writers wanted
I’m a glutton for punishment, but once again we’re on the lookout for a few good writers.

Here are all the requirements:

  • Can write, understands correct English grammar and requires little to no edits
  • Possess a solid understanding of mixed martial arts
  • Able to research and mine story ideas independently
  • Can stay up-to-speed with the latest developments and turnaround quick copy
  • Demonstrate a writing style that engages readers
  • Break news with solid contacts or sources (desired … not required)

That about does it; however, there are several important things that are probably not on that list. We’ll blow up that bridge if we get that far.

Consistency is perhaps the biggest factor — we want writers who are willing to put in the time over the long-term. Not just guys/gals who think it’s cool for a month and then bail when they realize the commitment that goes into being part of our team.

To send us an email click here. Please include writing samples or links to previous work. And if you don’t have any experience or previous work to show then write something … impress us. We will not consider submissions that do not have something we can read and/or look at.

If you have any other questions feel free to email us and we’ll do our best to get back to you. Don’t take it personal if you don’t hear from us. Based on the sheer volume of responses we anticipate getting it would be impossible for us to respond to each and every interested candidate.

However, we appreciate that interest and thank everyone in advance who responds to this call.

Important note: If you have a certain promotion or “scene” that you would like to cover please include that in your email. Every little bit helps. With the sport growing so much so too does our need for more talented scribes.

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig. Too bad I had horrible marks all through high school. I know my mma and love it. Cant imagine a better job, except for Joe Silva’s, which I will have someday. Believe it.

hey mania, I know even though I took 3 creative writing courses in college and have a grasp at how to write and a love for the sport, I probably have no chance at this opportunity. It’s funny you have put this up though, my wife was saying for all the writing I do, I should get paid for it. I only write on this site by the way. This all said, just curious, what are you guys offering per piece? how many pieces are you looking for? My ________ conversations with Kevin are pretty well responded to, and I could do a weekly instead of daily. With me in the bay area, I could also cover san jose and stockton easily, and am willing to travel for events/interviews.

interviews I’d like to do include:
Tap Out crew
diaz brothers
anderson silva
caesar gracie camp
bj penn just to name a few!

MANIA, When I click on the link in the thread to send you the email, I get a Lotus Notes error (I’m at work). What is the email address we should send to?

Also, do the Top 3 posters need to submit examples still? If so, I’ll have to spend some time digging thru the archives….

Comment by ViolentMike
2008-07-01 09:06:20

Actually, I saved some of my good write ups as word documents so I’d be able to submit them right away without spending time trying to dig them up.

Also, as you know, I only post while at work and haven’t had the internet at the house for several months now. I am switching to ATT U-Verse on Sunday. I will then have the internet (again) and I’ll also finally have HDnet (again).

Also, is this to be featured on Mania, or is this another thing to try and get Craze hopping again?

Of course! And we must resume our “day before the event” phone call. I got a new phone a few days ago, but my old cell is still connected until July 24. So you can reach me on that line, and I’ll give you my new number.

That goes to you too Phil and Kevin!

U know how I roll, no discussing betting until after I see the weigh ins….Talk to u then!

I think it would be fun to go toe to toe with you on the Leben vs. Bisping fight or other fights that we disagree on (which arent many)

There’s nothing wrong with biased in this sport, it makes it easier to disagree on a fight. The only deal is they would have to be straight about their biased when writing or people will generally hate on their work.

Comment by b.w
2008-07-01 12:17:43

thats what i mean. they have to be realistic about who or what they are writing about, not just picking a team, player or a figher just because they like them. i think being straight and “keeping it real” is being un-biased.

Most people that can write well are going to look for a salary included.

High standards + no pay = poor process.

Just wanted to get it out of the way now, is there any compensation whatsoever? Revenue share? Maybe expense reimbursement(for covering shows)? I’d be more than happy to quit my (writing) job tomorrow if mania can sling a few dollars.

Mania, I’m confused. If this is not on a volunteer basis, one would assume it was an actual full time job. Is there re-location involved, or does the candidate work from home in his spare time? Could you give us a few more specifics? I may be extremely interested in this position, as I have a solid writing ability, am a huge fan of the sport, and have been toying with the idea of journalism for quite some time.

I’ve read your requirements and they seem fair. However, you have not mentioned what you are offering to the prospective writer. What are your terms? Would the writer be salaried or paid per piece? How many articles a day/week/month do you expect from the author?

I am not good at like finding a story and quoting it and all that crap, so I just usually cut n paste it to share withh the rest of u. If you just want me to write about fight/fighter analysis, I could do that all day, Happily!

I dont really have any sources either. I have 1 guy who is pretty accurate and occasionally feeds me some Intel, but not frequently and not recently.

U need someone to analyze fighths or fighters, I am your man! I would also love to do interviews, ESPECIALLY DANA WHITE!!! I would put his ass on the Hot SEAT, u can count on that!

1st Questioon I would ask Dana White: Fedor is a Farce? r u kidding me? I would be all over his ass on that 1! If I ever interviewed him, I would make him pay for that Fedor remark!

How do your picks compare to Desert Dog’s?

Id love to give it a shot, in the cali area or west coast, for free if i had to, it would be sweet! A lot of research to do. Im gonna send an email after i cut/paste some of my papers from last semesters speech (Group Discussion) class and write out a nice piecs about my fealings on MMA, some fighters, orgs etc . . . Id even do it on a “when needed” for free basis, nothing permanent.
