yushin okami
Top middleweight contender Yushin Okami has suffered another hand injury — this time in training — and will more than likely be unable to challenge 185-pound champion Anderson Silva anytime soon, according to MMARated.com.

“Thunder” initially broke his hand against Evan Tanner at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion” — a fight the Japanese import won via crushing knockout. There’s currently no word on whether or not this is a fresh break or if he re-aggravated the existing damage.

The tentative plan was to pit Okami against Silva as soon as UFC 88: “Breakthrough” on September 6 if the “Spider” escaped his non-title light heavyweight fight tonight with James Irvin injury-free. Patrick Cote would then take on the winner of that match in late 2008.

Now it seems that the “Predator” may have leapfrogged Okami — the last man to deal Silva a loss (albeit disqualification — for a chance to next take on the feared Brazilian striker.

Good luck, Patrick.

In the Anderson Silva interview on mmarated.com…..Anderson says that he is fighting in September. It is the interview in Portuguese. There are 2 of them. The one in Portuguese is translated in subtitle(English). He makes a reference to the “Septmeber” fight.

So, looks like Cote gets his ass beating sooner than anticipated. RIP Cote :(

I want to see Fedor vs. Anderson Silva. Seriously. Why all the talk about Couture vs. Fedor. Couture got KTFO by Liddell two times and Liddell would get KTFO by Anderson. Fedor probably walks around at 240 and Anderson walks around at 215-220. Anderson might finally have to break a sweat.

Patrik is going to get picked apart! This will probably be more of an exciting fight then it would have been against Okami, but I think okami is with out a doubt, a more dangerous fighter (and more well rounded) than Cote. Does it really matter who Silva faces at 185?

I promise it will be another 1st round or early 2nd round KO for the Spider.

Hopefully he doesnt get banged up by Irvin so we can see this fight in September….wait, Its not a guarantee that Cote would even accept or be ready to fight in September, after all he just fought in July, then agaion he did not take an punishment from almeida!

Patrik thought he would be fighting in December or early next year, time for him to get off his ass and start training because If Silva is ready to go, the UFC wont sit aropund and wait for Cote! I could see him getting leapfrogged as well if he isnt ready to go when Silva is!

I fear for Cote’s safety. I guarantee you that he is scared out of his mind right now. NOBODY can stand up to Anderson. Maybe after he cleans out the LHW division Dana will ask him to move up to Heavyweight.

If he gets Anderson, after this fight, anderson has to cut weight, we might see that happen, I doupt it, but we can wish.

actually anderson is always around 210 before he starts to cut for 185! so there wont be a difference

The only way I want to see Silva lose is if the guy who beats him is actually better than him. Its funny that anyone we can think of to beat the guy really only has a punchers chance at taking him out. I think that if you were a big fan of Franklin’s a lot of those guys have some pent up hate towards Silva.

Cote would have to get a REALLY lucky punch in. He is quite simply not well rounded enough to take Silva, not by a long shot.

Define “Lucky Punch”? i don’t understand how it could be LUCK if the person whos throwin it have every intention on punchin… i’ve always hated the term “Lucky Punch”.

I understand what you’re saying Orgasmo (great movie by the way), and I normally agree with you. If a fighter throws a punch, they have every intention of landing said punch and damaging an opponent. However, I was just using it as a figure of speech.

He’s a lucky guy. Look how lucky he was to not get submitted be Almieda. He was also lucky to submit Jason Macdonald. Cote might not be the most well rounded fighter, but he isn’t just a boxer either (like so many seem to think). Cote has skin of leather (i’ve never seen him cut). He has a chin of granite ( i’ve never seen him even rocked). Lastly he is a master at avoiding damage (however, The Spider is a master at inflicting damage lol). I find it hard to think anyone at 185 could beat Silva, but I think The Preditor will last longer than any before him did.

This sucks. Okami i think has the best shot against silva, just b/c of his size and ground game. Dont care if people think he’s a boring fighter, he gets the job done. Sick of hearing people say that about him especially after the way he finished off Evan Tanner. No offense to Patrick Cote, but i dont give him a chance against silva unless he can really take a ton of hard shots. If cote does get the next shot, he better really step up in training b/c the way he looked in his last fight, will not get it done at all.

Man!!If Okami breaks his hand in training, then what more could we expect if the Spider breaks him apart, right??!!

Cote can definitely take a shot. Mcfedries hammered him a good one and it didn’t even faze him. Can he take several shots from Silva in quick succession? Now that might be a different story. His chin will be TRUELY tested this time for sure. You’re not going to beat Silva with skill, so having one hell of a chin and KO power, is your best bet.

almeida was dead tired and he is not the striker around here.

cotè spent the entire fight in front of a lower level kickboxer, who was obviously way too tired to take him down, without doing a damn thing.

There is no such thing as lucky shots. Cote has 50% T(KO) victories, so if he does some how win, it DEFINITELY won’t be luck.

I can agree with this. Its unfortunate that Okami will not be fighting sooner but with two more fights for Silva both with stand up fighters I think this is a good thing for Okami. He’ll get to see that Silva can beat down a bigger man at 205 for striking and whip on the solid striker in Cote. It’ll remind Okami not to try and stand with Silva I’m hoping. I think Okami is the guy who can upset Silva but if he doesn’t Hendo seems like the only fight left for Silva at that weight class. Although if Bisbing does get through Leben he could be a fight or so away from a perspective title shot as well.

I will be going to the Chicago event and wouldn’t mind seeing Silva live but Okami Silva was what I was really hoping for. Cote Silva doesn’t seem very headliner worthy but then again they have been doing a great job with the under cards lately so I’m sure they can add a few fights onto the card to make it worth it to the Chicago fans

Man, Okami must feel pissed at himself. It took him so long to get the title shot and now he has to bail out because of such nuisance. And as sharp as Cote looks these days, he’s still no match for the Spider.

Patrick Cote is going to Beat Silva. Patrick Cote, just has a chin like a champion. People don’t say ” Oh Chris Leben has a chin and look what Silva did to him”
1. When Chris Leben fought Patrick Cote, Cote rocked leben and dropped Leben with punches and a punch. Leben never rocked Patrick Cote. Also Patrick Cote was robbed from that decision..the UFC tries to boost the reality guys because they are more marketable then newcomers
Cote has a the strongest chin in the middleweight devision.
I’m going with Patrick Cote if he fights Anderson…I just think it’s his time.
everyone knows Anderson Silva is a phenomenal striker.. but we have got to see him in action and so i believe fighters now have more of an understanding of what silva is capable, prior to when he first entered.

I’m also going with The Sandman tonight …come on SANDMAN!!!

how can you not be impressed with Cote? he avoided being submitted from Almeida a world champion with jiu jitsu..also his display against mcfedries or when he knocked out Kendall. or when he fought Tito..dude ate albow after elbow and hung in like a champ. also when he fought tito and they were standing for that short while in the 1st and in the 3rd..he was the better striker.
I’m happy that this fight is happening sooner then later.
his only shitty performance was against Travis ” Gasout ” Lutter

He punches hard and has a solid chin. His boxing isn’t that sharp, his ground game is unrefined and Almeida was gassed the whole fight, I could have avoided his submissions in that fight. Cote has some good natural abilities, but is not well refined enough to take on a guy like Silva.

Comment by Gord
2008-07-23 00:26:40

That’s right, Cote GASSED Almeida. BJJ is as much about defence as it is about offence. That fight showed how much Cote’s ground game has improved. As far as MMA boxing goes, his boxing is very sharp (more importantly, it’s effective). Way better than most.

Silva still has not convinced me he is the fighter most people say he is. When Hendo fights Silva again he will stick to the game plan , smother Silva and win convincingly . I like Cote and believe he is very underrated . Cote got burned in a lot of his fights which he should have won, Has an iron chin and a scary right hand. I believe he has seen enough of Silva to know how to prepare.I give Cote a great shot and think he will surprise most MMA fans.
