James Irvin: ‘Im going to have a trap set’ for Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 (Video)
By: MMAmaniaJames Irvin seems to be saying all the right things heading into his 205-pound tilt with Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. He’s got my wheels turning:
Props: UFC.com
Stephan Bonnar — who has a submission win over Irvin — also goes over some keys to victory for the “Sandman,” saying the guy can crack (hit hard) and that he has a puncher’s chance to stop Silva at any time. It’s interesting to say the least. That video is right here.

Yeah, ok….what? Is he gonna trap Silva’s fists between his eyes? Trap Silva’s knee under his ribcage?
You can’t trap a Spider. The Spider’s gonna do all the trappin’ in this fight I believe. IRvin’s gonna play the role of the fly and will get lured by Silva to be agressive and stuff[w/c is Irvin’s nature, based on the confidence he’s ridin’ on right now]. And this of course will work to Silva’s advantage and the Spider will immediately capitalize on Irvin’s mistakes.
Around 85% of kicks and punches landed and 2 rounds later, Irvin, who’s supposed to be the Sandman, will be the one who’s goin’ to sleep…But then again, chances are just chances. Irvin IMO has a puncher’s chance here in this LHW match. I really don’t think Anderson’s speed will decrease dramatically, but this fight could end real quick…
I lot of people have been mentioning that they think Anderson will be slower at 205. I actually don’t think that will be the case. It is not like he is taking 8 months off to bulk up. He walks around at 215 so he will just simply be cutting less weight, meaning that he will be “fresher” - and who knows, maybe he’ll be even faster at 205 because of the lesser cut.
When Anderson is training for a MW fight, he is about 205 or so. So people think that he is only fast the day of the fight, but he isn’t fast in practice? I don’t get it.
Yeah, I dont see why he would be any slower either. WE wil find oyut in 8 days I guess
Drum rolls please…
For those who miseed my posts yesterday. It seems as though the UFC is looking to expand into uncharted waters:
UFC: 89 in the UK (which is nothing new) but
UFC: 90 Chicago (possibly) and
UFC 91: Portland (possibly)
Machida also wont be fighting for the title in his next fight. He will fight in October against an opponent who is booked, but not announced yet…I hear that it will be Machida vs. Tiago Silva…If True, I wouldnt mind! Which would mean that Rampage is left to Fight Wanderlei and Liddell will get the 1st crack at Forrest’s title assuming Rashad cant lay n pray his way to a decision win. Leaving Shogun to make his DECEMBER return against Sokoudjou
pretty cool man…i think you’re logically right?…Thiago vs Machida MIGHT happen?…youll be totaly right if that fight happens!!!
Well I thought it was Thiago Silva against Wanderlei Silva? That would be nice!
you can easily trap a spider. Anderson Silva on the other hand is difficult to trap.
Everyone else that fought Silva was the aggressor first and that didn’t work out so well. If he does what he says he is going to do ,it will really help his chances. He has to let Silva come to him. Maybe it won’t work, but it sure as hell doesn’t work to rush after him. Also Spiders do trap their prey, but they can be STOMPED.
I do not think Anderson is going to lose this fight, but I’m not looking at Irving as a can either. Nobody gave him a shot against Houston Alexander. Everyone thought Houston was going to pound him into the floor. Well, we all saw what happened. Irving definately has enough pop to drop Silva if he connects and that’s all it takes in a fight. Look at Gonzaga vs Cro Cop. So, yes Silva is the man, but this is not going to be a Chris Leben steam roll.
He is far from a can, thats for sure! I think that he is the perfect opponent. I dont expect him to loose but stylistically it will make for a great fight, although I wouldnt expect it to last long.
Question: How many of you see this fight making it to a 2nd round?
I definitely see it ending in less than 1.5 rounds. I WISH they still have the over/unders…
I know, I love Overs/Unders…I think they are usually easier to bet on than the actual fight.
My prediction here is that either late in the 1st round or the early goin’ in the 2nd round, which is when Silva has already seemed to figure out the opponent at hand…
Yeah, seeing how NO Man has even seen the 3rd round against Silva since he has joined the UFC, we would have to assume that the latest this fight ends, like u said….EARLY 2nd round
Agreed.
EVERYBODY, was going after Silva right of the bat. Big mistake. That is exactly what he wants you to do, so he can feel you out and gauge your timing. If Irvin does what he say, and makes Silva come to him, it won’t be over quickly and it will be a BORING fight.
Gord, why do you say so? I mean, The Spider’s fights are never borin’…To me I suppose this will be a fight that has history written all over it. Anderson will definitely climb the LHW ladder, big time!!!
I can apreciate Silva wanting some better competition, but Irvin? What were all the actualy contenders at 205 taken? I;m sorry I’m really trying not to knock him because he’s had a rough couple of fights in the past with injuries, but if arguable the best pound for pound fighter moves up a weight class cause he’s stomped everyone else, I’d make it a point to find him more of a legitimate contender. And whats up with the next fight in the UK, Leaben vs. Bisping…are you kidding me!! Thats your headliner? Who gives a shit!! Bisping was just populer because of the Ultimate fighter and was never a threat at 205 so he decided to go Anorexic and drop down, and Leaben was a reject even on that show!! What the hell is Dana White thinking? You got one of the biggest fights in the history of MMA between Tim Sylvia and FEDOR EMELIANENKO with another orginization because you didn’t wanna pony up the money, and rejects like Kimbo Slice on CBS primetime because Dana couldnt make a tv deal? SHIT IS MESSED UP
- what’s wrong with Irvin? Silva has no plans to stay at 205 so why risk the damage against a contender.
- what’s wrong with Bisping moving down in weight? fighters do this all the time for their careers. Leben vs. Bisping should be a very fun standup war.
- you’re telling Zuffa how to run their company? where were YOU in 2001??? You should have bought the UFC YOURSELF so you dont have to complain about how they manage their assets.
Zuffa is doing a FINE job as far as running their company goes. a FINE job.
hahahhaha That is both hilarious and (nearly) prophetic!
As much as I’m a fan of The Spider. I dont know, I’m starting to think Irvin might take this fight. I just cant see Silva being as dominant at LHW.
yeah right?
r u serious?
maybe if andy was fighting a top-teer light heavy then i would agree.
did u see irvin fake his way out of the beating luis cane was giving him?
that will b the same thing except when andy knees irvin he
wont be fortunate to have one knee down on the mat this time.
I havent seen the Irvin vs. Cane fight yet (and I am a new fan of cane’s) can anyone tell me what event that fight took place in? Thanks!
tell me this man was not faking?
http://www.mmatko.com/luiz-cane-vs-james-irvin-fight-video-ufc-79-nemesis/
Thanks Stinky!
what is your opinion?
I hate to say it, but to me it looked like he should have been able to continue, but who knows….Maybe he was faking it, and thought WTF, I dont have to keep going, If I stop right now, I am guranteed a win and my pay doubles, or he could have been out of it, no one will ever really know but him! If I had to guess, I would say faking it, but I like Irvin and respect him so I hope we are wrong!
no doubt he was thinking that.
he should have just stayed on the ground and faked it cause
once he stood up and started to stumble and fake like
he did not understand where he was?
he was not fooling me with that mediocre acting.
plus look at how bad luis cane was kickin his butt?
i dont blame him on a finacial stand point.
if he had continued he would have never seen a win bonus.
Thx Stinky..I have yet to see this fight..but the link for some strange reason is not allowing to see it. That shit got me tight.
I would like to see Luis Cane (who I am a new fan of) fight Gorenj (the croation kat who kicked Goveai’s ass and cost me some money)
That would be a great fight!
Hardly…Irvin didn’t fake his way out. He wanted to continue but wasn’t able. I’d be surprised if Irvin doesn’t go right at Silva. It’d definately throw Silva off because I’ve never seen anyone crazy enough to do it except Leben. I’ve seen Irvin fight heavyweights (Granted it was WEC), but he went right at them. He fears nobody. It may be a big mistake, but he can take a punch…that’s for sure.
yeah he was saying he wanted to continue but was faking by
stumbling around with his mediocre acting job.
Stinky-
How long ago was that fight?
My job blocks videos…
ufc 79.
son.
Well, Leben went straight at Silva and look what happened to him. I’m not sure if Anderson will destroy Irvin like he did Leben, but I’m hoping he will.
OJR, the fight was at UFC 79 in December. Stinky…wanna be…nah…nevermind.
Good choice.
Guys help me out on this one… Why aren’t there more Irvin fans? He always brings it to the table, win or lose. He is well spoken and doesn’t turn down fights and has two of the slickest ko’s in MMA! I think this fight is going to be crazy. But why all the hate towards the Sandman?
i used 2 like the sandman until he faked his way to a win over luis cane.
by faking i assume you mean taking an illegal knee to the eye ball and still wanting to continue despite being visually impaired……
I dont’ think that people are hating on him, they are just saying that he is a big underdog with a punchers chance going into the fight with the #1 lb for lb fighter. Its not just people on this site that think Irvin is the underdog, check the odds.
Yeah, I love whaching James Irvin fights! THey are usually very exciting win or loose. Because of the CRAZY odds, I will actually bet $20 on Irvin, simply because I acknowledge the punchers chance that he brings with him going into every single fights, but like ViolentMike said, we are talking Anderson Silva here! No one in the world is on top of their game RIGHT NOW like Silva is. His “ballet of Violence” has blown through everyone that has stood in front of him, and he has faced some GREAT fighters. Rich, Hendo, Marquardt and even Leben are all very Dangerous guys, who we all of the sudden have diminished simply because Anderson made them look like NOTHING. He is super professional and we can count on him to bring it in every single one of his fights, unlike my boy PAGE! No man has ever KO’ed him, and Irvin may very possibly be the one, but until I see it, I just cant pick against Anderson Silva!
I am not saying Irvin cant or wont do it, I just cant sit here and pick against Silva because if he is going to loose a FIGHT against ANYONE, I would really have to see it to believe it!
For those that want to see Anderson loose, I still would think that a rematch vs. Henderson would be your best bet to see that Happen, but I have to admit, Irvin’s KO power makes me a little nervous!
ballet of violence…nice line. I think that Irvin does have a punchers chance. I wonder if there’s odds on what round the fight makes it to. I’d be stunned if this fight went to the second round, but I’d bet money it ain’t going to the third.
I didnt come up with the Ballet of Violence, I think Rogan did, but I cant remember! It is a classic line that perfectly describes what Anderson Silva brings to the Octagon
I cant wait to shut you up john when silva gets put to sleep.
WTF did I say now? I am betting on james Irvin !!! r u dislexic or something? Do u have a hard time interprteting the words you see on your screen? Get with it! I dont even know who u are, nor do I care what u think…I dont even notice you dude, so why cant u just not notice me?
Do u have a crush on me or something? U r a creepy Kat!
The Spider is the greatest MMA fighter on the planet right now, hands down! So no matter how slick and suave Irvin’s finishes are, you absolutely can’t count the champion out[not mentionin’ of course what happened to Rampage, LOL!]…I’m placin’ my prediction on the Spider, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Irvin emerges victorious…
Why do ppl think that everytime many of us think fighter B is going to lose to fighter A all of the sudden we’re hating on fighter B? It’s non-sense! we just feel the spider will win, there is no hate towards Irvin, the guy deserves respect for stepping up but I can’t see him beating Anderson, simple as that. There is no hate going on here, I’m not calling Irvin a d*ck or a p*ssy, that would be hate.
U are right Linx, thats how people tend to take it!
For the record, I am a big fan of the Spider, I really enjoy watching Irvin fight. I think Silva will win this fight, but because of the odds I have to bet/waste $20 on Irvin
He’s an exciting fighter but he should show more respect to an mma legend. Anybody who follows this sport knows Irvin has only a punchers chance, that 99 times out of 100 fights he will have his ass handed to him, so at least head toward your pending asskicking with a little bit of dignity.
with the odds i am getting on this fight i was goiing to bet on irvin
and just let the money slide.
but then i thought about it and there is no way andy looses this fight.
it is not even worth just making a little bet.
it would be a gauranteed money wasted bet..
prediction = andy via brutal masacre of violence!
uh huh. just like your sure thing bet on that can McCulley.
hey man it happens.
it wasn’t really mccully that made me place that bet.
i will bet agianst gonzaga his next fight aswell.
I see what u r saying Stinky. Often when I bet, I bet against a certain fighter, not for his opponent. Like in Febuary I had Boetsh over David Heath. I didnt know wnything about Boetsh but UI bet on him because I felt Heath was very suseptible to being upset! Know what I mean?
And you will lose again stinky. Betting against GG isn’t the smartest move (losing only to Randy and Werdum doesn’t make one a can)ecpecially when he is fighting a CAN. GG is the real deal. You probably think GG got a lucky stike against CC. The truth is he OWNED CC in EVERY aspect of the game.
I think Irvin will will take this fight. He has a better chance than any of Silvas other fights. If it goes to the ground Irvin is screwed.
If it goes to the clinch, Irvin is screwed. If Anderson peppers him with 3 or 4 shots, Irvin is screwed. He won’t know which Silva to punch at since he’ll be seeing several of them. The best chance Irvin has is to be elusive, move well and land that one big shot. If he tries to stand and bang like he usually does, he’ll be out on his feet.
Hummm..Well what Irvin is failing to realize is Anderson Silva is ” the trap “.. Who is the casual MMA fan world knew who Irvin was before this UFN card?? Ivrvin is get all this press and attention, because he is fighting Anderson Silva. I give Irvin props for stepping up and taking on the MMA legend. The fight will not be much different then Silva’s last 5 fights. Irvin will play his role in this fight.. the 6th UFC fighter to get a kneeful of Anderson Silva..and another an L on his record.
Irvin has demonstrated over and over again that he shouldn’t be counted out. I think he will be too much for Silva. He did say he has a trap ready for Silva. Additionally, he said Silva will be slow. If so, Irvin will devastate Mr. Anderson. Go ahead and hate.
Are you going to believe everthing Irvin says?? The earth is flat and is 17 miles away..it’s true..it came out of Irvin’s mouth.
..” the sun is 17 miles away from the earth..
LMAO! But Irvin said! lol
LMAO, if Irvin said it than it has to be true!
HAHAHAHA
James-
Stick to your guns, man.
These guys all had Rampage “destroying” Forrest…
Hey.. I still have Page “destroying” Forrest in a rematch.
Hahahaha
Keep sticking with it cuz you will eventually get one right!
And Almeida destroying Cote and Lytle destroying Kos …

Some Comic relief : The judges at UFC86 must of been hanging with the same guy..at the same pub before getting their pens and blank score cards.

Silva still has the height, and reach advantage….and from what I’ve seen, he can take a good punch and he dodges nearly everything people throw at him. But, I still have a WIERD feeling that Irvin will somehow pull this off. I actually thought Houston would maul him but I was proved wrong. If Irvin can connect a good power shot, Silva is goin down.
actually both are 6′2″ and both have 75 inch reach.
really? I didnt know that…for some reason I thought Irvin was 6ft with 72? Guess I was confused. Or maybe I was thrown off since I heard an interview with Irvin saying he was too small to compete with the big guys at 205? Wonder why he said that?
I think because he lost against Bonnar(6′4″) and look at the other guys: Liddell 6′2″ reach 77inch, Forrest 6′3″ reach 77inch. Also in his debut at heavyweightweight he got ko’ed by a much larger mike kyle.
Silva hasn’t fought anyone w/ the standup that Irvin has. Don’t tell me Leben has great stand up. he has a good chin and heavy hands but he’s a brawler. Look at Irvin’s knockout power as well as his footwork. He has a legit shot. It’ll be a great muay thai match but i think Irvin’s power will overwhlem silva.
Anderson trains with Lyoto Machida, who has better footwork than Irvin, and he trains with Big Nog, who has more power than Machida. There’s nothing Irvin has that Silva won’t be prepared for. Irvin has a puncher’s chance and that’s it.
when anderson fought hendo everybody said anderson never fought a great wrestler and would lose to hendo, now ppl say anderson never fought a great striker and because hendo lost they say he was never a great wrestler. me thinks in the near future ppl will say irvin’s stand up is nothing great and the spider hasn’t fought anyone with great stand up. I can just picture it…
All I have to say, is if people think that Anderson Silva hasnt fought against great strikers than they are out of their minds! For starters Anderson is originally from Chute Bow, where everyday u are in a fight. He spent endless hours over there banging with guys like Wanderlei, Shogun, Ninja when they were young and really out of their minds. Also, Silva has had more than a couple of Muy Tai fights through out his career which are straighth striking match ups, so I dont know how anyone can possibly say that he hasnt fought against Greaqt strikers….Thats jyust absurd!
correction: Chute Box!
John: Msot people here just see his UFC fights..and opponents and do not put into account his “whole career” thus far.
Yeah, thats the problem!
MMA NEWS FLASH : Jeremy Jackson has been arrested and charged with 2 counts of rape..kidnapping..some other felonies.. bail was set at 1million dollars. It should of been 100million. IMO.
Isnt he the dude that was hoping fences to chase Bitches on that TUF comeback show? What a fool!
I hope he gets raped in prison daily by a life’r named Jose and his buddies.
If this is true, he should spend life in the Ultimate Kumite, also known as Prison!
John: what really gets my blood boiling are rapests/ child molesters. I would propose to have all the rapests/child molestors in America plus abroad..gathered all in Yankee stadium..if more space is needed.. Shea stadium..and just it blown up.
Yeah, there is nothing worse than serious Sexual offenders!
they were trying to pass a law here in TX to have those people who are 2nd offenders receive the death penalty. I agree except I think first time offenders should get it…
Chadx23: u r from texas? I read a crazy story in the PHILADELPHIA daily news the other day:
Some Kid, in texas went to like 13 different police precincts pretending to be representing Mothers against Drunken Drivers, and he gave brownie’s and cookies to all the different precincts…Later on the cops find out he wasnt really with the organizations and all the brownies and cookies were laced with Marijuanna and ACID! Crazy stuff man, I found it histerical, but the kid got arrested and some of the cops got sick!\
CRAZY STUFF!
I heard about that on Monday! Cookies laced with LSD or soething like that! Funny stuff! Seems like Texas is going crazy ltely with all kinds of crap like the poligamist group and what not…who knows whats next!
Prison F*ck!!!
Some more info on Jeremy Jackson :
He is being charged with “two counts of forcible rape, kidnapping to commit another crime, first-degree residential burglary, assault with a firearm, dissuading a witness by force or threat, and criminal threats. and three additional charges — all felonies ”
He apparently broke into a house, raped one, maybe two women, at gun point, said he would kill her (them) if they talked, and stole something on the way out.
Wow, I guess if he wants to commit a crime (or six) he’s going to get his money’s worth. This has been a strange week for this. Former U of Florida b-ball player Teddy Dupay was just arrested for rape, battery, false imprisonment, etc. And one of the Kicking Zendejas Brothers from the NFL was arrested for drugging and raping a woman at his sports bar.
What a piece of shit he is, give him the Angel of Death petrol injection to the heart.
PW: r u kidding me? I used to LOVE Teddy Dupay! His 3’s were Butter until he got kicked off the team for gambling. I used to be a big fan of that kid when he played…What a ass!
PhilQNy: thats a shame, I home his ass hole gets ground n pounded in prison for the rest of his life….That really makes me sick hearing stuff like that!
Let’s face it - he has a puncher’s chance. However, I think that in sime ways it would be bad for the sport in general if Irvin was to win - it would be discounting skill as a barometer. It would be equivalent to Serra over GSP.
If pure skill was the only thing that mattered then there would be no need to fight. Just compare their BJJ belts, watch each of them work the heavy bag and declare a winner.
