Georges didn’t look as big as he has before and he seemed like he had gotten tired from the first round. Fitch had the game plan of countering Georges and you just can’t do that. You can’t counter a quicker fighter. To be honest, halfway in the third round I got up and walked out of the arena and went to my hotel. The fight wasn’t the most exciting and I wanted to get out of there before everyone else was getting up to leave.
Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes shares his thoughts on the main event from UFC 87 “Seek and Destroy” on August 9. The Hillsboro, Ill., native may have been recalling the post-fight remarks made by Georges St. Pierre after Hughes defeated BJ Penn at UFC 63, or he may have just been ‘extremely bored’ as he admits to getting at live events.

Hughes is Old.
OMG Look at me! I got the first comment…… Who gives a fuck? anyway, Hughes is mad that GSP is the new man, and that he is washed up, the only person I see him beating in the WW Div. is only Matt Sera hah, after that, he needs to Retire. If GSP would have landed any of the punches that Knocked down Fitch on Hughes, His old self would be In a coma.
You got that right, Hughes wouldn’t be able to take that punishment. I think Hughes has accepted the fact that 1 guy is better than him (GSP) and he can almost live with that. With Alves he is still in denial and now with Fitch, he has to think GSP is smaller, and not in as good of shape, otherwise he has to admit to himself that these new breed of fighters have past him. At 34, I don’t think Hughes is quite over the hill or really lost anything, It’s just that while he wasn’t moving forward, these younger guys were (at a fast rate). This must be eating him up if he had to leave in the 3rd round. It had to be clear to him that Fitch was fairing much better than he was on the ground and had already lasted longer than he did. Who knows, maybe he was hoping GSP would move to MW and he could be KING again. That dream was squashed when he realized how good Fitch is.
Hughes is/was no doubt one of the most dominating fighters in the UFC,I have to respect what he’s done for the sport, but now, the sh*7t he’s saying sounds so bitter. He sounds like Tito. He’s falling off.
34 is still young, some people just can’t evolve though, and thats the problem with hughes, Brock is in his 30s and is new to mma, but he is good was learning and adapting to new stuff. 34 shouldn’t be his excuse, matt hughes just can’t adapt and won’t evlove any futhuer. RIP HUGHES.
What’s ironic is how when Hughes fought Royce Gracie, he went on and on about how Royce was too one dimensional and called himself a new breed of fighter. Now it’s Hughes that is considered one dimensional and GSP/Fitch/Alves etc that are the “new” breed. It’s only been like, what, two years since that fight? Damn this sport is evolving quickly!
Add Kos to the new breed, and yes, that is funny lol. and I think is was 3 or 4 years.
So, basically Hughes is saying that he is bitter and really only left the arena after he realized Fitch was not going to pull a Serra and allow Hughes to gloat and laugh on camera again about someone else beatin GSP cause he knows he can’t do it.(inhale!)
This is just BS, and shows how tasteless and arrogant Hughes is. talk about being a hater. He had the audacity to say that one of the best fights of the year was boring? GTFO here! That was a more exciting fight than ny fight Hughes has ever been involved in. Hughes doesnt have half the skills of GSP or Half the toughness of Fitch.
This really makes me mad! i cant wait to see him get KO’ed again! What a bitter old fOOL!
Why are people still concerned about a guy who will never win again in the UFC? Everything Huges says is sh*t, we know that, so why interview him, just to hear him talk more sh*t about two fighters who would destroy him?
Hughes is just a klown and a hater at heart!
He’s got a point about GSP’s size though. They always look small at weighins, but I thought the same thing when GSP came out for the fight. I couldn’t believe how BIG he looked vs. Hughes III. And saturday he just didn’t seem to have it. Of course maybe it’s all relative. . . Fitch is a freakin huge welterw8. Isn’t he like 6′1″.
I’d like to point out I’m a big Hughes fan so you can all hate on me if you’d like. This is not ment to be a malice attack on Georges and if you read his whole article he states that he gets bored watching the UFC events. To say the least he was only speaking the truth and said nothing about how GSP fought or anything bad just saying he looked smaller and Fitch should have tried a different game plan. You are all way to quick to hate on Hughes but whatever do what makes you feel best. I found nothing in here offensive in the least to Georges… Georges looked smaller (cause Fitch is bigger than him, he got a little tired in the first, he was dominating Fitch and it was boring so I left before the rush). Lol I do the same thing during a football game, the Patriots are spanking another team by 30 points in the 4th, I’ll switch the channel and watch something else.
Cogito: I really respect your opinions but I dont think its fair to compare GSP vs. Fitch to an NFL blow out. I won $300 betting on GSP but let me tell you that even after GSP destroyed Fitch in the 1st round, I was so nervous that Fitch would catch him for the next 4 rounds. I was on the edge of my seat for that entire fight. Fitch is so tough and dangerous, and he just kept coming at GSP (terminator style). Although GSP dominated the fight, It wasnt really a blow out because I still think that Fitch was in it for most of the fight.
To call a fight of the year candidate boring, is just a slap in the face. Hughes has never had a fight that was as exciting as Fitch vs. GSP, therefore he has no business bad mouthing the fight. So what If GSP was smaller, did you stop and think that maybe he was emphasizing SPEED for his game plan against Fitch?
He gets bored at the events? Why come? I get bored watching his 1 dimensional fighting style! Both GSP and Fitch fought there hearts out on saturday night and its just tasteless for anyone to suggest otherwise! IT WAS A GREAT FIGHT!
In this case Cogito, we will just agree to disagree!
GSP vs. Fitch a Fight of the Year candidate??? It didn’t even win Fight of the Night!!!
No love lost man, I can agree to disagree but just click the link and read his blog (posted on his website not an interview) and you’ll see he wasn’t being malicious. I think Hughes likes that GSP is winning because it means Hughes lost to the champ. I understand the slap in the face but the title of this post doesn’t actually fit the post itself. IMO most fighters like to watch the fights but would actually rather be in the ring themselves, they show up to these events to support their company. I love it when they show up to other events because it shows their love for the sport. Anyway like I said, read the article cause he doesn’t say anything else about GSP so he doesn’t actually say he isn’t impressed with GSP but he does comment on Brock and Huerta. Hughes is generally a good guy and I hate to see everyone bash him. I actually think almost all of his fights are amazingly exciting because he normally isn’t winning the entire fight. Hughes imo has the biggest heart in the WW division (based on his fights) but then again after that beating Fitch took he could be a top contender for that title.
Fight of the Year, John? NO way. No fight that is scored 50-44 pretty much across the board will ever be considered fight of the year. Fitch hardly had any offensive attacks. He was always on the defensive.
Fitch now realizes like everyone else, that GSP is simply on another level than all other WW’s. I would still like to see Thiago Alves eventually get a shot if he beats Diego. GSP lost to Serra by a big looping punch. Thiago would be aiming for right behind George’s ear. That is the only fight at WW that I’d want to see GSP in.
In order, assuming that GSP wins the first two of these fights, I would like to see him fight:
BJ Penn at WW
Thiago Alves
and then if he wins both of those, then move up to 185 to fight Anderson Silva.
If BJ beats GSP and becomes WW champ, do you think he will try defending it a time or two, or do you think he’ll keep climbing the ladder and want to fight Anderson?
VM, normally I would agree that a fight with that wide a scoring range wouldn’t even be mentioned as FOTY, however Fitch showed he’s not your normal fighter. It’s happened more than once before, that a fighter was dominating and punched himself out, only to have his opponent come back and take him out, because he had nothing left to defend himself with. With Fitches heart and chin, that could have happened in this fight. It wasn’t in the bag for GSP, until the final bell. I wasn’t worried for a moment, when GSP was fighting Hughes and Serra 2. I can’t say the same for this fight.
it was fight of the night
You crack me up Chase with your comment. Very funny. Hughes has lost touch with what made him a UFC Champion. The fact he would disrespect GSP and John Fitch is not good. Let alone he would actually post that he walked out of the fight. It’s not like he would get yet another rematch with GSP. I guess those that can’t teach and bitch. He needs to be careful ’cause one punch and he could lose the fight with Serra. It happened with GSP. Hughes and Serra is nothing like Tito and Shamrock. The difference is no one cares about the fight between Hughes and Serra.
CHASE: Jeez, there’s no room to directly reply; Hughes fought Royce Gracie May 27, 2006 at UFC 60, so just over two years ago.
Oh, Times fucked up for me then hah.
how is 50 - 43 not a blowout?
and jealous
and a dickhead
and washed up
and bigheaded
and dana’s bitch
and a dickhead (I had to list that one twice)
I see hah.
Anybody see fitch after the fight cuz he looked like he got into a car accident
I’d rather be in a car accient than have GSP pound on me for 25 minutes!
Yea, must be hard and depressing knowing he can’t be a winner in the octagon anymore, I’m a hughes fan, but come on, stop ur bi tching
wow, I just lost a ship load of respect for this guy. Quit it already……
Everytime he opens his yap, he loses boat-loads of respect.
Hughes was negative about Couture’s book, stating he has no interest in reading it. Then he is negative about GSP & Fitches fight.
Take sum anti-D’s, hop on your John Deere Tractor and retire all ready…
Matt Serra: “He’s a bit of a Dickhead, when I punch that guys face I feel like a winner already”
Hughes was right the GSP VS FITCH Fight was BORING in comparison to GSP VS HUGHES: “I TAP! I TAP! Ahhhhh”!!!!”
quality entertainment.
THorazine: Me and m y brother always make fun of that. “Tap, I tap” (in my best Matt Hughes, “Beefed up Alvin n the chipmunks voice”)
I think it’s funny how Rogan once said that Matt and his brother grew banging each other behind the garage. HAHAHAHA.
Hughes has said, if he can’t win he won’t play. He’s a front runner, and now that he’s fallen behind the pack he’s turned bitter. I hope they often use the “I TAP! I TAP! for some of the best of GSP’s highlights!
Chase is right about Hughes. Although a hall-of-famer, his stock has fallen considerably and as he talks more people will likely listen less.
I think Hughes got his feelings hurt when GSP said that Fitch was his toughest test to date. Hughes was hoping that GSP would always idolize him and keep him in his thoughts as his toughest test. Times change.
Hillbilly days are over. The real athletes are fighting now. Go bale some hay or something.
word, when we want to see some hillbilly dry-humping we’ll call ya. who does this guy think he is, walking out because it was boring, the only exciting hughes fights are the ones where he gets KTFO!!
We don’t give a rat’s a$$ if Hughes wasn’t impressed. UFC 87 was a sick card, w/all the undercards livin’ up to the hype. If he wants to be impressed, he should watch the WWE Smackdown, LMAO!
what a douche ..i mean come on dude its not like ur old a$$ could beat them!
hughes is just upset he couldnt hang in there as long as fitch could against GSP
i used to be a hughes fan until right after tuf 6 ..its comments like this that make me wish hed retire and stop acting like hes invincible!
And the forcing people to read Bibles, right? hahaha
He ran out of the building scared to get his ass kicked by either of them. Yes Fitch would whip his butt.
i agree! i wish hughes could magically heal his knee(god maybee?) and see him and fitch fight next. fitch would blow hughes away and afterwards hughes would say that he wasnt that impressed, he wasnt really trying and fitch really isnt a top 5 fighter.
What more conformation do you need that he is tied for the biggest A-hole in the UFC, right there with Koscheck.
He wasn’t impressed until he got his ass kicked by GSP. Fitch wasn’t impressed and got his ass kicked. The only thing that saved him is his Homer Simpson like ability to take a punch. Just like Liddell decided not to try to knock Wanderlei (sp) out because it wasn’t going to happen. Hughes can’t beat him so he should be less impressed with himself.
Uhh i believe there was less than a minute on the ground in Liddell silva where you getting liddell decided not to try to ko him sure as hell looked like he was trying to me.Still believe best fight in ufc history by the way.
He should just retire an open up a John Deer dealership so he can be a one dimensional dickhead salesman.
I think Hughes would be able to attract customers but never make a sale because he’s too 1-dimensional. He wouldn’t be able to close. And would just end up leaving work early because he wasn’t impressed with the performances of the top sellers.
I agree with Hughes…
GSP wasn’t 100%. It doesn’t matter though. He still beat a great fighter decisively.
Does Matt Hughes still think he is a force in MMA? As if anyone cares what he thinks.
i felt the sameway gsp looked like shit and all his nuthuggers are gonna say “oh he won” or “he beat one of the best guys in the division” whatever fact is he looked like shit and he probably wouldnt be able to beat someone like bj if he fights like that ever again, and no hughes said he’s got at least one more fight in him but he knows he’s not gonna be champion again..
wassup hater!?
randy murders - Well, we saw two different fights. You must have seen some other GSP vs. Fitch bout. The one I saw had GSP beating the crap out of Fitch, but unable to put him away.
Recommend: go to UFC’s site and watch the post-fight press conference interviews. Excellent. Your opinion of those fights may change after hearing from Fitch and GSP.
LOL at this BJ nuthugger.
GSP was incredible, and BJ would get destroyed by GSP now
I also came away from this fight saying GSP would be get DESTROYED by Anderson Silva when he decides to move up to middleweight. . .
The difference with Anderson Silva and GSP is…
Anderson is a striker at a whole different level. He finishes every fight. EVERY fight. No decisions.
GSP uses his arsenal to get winning decisions. GSP said it himself…He couldn’t finish Fitch. Maybe that is his next step in improving his game.
I agree with the above two posts. GSP’s stand-up was pretty much what I expected, solid but not great. Good enough to score on Fitch and not get caught for 5 rounds. Anderson Silva is not only the superior fighter, he’s a bad style match-up as well. Even if Anderson and GSP were the same size naturally, I’d still give it to Anderson. GSP only chance is because he has great freestyle wrestling. I know Hendo is a great wrestler, but he’s a Greco guy, and we know Anderson doesn’t have any trouble in a clinch. GSP won’t clinch with Silva, he’ll try to take his legs. I actually give BJ a better chance than GSP against Silva, even though I think GSP would edge out BJ in 5 rounds. This is my opinion on these fighters’ chances if they fought:
GSP vs. BJ — 55% GSP, 45% BJ
GSP vs. Silva — 80% Silva, 20% GSP
BJ vs. Silva — 70% Silva, 30% BJ
GSP vs. BJ - 90% GSP, 10% BJ
GSP vs. Silva - 90% Silva, 10% GSP
BJ vs. Silva - 100% Silva
GSP is an awesome fighter but it would be a mistake for him to move up to middleweight to challenge Anderson. There is just to big of a size disadvantage. IMO, it would be a terrible mismatch. Not skill wise, but size and strength wise.
As far as BJ goes, GSP would be way to much for him. To explosive and strong and could take him down and GNP him.
I agree 100% with you Adam.
GSP to big for BJ
Silva to big for BJ
Silva to big for GSP.
When Silva fought Yushin Okami back in 06 he actually fought at 170. He really looked like a spider. He could easily be the WW, MW, and LHW champion right now. He’s the true P4P champ.
People need to stop with this ‘hes scared and jealous of GSP’ crap…I don’t know if if you guys only started watching MMA sometime after TUF, but Hughes actually BEAT GSP once. You can’t really be scared of someone who you beat. And don’t throw in any excuses cos HE BEAT HIM.
I do however agree, that he’s acting like an ass lately and you can’t really do that with a recent track record like his interms of performance and wins vs losses.
Because in his last two fights with St. Pierre he’s been KO’d twice and in the second fight he yell and beg the ref to stop the fight!
Jon Fitch must have some qualitys that “”The Biggest name in the WW history”" doesnt have huh?
And what about GSP?
He is done!
Jee, his arm was trapped so he couldnt tap. I’d rather “yell” then have my arm snapped because I’m sure in the back of his mind he knew he wanted to fight Serra next.
And I am a huge Hughes fan, but I think he needs to chill out with his comments, focus on getting healthy to whoop Serra, then retire and run his HIT Team or whatever.
Koscheck on the other hand I cannot stand.
His arm was not trapped
Actually Holdin_Ropes if you re-watch the fight GSP has Hughes’ hands trapped using his feet, therefore he couldnt get them out to tap and said he tapped so the ref could do his job and stop the fight.
http://www.mmatko.com/georges-st-pierre-vs-matt-hughes-3-fight-video-ufc-79-nemesis/
“You can’t really be scared of someone who you beat.”
I don’t know if he’s scared in terms of getting physically beat, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t ever want to face GSP again b/c he doesn’t like looking bad. His legacy is secure, but a third fight with GSP would be stepping in to Ortiz-Shamrock territory.
They already had a third fight.
First fight - Hughes won via arm bar
Second fight - GSP via TKO
Third fight - GSP via arm bar
dude i met koscheck and in person he doesnt really come off like an a-hole he seemed like a cool dude..then again this was almost 2 years ago. ive read interviews where he seems like he could be a d*ck though
i found the funniest thing ever hahaha.
GSP has a secret warm up that helps him before fights.
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd72/onenutshort/nipGSP.gif
Thats some funny ass shit hah.
LMAO! What is that all about?????
Does he do that before every fight? Get them nips hard
i guess it adds more intimidation factors when you’ve got 2 eyes and 2 hard nips staring down your opponent while the ref explains the rules. hahaha.
HAHAHAAHA…where the hell and why the hell?!
Iam at work laughing my a$$ off over this. Kind of made a scen at the office! But F that. FUNNY SHIT!
We saw him do this Saturday night and couldn’t figure it out… maybe it’s a french-canadian thing…
lol no french canadian thing, maybe because when its cold the nips became hard and it hurt when you receive a shot.. i don’t know…
or maybe he thinks it’s sexy. haha.
It’s the french twist.
I was never a huge fan of Matt’s, but comments like this are yet another reason why I have so much respect for GSP. He is a classy guy and a great fighter. Much respect to GSP on his win. It was good for him to be in a battle and show that he has toughness to go along with his skills and dedication to the sport.
I know this for sure that when George gets to old like Hughes is and some other kid comes along and takes the dominant position in his division he will be respectful and classy. It is tough to come to grips with being on the decline of your career, but comments likes that are just childish.
GSP made the same kind of comments to Hughes . . . yet nobody seems to remember that.
Totally different context, you can’t compare those two comments as being the same. No one said anything becasue it was a true comment and GSP backed it up by destroying Hughes, I doubt that Hughes will back up his comments and destroy GSP.
They were comments made out of jelousy, not to hype up a future fight.
How can you not compare it? This is ridiculous as most of you bloggers act like kids when given a reasonable arguement. GSP came into the ring and instead of congratulating Hughes on a win and telling him he’d like to be his next opponent, he attacked Hughes in his moment of glory. Hughes on the other hand writes a blog on his own site for his fans to read saying that GSP looked tired in the first round and that the fight was boring but nothing actually bad about GSP and you jump his nuts. Get over yourselves and also Hughes has been a very respectful champ in all of his fights, when have you seen him bad mouth anyone after a hard fight?
It’s easy to be gracious when you’re winning lol.
That was different, GSP thought Hughes was calling him out and he apologized several times afterwards for the mistake.
he’s taking GSP down a notch because fitch put up a better fight than he (hughes) can. and this, like everything hughes says or does is typical of a narcissist.
GSP is a super athlete. When I talk about the atheleticism required to be a prize fighter in MMA, GSP is the person used as an example (he has unbelievable conditioning and is great at every facet of the game).
What a douche
I used to be a huge Matt Hughes fan but his comments here are unbelievable. I met Hughes in person and he seemed pretty nice and after his fights he seems respectful and makes no excusses, but its comments like these that make him seem like such a dick. Hughes couldn’t beat either one of those guys so why make a comment like that. And I can’t believe he didn’t think that was an exciting fight. That was a great fight, alot better than the one he put on in his last two fights!
you can see why there are so many hughes haters on this sit e. this wasnt an interview, a press conference or even some obscure reporter trying to get quick quote fromm hughes. this was his opinion posted on HIS own website. if nobodys asking, then why does he feel the need to put others down. i guess thats his christian way.
I wasn’t impressed either. GSP left himself open for the armbar like 5 times but Fitch couldn’t sink it in but B.J. will!
BJ has never armbarred anyone from his back, and he sure as heck won’t armbar GSP.
GSP sees submissions before the other guy can even get close to them. He’s also too explosive to get subbed by pretty much anyone.
Huh? It’s called ground-and-pound. Guys who are great at it like GSP, Fedor, and a prime Tito know how to not get their arm caught when they’re on top. GSP’s no Mark Coleman.
fitch just got his black belt in bjj too. a real one at that.
If he left himself open 5 times and didn’t even come close to be
