I don’t know what went wrong in my head. I don’t know what happened and why I chose to fight that fight on the ground. Sure I made the fight exciting and I’ve gotten lots of positive responses on how well I did on the ground with a guy like Maia. But at the end of the day, he caught me and that’s what he does best. I played into his game. It was a stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid fight on my behalf. And I take the full blame 100 percent for it. I’ll take it right on the forehead like I took those hundred elbows from Maia. And that’s that. I’m pretty disappointed because Maia was beatable if I had held that fight standing up. And I paid the price for not doing it.
– UFC middleweight Jason ‘The Athlete’ MacDonald grounds and pounds himself on Sportsnet.ca for not following his gameplan or the instructions from his corner during his submission loss to grappling phenom Demian Maia at UFC 87: ‘Seek and Destroy’ on August 9.

UFC QUICK QUOTE: Jason macdonald is stupid!!
Jason McDonald, Nutted on the sheets.
The talented fairy does what he always does, loose fights against top fighters. He is now the official gatekeeper to the middleweight division. STUPID doesnt even describe the insanity of taking a fight with Maia down to the ground. I dont even pay attention to the BS that comes out of the mouth of J-mac. I stopped caring about what he has to say a long time ago!
Yesterday: Randy and Fedor met along with their management teams in Los Angelas. THey met for hours. THey even met for brakfast and dinner. What the meetings were about is not known.
WHERE IS MY COMMENT THAT I POSTED HERE???????????
It was a regular comment, no profanity or anything, just analyzing the fight. WTF???
Its pointless to waste time typing out a well thought out post only to not have it appear. I typed it HOURS ago.
LOLOL. My bad Mania. Wrong thread. My comment I posted at the top was on the Shogun/Rampage thread.
My appologies. I am wetodded.
sofa king.. we tod ed..lol

Mac : No Comment
lol, what was te point of his converstion with Ed Herman?
MacDonald went stupid. True. But it’s not like he was winning the stand-up battle.
That’s what I thought too! He actually was trying to keep it on the feet and was being beat on the feet and started to clinch once that happened. Maia does not have KO power (not yet anyway) but he was still winning on the feet and on the ground. McDonald is not only stup*d, he’s delusional LOL.
But MacDonald had no chance at beating Maia on the ground, and there was a great chance that Maia would finish JMac on the ground. However, standing, like you said, Maia doesn’t yet have KO power, so at least JMac had the preverbial “punchers chance” if he kept the fight standing. He is the more well rounded striker of the two.
no doubt, his only chance was to keep it standing for sure.
McDonald strategy was honestly laughable! So he got out of a few early submissions, he still gt dominated on the ground. Maia’s jits is so good that he can mount opponents with ease when ever he wants. His ground n pound looked much better then I thought it would. His clinch game was even further along that I expected at this point in his transition from Ju jItsu to mma. Maia will continue to train with wanderlei and he will evolve into a complete fighter (kind of like Werdum did). When that happens, middleweights need to WATCH OUT!
The talented Fairy had no chance whatsoever on the ground, like VM said, standing at least he would have had a punchers chance.
You Should feel stupid jackass
FEDOR NEWS: Fedor will be ready to fight for his beloved Japanese fans on New Years. He will NOT fight Cro Cop, instead he will probably fight a Sumo wrestler or a Judo Legend (another Freakshow intended to appeal to the Japanese fans who made him the star he is today).
However he is looking forward to facing the winner of Barnett/arlovski!
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????????
Honestly, if he is fighting one of the fat focks you mention, I have one suggestion for Fedor - DON”T TAKE THE FIGHT!!!!
At least a fight against Cro Cop, or better yet, the winner of Cro Cop/Overeem if they do fight, would have at least been worth the risk. But none of those others are.
What is going to happen is he is going to fight some unskilled, overweight slob with a big, fat, hard head. Fedor’s hand may not be 100% going into the fight, and all us fans need is for him to break his hand again…. Then we would got see the winner of Barnett/Arlovski fight Fedor for a looong time and and by the time Randy gets him, Randy will be over 50.
AWFUL Idea, just AWFUL
VM: To us American’s its a terrible idea. But I respect him for giving back to the Japanese people that made him into the star that he is today. Unfortunately, those are the types of opponents that Japanese fans want to see him face (what strange fans they are).
I dont like the idea because it will just be another wasted fight, but I respect him for still giving back to the Japanese fans.
Dont worry about the hand injury. Fedor doesnt beat up too many of his opponents that are complete mismatches. He usually just shows off his submission skills against the Freakshow fighters. Expect a quick submission out of Fedor and then he will get ready to face the winner of Barnett/Arlovski in march!
Like u said, I too would rather see Fedor fight Cro Cop, overeem, Sergei or even a rematch with Hunt instead of a freakshow opponent. Unfortunately the wacky Japanese fans would rather see him fight some Huge Sumo wrestler or a Judo star!
Brock is a idiot nice fake tatoo’s
Who has fake tattoos?
What does this comment mean?
i actually dont know if your trying to get attention or just plain weird.
I think he is just trying to hate on Brock and call Brock’s chest tatoo fake because DbG is the originator of the real penis-on-chest tatoo. At least Brock had the decency to try to make it look like a sword. DbG’s got nut hair and all…
(Stupid Comments Deserve Stupid Responses!)
lol That’s funny.
ur a pussy
Lets just hope he comes back stronger. This is MMA. It happens.
MacDonald has been fighting since 1999 and at his age, he can’t be moving down the ladder, it’s do or die time.
The peek of MacDonald’s career was his fight against Franklin. I don’t ever see him fighting against someone of that caliber in the UFC again.
When the WEC & UFC combine 185 lbs if MacDonald is still in the UFC, He’s going to become a stepping stone type fighter.
This is just another bullshit way of MacDonald trying not to admit he was outclassed. He’s done it every single time he’s lost in the UFC.
The funniest was when he tried talking shit about Okami after their fight, saying Okami didn’t hurt him at all, yadda yadda. There’s a hilarious .gif out there of Okami bouncing MacDonald’s head off the mat over and over with “THIS DOESN’T HURT. HONEST.” written on it.
Did you see the fight, Mac hung in there pretty good on the ground and almost got a couple a subs, but yes I too was wonder what the f@ck he was doing?
Gatekeeping is a hard task. Also Maia has barely scratched the surface of his capabilities. His stand up and GNP need work but his cardio problem should go away soon thanks to Alejarra. I think he did awesome for only two weeks worth of “legitimate” training with wand.
If Maia can pick up some good stand up from Wandi, and improve his GNP he will be a force to deal with. I’m thinking give him some time to train, maybe 2 or 3 more fights and he could POSSIBLY be ready to take on The Spider.
Call me crazy but Lutter gave Anderson some problems so I think a great Jits guy may be able to beat Silva.
Took the words right out of my mouth good post. I’d like to see a Maia dismantling of winner of Bisping/Leben or a good fight for him would be Palharres/hendo which all you doubters roushimar will win!!!
I like the idea of him going up against winner of bisping/leben since he will have to step up his stand up. I don’t want him to face Toquinho (yes he will beat hendo) yet though that would probably be the sickest ground war in history of MMA. Mainly because i wanna see how Silva in the future responds to two very different styles of high level JJ.
I enjoy Maia’s fights, but his striking and wrestling would need to improve drastically for Maia to create opportunities to utilize his BJJ against Anderson.
It’s not that he’s stupid, it’s that he was stubborn. It seems to be the thing for fighters to want to beat other fighters at what their so called specialty is. If a guy is a BJJ guy, then the other fighter wants nothing more than to submit him. If the guy is a striker, then the other fighter wants to knock him out. Sometimes this can be pulled off by either elite well rounded fighters or by a fighter just getting a little lucky, but too many are trying it.
Macdonalds corner kept yelling at him in between rounds, stay off the mat and knock this guy out. If you are not going to listen to your cornermen, then why did you bring them? If I was in his corner I would have said after the fight, “You pull that shit again, you’re on your own!”
So in the end, maybe stupid is the word for him!!! lol!!!!
great Post! I totally agree!
GSP likes to do that. I think it just sends a message to the opponent that he has no way to win.
JMac has 20 wins. 16 by Submission and only 2 by KO. MacDonald wasn’t trying to pull a GSP and beat the opponent at his strength. He simply fell back into his most comfortable style of fighting, being stupid and not aknowledging that Maia is another another level as far as BJJ goes.
Agreed, He was trying to beat Maia at his own game, but it is also his game, so he didn’t know what else to do. That’s why you need to be intelligent enough as a fighter to listen to your corner and try to implement there advice. I know this is easier said than done, but then again that’s a cop out. These guys are professional fighters. Look at old Andy Wang!! How long and how loud was BJ yelling at him and he never even attempted to listen to him.
getrawbc - Agree totally. Yeah, I remember Andy Wang. That was just strange. I remember being baffled by Wang’s fantasy-based fighting strategy. I think Penn nailed it when he says that, even though Wang is a BJJ black belt, Andy has fantasies about being a great striker. When the UFC brought Wang back for a pro bout, Wang implemented the same “strategy”. I don’t think he attempted any takedowns, and was taken out of the fight fairly quickly. Why the guy would insist on striking when that was clearly his weakest link was baffling.
Back to MacDonald… yes, not a smart plan. I think the falling-back argument is the best explanation. Huerta did the same thing, fell back on what he knew.
Like u said, if you are going to ignore your corner, leave them at home!
I totally agree. J Mac wouldn’t listen and he lost. Perhaps he still would have lost by keeping the fight on his feet but we will never know.
I don’t know if Mac could have won this fight standing up or not but I do know that it was a very exciting, well fought competition. Besides the GSP/Fitch fight…IMO…this was the fight of the night.
I agree
I bthought this was actually better than the Fitch fight because while Fitch might have shown us that he has one of the toughest chins and biggest hearts in the WW division, he never posed even a small threat to GSP, while the Macdonald, Maia fight was back and forth. Maia was clearly winning every round but it wasn’t as one-sided.
THis was my favorite fight of the night.
Jmac fought like a stud on the ground. NOTHING to hang his head about. It was refreshing to see a techinical masterpiece…back and forth battle on the ground…to sort of compensate for the crap that Lesnar/Herring would bring.
I think you guys need to watch the fight again. He wasn’t losing in his standup; at first he took the fight to the ground, but later he was taken down a few times by Maia, and then finally was caught.
Two thingss: 1. no none can deny MacD did very well on the ground. 2. despite what happened, it’s a fact that MacD has better standup. So, one might have rightfully concluded that MacD would have one.
It’s MMA, people lose. I bet you guys wrote-off GSP when he lost to Serra, and Liddell when he lost to Jackson. It’s the nature of the sport and I think MacD is definately a force to be reconned with!
“Stupid is as stupid does.”
I’m not sure of Jason’s point with the self-flagellation. We all know that it wasn’t the best gameplan for him to take the fight to the ground. Hell, Jason even said before the fight that he planned to keep it standing. However, it’s also pretty obvious that Jason is not a striker and it would have been really difficult for him to come out as a striker in the Maia fight—even though it would have been to his advantage. He’s just not a comfortable striker, and against most guys in his division, he doesn’t need to be.
Maybe over time, MacDonald can become more comfortable engaging on the feet, but we’re talking years more of training. In the meantime, Jason should just move on to the next opponent. Striking for long periods of time in rounds goes against the grain for him and he’s going to have to be trained to rely on striking more.
Maia made his entrance with Wanderlei Silva, thats when the gameplan instantly changed. lol. na but he had a couple dominant positions, just didn’t capitalize. Even if it wasn’t the right gameplan, I thought it was a better fight than the main event just because it was more competitive.
FIRST OFF IM CANADIAN
AND SECOND MACDONALDS AN ASS,HE SAYS THE SAME THING TO EVERY LOSS ,THE SAME PHSYCOLOGY RUB OVER LIKE “I MADE IT EXCITING LIKE HES TRYING TO CONVINCE HIMSELF,OF HE DID OK ,NO U WERE TOTALLY OUTCLASSED AND SHOULDNT VE BEEN IN THE RING IN THE FIRST PLACE ,GO BACK TO MFC WHERE U BELONG….U R MID CARD AT BEST ,IM TIRED OF HIS LACKLUSTRE TALK OF HOW HES AWESME,…………JASON,GUILLIARD,BONNAR,SALAVERRY,SHOULD ALL GET WALKING PAPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally, I’m just shocked that the UFC still gives him such great opponents.
how cares it was a great fight
I was wondering what the heck he was doing. Even though Mac is not a true standup guy, this was one of the worst gameplan executions in recent memory.
