UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 9 has come to a close. The overall quality of the event easily ranks it as one of the year’s best and the main event of the evening provided all the drama and fireworks that were expected.

Despite a couple of one-sided contests, the promotion rewarded Georges “Rush” St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, as well as others, for their outstanding performances with cold hard cash.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 87:

Fight of the Night: Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch
Submission of the Night: Demian Maia
Knockout of the Night: Rob Emerson

Each fighter received $60,000 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as humanly possible.

It’s interesting that the main event took top honors. Granted the second round may have been the only one that was close, but the heart and determination of Jon Fitch was enough to impress the UFC brass - and most of the UFC fans in attendance.

Congratulations goes out to Rob Emerson for doing what no one else expected him to by knocking out Manny Gamburyan. “The Anvil” might be a lot of things, but he is not easy to finish.

The attendance at the Target Center was an impressive 15,082 with a total gate of $2.2 million - setting a new arena record that was originally held by a Billy Joel/Elton John concert.

i dont get it, at what point did “john fitch create fight of the night” sure give the money to GSP cuz he rearranged johns face but john??? he was just the punching bag. i think when both fighters are engaging and hitting eachother back and forth is when it merits such a title. props for GSP…we even complain when he dominates through a decision, i guess everyone just has very high expectations of him because hes that skilled. i know peeps wont like what im saying simply because most on this site hold john on a pedestal like he can do no wrong, but reality, he simply didnt belong in there with rush and was never even close. i hope i dont have to hear the fitch is soo dangerous saying anymore. Afterall, he did almost lose the fight before this one as well…

2008-08-10 13:33:33

I agree blah, john fitch was made into a contender fighting mediocre opponents! BJ does everything better than fitch, and GSP ko’d fitch 5 times at least, but yet it went to a decision! GSP will NEVER beat BJ!

i’m sorry but that logic makes almost no sense. plus considering GSP already did beat BJ i dunno what you’re talking about there. Don’t get me wrong i’m a penn fan too but he lost to gsp (mainly bc of conditioning which would be the same problem if they fought again)

That’s rediculous Blah, Fitch took a lot of punishment and just kept coming and kept coming, might not have been nearly exciting if Fitch just rolled over and died or ran or played it safe the whole time like clinching up. Fitch earned everything he got. He is a good fighter, and belonged to be in there with GSP more then anybody has since BJ Penn.

He didn’t keep coming, he kept not getting the fight stopped. Fitch is a boring, overrated dry-humper. He’s like Koscheck but without the freaky athletic ability.

Actually he already did beat BJ and GSPs wrestling has gone to another level since that win.

Wasn’t expecting a Emerson KO.

Maia is probably the best on the ground in MMA, will most likely win this award everytime.

Fitch has a heart of Gold. Took a hell of a beating and was still pressing forward.

lol, I said why is this fight on the main card over congo…I don’t remember saying that considering I hate manny and karo. show me where I said manny would walk through him, I believe I said he shouldn’t be on main card and never gave a prediction.
my predictions were gsp, herring and florian. I made more on those oicks last night than you made last year at mcdonalds. But lets hypothetically say I did say that, why do you care what my predictions are? I put 10k on gsp and 100 on herring. then a late 1000 on florian. seems like I did ok. Whats wrong, did your mom ask you to clean your room this morning?

Here is a copy and past of your post from the quick preview. Just proves you are a complete moron. I own my home to Kev…I don’t know if you are having mommy separation issues.

UFC 87 predictions:
I think this is the only card in a while that looks great on paper, but could go either way. It has the makings of a pretty boring night of fight!
GSP will win, I can’t see him losing, and if we’re lucky, we’ll see the exciting GSP and it will be a KO, rather than the scared of getting KO’d wrestling gsp.
I got Herring in one of two outcomes. Catching lesner with a knee when he shoots, or weathering the initial lesner flurry, and submitting him! IN a perfect world brock tries to stand with him, but I doubt it!
I think Florian will win quite easily! I think he is overall more experienced and has better skills! I’m one of the few guys who loves Kenny’s elbows (I refuse to call them Hell bows)
Manny gamburian…why is he televised other than for the guys who nut for TUF. Congo is finally fighting a stand up guy, and should have an exciting fight, and we’re stuck with Karo’s cousin (mini Karo), a bit disappointing! Manny wins!

kev, awfully sensitve, yes? Just admit that some of your picks weren’t great, enjoy that the others were, and move on.

BTW, talking about how much money you can bet demonstrates that you may not be used to having money.

so where in that sentence did I say he’d win?

always had money my friend, sorry I got defensive, the guys that tend to answer or interject rationally are my age, some pimple faced douche making fun of my picks while bagging my groceries makes me laugh! I could put my bets up every time like stinky (though I’m not on his level), problem is I gamble every day so I don’t bore you with that. Got the red sox for a 100 at +150 today -1.5 runs. If you can follow that!
sorry so sensitive, back to work tonight and a wife that doesn’t stop shopping!
when is enough enough already?? 5 coach and a loius vuitton and already talking about a new purse! I apologize guys!

I posted an apology…on edge today and lately. If I said “manny wins” my bad, I don’t like him or karo, and was rooting for him to lose. sometimes I can’t keep all these thoughts in order…an engineer, you know what I mean about so much running through your head!

nothing in the world pisses me off more than some spoiled brat who “always had money” and probably never had to work for anything in their life has the nerve to knock someone for bagging groceries.

wow your wife is with you cause you buy her shit ..that’s impressive…it’s called something else in my books though.

“momy ask you to clean your room this morning”? you kidding me you’re such a spoiled brat mommy would never ask you to clean anything…she just keeps giving you an allowance for doing nothing.

you’re a douche bag regardless how much money you have.

Does anyone else have a job or profession that they would like to share? How about how much money you all make?… I didn’t think so because it doesn’t matter, I don’t believe you when you say you are 20, 32, 98, 5 or a bagger, or a mechanic or a scientist or a teacher… get my point? It doesn’t matter so stop talking about the semantics here and get back to the world of MMA. Here’s something you all didn’t know about me, I am the one you guys pray to at night, lol and you wonder why I haven’t been answering you!

Sucks for Huerta and Florian. I mean, GSP - Fitch was amazing, but to have a fight like Huerta - Florian not get fight of the night is sort of a shame.

It did not live up to the expectations to be honest. I thought that fight would have been more. Huerta was completely outclassed.

I thought it was similar to GSP-Fitch in that regard - Huerta was definitely outclassed, but he kept coming and got hit with some big shots. I thought it was a fun fight to watch.

Yeah but the “fight of the year” expectations turned out to be far fetched. I think Huerta let some of his animosity for the UFC get in the way of his performance. I want to see Kenny Florian fight Gray Maynard next. It would be a good fight for Kenny to get by a not as dominating wrestler as Sherk. Gray last beat Edgar so he has to get a step up in competition as well.

The problem with that is the Kenny is rnked way too high in comparison to Gray Maynard. But then again, Kenny said he wanted to stay active until he gets his chance at the title after the BJ/GSP fight. But I think that they would match Kenny up with someone that is Top 10, and I don’t quite think Maynard is there yet, although close. Too badk there wasn’t someone that can fight similarly to BJ Penn to help prepare him to fight the champ…

how is maia the best on the ground in mma?

why is everyone jumping on his bandwagon and not jacare?

jacare has better bjj (has beat maia many times in straight bjj), is bigger, more explosive, has better wrestling, and better striking.

im not saying jump on the jacare bandwagon, but come on.

2008-08-10 13:19:37

I agree, mcdonald looked great and if he was as great as they said that triangle would have finished. don’t get me wrong, that was runner up to fon, but to say this guy is great is a bit premature!

jacare hasnt really fought the same level opponents as maia except mayhem and he didnt finish. Even though Jacare ran a bjj clinic on mayhem who is generally considered awesome on the ground(not by me), maia submited 3/3 of his opponents including jason mccdonald whose strength is grappling.
