scott smith elitexc
Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith might have to change his nickname.

According to Dave Carmichael of the Carmichael Dave Show on KHTK in Sacramento, Calif., Smith broke one of his hands in the first round against Elite XC Middleweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler this past Saturday during the Elite XC: “Unfinished Business” main event.

Smith seemed to fight much more tentatively in that second round. It was a drastic departure from the almost reckless, caution-to-the-wind strategy he used in the first fight and through most of the first round of this rematch.

He said after the fight that he was waiting on referee Herb Dean to stop the action to check on the gash on top of Lawler’s head. His exact words were that he was, “waiting for someone else to end the fight.”

Perhaps Smith did feel like the blood pouring from Lawler’s skull was going to be enough to get a doctor stoppage eventually, but with hindsight being 20/20, maybe a broken hand was more to blame for Smith’s cautious approach.

Either way, Lawler took advantage of an inactive Scott Smith by turning up the aggression and ending the fight himself before the cut on his head ever became a factor. And in the process he put an end to the Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith saga … for now.

There’s no word on how long this injury will keep him out of action, but broken hands aren’t exactly rare in this sport. He is reportedly scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday.

I’m sick of hearing about that cut. It was no where near the eyes, and wasn’t affecting his vision or was it a threat to his eyes. VERY rarely will a fight be stopped due to cut not either on top of eye or where blod is flowing into the eye. this cut was on top of his head. No skull was showing! Bottom line in my opinion, Lawler took smith lightly the first time around and came in to finish this fight.
I for one will bet that Shamrock (old, over the hill, etc.) will destroy Robbie lawler,!
I want to see Lawler/Diaz 2, except this time have Diaz work his magic on the groundand submit him!
LE/Silva
Diaz/BJ
Shields?GSP also fights I’d like to see!
Before you say keep dreaming John, these “cross-promtions (with UFC) WILL happen! Dana is starting to lose guys, and he’s a business man first and foremost. If there is lots of money in these “mega fight” (and there are plenty more) he will move forward and promote them!

scott smith plays possom all the time he gets hit and acts like he is really “rocked” and then takes advantage… that is an MMA rule .. you can not fake an injury..

Lawler was dancing really dumb after he won, way to much punches to the head.

Smith needs to work on his gut. Everytime he gets hit in the gut hes done! Anybody that has seen his fights knows that he takes a good punch to the face. But get him in the gut and its over!

KEVIN, the only problem I see for Dana to cross promote is this –

How many fans of EliteXC that would PURCHASE a PPV aren’t already fans of the UFC that watch all the PPV’s?

My guess would be close to 99%. I don’t think that bringing in anyone from EliteXC, outside of Kimbo Slice, would raise the UFC’s PPV numbers.

2008-07-28 15:48:03

good point mike, thats why they need an HBO or FOX deal!

Dana is a business man true enough.

Dana co-promote?, unlikely.

What is for sure is Dana and Zuffa like 100% of the profits. That in itself would be enough to rule out co-promotion.

If Dana started losing fighters at a worrying level, he’d up their pay to Affliction’s level to keep them way before he would ever consider co-promoting.

its going to be a long time before dana cross promotes if ever. the only way i see him doing it is if another org catches up or passes the ufc, and thats going to take a long time.

Come on Kevin, that was the most unrealistic statement that I read on here all day. AS much as I would love to see cross promotion involving the UFC, I promise you that it wont be happening anytime soon…. Its years away still, if it even happens at all!

U can attack me personally all u want, you claim to be making realistic statements, but I dont see your UFC cross promotion statement to be realistic, nor do I see your pipe DReam of Diaz moving up to middleweight to fight Lawler for a second time.

Sorry I would like to see both scenario’s happen, but they are not realistic. THe UFC did not cross promote with Pride, and Pride was a bigger company at the time. It will take years before an other organization reaches the level Pride was at in its GLory Days. There WONT be any cross promotions involving the UFC, at least not for a couple of years!

YOu think I wouldnt like to see UFC cross promote with EliteXC, DREAM, or Affliction? I would love it, but I only DReam at Night, right now, we are talking reality here!

That is a piss poor excuse. The cut was on top of lawler’s head and was not even that bad. I cant even beleive a fighter said that he was waiting for the ref to stop the fight.

He just didnt want to admit that he lost to a better fighter

Comment by Ade

I didn’t get the impression he was making an excuse, he was just hoping that he would get the win because of the cut, because he knew he could not the fight with a broken hand.

Here you go linx: took me all of 30 seconds to find! Google speaks portugese by the way! LOL just kidding buddy!
Fights that are generally considered by consensus to be worked or thrown:

Oleg Taktarov vs. Anthony Macias (UFC VI) – According to Macias, Buddy Albin the local site promoter and manager of both fighters threatened that Macias’ career would be over unless he took a dive against Oleg. Oleg was unware of this. Macias went on to win titles in several Albin-promoted events. Buddy Albin was a total sleeze bag BTW.

Dan Severn vs. Mitsuhiro Matsunaga (U-Japan) – Severn denies that his fight against pro wrestler Matsunaga was worked, but watching the fight itself leaves little doubt and the general consensus is that this was a worked fight.

Kimo vs Kazushi Sakuraba (S-Cup) – This was billed as a legit NHB fight on a Shootboxing card, but it turns out it was not legit (another NHB fight on the card, M. Illioukhin vs Mestre Hulk was legit). The fight looks very real and Kimo lands a number of really solid shots and headbutts. There are several versions of what took place in this fight, but perhaps the closest thing to the truth is the version that has Sakuraba carrying Kimo for most of the fight before finally taking a dive without Kimo’s knowledge. That would explain Kimo throwing real shots and Sak playing defense the whole time and also the fact that Kimo vehemently (and convincingly) insists it was legit, yet Sakuraba has said on several occasions that his first shoot MMA fight was the Conan Silviera fight, not the Kimo fight.

Murakami Kazunari vs. John Dixon (Pride 1) – It was well-known in the fight community even before the first Pride took place that the Kazunari-Dixon and Kitao-Jones fights would be works. Pride’s initial intent was to showcase different types of fights in addition to NHB – full contact karate, kickboxing and also shoot-style works like RINGS and PWFG. Later Pride would be more secretive about its worked fights.

Koji Kitao vs Nathan Jones (Pride 1) – See above.

Nobuhiko Takada vs. Kyle Sturgeon (Pride 3) – All of Takadas “wins” were blatant works. This is pretty much common knowledge.

Nobuhiko Takada vs. Mark Coleman (Pride 5) – See above.

Nobuhiko Takada vs. Alexander Otsuka (Pride 7) – See above.

Fights that are suspected of being works but there is no consensus agreement:

Don Frye vs. Mark Hall 3 (Ultimate Ultimate 2) – Several months after the fact Hall claimed that in the locker room before the match Frye had offered him $50,000 to take a dive so he would be fresh when he fought Tank in the finals (Frye had had a grueling match with Goodridge in the opening round and was exhausted). Hall came out with his accusations because, he said, Frye never paid him. Frye vehemently denied it and said Hall was a disturbed individual. Hall was blacklisted by the fight community and never fought again. The jury is still out on this one.

Naoya Ogawa vs. Gary Goodridge (Pride 6) – Anytime a pro wrestler (other than Sak) gets a win in Pride people will claim it was a work. Gary denies this was a work but many people suspect it was. Hard to tell for sure.

Naoya Ogawa vs. Masaaki Sataki (Pride 11) – See above.

Vitor Belfort vs. Joe Charles (Ultimate Japan 1) – Vitor was sick and refused to fight unless he was able to pick his opponent. He chose Charles who was one of his training partners at the time. No strikes were thrown in what turned out to be a grappling match, with Vitor winning by armbar. Whether this was a worked fight or they simply had a gentleman’s agreement not to strike is open to question.

Mark Schultz vs. Leopoldo Montenegro (Jungle Fight 1) – Schultz claims this was work but everyone else involved denies it. There have been questions about some of Montenegro’s other fights in the Inoki run promotion as well.

Kevin, I answered this in the other thread, but I’ll past it here as well:

I actually watched the Takada vs Coleman fight and Otsuka fights unfortunately, and they were definitely fixed, even the announcers here in Brazil were laughing as the fight went along. with that said, those other ones you mentioned I either haven’t watched or just don’t remember. Still, even if they were in fact fixed, they were done a long, LONG… time ago, and many in smaller organizations aside from Pride/UFC. How come this list doesn’t have anything from recent events? this doesn’t help you and many others that say some fights are fixed, this list is old and there nothing recent…

Hope you get better BTW :)

2008-07-28 15:45:34

thanks buddy, feeling about 70% right now, got to work tonight! Just can’t sleep and everything right down to my knuckles are sore! I know they are old, I just said you’re naive to think fights aren’t worked…see kimbo having guys tap on the way down after not getting hit or taking 2 minutes of elbows with no stoppage, then a win when thompson wasn’t even hurt!

yes it’s an old list, but you guys said there ARE NO WORKED FIGHTS. I just disagreed and backed it up! NO big deal, just naive to think a company that has millions riding on a guy (kimbo) would want him to lose. The UFC doesn’t need Lesner, and he wants top comp., that will test him!

i myself don’t want to say any fight is fixed because it tarnishes the reputation of MMA in general, not just EliteXC. I’d also like to think that the fighters, as well as the athletic commissions have safeguards in place so that its impossible for a fix to take place. but on the other hand, i know its naive to think that money isn’t going to sway people or make them look the other way. the kimbo/thompson fight DID look like a fix, as did kimbo’s first fight, because the guy was going down from an elbow to the shoulder. then again maybe the dude was just that intimidated by Kimbo? who knows.

i prefer to reserve judgement at this point until there is more than just speculation and hearsay.

The hand definately explains his performane in the 2cnd he was a totally different fighter. I look foward to seeing scott in action again

we heard the same thing come from vera when he broke his hand against sylvia. if u break get hurt, u gotta make adjustments. u gotta use the other one, use ur kicks more. if anything breaking young hand should make you want to try to finish the fite as early as possible. im sure no fiter thinks that way but no need to lay back and keep taking punishment. doesnt really make sense.

No man when you break your hand you want to pull out of the fight. There is no shame in losing a fight to injury. If stops using that hand he’ll have distinct disadvantage and if he keeps using it he risks injuring it beyond repair. Thats why he went crazy with those elbows and played the drums on Lawlers head. The only thing is he should have been throwing those knees on Lawlwer with him being the bigger guy.
