Quoteworthy:

I spoke with my manager now and he said they called him and said it would depend on October’s event. I might face Mark Coleman in December, but nothing has been signed yet. He wanted to face me in November and I really wanna face him, I hope this time he doesn’t run from me. He said no to me a couple of times, but I believe now it will happen.

UFC light heavyweight contender Mauricio “Shogun” Rua talks about his desire to rematch Mark Coleman towards the end of the year. “The Hammer” defeated Rua in controversial fashion at PRIDE 31 back in 2006 when an awkward landing broke the Brazilian’s arm less than a minute into the fight.

Blowing out the same knee twice in that short of time span is freaky stuff, Shogun needs to take it as slow as possible.

At this point I would be surprised if Coleman makes it through a training camp without a serious injury, that body is destroyed.

I believe itd be at 205, Coleman is a pretty small heavyweight

In PRIDE Shogun and Coleman fought a heavyweight, it was suppose to be a warm up for Shogun so he could fight in the Openweight GP. Since Shogun is now hurt, it would be hard for him to cut weight after an injury. So this fight would be a heavyweight fight.

Yep, in MMA standards. So I’m really wonderin’ why Shogun was matched up w/ Mr. GNP. Doesn’t make sense to me. I guess the UFC is tryin’ to make it easy for RUa ‘coz of his knee.

Its because its a rematch of a fight that shogun should have won easily.

He will knock coleman out this time round. Not really the fight I want to see Shogun having though. He is much better than ‘The Hammer’.

A rematch with rampage would be much better for the both of them. It would prove Rampage is ready for a rematch with Forrest if he wins or would put Shogun closer to a rematch himself. Either way I see Forrest losing this time for sure. Shogun is waaay better than he looked in that fight.

A fight with Lyoto would be very interesting as well cos Shogun wouldn’t hang fire he’d come at him with a lot of aggression and it would be good to see how Machida deals with it.

I guess this matchup is due to a lot of the other top fighters already lined up for other fights. Either way Shogun is better than this.

You dont know what your talking about, the 1st fight went 49 seconds and Mark was getting the better of it, he took shogun down easily, stuffed all his sub attempts and the reason he broke his arm was because coleman speared him with a double ankle and lifted it, causing shogun to fall harder that he would have and at an angle. If coleman is in shape and healthy he has a good chance as anyone, especially if you consider shoguns last blowout and pride fighters in general overall drop in confidence and ability when they get in an octagon as opposed to the little ring and easier rules at pride. Mark had his 1st 8 fights in the cage.

i actually like the match up. there is bad blood between Coleman and Shogun and the Octagon is the perfect place to settle it! Also, Shogun needs a warm up fight before he starts tearing through the LHW division!

Shogun will be UFC Light heavyweight champion at some point in the next year or 2.

the fight I want to see the most is Shogun vs. Forrest 2 for the title, but I doubt Forrest will have the title long enough for Shogun to earn a shot at him.

Shogun is being fed a past his prime GnP so he can look good after coming back from that injury and that loss to Griffin.

Coleman needs to fulfill his contract so Shogun is made to order.

This fight only has ramifications if Shogun loses.

Which I highly, HIGHLY doubt.

Otherwise, I take it as a sacrificial offering from DW to Shogun.

Coleman is toast.

I have no problem with the match up. Shogun needs a warm up fight and he may as well Knock Coleman’s old ass into retirement!

This fight will be good to watch.. Bad Blood for sure in theis one.. That broken fore arm in there Pride fight was nasty.. regardless of mye not seeing Coleman..not able to beat Shogun in the octagon in there rematch..This will be a fight I will for sure want to tune into. I want to see a healthy Shogun.. and evn though Coleman the original Gnp’r age is over the top.. can make this a tuff fight if he comes in healthy.. ever since I saw ” The Smashing Machine “.. I will not count Coleman on any fight.. but in this one..Shogun will be the absolute favorite.

This is a rematch that I wish we could have seen right after they fought the first time, when Mark was not an old man. It only lasted about a minute or whatever before SHogun had that freak arm break, but it looked as if Coleman would be able to secure the take down.

Yo tambien… Contrary to popular belief, this fight makes sense to me. The UFC owes Coleman a fight, Shogun needs a win coming off an injury and a poor showing in his 1st fight, and there is some background to market this fight to the fans.

Unless you’re talking about Thiago Silva, there will NEVER be Shogun/Silva. Wandy and Shogun are like brothers and will never ever fight. Thats why Shogun never had a title shot against Wanderlei in Pride, even though he otherwise deserved it more than anyone else over there.

what a ridiculous fight!! Why on earth with the 205 division stacked are we seeing fights like this, why is coleman even mentioned there are so many fights for shogun here are a few

liddell v shogun
machida v shogun
henderson v shogun
bonner v shogun
alexander v shogun
could have had tito v shogun
vera v shogun
hammell v shogun
evans v shogun
rampage v shogun……need i go on?!
Why oh why do we have to watch through a non event like this, yeah shogun wants it cos he knows coleman is finished, if he wins it proves nothing. If he loses, he loses all credit!!

Throwing him into the competitive title mix after being injured for so long does him no favors. Dana probably wants to make him a bit of a star. He’s young, talented, and good looking and so risking a loss to Evans or Hendo or Liddel makes absolutely no sense. There’s lots of time for him to take those fights and be super competitive, right now he needs to get rid of some cage rust probably and fight someone high profile enough yet not a huge challenge. Patience, all of those great fights are going to happen. You better believe that Shogun will get a title shot as soon as he rattles off a couple of impressive wins. Unless Wandy gets there first, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him with the belt within two years or so.

This is the type of “showcase fight” that Shogun needs. It’s like when the UFC gave an up-and-coming Rich Franklin a fight with Ken Shamrock.

Comment by --utaptout--
2008-07-31 13:56:21

Interesting perspective. I don’t know if Shogun would rip through coleman the way franklin did to shammy, but I’d love to see it happen. Better yet, I’d like to see Brock Lesnar fight Shammy in a “showcase” match. I know it wouldn’t prove anything about Lesnar’s abilities but it would be fun to watch Ken get triple powerslammed. Maybe he’d learn how to keep his mouth shut after thaqt! hahahaha!

Comment by Pat
2008-07-31 15:32:17

Actually, Ken almost caught Rich with a heel hook in that fight. And Ken slipped doing a high kick before he got pounded out. Imagine the ramifications had Ken won that fight:

- We might have gotten to see Ken get destroyed by Chuck or Randy

- Rich might not have become the UFC’s MW poster boy, which might have forced them to keep Lindland to legitimize the division or move up Matt Hughes

What a joke! First, Coleman was supposed to fight Brock (a monstrous 265 lbs. after cutting weight). Now he’s going to fight Shogun (a small LHW, nowadays). It really shows what a gimme Brock was going to get. Now Shogun gets it.
