“Usually I’m a lot taller than my opponents. So when I put a knee up it usually lands to the chest or the stomach. [Andre Gusmao] is one of the taller opponents who I fought and I may have caught him a little low, which was totally accidental. But it feels great [to win in the UFC]. I thought about this many, many nights — dreaming about it, eating right and training hard. I accomplished my first goal. A big one, anyway.”
– Jon Jones talks about his winning Octagon debut at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” against Andre Gusmao this weekend at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The light heavyweight bout was stopped several times because Gusmao went down because of errant knees to the groin area. In Jones’ defense, replays showed that at least one of the blows Gusmao claimed was low really wasn’t. Anyway, Jones — who has a long and wiry frame similar to Anderson Silva — excited the crowd with his raw talent and improvisation within the cage that included spinning backfists, double spinning back elbows … crazy stuff. For someone with very little MMA experience he put on quite a show against a super tough opponent … on super short notice. Keep an eye out for this kid — he appears to have a very bright future. And his personality outside the cage is equally as impressive.

Where’s the fight posted at? I haven’t seen it yet.
No man with Onions would want to see this fight. Trust me.
yeah? did he crush his nuts badly? I still haven’t seen this fight and I know nothing about this kid Jon Jones but to be honest I was expecting Gusmao to submit him.
Me 2!! I got your text on the Gusmao result later that night.. Does anyone know where it can be seen. Was it BS.. or was jewels shots.
Hey it worked for Cheik Kongo…
it didn’t look that bad live. the first one looked like it connected. the second one was in the stomach… Gusmao actually caught Jones with one, but Jones didn’t even complain.
either way, it was a very good fight on a great card.
Best sounding name in MMA: John ‘Bones’ Jones.
great intro song too – “Angry Jonny”
They need to tighten up the rules surrounding low blows – a fighter always seems to be able to get away with 2 or 3 with hardly a warning. I mean what do you have to do to get deducted a point for kneeing someone in the nuts??
And like the poster above noted, it definitely worked for Kongo.
they wear cups!! shit happens in the heat of the moment!! no need 4 a point deducted 4 a low blow unless its obvious!!
