Quoteworthy:

“I’m a man of my word. I’m a man of my bond. I trained my ass off with my boy Kurt Pellegrino for like six weeks man. We trained balls. I was ready for five rounds against, honestly a superior technical opponent, who I was game to fight and game to beat, and you know try my best. Two days before I’m supposed to fight Jake, he pulls out of the fight. Alright cool, whatever, I’m trying to be a better man and he had a legitimate injury. So I fight Jae Suk Lim, who is actually a very good fighter. I got the best of him real quick and I didn’t get to see what he had unfortunately, because I know he was very talented, and I would have loved to have a little more time fighting him. So I go back and start training for the June card. I get a call…actually I pushed back the fight until July because I ended up hurting my knee. Two months out, my knee’s kind of twisted, and I got to fight five rounds with one of the best guys in the world. So, I’m like, I need more time to train. They’re like alright cool, you’re calling us 2 months in advance, rather than two days. So I’m like cool, I let them know July. Then Jake is like, verbatum from him and his manager, I can’t fight until after August. I messed my back up and can’t fight until after August. So I emailed Jake and said sorry about your injury, let me know when you’re ready. I’m gonna keep fighting because I love to fight every month. He emails me back, hey man I was ready for June. Ok, I don’t know what that means, but thats a little strange and odd. I’m like cool, whatever, I end up fighting a guy that I fought a long time ago who is like 3-10. A very low risk fight in Rage in the Cage. I get my knee taped up by a PT, like master blaster style. The whole time I’m like, alright I’m not gonna kick, I’m just gonna go in there and submit him real quick. What happens? I go in there and submit him real quick. I make like $2,500 bucks. Then I start hearing rumors of Jake talking shit. Before I fought in Rage in the Cage in June, I even emailed him, letting him know, hey man I have to take a low risk fight to make some money. So I’m just letting you know, I’m not avoiding our fight. My knee’s pretty messed up, but I got to fight hurt. I have proof of the email. So he’s like, cool, whatever, we’ll make it happen. Now all of a sudden he’s better, and he’s not injured until August, and he’s fighting Nick Thompson for his little fake ass little belt in July. He’s talking shit, saying I’m ducking him and this and that. I just don’t understand people. You might be able to beat me in the ring or whatever, but trust me, I’m the first guy you want to go to war with.”

Drew Fickett gives his side of the events that transpired leading to his absence from the June 14 Elite XC welterweight title fight against Jake Shields. “The Master” went ahead and took a fight just a week before the show, indicating to most that he was indeed not hurt. Regardless, it didn’t sit well with Elite XC and the promotion booked Nick Thompson to challenge Shields instead on July 26. Most recently, Fickett took a fight on short notice to tangle with Luke Stewart at Strikeforce: “Melendez vs. Thomson.” However, in doing so he would have violated the terms of his contract with MFC — he has a title fight booked against Ryan Ford in late July. Long story short, Fickett never got to fight Stewart and now MFC has scratched him from its card because of the dust up. Fickett is an original for sure. The interview is pretty funny, and worth a listen if you have some time.

You’re joking, right? “UFC Reject”? Learn what you’re talking about. He left the UFC on a win for a bigger contract.

Why would they consider Fickett for a title shot? Why the fuck wouldn’t they, when the opponent is Jake Shields. Fickett has beaten BETTER competition than Shields has. Keita, Pellegrino, Koscheck, Neer, Florian, among other lesser knowns. That’s a hell of a lot better than anyone Shields has beaten, with the exeption of the robbery against Okami and the Shooto (hint: shoot isn’t mma) decision against Sakurai.

Jake Shields fucked Fickett out of the original fight for a supposedly minor injury, and when you’re a guy like Fickett you can’t go around missing big paydays very long. He did what he had to do, obviously.

Shields has always come across as a massive faggot to me, with his post-Okami interview (where Okami was outright robbed to anyone who watched it), to pulling out of the title fight 2 days notice with Fickett for a self described ‘nagging’ injury.

If Shields wants legitimacy (which I doubt he does) then he needs to fight Fickett.

Yeah, but Nouvelle said Drew left the UFC on a win. Arguing he wasn’t a UFC reject. I like Drew. Just less now. Now I put him in the same boat as the Diaz brothers, who are exellent fighters but losers a the same time. Of course I always new that was a possible combo.

Yeah, but Nouvelle said Drew left the UFC on a win. I didn’t think that was true.

MANIA-How come I occasionally lose posts ever since the renovation. I’ll type up some golden comment, only to click ‘add comment’, and it’s not there. Aggravating!

Reading comprehension, it’s all I ask for.

Shooto, *especially* in 2002 is not and was not MMA. So even using Sakurau as an MMA win is hilarious. Even today it’s a submission/boxing hybrid.

You might as well let Fedor use his sambo record in his MMA record.

So yes, Koscheck/Florian/Pellegrino/Neer/Keita are better wins than a robbery over Okami and lol Carlos Condit.

gotta agree dude they robbed okami because he got silva disqualified in the previous fight but silva did hurt him! it would be stupid to fight on after being put on queer street! but the promotion robbed okami and shields was an ass about it how could he have not known he realy lost!
and now listening to this i think shields is a fake ass bitch

Nice to read. This is the first person I’ve read that had Drew Fickett’s side of things. How do you feel about him accepting fights left and right breaking contracts?

I hope he does get to fight Jake one day. When he does, I think that Jake would GnP him out. Although, Ficket is dangerous off his back…

As for Shields over Okami, yeah it was close, but you must also consider that Okami is a pretty big MW, and obviously, Jake is a WW so he was giving up some size in that fight.

He left the UFC on a bigger contract? the guy’s record wasn’t that impressive to get a better contract..

This guy also has a past of being an excessive drunk f*ck..he was once caught crying in an elevator for losing a fight.

Also, the loss to Koschek was a mere fluke. Not saying he doesn’t deserve the victory but, a rematch wouldn’t even come close now. Ficket on the other hand is top 10 WW so don’t expect this fight to be even close if it happens.

I’ve always like ficket, he’s a little eccentric, but always comes to fight. If he does indeed have these supposed emails, it’s kinda making “pretty boy” sheilds kinda look like kj noons. I’m a big Jake sheilds fan, but I felt the back injury was suspect to begin with. We shall see!

GENIUS! Don’t call people jackass’s, especially if you don’t know what you are talking about.

Fickett, if you LISTEN to the interview and not read some transcript, is referring that if you are his friend…he would be the “first guy you want to go to war with”

IE- He doesn’t quit, will fight anyone, etc.

Say what you want about Fickett….but what he is saying makes sense. Why would he take a RITC fight for 2K if he didn’t think he was fighting in August against Shields? Shields E-MAILED him saying he was pulling out of their June fight…THAT IS WHY he fought in a smaller show, Shields already pulled out.

Word! It seems he had second thoughts about fighting someone as dangerous Drew thats why he pulled out 2 freaken
days before the june fight. Jake man up and fight Drew.

Fickett came off like a real MEATHEAD, he may even have been drunk, unless he always sounds like an idiot. I’m with Nouvelle’s comment, Fickett was lead to believe the original fight was ‘off’ due to injury. He did what he had to do to make money.

2500 to fight for rage in the cage? not sure where i’m going with this but ufc would pay him a bit more than that maybe he should have stayed and realy made more money. cause i’m sure the better sponsors he would get fighting for the ufc would pay better during time of injury than fighting injured fo 2500 bucks. but what do i know i have the devils red hair.

Comment by MoonUK
2008-06-30 15:42:59

He’d make maybe 8000 bucks every 3-4 months if he’s lucky in the ufc, at the minute he can fight every month in different events but for varrying amounts of money, i’m sure 2500 is one of his smaller pay days.

Comment by halljam2
2008-06-30 21:36:17

The money you see posted after a fight was their fight pay, not salary. These guys are on a salary through the 3-4 month layover between fights.
