jorge gurgel

Props: Seattle Post Intelligencer

Quoteworthy:

“… my game plan is to just finish the fight. I’ve never really had a game plan before. I’d just go in there, throw hands and go crazy. This time, I’m a completely different animal, I have a game plan, I’m going to follow it and not allow this fight to go to a decision. I can’t tell you too much about it, but for the first time in my career I have a game plan and will follow it. I hope it works, I’m not sure yet.”

Jorge Gurgel details his training and preparation with Matt Hume prior to his fight against Cole Miller at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5. Gurgel has won three fights in five attempts inside the Octagon — all of those contests have gone to decisions. Prior to his arrival in the UFC he had 10 wins all via submission.

No offense b/c i dont wanna bash any fighter but would this guy even be in the ufc at all if he wasnt tossing Rich Franklins salad on a daily basis??? Move on to the wec or another company jorge and you mite have some success or retire and be a coach full time.

If you’re fighting for the biggest mma organization in the world and you say a statement like “IM NOT SURE”, thats a perfect indicator that you dont belong there, lol.

“I’m not sure yet”.

If Jorge never came into a fight with a gameplan, why in the world does Rich Franklin continue to have him in his corner? If this little self proclaimed animal can’t even come up with a game plan to suit his own skill set, how in the world can he come up with one for someone else?

Sure Rich, he’s your friend, but sometimes you need to leave training with your friends to get better.

This is why Gurgel is the Cabana Boy. He does a nice job training Rich, hence the sweet escape from what should have been a fight-ending arm bar against Lutter, but Gurgel doesn’t belong in the ring. He shouold totally go with the whole Cabana Boy thing and come out to the ring in a leopard print banana hammock and a tray of umbrella drinks.

and compare that fight to any of his other fights, he actually stuck to his game plan up untill the 3rd round when he stood in the pocket and banged.

This is such a tough fight for Jorge, and with Matt Hume in his corner, we should see a 100% different Jorge Gurgel.. should be nice.

haha, so whats your beef with him? From what I’ve seen even in losing the guy never gives up, he just keeps on trying. I credit him for giving it his all, if he fails and it doesn’t turn out right then o well, he’s been farther then YOU have, or did I miss the last time you fought on a UFC card???

P.S. Despite the fights going to decision, the guys been in some pretty high paced high intensity battles and he’s only ever been finished once (by heel hook)before he was in the UFC. I think at 16-3 he deserves at least one more fight before kicking him to the curb.

I dont know why everyone is bashing the “Cabbanna boy”! Sure he fights like an idiot, trying to emulate wanderlei instead of taking the fight to the ground and using his world class ju jitsu. I wont bash Jorge, because no matter how stupid I think he has fought in the past, they have always been exciting fights.

I wont count the Cabbanna boy out because whenever he decides to start using his mind in the cage, and starts utilizing his bread and butter, his ju jitsu, he will give himself a great chance to win.

We are talking about a fighter who has fought most of his UFC career, with out using his main weapon (ju jitsu). Imagine wanderlei competing in the Octagon with out using his forte (striking), he wouldnt have had the success he has had either.

All, I am saying is, if Matt HUme, can get him to stick to his strategy and use his ju jitsu from here on out….then he will prove to belong in the UFC. If he wants to continue pretending to be Wanderlei, then he is going to keep loosing entertaining fights!

The guy is stupid, but dont knock his taent….The skills are there, if he ever decides to utillize them, he could be dangerous!

Just dig out an old DVD with a Rich Franklin fight on it, Gurgel is usually on the undercard or first televised bout. Then you see him walking Franklin to the ring with a face that looks like it has been attacked with a hammer.

I don’t remember who he fought for his last fight but he kept on going for the same armbar over and over again. I don’t know if he is not used to the pressure or what but it doesn’t seem like he was doing much thinking in the fight. You can tell he has BJJ skills but … he is lacking the will to win. I don’t know what it is but he clearly has good BJJ and a good physique, I just don’t know why he seems to choke in fights.

Comment by SaVaGe
2008-07-01 15:21:28

If Jorge has great BJJ, it must be from the top only. Every fight he ends up on his back, full guard, getting the crap beat out of him… no hips… no butterfly… no threat… no chance.

Miller gives him problems due to size, but that is it. Weak opponent means Jorge by decision…possible bitchslap TKO.

Can we stop with the “WAR” shit already? I’m sure many of the posters on our forum are high school kids, but this “WAR” garbage is ridiculous. I’d like to shoot the bastard who coined that irritating puke.

Sooper, the fighter you’re posting “WAR” for will never see your post, it certainly won’t help him win (especially Forrest), and it annoys the hell out of us. Do you need another reason?

Bodog’s right down the hall, kid. Maybe you’d find more acceptance from those boobs. Cheers.

Franklin is not the reason Jorge (it is a Brazilian name so have some damn respect) is in the UFC. He is there due to his KOTC fights. He was tapped to make it into the UFC right about the time that Rich made it but they wanted Jorge to wait because they were going to use him for the new show TUF they were working on.

Jorge is a good fighter and needed this change (Hume) to help him evolve as a fighter.

Good Luck Jorge!
