cbs saturday night fights
Before its second show was even in the books, Elite XC announced that it will return to the CBS airwaves at the Bank Atlantic Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on October 4.

And the promotion will once again trot out its big guns like in the network television debut on May 31.

Hometown star Kimbo Slice will return to action, as well as the “female face of MMA,” Gina Carano. Opponents were not revealed or confirmed last night, however, it’s likely that “Conviction” will clash with Cristiane Cyborg — the Brazilian terror who thrashed Shayna Baszler with a relentless attack to kick-off the “Unfinished Business” show on CBS.

In fact, it’s possible that Carano and Cyborg will compete for the first-ever Elite XC female championship belt.

Slice has been rumored to take on Brett “The Grim” Rogers ever since the dust up at the “Primetime” post-fight press conference. However, word surrounding that match up has quieted ever since Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw’s role has diminished — he was the one who essentially said it was going to happen.

Now it’s anyone’s guess.

Of course, there are several other showdowns possible for the card, including Frank Shamrock returning to action to challenge Robbie Lawler for his 185-pound crown. Prior to the show last night, we detailed several other possibilities for October right here.

Regardless, Elite XC — as promised — delivered a tight show last night that was far more impressive than its first attempt. Of course, the ratings will likely not mirror those of the debut because of a lack of starpower, but overall the production and level of fights last night was far superior.

Let’s hope the promotion can keep it up as it once again heads to Florida at the Bank Atlantic Center — a venue that can pack-in more than 22,000 rabid mixed martial arts fans.

I am not gonna complain about last nights event but I would like to see the fights be more competitive. I dont usually like to watch the ladies fight but I enjoyed the fight last night(probably the best of the night). I Cant wait to see Carano vs Cyborg now.

I think Gina will be fighting Kelly Kobald in October. When she wins, they’ll give her The Cyborg. I’m not looking forward to it — I wouldn’t want to see Gina’s pretty face get smashed.

I thought that Shamrock was out of business for awhile after all the damage that he took from Cung Le? I agree that the production was much easier to take (not as tacky). Seriously though, as far as their next show goes, I don’t think that Kevin Ferguson will turn out to be quite the draw that he was in May. They desperately need new blood. Does anyone know how many more fights Shields has on his contract? It seems to me that he wouldn’t mind jumping to the UFC (as they all would if they are being honest) now that he has “raised his profile” and earned himself some dollars. Shields and Lawler are really good fighters. I’d put Shields in the top 6 – 8 and Lawler in the top 15 in their respective weight classes. Unfortunately for Elite XC, neither one is particularly marketable to the “casual” fan. I still think that the WEC is number two in North America in terms of talent (e.g., Faber, Torres, Condit, Filho, Stann, Varner …) IMHO the WEC roster overall is superior to EliteXC’s.

shields is with elite for the long term, and I don’t think lawler is that great! He’s top of the B level guys in elite, bit who is scott smith? the guy who KO’d pete sell? I wouldn’t mind seeing a lwler/Diaz rematch! If Diaz were smart, he takes him down and submits him. He needs to use his jits more and stop worrying about exciting fans with his average boxing!

Kevin: Be real, NO way Diaz is moving up to middleweight and Lawler is not moving down, y would he is middleweight champion. U can forget about that fight.

I would like to see Cung Le vs. Lawler!

I am a huge NICK Diaz fan, good luck trying to get me to diminish one of his wins by calling him lucky! I just doubt that we will ever see Nick fighting above welterweight!

I enjoyed everything about last night’s action. If I had one complaint, it would probably be only showing 4 fights, this could be a compliment since they left me wanting more. I like Shields calling out GSP or fitch, but if he was so concerned about fighting the best, maybe he shouldn’t have signed a contract extension knowing UFC doesn’t cross promote. Two of my favorite fighters are Nick Diaz and BJ penn, and I think that would be a great match up, neither gets KO’d and both are wizards on the ground. BJ takes it, but it would be great. At some point, I hope dada white sees where mma has gone (because of him), and helps propel the sport into the next level…he’d have to cross promote, but think of the math ups out there and money that could be made via ppv’s with the worlds best fighting on a mega card. John, I totally agree, big foot is inconsistent, not average, that was a great assessment, I apologize! Overall (with exception of Fedor, there I said it John), elite’s shorter show was 10 times better than the affliction show. Sponsors: burger king, rock star another huge one that slipped my mind! Watch for a UFC TV deal soon. And affliction, sponsored by affliction clothing needs some sponsors!

Guaranteed Kimbo gets his easiest opponent yet, especialy after the weak numbers it did on the 26th.

I am thinking somewhere along the lines of another Ray Mercer or someone in teh late 40’s and really out of shape that wasnt even good 10 or 15 years ago. And definitely someone who has no ground skills at all and a very weak chin.
