Quoteworthy:

Georges didn’t look as big as he has before and he seemed like he had gotten tired from the first round. Fitch had the game plan of countering Georges and you just can’t do that. You can’t counter a quicker fighter. To be honest, halfway in the third round I got up and walked out of the arena and went to my hotel. The fight wasn’t the most exciting and I wanted to get out of there before everyone else was getting up to leave.

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes shares his thoughts on the main event from UFC 87 “Seek and Destroy” on August 9. The Hillsboro, Ill., native may have been recalling the post-fight remarks made by Georges St. Pierre after Hughes defeated BJ Penn at UFC 63, or he may have just been ‘extremely bored’ as he admits to getting at live events.

OMG Look at me! I got the first comment…… Who gives a fuck? anyway, Hughes is mad that GSP is the new man, and that he is washed up, the only person I see him beating in the WW Div. is only Matt Sera hah, after that, he needs to Retire. If GSP would have landed any of the punches that Knocked down Fitch on Hughes, His old self would be In a coma.

You got that right, Hughes wouldn’t be able to take that punishment. I think Hughes has accepted the fact that 1 guy is better than him (GSP) and he can almost live with that. With Alves he is still in denial and now with Fitch, he has to think GSP is smaller, and not in as good of shape, otherwise he has to admit to himself that these new breed of fighters have past him. At 34, I don’t think Hughes is quite over the hill or really lost anything, It’s just that while he wasn’t moving forward, these younger guys were (at a fast rate). This must be eating him up if he had to leave in the 3rd round. It had to be clear to him that Fitch was fairing much better than he was on the ground and had already lasted longer than he did. Who knows, maybe he was hoping GSP would move to MW and he could be KING again. That dream was squashed when he realized how good Fitch is.

Hughes is/was no doubt one of the most dominating fighters in the UFC,I have to respect what he’s done for the sport, but now, the sh*7t he’s saying sounds so bitter. He sounds like Tito. He’s falling off.

34 is still young, some people just can’t evolve though, and thats the problem with hughes, Brock is in his 30s and is new to mma, but he is good was learning and adapting to new stuff. 34 shouldn’t be his excuse, matt hughes just can’t adapt and won’t evlove any futhuer. RIP HUGHES.

What’s ironic is how when Hughes fought Royce Gracie, he went on and on about how Royce was too one dimensional and called himself a new breed of fighter. Now it’s Hughes that is considered one dimensional and GSP/Fitch/Alves etc that are the “new” breed. It’s only been like, what, two years since that fight? Damn this sport is evolving quickly!

So, basically Hughes is saying that he is bitter and really only left the arena after he realized Fitch was not going to pull a Serra and allow Hughes to gloat and laugh on camera again about someone else beatin GSP cause he knows he can’t do it.(inhale!)

This is just BS, and shows how tasteless and arrogant Hughes is. talk about being a hater. He had the audacity to say that one of the best fights of the year was boring? GTFO here! That was a more exciting fight than ny fight Hughes has ever been involved in. Hughes doesnt have half the skills of GSP or Half the toughness of Fitch.

This really makes me mad! i cant wait to see him get KO’ed again! What a bitter old fOOL!

He’s got a point about GSP’s size though. They always look small at weighins, but I thought the same thing when GSP came out for the fight. I couldn’t believe how BIG he looked vs. Hughes III. And saturday he just didn’t seem to have it. Of course maybe it’s all relative. . . Fitch is a freakin huge welterw8. Isn’t he like 6′1″.

I’d like to point out I’m a big Hughes fan so you can all hate on me if you’d like. This is not ment to be a malice attack on Georges and if you read his whole article he states that he gets bored watching the UFC events. To say the least he was only speaking the truth and said nothing about how GSP fought or anything bad just saying he looked smaller and Fitch should have tried a different game plan. You are all way to quick to hate on Hughes but whatever do what makes you feel best. I found nothing in here offensive in the least to Georges… Georges looked smaller (cause Fitch is bigger than him, he got a little tired in the first, he was dominating Fitch and it was boring so I left before the rush). Lol I do the same thing during a football game, the Patriots are spanking another team by 30 points in the 4th, I’ll switch the channel and watch something else.

Cogito: I really respect your opinions but I dont think its fair to compare GSP vs. Fitch to an NFL blow out. I won $300 betting on GSP but let me tell you that even after GSP destroyed Fitch in the 1st round, I was so nervous that Fitch would catch him for the next 4 rounds. I was on the edge of my seat for that entire fight. Fitch is so tough and dangerous, and he just kept coming at GSP (terminator style). Although GSP dominated the fight, It wasnt really a blow out because I still think that Fitch was in it for most of the fight.

To call a fight of the year candidate boring, is just a slap in the face. Hughes has never had a fight that was as exciting as Fitch vs. GSP, therefore he has no business bad mouthing the fight. So what If GSP was smaller, did you stop and think that maybe he was emphasizing SPEED for his game plan against Fitch?

He gets bored at the events? Why come? I get bored watching his 1 dimensional fighting style! Both GSP and Fitch fought there hearts out on saturday night and its just tasteless for anyone to suggest otherwise! IT WAS A GREAT FIGHT!

In this case Cogito, we will just agree to disagree!

No love lost man, I can agree to disagree but just click the link and read his blog (posted on his website not an interview) and you’ll see he wasn’t being malicious. I think Hughes likes that GSP is winning because it means Hughes lost to the champ. I understand the slap in the face but the title of this post doesn’t actually fit the post itself. IMO most fighters like to watch the fights but would actually rather be in the ring themselves, they show up to these events to support their company. I love it when they show up to other events because it shows their love for the sport. Anyway like I said, read the article cause he doesn’t say anything else about GSP so he doesn’t actually say he isn’t impressed with GSP but he does comment on Brock and Huerta. Hughes is generally a good guy and I hate to see everyone bash him. I actually think almost all of his fights are amazingly exciting because he normally isn’t winning the entire fight. Hughes imo has the biggest heart in the WW division (based on his fights) but then again after that beating Fitch took he could be a top contender for that title.

Fight of the Year, John? NO way. No fight that is scored 50-44 pretty much across the board will ever be considered fight of the year. Fitch hardly had any offensive attacks. He was always on the defensive.

Fitch now realizes like everyone else, that GSP is simply on another level than all other WW’s. I would still like to see Thiago Alves eventually get a shot if he beats Diego. GSP lost to Serra by a big looping punch. Thiago would be aiming for right behind George’s ear. That is the only fight at WW that I’d want to see GSP in.

In order, assuming that GSP wins the first two of these fights, I would like to see him fight:

BJ Penn at WW
Thiago Alves
and then if he wins both of those, then move up to 185 to fight Anderson Silva.

If BJ beats GSP and becomes WW champ, do you think he will try defending it a time or two, or do you think he’ll keep climbing the ladder and want to fight Anderson?

VM, normally I would agree that a fight with that wide a scoring range wouldn’t even be mentioned as FOTY, however Fitch showed he’s not your normal fighter. It’s happened more than once before, that a fighter was dominating and punched himself out, only to have his opponent come back and take him out, because he had nothing left to defend himself with. With Fitches heart and chin, that could have happened in this fight. It wasn’t in the bag for GSP, until the final bell. I wasn’t worried for a moment, when GSP was fighting Hughes and Serra 2. I can’t say the same for this fight.

You crack me up Chase with your comment. Very funny. Hughes has lost touch with what made him a UFC Champion. The fact he would disrespect GSP and John Fitch is not good. Let alone he would actually post that he walked out of the fight. It’s not like he would get yet another rematch with GSP. I guess those that can’t teach and bitch. He needs to be careful ’cause one punch and he could lose the fight with Serra. It happened with GSP. Hughes and Serra is nothing like Tito and Shamrock. The difference is no one cares about the fight between Hughes and Serra.

The difference with Anderson Silva and GSP is…

I agree with the above two posts. GSP’s stand-up was pretty much what I expected, solid but not great. Good enough to score on Fitch and not get caught for 5 rounds. Anderson Silva is not only the superior fighter, he’s a bad style match-up as well. Even if Anderson and GSP were the same size naturally, I’d still give it to Anderson. GSP only chance is because he has great freestyle wrestling. I know Hendo is a great wrestler, but he’s a Greco guy, and we know Anderson doesn’t have any trouble in a clinch. GSP won’t clinch with Silva, he’ll try to take his legs. I actually give BJ a better chance than GSP against Silva, even though I think GSP would edge out BJ in 5 rounds. This is my opinion on these fighters’ chances if they fought:

GSP vs. BJ — 55% GSP, 45% BJ
GSP vs. Silva — 80% Silva, 20% GSP
BJ vs. Silva — 70% Silva, 30% BJ

Comment by Adam

GSP vs. BJ – 90% GSP, 10% BJ
GSP vs. Silva – 90% Silva, 10% GSP
BJ vs. Silva – 100% Silva

GSP is an awesome fighter but it would be a mistake for him to move up to middleweight to challenge Anderson. There is just to big of a size disadvantage. IMO, it would be a terrible mismatch. Not skill wise, but size and strength wise.
As far as BJ goes, GSP would be way to much for him. To explosive and strong and could take him down and GNP him.

It was good for him to be in a battle and show that he has toughness to go along with his skills and dedication to the sport.

I know this for sure that when George gets to old like Hughes is and some other kid comes along and takes the dominant position in his division he will be respectful and classy. It is tough to come to grips with being on the decline of your career, but comments likes that are just childish.

GSP came into the ring and instead of congratulating Hughes on a win and telling him he’d like to be his next opponent, he attacked Hughes in his moment of glory. Hughes on the other hand writes a blog on his own site for his fans to read saying that GSP looked tired in the first round and that the fight was boring but nothing actually bad about GSP and you jump his nuts. Get over yourselves and also Hughes has been a very respectful champ in all of his fights, when have you seen him bad mouth anyone after a hard fight?

I used to be a huge Matt Hughes fan but his comments here are unbelievable. I met Hughes in person and he seemed pretty nice and after his fights he seems respectful and makes no excusses, but its comments like these that make him seem like such a dick. Hughes couldn’t beat either one of those guys so why make a comment like that. And I can’t believe he didn’t think that was an exciting fight. That was a great fight, alot better than the one he put on in his last two fights!

BJ has never armbarred anyone from his back, and he sure as heck won’t armbar GSP.

GSP sees submissions before the other guy can even get close to them. He’s also too explosive to get subbed by pretty much anyone.

If he left himself open 5 times and didn’t even come close to being armbarred, he DIDN’T leave himself very open, did he. BJ has NEVER armbarred ANYBODY, what makes you think he will armbar GSP. GSP has won by armbar, kimura and choke. BJ has 5 chokes (that’s it)and has NOT pulled off any other subs in a fight.

Comment by jay
2008-08-12 19:18:16

Are you serious about that stat? BJ has never submitted anyone ever by anything other than a choke? WOW. I didn’t even bother looking something like that up because I figured he was the submission master. I know 9 year olds that know how to choke someone out, but Mr. BJJ hasn’t even been able to win by an arm bar, leg lock, kimura(how do you spell it kimora?) I have to go find this out. If it’s true I want all BJ nut lovers to quit calling the guy a black belt or JJ master or whatever.

Meh…I’m pretty disapointed in Hughes for these comments and here’s what I’ve taken out of this:

1. Hughes should feel like quite the b**** because GSP never game him that respect after he basically KO’d him twice in their second fight and when he had to verbally tap after insulting GSP’s arm bar defense.
2. Hughes should also feel lucky that GSP didn’t torture him for the full time because it’s hard to drive a tractor with one eye swollen shut.

Maybe once Hughes gets a cane for his busted a** old knee he can take a crack at Fitch and see what he’s all about.

It’s really disappointing because I respect the h*** out of Hughes for being the champ that he was…Too bad there’s no riding off into the sunset quietly for him…

Who is this guy again? haha….Matt Hughes??!!???

GSP was dominated that fight. TRUE he didn’t finish John Fitch but no one has in 5 years. The truth of the matter is GSP won that fight one sided and when I looked at Fitch’s face and felt bad for the guy, but I give him all the credit in the world because he is one tough son of a bitch. To me that was a classic war, I prefer fights to go the distance than 1rst round KO’s. I was like on the edge of my seat every second of each round. So your crazy if you think GSP didn’t look good. That fight was from from boring.

As for Matt Hughes, he is becoming a victim to the new generation of younger, stronger, faster fighters. It hurts him because he was once in the same position as GSP. He used to be the new breed of MMA, he said it himself when he fought Royce Gracie and defeated him. Now he’s in Royce’s position. Time has changed and MMA competition is at a higher level. It is evolving without him and he can’t keep up with the pace. I’m sorry Mattie but its time to retire. The truth hurts buddy.

Very good point, Huges is constantly in ‘Huges land’ it’s a fictional world where people actually care about him. He takes little shots at people trying to stir up a possible match. Maybe he’ll start working on Fitch? I’d rather see Fitch vs Alves 2 but I’d still watch Hughes get KO’d again in the near future.

Let’s not forget the opponents each has faced while defending said title. Although Hughes did defend against GSP and I will always respect him for that. Even if he is acting like a fucktard. GSP just beat Fitch to defend the title and he would beat anyone Hughes has ever had to defend against and would also beat HUGHES in his prime. So more successful champion-HUGHES
Better fighter and better respected champion-GSP

Given that he’d probably also lose to Koscheck and BJ, who is he to talk shit? Plus what he’s saying’s not true anyway. GSP gave a great performance, and he didn’t look smaller at all. Nor did he look tired. He fought the 5th round at the same pace he did the 1st, for crying out loud! Hughes is such a hypocrite, can anyone imagine how his over the hill ass would look after 5 rounds against Fitch? Oh, I almost forgot again, he probably couldn’t even make it that far. For anyone who wonders why so many people think Hughes is a dick, here’s further evidence. Hughes = SORE LOSER AND LIAR.

1) To those who say Fitch had a lot of heart, it wasn’t proven in this fight (not saying he doesn’t have it, just that it wasn’t proven). I would agree that he’s tough and had good defense, but that’s different than having a lot of heart. At no point in the match did GSP have a firm submission hold on him, nor was GSP pounding the crap out of him for a “long” period of time. That’s when you can tell a fighter’s heart, whether he taps out or whether he can gather himself and overcome the situation. Sure, Fitch was beaten convincingly and his face showed it, but that was from GSP’s consistent strikes throught out the 25 minutes. No fighter would just tap out cuz he got hit a few times then move out of the way, then get hit a few times more.
Which leads me to point 2.

2) As dominate as GSP was in the fight, he still should have been able to finish Fitch off. He had a lot of opportunities to do it when he knocked down Fitch but was not able to capitalize on them. I remember at one point, Fitch was on his knees and GSP was just giving him these cheap jabs to the face. How did he expect to finish him like that? Another time, GSP was attempting the RNC but seemed like it was in slow motion. Obviously Fitch was able to get out of that and then got the dominant position.
GSP needs to do better than that to finish BJ. Albeit he may still win cuz of his athleticism.

Comment by Gord
2008-08-12 13:20:05

What? GSP threw everything but the kitchen sink at Fitch, EVERY time he had him rocked. Fitch survived ALL of them and I think the amount of heart he has was evident, considering MOST fighters would’ve quit (voluntarily or otherwise) after the first round barrage of punishment. We don’t know GSP has to do better than that to beat BJ. We don’t even know if BJ can beat an animal like Fitch let alone destroy him like GSP did. The question you should ask yourself is, Is beating Sherk over 3, not so dominating rounds, going to be enough to beat a MACHINE like GSP? I for one don’t think so.

Comment by Pat
2008-08-12 14:37:34

I disagree with your first point. Most fighters wouldn’t tap, but they would just turtle up after taking those shots. Fitch kept grabbing a single after he got rocked.

Watch the first round again. The first round GSP hit him hard over and over again. Fed him several solid connecting elbows and the whole time instead of going completely limp, Fitch kept squirming and grabbing. At a certain point when it’s clear he’s not ready to go, GSP had to start pacing himself because you can punch yourself out and get in deep trouble. Most fighters would have gone limp.

Agree with everyone but the dude who started this thing. I, like many people don’t know much of Fitch because he is so quiet and not in the press a lot. But that guy showed more heart in that fight alone than you have in your whole life. He could have crumpled and allowed the ref to break it up, but he kept on standing even if a couple times the fence was holding him up. But he didn’t quit until the final buzzer and he would have fought 2 more rounds if he had to. Point is he knew he was down in the scorecards and still put on a great show in every round. Guy’s got heart, no question.

OK, so my first time posting here. I admit to being a Hughes fan (originally from the midwest), as in the first stages of his career he struck the image of all hard work, humble values, etc. He was a dominant fighter. He truly was a gamer, a tough champion, and ruled the WW division in what could be considered the second wave of UFC fighers.

Then, the thrid wave started, guys that trained in all the major elements instead of just dominating one. Hughes heard the early criticism and saw that the well rounded fighers gave him trouble, but YET STILL refused to re-train. If he started say 4 years ago, he would have more game. It was exactly his cocky attitude that he doesn’t need to do anything new, his ego, etc, that kept him from doing this. He just kept on doing waht he’s doing. I mean, this dude trains with Tommy Spear?! GSP flies around the world learning the various arts. His hardwork pays off and he is and deserves to be #1. Hughes made his own bed now he has to lie in it.

At this point, he needs to shut his yap, because he is going to ruin his legacy beyond repair. His ego of losing is killing him.
