randy and kim couture

Props: “Mr. Sunshine”

Quoteworthy:

“It’s surprising to me, shocking that they’d throw a guy in there with only three fights. I kind of feel sorry for the guy. He poses some interesting problems but that’s what Randy is good at, is taking care of those problems. He’s no bigger or tougher than (Gabe) Gonzaga or Tim Sylvia.”

Count Kim Couture, the wife of UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture, as among those who feel that inexperience will play a large role when “The Natural” takes on Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15. Lesnar has just three professional mixed martial arts bouts while Couture has nearly 25. Whatever, maybe she’s correct — experience could play a factor. But Lesnar is much bigger than Gonzaga or Sylvia. Maybe this thought process helps her sleep better at night.

Couture has to win fast… I know not to never count Couture out but to be honest if Couture decides to brawl then he’s a gonna fall. I mean I can see Couture pulling off a Mir but I CANT see Couture man handling Brock like he did gonzaga and tim.. So Kims comparison really doesnt fit in this scenario.

Sorry DJ but citing a couple of fights about someone who was once the king shit in his hayday in Pride makes no sense. I’m sure Randy will come out with a great gameplan and when he gets rocked with a lesnar hook that sends him back 10 feet like the first 5 seconds against Herring, we’ll see what his plans will be then. Gonzaga looked scared in their fight, and Timmy, well overrated comes to mind. As much as I love Captain America, I don’t see him winning this fight.

If ring rust doesn’t effect him, I could see him beating Brock in the clinch, stand up, and via GnP. If he gets taken down, I could see him either standing it up or constantly pressuring Brock with submission attempts until Brock wants it to be on their feet. I wonder if Randy could take Brock down? it would be interesting to see how Brock handles this….Randy too.

Comment by chefdaddy
2008-09-04 06:59:42

I think his best bet would be his dirty boxing and he’ll do far better than anyone expects if he can use his ground and pound. As for submissions? I don’t know about that. Lesnar’s inexperience will help him, but Randy only has two submission victories: against Mike van Arsdale in 2005 and Tony Halme (who?) in 1997.

I don’t know if he’ll want to implement dirty boxing against a guy who has fists the size of large turkey breasts. My guess is that he’ll use his wrestling to try and keep the fight standing unless he gets the chance for an easy take down.

If Brock wants the fight on the ground, it will be on the ground. NOBODY is going to stop one of his takedowns. And I don’t think Randy will want to trade punches in the clinch.

See the thing is Randy is really good at sticking to a game plan, and not alot of ppl know but he does have submission skills.. now that being said Brock fighting for a title shot is really unfair it does bring in a huge PPV event, but realisticly its not fair, but UFC doesn’t care about fair they care about ratings..It’s sad that the average Fan knows brock lesnar and haven’t warmed up to Big NOg the TRUE HW champ of the UFC… i really don’t think that the UFC wants randy as the HW champ because Lesnar is able to sell more PPV than Randy can. Randy appeals to true MMA fans, and brock to all those WWE fans/ new MMA casual fans that just want to see ppl get hurt.. I really hope randy pulls it off, cuz if he doesn’t don’t except to see FEdor vs Randy ever… cuz the ufc would never let Lesnar fight fedor, and if randy ain’t the champ whats the point of trying to find out who’s #1?? Bog Nog hasn’t beaten the champ so he technically isn’t the champ. Nog beat a former champ in Tim Sylvia and almost got knocked out by Heath Herring. While I do believe that nog is capable of beating Randy or Brock and Mir, he still needs to do so before he is considered the TRUE heavyweight champ. I think that he should be able to fight Randy right away but TUF through a monkey wrench into that. I also think that Randy should have been stripped of the title but whatever, it makes for interesting news.

Sylvia and Gabriel arn’t as strong as Brock, and Brock will probably out Wrestle couture, people need to stop comparing Brock to these guys. Whether Brock can take Couture is yet to be seen, but this is not going to be the best Brock we’ll see in the future that is for sure, he’s about 2-3 yrs away from that.

Brock tapped pretty quickly from that Mir ankle lock, right now I see Brock as a front runner type fighter, what happens if he’s tested?

Brock needs to overwhelm and KO Couture in the 1st rnd otherwise I think Couture will test Brock’s nose & chin and neck and heart.

YOU GUYS ARE LOW TO RIP ON HIS WIFE. SHE WOULD PROBABLY KICK MOST OF YOUR ASSES. Brock and Randy are both wrestlers, which means the fight wil hit the ground. Then what? Brock knows zero submissions and isn’t good at stopping them either. Randy was an olympic wrestler…Brock was an ncaa wrestler big difference. Brock has only had 2 fights and lost one of them. Herring sucks yet Brock could not knock him out. Brock left himself wide open for omo platas, box chokes and a dozen other submissions but Herring was trying to not lose rather than trying to be aggressive and win. Brock is the most over hyped man in mma……other than Kimbo.
I am sick of hearing about how big he is. Did anyone see 170lbs Royce Gracie tap kimo leopaldo? Dan Sevren? It is called jiu jitsu and Brock has already lost once to it. He is nothing but a blonde yetti and should go back to hitting guys in speedos with steele chairs.

First, if Kim wants to run her mouth about Brock in a public forum then people have a right to comment on it. Second, when was the last time Randy won a match with an omo or box choke or Peruvian necktie or flying atomic butt-drop or any of these other obscure moves? Third, comparing the early Gracie fights that he won when nobody else had even heard of BJJ to Brock-Randy is like comparing football in the days of leather helmets and 200-pound linemen to today’s NFL.

I don’t think Brock would be able to take Gonzaga, so if you want to do some MMA math he won’t beat Randy.

Though, that may be because his Sub defense isn’t enough to stop Gonzaga.

Comment by Chase

MMA math don’t work most of the time though, Even though I know lesnar needs to work on his Sub Def. But thats really all he needs to work on, His Wrestling is world class, His Power and speed are amzing for his size, His conditioning Is Amzing, and his hands have dropped Both the fighters he fought his one punch, All he needs to better Sub def, witch of course he’s working on, and He’ll be more of a force then he already is.

I think that’s one thing that has me giving Brock a chance. I’m not saying he’s going to win, but he’s FAR faster than Silva and Gonzaga. Both of those guys were sluggish and looked like they were just going to fall over at any second. Brock is really quick for his size and quicker than a lot of heavyweights out there.

What really pisses me off in all this is that Lesnar is about 100 miles ahead of where he should be. Nogueira should be the one getting the title shot. I understand why he’s not (because he’s due to fight Mir in December), but surely UFC’s 89-91 could have been re-carded, so as to move Fabricio Werdum in for a title shot instead of Brock? A 1-1 UFC record is hardly appropriate for a No.1 Contender.

People outside the sport have this idea of MMA as cage-fighting: that’s it’ just 2 gorillas tearing each other apart in a cage, cheered on by a crowd of moronic red necks. Lesnar speaks to that vision. It’s not just because of his pro-wrestling background or that he brings a fan base with him. It’s because of the way he behaves after a match. When he lost to Mir, he took comfort in the fact that Mir’s face was more messed up – remind you of anyone (Abbot)? And when he won against Herring, he just had to rub his face in it.

Lesnar talks about wanting respect and to be treated as a legit fighter. Getting a title shot like this isn’t the way to do it. Thankfully, Couture excels at reminding so-called big shots that they’re just another fighter down on the mat.

Comment by PW

Suppose he beats Randy’s ass. Then will he get the respect he wants? Not that he needs validation from a bunch of keyboard warriors, but still.

Brock is still very green, and he might feel the lack of experience on this fight. He’s huge and all, but couture is a master and he’s been doing this for a loooooooong time now. Plus, he trains with one if not the best camp in the world. I’m sure they are already putting together a gameplan for this fight. On another hand, none of Lesnar’s partners has the MMA knowledge that Couture and his camp have and he might not be able to execute his gameplan to perfection. I think Couture will win just because I don’t think Lesnar is ready yet.

I keep flipping back and forth on this one. On the one hand, Randy’s a master with high skills. On the other, Herring had skills too and Brock completely nullified them with speed size and power. I don’t care how good your kung fu is, if you’re fighting a bulldozer you’re gonna lose. Then I think about the fact that Timmie and Gonzaga weren’t exactly top-notch fighters, and Randy didn’t exactly dominate either of them. I mean he totally won, but didn’t finish it early or anything.

I’m wondering if people will ever get tired of attacking people the speaker of the quotes instead of just stating what they think? It’s sort of mind numbing.

While I will admit that pro wrestling is difficult, requires athletic ability, and that many pro wrestlers are coming from legitimate sports, I will maintain that anything that takes place in the squared circle has little or no bearing on what takes place in a mixed martial arts match. I also contend that anyone that refers to a feat performed by a pro wrestler in a worked match as though is has any relevance whatsoever is, by virtue of the fact that they watch that crap, a retard, an eleven year old, or both.

Brock is a different beast than Gonzaga or Sylvia. Heath Herring was talking about Brocks inexperience and how it was stupid for him to be fighting him. Brock isn’t a typical inexperienced MMA fighter. He has incredible tools that no other fighter really has. By saying this I am referring to the ratio of his strength size and speed. Combine that, with his wrestling background and his commitment to the sport, yeah. Good luck. I don’t know who is going to win this fight, but counting out either of them is ignorant.

hahaha Tim Sylvia is a joke! its embarrasing how many times he was heavyweight champ of the ufc! he got hit once from Fedor then accepted to tap he took the money and is a cowardly wimp! Sylvia looks slow i don’t see anything good about him. although Randys wins against him and Gonzaga where amazing.

Yeah, sometimes I wish Ricco Rodriguez had taken Tim seriously. If Ricco had won that fight, we might have seen Tim’s career take a completely different turn.

Nog is not fighting Randy because they already filmed the tuf show and hyped up a fight with Mir that is under contract as well. Brock though should be fighting Gonzaga or Kongo not Randy he hasn’t earned it YET.

yea she must of had some marbles knocked lose in that fight she had I think Randy is going to win but it wont be that easy. randy is going to either have to out strike Brock to a decision or submit him I am kind of falling towards the submission idea. and beside Brock is not Gabe Gonzaga or Tim Sylvia big he is Hung Man Choi big but I think he is also a better fighter than Hung. I wish Randy the best of luck and want him to win with every fiber in my body.

why do lesnar fans act surprised kim is supporting her husband? should she instead say “randy is going to get beaten because he’s smaller”

of course not. you guys react surprised, of course she’s going to have confidence in randy (as she should!)

btw the difference between kim, randy, and brock and the fans posting ignorant comments on here is that they fight! the rest of you are to big of pussies to step into an octagon. you’d rather sit on the sidelines and act like you know who the best mma fighter is and talk about how kim is stupid or randy/brock will get their ass kicked. shut the hell up already and stop acting like your experts – they are both good fighters and it’ll be a good match up.

Yea in case you did not notice that is what this site is for so take that crap somewhere else and come back later when you want to talk fighting you big baby I happen to like Kim and Randy way more than I do Brock, but the fact of the matter is she has no clue if she thinks this is going to be easy for Randy and neither do you. Sylvia and Gonzaga are not as big or as strong as Brock just look at the size of him compared to those two and you will see.

Josh Barnett beat Randy based largely on the size difference but I don’t see Brock being comfortable enough to even risk falling into someone’s guard. He can bring in the best BJJ guys out there to train with but that didn’t help James Irving’s Muay Thai against Silva LOL. Randy is going to end up on the ground but he has competed in BJJ competitions before and might suprises us with the kind of trick Ortiz almost pulled off.

I hope you are not talking about the weak submission attempt that Ortiz tried on Machida. Seriously people who look at that and think Ortiz knew what he was doing don’t know jack about submissions. If Ortiz had caught Machida in an armbar like Lutters against Franklin then I’d be impressed and even more so with Machida escaping it but thats not the case. Machida barely worked to get out of that submission as a matter of fact Tito’s transistion was after Machida rolled out so it has nothing to do with why Ortiz didn’t tap Machida. The plain truth is Ortiz doesn’t know jack about submissions. Which is the same thing here to compare Randy to tapping out Lesnar. The only real legitimate option for submission Randy has is an ankle lock or knee lock at best. That is not going to happen.

Randy has 2..count them 2 subs in his 10 year career and they weren’t against anyone the size or ability of Lesnar. One sub was 10 years ago against a can and the other was Mike Van Arsdale like 4 years ago. What would make you think that Randy is subbing Brock? He has more decision victories than any other type of win and I don’t see him beating Brock on points.

brock lesnar is a much stronger smarter wrestler than those guys, his wife should let him do the talking he is worried and she knows, jesus christ he cant take a punch from chuck at 205, he has no chance of standing if brock lands a punch remotely close to the one that put heath on his ass, lets all get serious gonzaga conditioning is horse crap compared to brocks, and tim sylvia just stays back defensively brock will be in his face all nite regardless the outcome he wont gas, show miss couture SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND KNOW YOUR ROLE…….

Brock is strong and smart? GTFOH hes 1 match removed from a 30 second tap out

I believe Randy could win without a doubt! But, He’s not gonna out-wrestle the monster and he had better not get caught square with one of Brock’s wrecking ball style punches Nope! If Randy’s gonna win, he’s gonna have to be real slick. And I think he can be! I can’t seem to pick a winner on this one. But, if it’s Randy, we’re all gonna see one brilliant fight plan!

It should be a very interesting match-up, Randy has the edge in experience, overall skills (wrestling, jiujitsu, dirty boxing etc), and I would dare say heart. Brock has the advantage in speed, strength, size and agility. Lucky punches aside, it’s will be an exciting match up. Randy is a great strategist – I look forward to seeing how he handles these challenges.

Bill sorry but Randy does not have the wrestling advantage here at all. Randy should not want this fight to get to the ground at all. If it gets there he will just waste his energy trying to get the gorilla off of him. Randy will not be able to submit lesnar either as once they are on the ground lesnars base will be too much for randy to handle and he will be controlled by the man who will outweigh him by 60 or more pounds. Randy needs to stay moving laterally to try to avoid brocks shots and land as many leg kicks as he can in the early rounds. Once that slows brock down, as he needs to due to Brock being twice as fast as him or anyone he has faced in a while, then he can start peppering him with jabs while still moving. I just hope for Randy’s sake that age really doesnt mean a thing for him and he does not get gassed from having to run all night in order to get a decision victory. If he does gas or this does go to the ground Brock will be singing randy a lulliby
