you gotta do watcha gotta do.
They are actually projecting Ike to go just under the Florida peninsula then into the Gulf. Sucks to be the gulf states.
F U Mother Nature!!!
huricane after huricane now u know their is something wrong with the world!!!
this sucks, i was really looking forward to wednsday. why push it all the way up to nov. i think they would have just changed states and venues. they must be relly wanting to have a wec show in fla.
I live in South Florida, and it does suck to have to deal with these things. However, I am also the Vice President of a commecial contracting firm (www.allstarrestoration.com) that specializes in restoring storm damaged churches. So, it does keep us busy. It’s kind of like selling caskets, you never want anything bad to happen, but yet, that’s how we make a living. Like death, we dont control the weather either, so I guess somebody has to put things back together. I do think they moved the event too fast though. I don’t think It’s going to affect Hollywood, FL all that much.
Great now I have to wait even longer to see the Philio v. Sonnen fight.
they should put this fight on ufc’s oct card. dana has already stated that they are cutting out the lhw and mw division in the wec and move most of them to the ufc so why not?. this fight could help make up for the loss of machida/silva and it might be hard to find a replacement for silva, so its possible that machida could not fight at all in this event.
yea makes since to me.
b.w. sounds like you have it nailed there, I’d love to see that in the octagon. Though I doubt the WEC will let go of that money making fight. I was surprised at the lack of ads for the Sept. 10th event so this gives them more time to build hype at least, but it must be murder on the fighters. Talk about getting the rug pulled out from under you.
there i was so much going on with the whole brock/randy thing and the ppv tonight, that alot forgot this was coming so soon, and the wec always puts on a good show. i think they could move sonnen/fihlo 2 to the ufc and still get good ratings and sell alot of tickets along as faber is fighting. that kid is as good as gold. by nov they should have condit fighting again and add that to faber/brown. maybee condit/miura 2. that was a hell of a fight.
