affliction banned fight card
There’s a general consensus among mixed martial arts fans who typically pony up $40 to watch a pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast that he or she should be entitled to see all the fights on the card.

That doesn’t usually happen because of time restraints and other “in show” productions such as fight previews, interviews, commercials for upcoming shows, ring entrances and so on.

However, Affliction will look to buck that trend with its debut event dubbed “Banned,” which will air for free on Fox Sports Net in the United States at 8 p.m. ET and at the same time on The Fight Network in Canada and then transition to a paid pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast at 9 p.m. ET.

Indeed, Affliction has informed MMAmania.com that the upstart promotion will shoot to televise all the fights live on the mixed broadcast. However, and this is important, there is no guarantee that all fights will air.

Here’s how it will work:

Preliminary Card (Fox Sports Net):

265 lbs.: Paul Buentello (25-10) vs. Gary Goodridge
185 lbs.: Vitor Belfort (16-8) vs. Terry Martin (16-4)
145 lbs.: Mark Hominick (15-8) vs. Savant Young (9-7)

Main card (Televised on PPV):

265 lbs.: Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) vs. Tim Sylvia (24-4)
265 lbs.: Andrei Arlovski (12-5) vs. Ben Rothwell (29-5)
265 lbs.: Josh Barnett (21-5) vs. Pedro Rizzo (16-7)
185 lbs.: Matt Lindland (20-5) vs. Fabio Nascimento (8-3)
205 lbs.: Renato “Babalu” Sobral (29-7) vs. Mike Whitehead (20-5)

Swing bouts (To be featured on PPV if time permits):

205 lbs.: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (13-3) vs. Edwin DeWees (35-12)
185 lbs.: Justin Levens (9-8) vs. Ray Lazama
170 lbs.: J.J. Ambrose (9-1) vs. Mike Pyle (16-5-1)

Affliction essentially has a four-hour block on PPV to feature eight fights; however, there are all of the other “in show” responsibilities that also need to be addressed. In particular, there is a mini Megadeth concert slated to take place during the presentation (in addition to all of the other stuff mentioned above).

Therefore, the swing bouts “may” be used if time permits and the promotion will work hard to squeeze them in. However, there are no guarantees … just like with any other PPV we have watched in the past.

Affliction “Banned” is set for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the action on fight night at 8 p.m. ET right here.

Woooooohoooo!!Can’t wait to see those Brazilians in action again. Vitor shouldn’t be just a ghost of his former self. Babalu should listen to the ref this time[or to feel the tap out]. Rizzo will give BArnett a sense of deja vous….And the not so Brazilian Fedor would give little Timmy a good spanking!

This is amazing news and hopefully eventually Affliction will push the UFC to do the same thing!!!

I truly hope that Affliction lasts because for an upstart company, I am very impressed. They seem to really understand what the hardcore fans want. All this for a 1st show is very impressive. EliteXC has survived and they NEVER put together anything close to what Affliction is doing tomorrow night aND ITS ONLY THEIR 1ST SHOW

no, you’re right no one has done this, but no one would ever pay a main event more than double what you’ll make off ppv buys alone. great card, bad business!

alright guys, here are my thoughts on the affliction show!
I can’t believe it starts off with two huge match ups for free. For those of you who are new to the sport, Vitor Belfort is an unbelievable fighter, he is always exciting to watch. Wheli Aleks Emelienko is sometimes out of shape, I have a feeling he will be in shape and ready to go in this one.
.
I’ve been the most vocal about the fact that I think Affliction will fail as a promotion. It’s simple economics, you can’t pay one fighter more money than your ppv revenue and ticket sales generate. I was also scared that with two promotions, we’d have twice as many ppv’s to buy, adding to already soaring costs of living. Then I got to thinking. If affliction succeeds, UFC will have to ink a deal with a major network or HBO, the average consumer will not buy two PPV’s a month.
.
Before I get into the fights, I cannot believe John didn’t take a third of his betus account and go for one night to CA and to this event. He has been an outspoken advocate of this event, and when it comes to Fedor fans, would probably make out with him if given the opportunity!
Barnett, Babalu, Lindland, Rizzo and arlovski are enough to entice the hardcore fans. I don’t see any of the big names losing (except Rizzo), but the lopsided match ups could mean great KO finishes!
*
* Fedor/Sylvia! WOW, I have watched the last emperor 5 times in a month, and it gets me more pumped every time! That said, I feel Sylvia will jab Fedor to death and keep him at bay. His take down defense is good, his power is great! The intangible in my mind is in the past 2 years, Tim has fought top 10 opponents over and over, while Fedor hasn’t fought anyone! I’m a Fedor fan and don’t care for Tim much, so this is my honest unbiased opinion! Watch for a 4th round uppercut connecting and Timmy pouncing. If I’m wrong or right, it doesn’t matter…This should be the fight of the year either way!!!

UFC should follow suit by having the prelims of their PPV’s on Spike. But since Dana didnt think of it first, it won’t happen.

Not all UFC events are free. Let me explain: Pay Per View’s are events that you pay to view, they are not free, get it? Not all preliminary bouts are showed on these so called “Pay Per View’s” (maybe one or two are shown). Stop me if I’m going too fast, ok? Being that the prelims aren’t normally part of the Pay Per View’s, it would be cool if they (the UFC, Ultimate Fighting Championship) showed the preilims on Spike for free prior to the “Pay Per View” starting, kind of like Affliction is doing on FSN (Fox Sports Net in case you dont know what that is) prior to their PPV (Pay Per View in case you forgot). Do you understand what I was trying to say now?

Anyway yeah I agree that they should do that and that would really help their PPV buys imo. Sorry for the error on my part of reading ha I suppose when I do that I get set up to get owned.

With Tims body he will always have problems…human bodys are not meant to be 6′8” 260. Randy took him down effortlessly. Once it goes to the ground…WHICH IT WILL…it will be over. Fedors ground game is second to none and Tim goes to the ground alot whether it be by losing balance, taken down, or hit with a right and dropped. When that happens the sambo champion will do what he does best!! Mark my words.
