ufc fight night 14 fighter paydays
MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) has received the fighter payouts for UFC Fight Night 14: “Silva vs. Irvin” from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for the Spike TV event held on July 19 from “The Pearl” at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

And UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was rewarded handsomely for his “favor” to move up to light heavyweight, earning a guaranteed $200,000. Brandon Vera – the other Octagon veteran who made his 205-pound debut – matched the “Spider’s” purse for his unanimous decision win over Reese Andy.

There aren’t many salary surprises on other than that – it all seems to look somewhat normal. Of course, there are several newcomers who earned the minimum for their participation on the card, which was put together on short notice to counter the Affliction: “Banned” pay-per-view (PPV) that same night.

Here are all the UFC Fight Night 14 payouts:

Anderson Silva — $200,000
James Irvin — $20,000
Silva defeated Irvin via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Brandon Vera — $200,000 ($100,000 to show, $100,000 to win)
Reese Andy — $15,000
Vera defeated Andy via unanimous decision

Frank Edgar — $26,000 ($13,000 to show, $13,000 to win)
Hermes Franca — $17,000
Edgar defeated Franca via unanimous decision

Cain Velasquez — $14,000 ($7,000 to show, $7,000 to win)
Jake O’Brien — $11,000
Velasquez defeated O’Brien via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Kevin Burns — $10,000 ($5,000 to show, $5,000 to win)
Anthony Johnson — $9,000
Burns defeated Johnson via technical knockout in round three

CB Dollaway — $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Jesse Taylor — $8,000
Dollaway defeated Taylor via submission (choke) in round one

Tim Credeur — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Cale Yarbrough — $8,000
Credeur defeated Yarbrough via technical knockout in round one

Rory Markham — $12,000 ($6,000 to show, $6,000 to win)
Brodie Farber — $3,000
Markham defeated Farber via knockout (head kick) in round one

Nate Loughran — $8,000 ($4,000 to show, $4,000 to win)
Johnny Rees — $4,000
Loughran defeated Rees via submission (triangle choke) in round one

Brad Blackburn — $10,000 ($5,000 to show, $5,000 to win)
James Giboo — $3,000
Blackburn defeated Giboo via technical knockout (strikes) in round two

Shannon Gugerty — $6,000 ($3,000 to show, $3,000 to win)
Dale Hartt — $3,000
Gugerty defeated Hartt via submission (rear naked choke) in round one

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

For example, the UFC often hands out extra cash for “Fight of the Night,” “Knockout of the Night” and “Submission of the Night.” To check out these figures for UFC Fight Night 14 go here.

The total base fighter payroll for UFC Fight Night 14 was $623,000.

**UPDATED:
Vera is/was one of my favorite fighters, he isn’t earning the 200k!!
I’d pay whatever to see silva/fedor at 205!

MONDAY MORNING CONVERSATION WITH KEVIN:
I would have to say that p4p, I’m the most hated guy on this site. (maybe second to John). I accept this title, but sometimes wonder why. I think it’s because my unbiased and strong opinions, and the fact that I actually have a clue may intimidate people. I’m sorry, I’m not an elitist, just call it as I see it, and have no problem keeping it real. I challenge anyone to trackback and find me upset after a PPV. I have NEVER come away upset after a ppv. I’ve defended ppv’s that everyone else hasn’t liked.
.
I was so pumped for affliction that in the weeks leading up to it, I didn’t let it be known how pumped I really was. I thought (and still think) that financially they will fail, but the names were enough. Man was I disappointed. I said friday, that even though the fights seem to be lopsided, maybe that will be a positive and lead to some excitement. WRONG!! Anyone who enjoyed affliction, I want some of what you are on! John, Fedor did not carry the show (I love Fedor, but am convinced you would swallow his load and enjoy it if given the opportunity).
>
-Big John, Glazer and Kurt Angle were terrible as announcers. Angle talking about all his training partners fighting was sickening, the only question I had was if he trains with all these guys, why isn’t he a better fighter. Yes guys, I realize it was Trigg, he’s a dead on look a like of kurt angle.
-I stated friday tim’s only chance was to stick the jab and use his reach. Him clinching with a sambo/judo fighter of fedor’s abilities is as smart as going to your local brothel and not using a condom.
-AA was by far the fight of the night, but Ben Rothwell is way over rated!
-the highlight to me was seeing Glazer get made up! I realize they all wear make up, but seeing him standing there getting powdered was great!
As far as the UFC goes, Vera looked like crap and who wasn’t expecting silva to win.
#
As far as future match ups, I’d much rather see AA/ Fedor than Randy, and quite frankly, no one at HW will beat Fedor. I think there are more interesting matches for Fedor at LHW. He could definitely cut 25 pounds! I also think Anderson Silva/Forrest Griffon is the match up best suited for the UFC. Don’t start with the holding up belt arguments, I want to see the best fights, I could care less about the belts. All the best matches are guys going up and down.
GSP/BJ
GSP/Silva
Silva/any top LHW.

kevin, apparently we have a problem here. Either the above individuals are not smart enough to figure out how to use a mouse and scroll down (if they don’t like your comments) or are not strong enough to use said mouse. Guys, normally the reason to post the same things multiple times is b/c mania is so on top of things, that the thread you put it on gets sent quickly to the second page (where few people will continue to post). As for “hijacking threads”, if the person who originally commented said something of worth, people will continue to respond, whether someone hijacks it or not. Summation: if you don’t like someone in particulars posts, scroll down and don’t read them. Trust me, it’s not difficult.

In his next fight there should be no excuses and a better opponent. Step up or move on Vera. I used to fight and I remember my first drop to 155. I didn’t feel bad until round two and the wind was just sucked out of me. It had nothing to do with my opponent at all so we will see if he can get it together.

James, I’ll put on a sauna suit, get on the treadmill then hit the weights. Next day i’m around 5 pounds lighter. Vera has pros around him that do it better. So again excuses! excuses! excuses! Here’s two novel ideas for Vera, so he can earn his pay next time:

1. Make a test cut or two to see how it affects you.

2. Listen again (you were there) to the UFN post-fight news conference when Anderson Silva talks about the difference between his walking around weight and fight weight (220 to 185). I haven’t seen him hanging on anyone or loping around the cage.

You can be lots of things in this sport, but boring isn’t one of them. Vera dominated R1 in many regards, but he got conservative, got tired, and decided to wait for a decision.

Comment by BNF
2008-07-21 13:11:02

Drop Vera??? He really needed the win so he fought a little conservative. He also had not cut weight in something like 8 years. That was his first attempt and on fairly short notice. He said he felt very tired in the 2nd round. You will see a different Vera in his next fight. The cut will be much easier for him. Joe Silva needs to put him in with a striker so he doesn’t have to worry about getting taken down the whole fight and can let his kicks go more frequently.

Comment by chefdaddy
2008-07-21 13:23:40

Not giving excuses, but I’ve had to cut weight before (a lifetime ago) and it is F’ing hard! It does leave you drained if you’re not used to doing it, on the flip side he IS a pro fighter, and it’s part of the job. Some people can do it, for others it just downright sucks. Staying in great shape can be completely exhausting!

It is a science in itself. His body needs to get used to it. Did he even do a pratice cut before the fight? Maybe he needs to hire someone better to help him next time. He weighed in at 204, so I really think he over did it.

I watched Affliction the next day online. Can’t say much about the production since I watched it on the computer. The camera looked a little far away. Seemed like a good show. Lots of HW and that has never been my favorite. Overall good and I will buy the next one for sure.

YOU guys are being way too hard on Vera. He lost to Tim sylvia and Fabricio Werdum, who both were supposed to beat him. He didnt have the most exciting fight, but when is grappler vs, Striker ever a good fight when the wrestler is 1 dimensional? NEVER!!!!! U saw almeida vs. Cote right? BORING!!!! It was just terrible matchmaking by Joe Silva. Vera should have to at least give his win bonus back.

I expect better things from him in the next fight if Joe Silva gets his head out of his ass and matches him up against someone good.

The UFN Main Event should have been Vera vs. THe Spider!
and then Reese vs. Irvin….uFC messed it up, and they didnt really want to give us the big fight. THey just wanted to give the minimum that they could to pry fanms away from ordering affliction!

All valid points. But after wanting to see Vera fight at 205 for quite some time now, bottom line, it was still a sub-par performance from him that made for a boring fight. Forget another weight cut - let him stay at 265. Hey, if the UFC finalizes their purchase of IFL(which they might have done already since they showed some IFL clips for Reese Andy) and retains most of its roster, maybe they can put Vera up against IFL HW champ Roy Nelson. Nelson has even referred to Vera as a ‘PR machine heavyweight’ I believe. Might make for an explosive matchup.

I am tired of people bitching about Burns. Dude impressed me and even though it should have been ruled a NC there is no way he should have been DQ’ed. You are the one being ridiculous jakizzle, Burns caught him in the eye on an uppercut and Mazz thought he dropped him. I bet you were all over the message boards bitching about Rampage too. Fights done, get over it.

Comment by O damn he got caught
2008-07-21 13:45:25

First off Burns didn’t catch him with any uppercut period, he stuck him in the eye with his left hand “palm jab”, then barely grazed Rumble with an uppercut. Secondly that was about the 4th time the eye poke happened and he’d already had a warning, DQ is what should have happened and him winning via tko is absolutley outrageous, you can get off the crack or whatever else your smoking, that was an absolutley horrid decision.

Comment by Pat
2008-07-21 13:55:41

What the heck were you watching? Burns clearly poked Rumble deep in the eye with his finger jab, and then threw a grazing uppercut after the fact. The uppercut is not what caused Rumble to drop like bricks and scream.

Comment by James S
2008-07-21 14:02:06

I agree. But as a plus, Burns showed that rumble is currently way over hyped on this site. Rumbles stand up is amazing, as long as he is fighting Tommy Speers. He is quick and hits hard, but anyone with a decent mma stand up game should be able to hang with him.

Rumble was beating Pokey all over the cage. He was tooling him in the stand-up and taking him down whenever he felt like it. Pokey’s only answer was to go Captain Insane-O on him.

Comment by OJR
2008-07-21 16:08:21

It should have been ruled a no contest.

Burns had no intention of poking Johnson in the eye.

But he effectively ended the fight because of it.

Bad, bad decision…

It doesn’t matter that it was accidental. He was already warned. Fighters get DQ’d for multiple infractions like headbutting, strikes to the groin or to the back of the head, whether or not it’s intentional. An eye poke is no different.

Comment by GodDamnMike
2008-07-21 14:43:52

DQ for sure. that was the 4th finger poke to the eye.
That would be the first ever TKO uppercut that the guy fell over screaming and holding his eyeball. If it were a connected uppercut, Rumble would have a) taken it, and kept fighting or b) been on his ass with sustained uppercut damage. Not screaming, hoping he’ll ever see outta that eye again! Really bad call.

Comment by Justin
2008-07-21 17:59:25

from the refs point of view at the time it looked like the upper cut dropped him, that was my first thought watching the fight. ufc doesn’t use replay like the nfl, doesn’t over turn the decision the ref made to stop the fight because of the replay.. get over it! may not have been the right decision but they dont use the replay to over turn calls so drop it

Is anyone else upset by the fact that Anderson Silva, the best fighter in the world, only made 200k? Fedor probably got a couple million for his few seconds of work and chuck makes 500k+ when he loses, which is pretty often lately. Now I understand why Silva wanted to make the jump to boxing. I don’t expect him to re-sign with the UFC.

It was rumored that Fedor was fighting for 800,000. Not sure about any bonuses.

Unfortunately Silva is still not very marketable. The UFC pays you based on how much money you can make them. He is getting more well known and as his legend continues to grow he will become more marketable and thus make more money.

Don’t forget Chuck makes 500k plus a peice of the PPV buys.

Anderson Silva should do himself a favor and learn some freaking English.

I think Anderson was signed to a long-term contract. UFC contracts are like cellphone plans. They make sense at first, but once you realize you could get a better deal, it’s too late and you’re still locked up. It’s not like boxing where a fighter negotiates pay for each individual fight.

it goes both way, gonzaga and vera signed their contracts when they were at the top and now gonzaga gets 100k to fight in the unaired prelims..

Timing is so important when going in to negotiate a fight contract. Gonzaga renegotiated right after the highlight real KO of Cro Cop if im not mistaken. Then was pounded by Couture and Werdum.

Don’t you worry about Silva. I GUARANTEE that Dana gave him a very nice under the table bonus. Dana needed a headliner for this fight to counter Affliction and I’m sure he made it very, very lucrative.

Does anyone else agree that Anderson silva is really unpaid… he’s the best fight the ufc has literally. and just because he isn’t as big of a draw like chuck, he should still get alot more… that bum of a loser Brock lesnor got like 500k or something, and thats just pathetic. i dont’ care how much of a star he was in WWE..

Lesnar get 250K to show per fight.

I would like to see Silva make more but he needs to learn English, and maybe beat some dude up on the internet.

Did Silva make 200k including his win bonus or are you just not showing his bonus? No way Vera should make as much as Silva.

I don’t believe the weight cutting made Vera perform so painfully. Bisping looked great on his MW debut. Kenny Florian is awesome 30 pounds lighter than he was on TUF 1 (ok, people will say that Florian is a natural LW who was fighting way overweight, but Vera is a natural LHW). Silva fought as WW in Brazil and as a LHW in Japan. Pro fighters have to be able to cut weight with no problem, after all it’s part of their job. I’m starting to think he’s overrated. I’d like to see Shogun and Vera next. Vera didn’t do well against top competition as HW, let’s see how he does against a top LHW.

Esiest money Vera will ever win. 200k for that, bulls***

I’d give Markham a special bonus for the most spectacular knockout of the night.

200k for Anderson? Spider always put up a good show, he deserve way more than that. and Vera didn’t fight like a 200k fighter, i would pay him like 75k - 90k for that lousy fight he threw but it actually depends on the contract.

ABOUT TIME THAT SILVA IS MAKING 200K.. HE DESERVES THAT AT LEAST. VERA = OVERPAID! HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAID 100K MAX, BASED ON HIS PERFORMANCE.. $50K.

ALL I HEAR FROM VERA IS EXCUSES. HIS FIGHT AGAINST WERDUM, IM GLAD HE DIDNT WIN. AND NOW THIS DISAPPOINTMENT… PLEASE! STOP WITH THE EXCUSES AND BE THE EXCITING FIGHT THAT WE ONCE KNEW. HE SHOULD HAVE KICKED ANDYS HEAD OFF!!
