Quoteworthy:

“[Fighting at 205 pounds] is an experience we are doing for several reasons, and one of them is a request from Dana White…. I don’t have a desire to fight in this category and am only doing it because I was asked and I think I can. I have no desire to dispute this belt because Lyoto has already proven that it belongs to him. I am taking this fight because I like to fight and I like the challenges.”

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva shares some insight on his move up to light heavyweight to take on James Irvin at UFC Fight Night 14. “The Spider” reveals that he has no intentions of competing for the 205-pound belt as long as undefeated training partner and friend, Lyoto Machida, is in the picture. However, there is not telling when Machida will get his shot at championship glory — there is quite a long line of potential challengers in the division.

wtf? Cote is not gonna fight Bisping whats the sense in that, he just beat Almeida for christ sake and is pretty much guranted a title shot in December or somewhere round there, Bisping is fighting in October so do you think Cote is gonna waste his time and put his title shot on hold to fight Bisping. Bisping will probably face Quarry after the Leben fight and if he wins them he’ll get a title shot and your crazy if you think Bisping can beat Silva.

Was this response to my comment. Becuase Cote is not guranteed a title shot after his performance. In the post fight interview Cote even stated he might not get a shot at the title after that fight. Maybe he will but there was never a gurantee. Also, you’re right Bisping will never beat Silva.

what does everyone think about a rule that would not allow fighters to be saved by the bell when caught in a submission. the would have to escape to end the round, no transitioning into different sumbissions, just either get out or you lose.

then tito would have beat machida and we could stop all this nonsense. the guy is extremely talented but he’s gonna lose sooner or later, my guess is sooner if he fights anybody named silva

Disagree… a round ends when the bell sounds. How long would you be allowed to hold someone in a triangle after the bell sounds and what if they started to slip could you reposition? All of this happening after the round ends??? Not a chance…

At the moment, I see no reason for the UFC to risk having such a boring fighter (Machida) as their champion. Yes, he is very skilled, and his style is effective, but in the biggest division in the UFC, you should really be able to finish a majority of your fights to be a champion.

The current best pound per pound fighter on this side ofthe galaxy has spoken the truth. John posted on Mania yesterday what Lyoto’s opinion on the fight was.. Like most us know.. The ufc wants to give a title shot to Chuck..not because he is the most deserving..but because he is the “Iceman”..and they want to keep milking the UFC Cow.

Comment by JV
2008-07-09 09:55:06

Who is more deserving than Chuck? Machida should try beating a top 10 guy before openning his mouth. Machida is the only one getting an easy road to a title shot. Chuck has fought Wandy and was going to fight Shogun (its not Chucks fault Shogun got hurt) So if Chuck beats Rashad he definatly deserves a shot.

Comment by john

JV: Come on man, you are better than that! How is Machida supposed to beat a top 10 guy, when they are all afraid to fight him? He has fought and dominated everyone that the UFC has put in front of him, its not his fault that none of the top fighters want any part of him!

U think Chuck deserves a title shot? r u kidding me? Lets look at his recent record:
Lost to Rampage
Lost to Jardine
Win against Wanderlei
? Rashad Evans

Now u think that is a resume of someone who should be fighting for the title in the best division in mma?

If Chuck beats Rashad he definetly DESERVES a shot? THats freaking Histerical man! I realy hope u werent being serious!

Well I was being serious and this is why. Anderson/Leban then title shot, Rampage/Eastman then title shot, Penn/Pulver then title shot. Who else has done more for the UFC’s popularity than Chuck? So Chuck/Wandy should have brought him back, but he was still going to fight Shogun thats 2 top 10 guys. Who has Machida fought thats top 10??? At least let him fight 1 top 10 guy, then maybe a title shot. And he has to make it exciting.

Its takes two fighter’s to see a action packed fight.

When Chuck was LHW Champ..he had all but cleaned the “wrestlers” in the division. Page had killed him in Pride.. that’s why Page got a warm up fight and was pitted against Chuck..who else at the time was more worthy of a title shot??

Who was threat to Franklins title at the time. He defened his title against Evan Tanner, Nate Quarry, Daveid L..who was a threat at middle weight to Fanklin then. Silva was.. that’s why he got his title shot after his warm up fight with Leben. ( And how he beat Leben put an ! on why he deserved the title shot.

Chuck loses to Page. Loses to Jardine. wins a decision over Wandy..will most likely beat ” another wrestler “..in Rashad.. and he gets a title shot over either Thiago Silva/ Machida who are IMO the 1 and 2 top contenders today for the title..outside of Page..who deserves a rematch.

JV, I have made the same point before, but no one will listen. As far as timing is concerned it needs to be Machida. We had to wait 9 months last time and Chuck doesn’t fight for a couple more months. That would mean we have to wait until the end of the year. Machida is ready now. I do not want to wait to see Forrest fight again for 6 months. The only other option would be an immediate rematch with Rampage (which I don’t think he deserves).

PhilQNY, I can agree to an extent. But you guys are still not answering the question. Who has Machida faced thats top 5 or even top 10??? To me a win over Wandy is way better than 10 wins with B-Level fighters. And if you just look at Chucks last 3 fights then yes, no title shot yet. But a win over a guy who destroyed Rampage. Instead of a Machida win over Tito who is past his prime. Who would you prefer???

Comment by JV
2008-07-09 10:37:58

BNF, if Machida got his title shot in that (timing) then I guess it would be ok. But to say Machida deserves it is wrong. I say give him a top guy, and if he wins, (no matter how boring) then yes give him the shot after that.

People still to forget that Soko was top 10 before Lyoto schooled him, and some rankings still have Soko top 10. Some rankings still also had Tito in the top 10 before Lyoto beat him. Tito had fought Rashad to a draw, and could have won if he hadn’t grabbed the fence. Rashad had won all his fights coming in to that fight. Lyoto has also beat BJ Penn (who’s dangerous in any weight), and KTFO’d Rich Franklin.

Anyone who says Machida hasn’t fought anyone good is stupid. He fought Sokodju who was and still is in the top 10. He fought Tito who basically beat Rashad. I don’t believe this, people say Chuck should get the title shot if he beats Rashad. Machida beat Tito who proved he was better then Rashad and only earned a draw beceause he’s an idiot and grabbed the fence. Machida is undefeated and has dominated everyone who has been put infront of him including Sokodju (a top 10 fighter) and Tito (Who is every bit as good as Rashad) and needless to mention he’s not coming off 2 losses like Liddell. Liddell beat Wandy and all the sudden he’s the #1 contender? This is complete bullshit.

TIME OUT PHIL:

Thiago Silva a top 2 contender. Who has he beat????? Houston….Drwal….injury win over Irvin….come on man. Don’t get me wrong, I think this kid is the future of the division, but his undefeated record isn’t exactly glowing with top level opposition. A. Silva should already be higher up the contender list than Thiago. Lets put this all to rest here and have Machida fight Thiago, then we don’t have to have these arguments about neither one beating a top tier guy. Title eliminator.

Personally I got Thiago in that fight. He is a stone cold killer against a guy with ZERO killer instinct. Tactician sure, but Machida has no animal in him. A. Silva is elusive and fights in and out, but when he is clearly outclassing an opponent or smells blood, he beats on them viciously until they crumble. He throws enough steam on every shot to hurt you, but doesn’t overcommit. This in my opinion, is what Mach. doesn’t do. Sit down on your shots a little more and try to hurt somebody, there’s no way he should be so afraid to get taken down that he fights the way he does. Showed good takedown D against tito, and I’m sure has plenty of Jits off his back. at least enough to defend and get stood back up. Very talented guy, but needs to get after it man. He’ll never see big money, even as a champion if he doesn’t start going for broke. There’s a big difference between the way he fights and the wreckless style that Leben and Forrest used to have. Both those guys have settled down and fight effectively now but Leben’s got power so still finishes guys. There’s no doubt in my mind Machida can do the same and look alot like the spider in doing so but he’s gotta get his out of it and let the killer loose. Stop treating this like an athletic competition to score points and pretend the guy fucked your wife

While Chuck’s performances in his last three fights have not been impressive collectively, he was a champion for several years. Most guys that have held a belt that long would get a rematch or shot at the belt again fairly soon. Chuck obviously wasn’t going to get it against Rampage after getting manhandled twice. I would at least understand why he would get his shot and wouldn’t complain.

However, if they don’t give Lyoto the shot next, they need to make a definitive #1 contender’s match with him involved so there is no question about the caliber of opponents he has faced and hopefully boost his popularity a little so fights aren’t made (or more specifically avoided) based on his marketability.

Well in regards to Thiago Silva..The UfC is not marketing him right..really they are not marketing him at all.. Does anyone know who he is??? Take a step back and look at the LHW picture. Who today deserves a title shot? Who would be in a 1 number one contender fight??

Well..Page gets an automatic rematch first and fore most.

Thaigo Silva vs Machida would be a good match up to decide a number 1 contender.

Wandy is still in the mix. He can fight one of the names above to get closer to a title shot. ( some may say..oh Wandy lost to Chuck..right.. well Chuck lost to Jardine who Wandy just retired from the UFC.. and Chuck supposable is getting a title if he beats Rashad Evans. )

Chuck vs Rashad.. what does that fight decide? It shouldn’t be for the title.

Are you forgetting that if Rahsad beat Chuck that that fool will get a title shot as well? I know Chuck lost to Rampage, but alot of people seem to forget that was when he HAD the belt, most people get a rematch after winning just 1 fight after loosing the belt. See Matt Hughes, Randy Couture….I dont have a problem with Chuck getting a title shot if he beats Rashad. I mean come on….If lyoto is that good, then he will eventually get a shot and beat whoever has the belt at that time right? Giving a title shot to Chuck is not that bad…trust me it could be worse.

I don’t think that Chuck/Evans is a “true #1 contender fight”. I believe that if Chuck wins, he gets a title shot. If Rashad wins, the title picture gets even more blurry, so the UFC would book Forrest/Machida. Then they can have Evans fight Wanderlei in a #1 contender fight.

I’m getting tired of saying it on every Machida link but it frustrates the f*ck out of me how overlooked Thiago is.

He just snapped Mendes’s 11 fight winning streak, Drwal’s 13 fight winning streak dominated Alexander when everyone else was scared to fight him and holds a win of sorts over Irvin who is getting a lot of hype.

He has as good a record as Machida (ok minus the wins over big names) but is exciting as fu*k to watch and finishes fights.

If the UFC don’t give him a big name fight next outing i’m going back to boxing ; )!!!!!

Thiago vs Wand
Thiago vs Machida
Thiago vs Jardine
Thiago vs Soko

Stylistically Thiago is the best match up to make a Machida fight exciting to all u bloodthirsty fans who dont appreciate the strategical excellence that Machida displays in every one of his fights.

JV: Come on man, because Chuck was willing to fight shogun, thats supposed to count for sopmething? Chuck should get a title shot because he was willing to fight Shogun? Who is to say that Chuck wouldnt have gotten KO against Shogun? then were would your posterboy be?

Whoever gets the next title shot at Forrest, has a very very good chance of wearing the belt.

Rest assured, Dana will make that the most marketable fighter possible. That rules Lyoto out, sad but true.

Personally I think all this weight class jumping is a crock of sh_te. Choose you weight and stick to it or move permanently.

I personally think that the fighters should all fight at the weight of their respective weight class on the night of the fight. This would make it fair giving no fighters any advantage.

Some peoples genetics enable weight cutting and subsequent weight gain easier than others

Thiago Silva has boat loads of potential but he has not faced a Top 10 opponent. Lyoto has. Believe it or not, Tito was still Top 10 in the UFC and Soko was Top 10 the day he was signed.

Lyoto does not suck. I was not a fan of his until the Nakamura fight. I almost fell asleep watching him fight Senator Sam Hoger… But ever since his 3rd UFC fight, I have been a BIG fan of his.

GAURENTEEEE Machida wouldn’t KO HALF or EVEN 1/4 the guys Thiago did. And even if Thiago lost to a sokoudju or Tito, at least he’d be going down swinging, which in my opinion deserves more respect than a lack luster snoozefest “W”.

that makes no sense. So if Machida wins by decision, he deserves to move down in the rankings. But if he lost by KO, he moves up in the rankings?

Logic and Statistics must have been your worst class in school!

Good post Nick. I am a big Machida fan but you are right Thiago deserves a few big name opponents as well. I would love to see Machida vs Thiago.

John I think you are right about Machida Vs Thiago being a very exciting fight. That would be a great fight to watch.

I also agree with you in the fact that people do not appreciate how tactical Machida is. He is so sound and precise in everything he does. I can’t wait to see who his next opponent is.

Also just because he hasn’t finished many fights in the UFC does not mean that he is boring to watch. I thought the Ortiz fight was exciting, the Soko fight, and the Kaz fight were great as well. Sometimes you don’t get lucky and sometimes you get those fighters that are difficult to finish.

Truthfully I have enjoyed everyone of his fights in the UFC. It is amazing to see his athleticism at work. To me it is amazing to see a fighter like Machida, no one can figure him out. He rarely gets hit and is almost never in a bad position.

MMAfan, I hear you! I dont know about everyone else, but since the nakamura fight Machida has been really exciting. Its amazing to watch him fight for 15 minutes, tagging people up, while remaining untouchable….U cant hit Machida…and if you cant hit him, u sure as hell cant beat him!

Thiago was supposed to fight Evans at UFC 84, but when Shogun went down the fight was scrapped.

You are pathetic if you think Machida deserves a shot. I cant wait until Irvin dismantles Silva with leg kicks and then puts him to sleep. I have lost all respect for Silva thinking he is all high and mighty, please Irvin put this clown sleep for good. Machida is the most boring fighter on the planet I hope he gets put to sleep as well, maybe after Irvin tucks in Silva he can put machida to sleep.

Is this a translation thing? Maybe spidey means that Machida has shown that he has the skills to win the belt?

Machida will get KTFO sooner or later….everyone always does. I know he is good and respect his skills, but his style just makes for boring matches. The ony good part about his fight with Tito was when he took him down and then towards the end he dropped Tito with a knee to the body, but that was quickly forgotten when Tito caught him in a triangle lol. Anyway, I dont see Machida hanging with the true big boys at 205, Liddell, Rampage, Wanderlei….ect.

Do you think he was going to hang with Soko at UFC79?? Machida got crazy skills..look at Tito’s face in between rounds

Soko looked lost on the ground, and he’s supposed to be a jits guy I thought, I don’t think a flash knock out over Nog shoulda earned soko top LHW status and lyoto vs Soko was still boring anyhow, *yawn*. However I do think Machida can hang with any top tier LHW I just don’t think I would pay $$ to watch Machida pick shots and dance around the cage for 5 rds to win a decision on a title shot. Face it, no matter how good the guy is, he’s just plain boring..

Yea I know, that sucked so bad I wanted to take my hat off my head and rip it in half, but I couldn’t rip the fabric so I just stomped on it a couple times..

However, my friends said they’d still rather watch me stomping on my hat than a fight with Machida in it…

Unless my hat gets caught in the wind, and I have to chase it around to stomp on it, then it’s just as entertaining as watching a Machida fight…

Guess what? Forrest realizes that he has no Power in his strikes (besides kicks) so he will now fight just like Machida when facing power punchers….So if you dont like the way Machida fights, u arent going to enjoy watching Forrest to defend his title because he will do exactly what Machida does, stick and move, avoid getting hit, with his best and probably only chance of finishing a fight being via submission.

I dont understand how people thought that Machida vs. Ortiz was boring. I loved that fight, I thought it was very exciting and both me and my brother were at the edge of our seats while watching it!

I do understand where the Machida haters are coming form because I used to hate the guy and used to find him very boring, but since tyhe Nakamura fight he has turned up the heat and I have found his fights to be very exciting!

I’m just hoping the guy takes a few more chance’s in the future, I like fighters like Wandy that are willing to get in there and try to take the other guys head off. Machida seems content to win a decision but not win the fight, it’s like he doesn’t have any desire what-so-ever to finish a guy, he just wants to make it 3 rds and take his decision. I wanna see the guys heart tested, and as far as I’m concerned no one has done that yet.

Machida does everything Forrest does better. He lands quicker and moves away faster. Forrest actually gets hit Machida doesn’t. People don’t like Machida beceause he doesn’t get hit. Since when do you have to get punched in the face to be exciting?

I’m not getting the comparision of Machida and Forrest here. Tito is not a heavy hitter so I think Forrest would have brawled with him. Don’t see the relation of Forrest’s game plan against a guy like Chuck or Rampage which is not to get repeatedly hit in the face is like Machida’s game plan against anyone which is not to get hit all. When people bought the Forrest Rampage fight they were not expecting a decision or even a win by Forrest so it again that didn’t make sense either. Forrest cannot hit as hard as the big dogs but he’ll throw done none the less and he will take a hit to give a hit. I don’t say what Lyoto does is wrong but I know it is completely different than what Forrest does.
