The K-1 World Grand Prix 2008 took place on Saturday, August 9 from the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii in front of a live attendance of 8,807 and featured the K-1 USA Grand Prix tournament along with a handful of Superfights.

Turkish kickboxer Gokhan Saki, a last minute replacement with only four K-1 matches under his belt, shocked the fighting world by winning it all after defeating three straight challengers – all by knockout.

It was a dominating performance by the 24 year-old phenom who no doubt will be getting a lot of attention in the coming weeks.

Also on the card were American meatballs Eric “Butterbean” Esch and Wesley “Cabbage” Correira. The two behemoths faced off in the quarterfinals where the surprisingly nimble Cabbage sent Butterbean back to the pantry with a bone-crunching head kick.

Cabbage was later eliminated by Randy Kim, a replacement for tournament favorite Siala-Mou “Mighty Mo” Siligia, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injuries sustained in his quarterfinal match against Justice Smith.

A lot of fans were left wondering how things might have turned out had Mighty Mo been able to continue and possibly meet Saki in the finals.

Thanks for posting the results.

More MMA fans should watch k1. alot of transitional fighters from k1 to MMA or MMA to k1, so im not sure why its no where close to as big.

and its great to see fighters pushing there stand up technique as far as it can go since they arent sidetracked by any other fighting styles.

the shit is beautiful

its easy to see though. Cro Cops striking in k1 compared to his later days in MMA is so broad. i hope he can train his stand up like he used to and still be able to deal with wrestling and bjj

What’s TNA’s “Samoa Joe” doing in front of that crowd?

Funny, but that was the Akebono, the first western Yokozuna. He has retired from sumo, and has gotten onto the promotion side of things.
The production for Saturday’s K-1 was amazing, with the Field’s Entertainment crew sparing no expense to pull this off. 50K for the Jumbo-Tron and 60K for the ring to be shipped in at the last minute, when nothing that met their standard could be found.
Bad job of promoting the event, as promotion started about a week prior to the event.
Great night of fights, would have like to have seen Mighty Mo matched up against Cabbage or another fighter his height. Okay showing by Justice, and a shame the “The Blue-Eyed Samurai” attempted to fight injured, as the crowd really let him have it as he called a t halt to the bout as nearly as soon as it started. A who’s who in the crowd JZ, Melvin Manohoef, Cary Tagawa, and a few J-pop stars.
