fedor sylvia affliction
Props: SukiMMA.Blogspot.com

Quoteworthy:

“He is a very strong and good fighter. He won 5 times in the championship on the UFC and he is 4th position in the world ranking. I’m proud to fight him…. I defeated a fighter who was a lot bigger than him, so I don’t think it’s too hard to fight a big fighter.”

Fedor Emelianenko talks about his upcoming heavyweight showdown with Tim Sylvia during the main event of Affliction: “Banned” at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on July 19. It will be the biggest test for “The Last Emperor” since a unanimous decision win over Mirko Cro Cop in August 2005 (although Mark Hunt is no slouch … and he defeated him via kimura in 2006).

If Chris wants to fight at Sengoku, maybe he should start off by entering the tournament, instead of going right at the Top Dog!

Karo vs. Yoshida

Karo Parisyan vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC 88 in Atlanta on Sept. 6 is in the planning stages. Karo was supposed to fight George Sitiropolous, but the George got hurt.

This is a big drop in competition for “The Heat”. He didnt want to fight top competition (Fitch) remember? Now I hope he enjoys fighting B-level fights.

Karo “you know what Kind of Gatekeeper I am” Parysian! LOL

What I did not know about karto is that he has switched camps AGAIN! He is now training with GSP, Huerta and the rest of Greg Jackson’s camp. I remember when Karo moved to Extreme Couture, we all thought that he was finally going to start training the right way, but time after time, the same fat and lazy Karo entered the Octagon.

So now, I wont get my hopes up about seeing a well conditioned Karo because at this point, I need to see it to believe it. Maybe because he got KO’ed by Alves (1st Ko loss of his careere) he may start taking his training seriously, but I wont hold my breath. Its a shame that such a young and talented guy, cant get it together!

Fight will end on the ground, Fedor by submission. I do not see it any other way. Timmy will not KO Fedor. So what will he do, submit him? Not a chance. Win a decision? No, plus the fight won’t go the distance.

Timmy has absolutely nothing to lose in this fight and EVERYTHING to gain. That is the only thing, other than size, that Tim has going for him.

I’m not saying that he should change his fighting methods if he’s winning (although if he had some bjj defense training he might have won the fight against nog, who knows?). Was it the 2 46 second wins, or maybe it was the 50 second win, no,ok then you must be talking about his 3 wins in just over a minute, not those one either eh! It has to be his 2 fights that he REALLY had trouble in, beacause they almost lasted 2 rounds. So, witch one is it that he had trouble in, because all his fights were won in the 1st round except for 2 in the 2nd.

Size does not equal wins in mma, and thats all that Timmy has on his side. This is a monumental mismatch just like:

Gsp vs. Hughes 3 was and Penn vs. Sherk, this is the same type of mismatch!

I guess the hate is fair, I remember fools claiming that Hughes and Sherk would win those fights as well!

Bad example, K1 and MMA are 2 very different things. When you see the trouble Fedor will have with Tim, you will know what I’m taking about. Fedor will get tagged just like Nog did, only Fedor doesn’t have the chin Nog has (NO ONE does). If Tim can’t KO him in the first 2 rounds, then ya, Fedor will sub him, but Tim poses WAAAAY more of a threat than the circus freak. Fedor has excellent submissions, but so does Nog and he did NOTHING against Tim for 2 and a half rounds, except take a BEATING. Can Fedor take those heavy shots and still stay standing? I don’t think so.

semmy didn’t know how to defend takedowns properly. go watch that fight, he had his knee up in the air right before fedor manhandled him to the ground. once it was on the ground he didn’t know what to do. sylvia has a lot more training defending takedowns and probably has better techniques to defend submissions and reverse position or get up

HA HA HA that’s funny, Semmy is a bum 25-14-1, he only beat cans and he lost to anyone who was any good. Ya and Fedor went to a decision with him. So I’d say he had some problems with him. You’re right Tim aint no Shilt, because Tim only lost to a FEW of the best and he CRUSHED all the cans he fought. I know you think it’s a done deal, but it is FAR from that. Tim is a bad match up for Fedor so don’t bet to much money on this fight. Tim could very well win.

HMC was bigger that’s for sure, but to compare the skill sets is laughable. I was thinking last night. WHAT IF Tim wins, and takes the wamma belt back to the UFC and gets a rematch with TIM? You know that would be something Dana could pull off, and we all know the “split” was amicable and tim will be back in the UFC. I’m not saying tim will win (which he has a good chance), but what if?

My other questions are:
elbows in affliction, yes or no
who is going to announce on the affliction show?

Comment by john
2008-06-24 10:51:37

Yes for Elbows!

Tim sylvia is the same fighter as Semmyt shilt, but not as good. The only difference is Tim has a better Sprawl, which is useless against Fedor’s clinching takedowns anyway!

Fedor had no problems with Semmy, and he will have no problems with Sylvia. THeir skill sets are the exact same. All u Fedor Haters keep hanging on to hope that Tim will cut Fedor open…That fight will not be stopped due to a cut, I guarentee that!

Fedor wins the Wamma Title, then he already Crushed the UFC champion who I love, then what u guys going to complain about next? Oh yeah, u guys will then hang on to the hjope tat Couture can beat him? Laughable!!!!

LInx: u r right, people will never stop hating!

Kevin: I think much of that is due to the cultural difference. Take Japan, for instance, they could care less about Records and they like Freakshows. The only reason Fedor even took the Choi fight was to give back to the people of Japan who made him a star, and I can respect that. I know that we dont agree, but to the Japanese fans, that was a very appealing fight!

I just hope that After Fedor embaresses Tim and beats Randy into a Pulp, that people will start giving the man his due respect. He is a class act, and 1 hell of a fighter. And his best attribute is simple…He is just a stone Cold Winner! Thats what he does, he Wins!.

Still people will say, Tim was a bum anyway, and Couture is old. Its a shame that some people are just Haters by Nature!

I can see that. Hopefully this Sylvia fight starts a trend of worthy opponents for Fedor. I’ve love to see him fight Barnett or Arlovski, both being on the same card and all. I think Arlovski might actually be the worst matchup for him with his speed, but then again Arlovski might be too timid against Fedor’s kind of pressure (see crocop)

yohnstoppable: Josh Barnett IMO is the realist threat to Fedor’s unbeaten streak..AA would be a great match up..two of the top Russian mma fighter’s sqrin off..but AA would need a 100% mistake free fight..to come out on top.

I agree Phil! Best chance of beating Fedor goes to Barnett.

The only chance Arlovski would have against Fedor, is if the old, scary, pitbull shows up. THis new, Gun shy Arlovski, wont be able to get it done. But if Andre returns to his Nasty form, he has a shot against anyone!

Comment by RobH86

Again I agree John. I do think AA has a decent chance provided the scary AA of old shows up. He could possibly outpoint Fedor in the standup but if they clinch and Fedor takes it to the ground we all know Fedor’s Sambo is better than Andrei’s.

As usual Fedor would be a heavy enough favourite.

I think Fedor is a sure thing in this one. But I hope Tim takes it. Both sides have valid arguements: Timmy’s fought more big name fighters as of late, Fedor is considered the all time best. But I have to admit, I would love it if Tim won! Despite all the Sylvia bashing, I love watching him fight (if he can bring it like he used to). He won my respect when Mir snapped his arm with that armbar, and Sylvia was mad the fight was stopped! This is a battle of two tough, bad dudes. Both worthy of respect, not derision. War to both! My heart says Tim, my wallet says Fedor.

i think this is the single most important hw fight since randy came back to fight guess who? tim silvia. its funny how timmeh gets all these big fights but not much respect. i personaly dont like tim, but im not fedors biggest fan either. i think this wll be fedors toughest fight to date. to me even if fedor wins a close split decision, i will be impressed. with all the inactivity and lack of ompetiton this isnt an easy fight. fedor saying he has already beaten 2 ufc champs in randleman and coleman and isnt interested in fighting in the ufc because of that is a joke. the fact that he beat big nog twice isnt. lets wait until this fight is over and bout 6months later to see if he feels the same way. all in all i though he as vey respectful. i wll be buying this fight ad dvring the freebie tat the ufc is offering. i should be able towatch both on the same night with ffw on the dvr. lucky me. this fight card at 39.99 is a bargain. a.a.vs rothwell is a fun fight as ell as barnett and rizzo. some are counting rizzo out, but he just beat monson quicker than josh did. you nevr know. aleks vs buentello should be a war as well. this is a cant miss event.

SYLVIA HAS NOT KNOCKED OUT ANY ONE FOR OVER TWO YEARS!!!

Sylvia hasn’t knocked out top competition for a while so really I can’t see him doing it to Fedor, but anything can happen.

Sylvia better be working on his submission defence. I can’t see Fedor knocking him out but if/when Fedor gets him to the floor it will be a very bad place for Sylvia.

Seriously Fedor takes Sylvia to the ground and its a rap. Tim has good takedown defence but that is more because of his size rather than technique. Randy exposed that once you can deal with Sylvia’s size he can be taken down at will and then Fedor will hold a serious advantage.

I getting my cable at my new place set up this weekend..and as a true mma fan..I will order Affliction : Banned and DVR the UFC Fightnight14. What a great night for MMA.

My picks:

Fedor : via something nasty

Josh Barnett : via tko. He owes Pedro one. Pedro beat him the first time..but it’s not the Rizzo..and Josh is a much better fighter today.

Arlovski: Ben Rothwell is real tuf challenge..but the russian is too atlthtic..better over skill..he will look to take Ben down..I don’t if it will be a submission/ or KO / decision. I think AA got this one.

Babablu: I’m going with my Brazilian killa..via a nasty Gracie Barra submission.

Negao : Matt Lindland is tuff..I like negao in this one.

I hate this “true mma fan” garbage, just because I’m not going to spend 40 or 50 bucks on every PPV doesn’t mean I’m any less of a fan. So if I could afford to order Affliction, that means I am more of a fan?

if you can’t afford it its understanable, but if you can and don’t your missing out on one of the biggest cards in mma history, its only 40 start saving now it will be worth it.

PhilQny: I agree with all your picks! In addition:

Rogerio Nogueira is going to snap one of Tiger white’s bones!
Buentello vs. Aleks is going to be a Heavyweight Slugfest!

Vitor will be successful in his middleweight debut over Terry Martin. I have a feeling the Vitor that Sliced Eastman open will show up, instead of the gun shy Herad case!!!!!

I guess I take personality into account too much when picking my fights cuz I want Buentello to abuse ‘baby’ Fedor. I just have no respect for that douchebag’s life choices and want him to get KTFO.

Wow!!! All this love for Tim. When he was in the UFC everyone booed him. Even this sites bloggers are always dissing him. Now he’s what? The dragonslayer? Please, keep it real people. Tim is scared to lose so he fights different than when he first started out. Problem is, he loses because of that!!!! Maybe, and I mean maybe, if he can get over the fear of losing and just bring it, he’ll probably start winning again in dominant fashion because he has the tools. We’ve seen that!

Fedor by submission!!!!!

Tim wins this…

He fights more often and better competition. I dont get why is not the fav in this fight.

Over the past two years, the man has fought AAx2, Jeff Monson, Braden Vera, RC, and Nog. Going 4-2 in that line up is impressive! When does he fight someone out of the top 20 of the HWT division (ok vera is a stretch)..but seriously.

Tim, 3 rd KO…

Fedor body locks are no match for Tim in this fight, eventually he wears out, and Fedor goes to sleep.

OR
Fedor by armbar round 1…lol…

Hong Man Choi and Semmy Schilt are arguably better than Sylvia in terms of striking, they’re bigger, and hit much harder than Sylvia (footage of Schilt stopping Mark Hunt via body kick keep replaying in my mind). I would say Sylvia could have a better ground game, but who are we kidding, he’s horrible on the ground. Fedor via armbar or kneebar, 1st round.

I saw Arlovski and Rothwell at the MMA Expo in Missassauga this past weekend during a press conference for the Affliction show. AA always looked so small on tv (compared to Sylvia), I never realized what a tank he is. Same goes for Matt Serra, he was there as well, he also looks much bigger than on tv (way more jacked too). Hendo was there, as was Shonie Carter, Gary Goodridge, Frank Trigg and Mark Hominick.

Sylvia via decision. Fedor will not be able to take him down and Tim’s reach will keep him away. Cant wait for this one. I kinda hope Tim wins so Randy will shut the hell up and retire already…If he won’t fight Nog after Tim beats Fedor, he has no place to talk about anything. Ive said it before and Ill always say it…Randy is overrated. 15-8 is not an admirable record. In a rematch with a healthy Tim, Tim wins. Fedor would destroy Randy, and so would Nog. I have Randy at #4 in the world at HW.

Fedor by armbar in the first round. Silvia will tap quickly after having his arm broken once before. Size does not matter, Silvia will crumble, Fedor is still the best. Bring on Randy!

If Tim wears an Affliction t-shirt during the scrap there’s a chance the over use of graphics could have a dizzying effect on Fedor.

As an immense Fedor fan, I regretfully admit that I don’t think Fedor will be able to finish Sylvia. That’s not to say I think it will be a difficult match for him and I’m certain he’ll pull away with a convincing win. However I’m pretty sure Sylvia is working on his defense on the feet and on the ground. I don’t really respect Sylvia at all but I know that he has a strong work ethic and he’ll gameplan very well for this fight. Look for him to have commendable submission defense on the ground, as well as keeping a good distance between him and the Champ. If the clinch game happens at all, Fedor’s going to twist the hips and end up in side control. From there, he’ll maul Tim.

I’d also like to note that Tim Sylvia has a puncher’s chance. Hell, Fujita (though that was his first title defense in PRIDE) nearly KO’d Fedor and the only reason he didn’t is because of his lack of ability to finish fights on the fight (he has some nasty neck cranks). Sylvia will not be so forgiving if he can test Fedor’s jaw like Fujita did.

I’m not a fan of either fighter. So for me, this is sort of a win-win situation.

That being said, I really don’t see how Fedor’s performances against HMC and Schilt prove *anything* as far as his ability to “destroy” Sylvia is concerned.

HMC is a kickboxer with virtually no MMA experience, which makes him a piss-poor comparison.

Schilt is a K-1 and Pancrase fighter, with something like a 5-5 record in his Pride and UFC appearances… and last I checked, he actually fought Fedor to a decision.

I don’t really think Sylvia is going to win this one (though it would amuse me if he did), but his chances aren’t nearly as bad as people make them out to be.

i agree with you on semmy, he did give fedor alot of problems, but it may also be because he is a better fighter than tim, if tim and semmy fought i would have my money on semmy.

Mark my words BIG TIM BIG TIME KO 2rnd. I know it sounds crazy but I don’t think this is a good match up for Fedor. Tim is no joke. I’m also callin’ Forrest over Rampage and my sure bet is Rashad over Chuck UD. Don’t hate the player.

There is no argument that this is the most impressive stable of HW fighters ever to grace one show. My problem with it is the way they are matched up. I believe the fight of the night will be AA vs. Rothwell. And Ben is used to fighting in a ring. Most of the other fights are mismatches, in my opinion.

It all makes sense now! I was wondering why Dana would offer up a free fight with such magnatude. He is one slippery dude…but then again we all knew that. I bet if he didn’t shave his head, he would have a black and silver crazy fro. :)
Tim’s gaping open mouth with get shut in the first round but I’m afraid that the beat down won’t be strong enough before the inevitable arm bar wins it for the one and only.
Affliction has managed to corner some serious talent and I look forward to the whole card.

What a coincidence, huh? Since Dana was too cheap to sign Fedor when he had the chance, he’s now trying to sabotage Fedor. I understand he’s just trying to protect the UFC, but it’s a shame Dana won’t let his fighters fight anyone outside the UFC. He did that before with pride, but got burned; so now it’s forbidden.
