mike swick
Former UFC middleweight contender and rising welterweight star, Mike Swick, underwent minor elbow surgery on Thursday to remove several bone chips that had been bothering him for several months.

According to a source close to MMAmania.com, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum is already on the road to recovery and plans to return to competition before the 2008 fight campaign expires.

Swick is coming off his most impressive performance in more than a year, outpointing Marcus Davis on all three judges scorecards at UFC 85: “Bedlam” last month. It was the first loss for the “Irish Hand Grenade” in 11 fights, snapping a win streak that dated back to early 2006.

“Quick” took home a lackluster majority decision win over Josh Burkman at UFC Fight Night 12 prior to the win.

While there is no exact timetable for a return, Swick will possibly compete in October or November of this year provided there are not setbacks in training. We’re told he should be back in the gym in a few weeks.

They showed another commercial for Affliction Banned during UFC Unleashed last night. I had to laugh when they showed Arlovski sort of howling or growling with that vampire mouth piece and then punching a wall of fire. It was pretty bad. I really hope the PPV is worth the $40.

Are you serious? Swick was just as disappointing as in his Burkman fight. His fight against Marcus should have been fight of the night, yet it was snooze of the night. He was too afraid to stand and bang with Marcus. I guess we all know now that Marcus has the better hands.

Swick is oine of my least favorite fighters to watch…. This is kind of dumb of me but I honestly do not like fighters that constantly end fights via guillotine choke…It just bothers me. If you win via guillotine in a close fight were you kind of needed it to get out of trouble, then I dont have any problem with it, like Stevenson needed it because he was in a tough fight with Tibau…I understand that, or like Nog needed it in a title fight that he was taking a beating in (Sylvia), I have no problem with it. But when guys do it right off the bat early in a fight./….IT DRIVES me crazy! Like Swick has done in the past or like Joe stevenson did, 30 seconds into the Melvin Guillard fight. I know it should be up to the opponents to defend it, but I just hate it when fighters train for months for a fight and then dont even give the fight a chance and just lock on a guillotine as soon as the fight starts, but whatever…a win is a win and I guess I would rather see fighters finish fights like thath then go to a decision, so whatever.

you know what i hate? guys that go for the knockout punch right off the bat! i mean i could see them going for a shot to the chin if they are in trouble and really need it to get the win, but come on give the fight a chance!

I just hate the guillotine choke! Its just me being stupid, but it bothers me. I dont know what it is, maybe because its one of the simples Jits moves…I jus find it annoying, but hey loosing will really hurt a fighters career now a days so I completely understand it.

I am just saying, out of all the possible finishes, (besides a boring decision) the guillotine choke is my least favorite ending to an mma fight.

yeah i was just giving ya a little sh!t :P. you’d think people would have better defense against it. same with the RNC. oh look the guy gave up his back, here comes a RNC.

it is annoying where a guy spends teh entire fight going for a guillotine choke over and over again, like marcus hicks in that Sergio Gomez fight.. marcus hicks was getting owned, but he keeps going for it and you know sooner or later he’s gonna catch him in it.

Yeah, to get out of the guillotine, you have to hop out of guard and get to side mount, then u can work your way out of it, but it just frustrating becaus eif you get locked into guard, most of the time you will be finished by the guillotine. Yeah the Marcus Hicks fight is a perfect example of what I hate!

Rear Naked choke is also a little annoying when fighters spend the entire round going fopr it. Like Couture did vs. Sylvia. Luckiy that was a 5 round fight so we got to see a lot of action anyway, but it would have sucked, had it been a 3rd round fight cause Randy would have wasted away the entire round unsuccessfully trying to lock that choke in!

I have a Question for the Brazilian Ju JItsu experts of this site…PhilQNY, I need your help!

I am trying to breakdown the Florian/Huerta match up and I would like to know how Alberto Crane’s ju jitsu measures up to Kenny Florians? Please Help!

Comment by PhilQNY

Alberto Crane Bjj is GracieBarra JuiJitsu..which is top level jits..

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
3 time Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Champion
Second person (BJ Penn first) to win gold medal in black belt division of the Mundial World Championships held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2002

Submission Wrestling
Grapplers Quest Champion
Pan American Champion
2 time Best of the West Champion
Abu Dhabi Veteran

To date Crane has alot of work to do in MMA. His fight with Roger showed his whole needs to more developed.

Now with Kenny Florian:

He earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Prof. Roberto Maia of Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gracie Barra Boston).

He as we all know has overall great MMA ability.

His brazilian jiujitsu is Gracie Barra jits.. like Alberto Cranes.. just to note Gracie Barra is not just a school, but an instatution. ( side note.. in 2004 I had the honotr of recieving my BJJ blue belt by Carlos Gracie Jr. at Gracie Barra RJ..which I’m super pride of ..when he gave it to me.. He said ” Your tuff “..that made me feel like that day was my birthday..I’ll never forget it )..ok..back to the topicat hand.. If Florian and Alberto were eve to fight a MMA fight.. I would pick Ken-Flo.. in a BJJ fight.. it would be a throw up.. I don’t know.. Before Roger fought Clay Guida I would of looked at this match up..and without ?? pick Ken-Flo.. but Roger showed me something in him..against top talent that I didn’t see before.

I really doubt the judges will be needed for this one. I’m leaning towards Kenny in this one. Who ever sets the pace early..will win this fight. Should be dozzie of a stand up war.. but once it hits the ground..Kenny’s BJJ is the x factor that I don’t think Roger will know how to deal with.

2nd round. TKO for Kenny Florian.

I have a question for all of you to ponder: Who do u think welterweights: Koschek, Lytle. Swick and Davis will be matched up with in their next fights? Lets play Joe Sil;va for a day (Best damn job in the world)!

I would book:

Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle since they are both coming off losses in their recent fights (plus it would be an amazingh match up between 2 equally skilled fighters.

Then, I would book Koschek vs. Swick! I know that Swick,Kos, and Fitch all train together and dont want to fight each other, but enough is enough! u cant have 3 fighters who all keep winning and want title shots hanging around the top of the division, not wanting to fight each other! Its just dumb and unprofessional. I would give Swiock and Kos an ultimatum: u guys want to keep climbing the latter and work your way to a title fight, well there can only be one of you….fight winner moves on, looser works his way back up!

I would have Kos vs Karo

Josh Burkman vs Marcus Davis

Lytle vs Hazelett

IMO..Swick is a bad match up for Kos.. if they were both healthy and on a win streaks..then..yup they would be on a crash inside the octagon.

Serra vs Hughes..coming soon to an octagon near you.

Karo is already booked to fight Yoshida, so he is out of the picture, I forgot all about McLovin (i love that guy).

Welterweights booked to fight already are:

Fitch
Gsp
Alves
Diego
Hughes
Serra
Karo
Yoshida

We are left with

Marcus Davis
Swick
Koschek
Burkman (if he doesnt get released)
Hazlett
Lytle
Fioravanti

who else am I missing that matters?

I would say:

Davis vs. Lytle for sure!
Hazlett vs. Swick
Kosch vs. luigi

Your turns to play Joe Silva!

Kos is in the mix for the title shot. I don’t like the guy but he is on a lil streak and to fight Luigi is a step down.
He would fight the loser of Fitch GSP or at least Sanchez if he beats Alves. But Alves needs to fight Diego cause he didn’t make weight at UFC Bedlem.

Luigi wopuld be3 a step down for Koschek right now, but there is no one left for Koschek to fight unless its Swick!

Think about it Kos will not get to face the winner of Fitch/GSP because BJ Penn will fight the winner in December. If Kos really wants to wait for the winner of Alves/Diego then the he would probably have to wait until Febuary to fight again. He really didnt take any damage in his fight against Lytle so I doubt he would want to wait 7 months to fight again!

Kimer: I completely overlooked: Davis vs. Luigi…that would be a brawl! good stuff

lOL If swick vs. Kos does happen, IU will be praying for the double KO along side with you….I cant stand those 2.

IMO, there is no more room at the top of the welterweight division from 3 guys from the same camp who are not willing to fight each other especially if they all continue winning there fights. IO say, match up Kos and Swick and get it over with!

I actually like that idea for a Davis/Lytle match-up. It could possibly turn out to be the brawl I was half-expecting Swick/Davis to be.

While I agree with you on principle about Swick/Kos, sorry, I just don’t see it, or any combination of the two with Fitch, happening unless some of them switch training camps or they all legitimately wipe out the rest of the WW division, which they haven’t done(yet?). I wouldn’t mind seeing Diego Sanchez Vs. Mike Swick in the future depending on the outcome of Sanchez/Alves, just to see if AKA could make it a clean sweep against the Nightmare. As for Kos, I dunno, depends how soon he intends to fight again, plus he’s just coming off of a win against Lytle, and I can’t think of any other opponents he hasn’t fought already who are also coming off of a win, or are already booked to fight someone else.

If Sanchez beats Alves he should be next in line for a title shot. Kos just got owned by GSP, so the only people who Kos needs to be fighting right now are the loser of Sanchez-Alves and the guys in his camp. Everyone else is too far down the ladder to make sense for him. Kos, Swick and Fitch need to get over their little BFF no-fighting pact.

Ah yes, Mike “Decision” Swick.

I have respect for him for getting in the Octagon, but the man put viewers to sleep with his drawn-out match-ups.

Perhaps his elbow injury stemmed from “swicking out”, lol.

I don’t really get the hate for Swick. He was running through people at 185. He beat “The Crow” when he was still good, then he ran into Okami, and lost a decision to the bigger man. The Burkman fight sucked, but he owned Davis. Is it his personality? He seems like a personable guy to me. I expect him to come out guns blazing next fight and I think some of you will come around, or at least give him the respect I think he deserves.

Yeah, he’s not the most exciting fighter in the world but he is very tough, 7-1 in the ufc. He’s beat a ton of great guys with his only loss a decision to the #1 contender (okami).

FYI Swicks last loss outside the octagon; a 2nd roung KO by Chris Leben.
