paulo filho

“Definitely no. We’re close friends and I believe there’s space for everybody there, it’s definitely out of my plans.”

– Undefeated WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho denies the recent rumors via Tatame.com that the UFC is working on a plan to match him against its champion — Anderson Silva — to find out who the best middleweight in the world really is. Apparently Filho has no desire to face his countryman and good friend, saying emphatically that the super fight is not going to happen. He had also at one time turned down a request from Chuck Liddell to help with preparation for his fight with Wanderlei Silva last December, stating he would not help an American train for a fight against a Brazilian. It would be awesome to see Silva and Filho fight, but it looks like that’s a long shot to ever happen.

I don’t think they need to fight for us to agree that Silva is the best MW in the world.

He needs a convincing win over Sonnen before I’m convinced he’s even the best MW in WEC.

Yes, this fight is a long shot to ever happen. But do you know what is an even longer long shot??? Paulo’s chances of beating Anderson if the fight ever did happen.

Silva would straight smash this dude. That’s why he won’t fight him. No one’s close to Silva at middle weight.

Silva is a living legend. Friend or no friend- Filho would get slaughtered. And lets face it- for the right price he’d do it. There is a huge difference between WEC money and UFC money.

No shot. Too much sense of loyalty in Brazil — same reason why Silva bumped up to 205 to fight Irvin, but refused to contend for the title, bc he didn’t want to interfere with Machida’s run to top 205

Why are brazilians like that? Imagine how weird it would seem if Liddell refused to fight Rashad because they are both americans. It’s just a competition.

Its because Brazilians are way more proud than Americans, and even the Japanese…. they’ll fight if the price is right (anyone would) but usually they don’t like to fight a fellow brizilian..

Its not that he doest want to fight machida couse there both brazillian its because they both train together and machida is on his way to a title shot so silva like a good friend is letting have his shot at a title.

I hate this nationalistic crap. Close friend, i could understand (Shogun-Wanderlei), but not helping someone train because hes fighting someone from the same country as you??? Please. Imagine if fighters from the U.S had that mentality. I think its completely unprofessional.

Anderson Silva is an amazing Champ.. woah how lucky are we all to witness such greatness.. Filho has not looked as impress as of yet here in WEC as he was in Japan. There are alot of match ups that can be intresting for Filho.. as now and tomorrow if there was fantasy or real fight between the Legend Anderson vs Filho. 1 body bag for Filho please…

A lot of people were riding Filho for this comment. If he doesn’t want to fight AS, hey, more power to him. He doesn’t have to fight Silva if he doesn’t want to. But it does present and interesting problem if he were to become the #1 contender in the UFC. What to do?

“How can she smack! How can she smack!!” Funny stuff.

Personally I think the Brazilians all look out for each other when they know who would whoop who. AS would destroy Machida IMO, as well as Filho.

However, I don’t think this was the case in the Chuck situation – he just didnt want to train someone who was fighting his boy. Don’t blame him.

Man..but money should been a litte bit more wiser.. 1. She is a woman.. unless it was Cyborg or Carano and company.. then put your guard up.. and defend yourself.. he is a dude.. I’m sure his smack which he did not hold back on hurt more then hers..

2. He is on HER show.. all her peeps are in the studio.. shit her brother, cousin, boyfriend or husband could of been up in the studio.. what if that was your girl that smacked like that in front of you.. DRAMA OCCURS!!

3. He asked for it.. I don’t feel bad for him.. and someone got to put a muzzle on the host too.

I think they both deserved it lol, I’m not a fan of a man hitting a woman, but she shouldn’t have slapped him in the first place, she is the professional and should have kept her cool. Did you see how she kept quiet once she got slapped? LOL, it was like she was brought back to earth.

He also got what he deserved, never hit a woman, no matter what. I thought it was funny how he was crying at the end once everyone jumped him LOL.

Although it’s a different scenario, it is relevant to point out his feelings of loyalty to other Brazilian fighters. Whether it is not to fight them or not to train another fighter who is going to fight them, he is demonstrating his loyalty. Him losing to Spider if they fought is irrelevant, but true.

Comment by linx
2008-09-05 09:13:50

IDK, I’m pretty sure he’d fight other brazilians, the only reason he doesn’t want to fight the spider is because they train together. It just seems like an irrelevant topic to mention that again. He got so much heat for saying that about the chuck preparations last december and I’m thinking maybe he’ll get more heat than he would if mania did not mention that again…

Not irrelevant at all. What separates Anderson Silva from almost every other MMA great is the fact that he wants to fight as often as possible and consistently asks for only the best to challenge him, which I guess is unavoidable anyway given the position he’s in of defending his title (with that said, though, he doesn’t have to fight as often as he does).

Point is, the fight with Filho (a great fighter in his own right) would only solidify that fact, and continue to uphold Silva as MMA’s best. What was the reason Fedor had a “falling out” with fans over the past couple years? Only recently having fought decent competition (although I would hardly consider Sylvia “worthy” competition in my eyes) has he reaffirmed his spot at the top of the rankings.

I’m saying it’s irrelevant to this story to mention filho wouldn’t train with chuck prior to fighting wandy. Not that filho and anderson won’t fight each other because they train together.

LINX. your right, brazilians will fight other brazilians, just not from the same camp usually. a.silva’s manger has said on record that anderson would fight fihlo, but doesnt want to, because like you said they are friends. chutebox is the same way. so is aka(swick, koscheck, fitch)and mfs and team couture etc. i think it has more to do with what camp they come from than country. iv’e seen a few jungle rumble’s and it seems like there are alot of brazil vs brazil fighters.

That has got to be the worst excuse ever. So when he was growing up who did he fight? If he doesn’t want to fight against his countrymen then find a sport in the Olympics, otherwise he’s paid to be a fighter. He just knows he will get beat down and doesn’t want to lose his undefeated record. He has fought other
Brazilians in other organizations so this should be no different.

If Filho can string together a bunch of wins in the UFC, and Silva stay’s the champ (I don’t see how this will change), I’d expect Dana to get a Silva vs Filho fight done. Money has way of changing people’s minds. Really, it does. Filho can say he doesn’t want to fight Silva right now but it’s harder to say that when you are looking at a bunch of bills being pushed in your direction.
