chris leben

“I told the guys it’s a blood choke, so you don’t have to squeeze hard. So I was just kind of choking him with one arm while he’s standing up. And I told him just tap when you start to feel like you’re going to pass out. Well, he didn’t tap, and at the time I’m going wow, this guy’s pretty tough, I’m surprised he hasn’t tapped yet. He just drops to the floor in the cell. Now I’m standing there with 20 prisoners around and they’re freaking out. This guy’s laying there, snoring like crazy. I’m like ‘it’s all right, it’s all right,’ then I realize they have cameras in here. I’ve just choked this guy out in jail – I could get in trouble for this. I kept telling them, ‘he’s fine, he’s fine,’ and it took this guy a minute to wake up. Finally he woke up and we had a laugh, and luckily I didn’t get in any trouble for it. That was beginning and the ending of my inmate coaching career.”

– UFC middleweight fighter Chris Leben — who recently served an 11-day bit in Clackamas County Jail in Portland, Oregon, for a parole violation (he was also under house arrest for 25 days after his release) — tells MMAWeekly.com a little bit about the the confining experience. “The Crippler” seems to be a better man as a result and has his sights set on an August return to the Octagon. While incarcerated he had to miss a planned fight against Michael Bisping at UFC 85: “Bedlam” — perhaps that match up is still on the table for later this year.

Mania, I got a question? We were talking about that Wamma briefly yesterday. Does this site have representatives that vote for the Wamma Rankings? I only ask because I few minor league sites that cant hold your Jock have 2 votes per site. I would hope that you have at least 2 votes!

Comment by KneeToTheFace
2008-06-18 12:12:02

No offense to Mania or Jesse Holland but the reports here seem to be less than impartial, especially when it pertains to UFC vs. other promotions; not necessarily in terms of what is written but more the theme of everything that is posted is more pro-UFC and less interested in other promotions like DREAM / AFL / IFL / Affliction. This may not even be a conscious decision but it would certainly explain WAMMA’s exclusion: they’re trying to be impartial and the contributors to their rankings need to have an automatic, macroscopic attention to all things MMA.

leben is a loser, but anyways, I’m hearing the big announcement is that the UFC has been sold. This makes a little sense as to why Dana would want to talk to all his employees first!
we’ll see!!

2008-06-18 11:01:58

kevin, you wouldn’t want employees finding out from another source or reading it in the paper. Telling employees first will allay any fears they may have, while you hopefully give assurances that no one will lose their job and things will remain the same. Don’t know how that could be the big announcement though, how would it affect MMA for the next 5 years?

no problem, just didn’t want to look like a dumb ass, I know how business works, with all the competition coming out, it would be a good time to sell before the market gets saturated!

Kevin: I have been hearing the same thing but not about the McMahons purchasing the UFC. I hear some investment group is trying to buy the UFC. HOpefully its something better apealing to the fans, since we have been waiting over a week for this “Big Announcement”

At this point, what I want the announcement to be: is that the UFC will join the Wamma and let UFC fighters compete for the Wamma title, but I know thats not happening!

The best time to buy a company is during a growth stage not in it’s maturity. I just can’t imagine anyone could keep a BILLION dollar deal quiet… My guess is they have a network deal.

Comment by OJR
2008-06-18 13:22:00

Actually the best time to buy a company is when its value is mature and it is a proven commodity before the market gets “flooded.” Low risk-high reward. Now would be the perfect time to sell the UFC. Just my 2 cents.

Comment by kevin
2008-06-18 13:25:06

thats what I put about 15 minutes ago, they would sell before the market is saturated, not after 3 orgs. get tv deals and they are forced to cross promote!

Comment by tm2k
2008-06-18 13:45:05

No that is usually low risk low reward…

you don’t get crazy growth in your portfolio from value investing, you only get that from growth investing, but you are more likely to take a big hit if growth investing too…

best is a subjective term that depends on your goals and risk tolerance…

If that TBA is Sergei?..I will be sooo happy!..

Jarcre is turning out to be an amazing fighter, and he will probably win the gradprix..

Trust me, I would be so thrilled if Sergie were fighting Hunt, that I might end up going to see it in person.

Like u said DREAM 5 will be amazing as well. As of now DREAM 5 is stacked, I expect DReam 6 tro become just as stacked by the time the event rolls around. DReam 5 will crown a champion out of Diaz vs. Sakurai, I expect another title to be awarded at DREAM 6

I absolutely adore Japanese MMA.

Cant wait till my boy Akahiro Gono gets back in the Octagon!

I hope that that’s not just speculation, because I have been waiting YEARS to watch Hendo prove that he is better than Franklin.

Also, I can’t wait to see Leben KO Bisping!!!

Leben throws harder than Bisping, and he can take a better punch. Man, I typed soooo much about this fight when it was first booked for UFC 85. The two of them MUST fight each other and the sooner the better.

As for Chris choking out someone is prison, that is just CLASSIC Chris Leben stuff LOLOL.

ALSO IN THE ARTICLE, they mention that Leben is rumored to be on the July Fight Night card. But he said that he would not have enough time to prepare. He wants to focus on being the best Leben possible in the octagon. He said that he is looking for a return in August. UFC 89 would most likely be taking place………………in August!

Hope to God Leben takes it or I’m going to feel the fool. As a side note, jokes about what you did in jail are kinda stupid (I know from personal experience). Chris needs to let people forget about that and just move on.

I have heard the rumor that abput hendo/Franklin as well. I read earlier that the Bisping/Leben fight is a go!

I think that Rich has a great shot at beating Hendo. Granted Hendo has heavy hands but it is usually the haymaker that hurts people while Rich throws technical punches very hard. I believe Hendo to have the wrestling advantage but Rich has good submissions. We all know Hendo can espcape sub attemepts after watching him fight Nog…should be a great fight and I see Rich wionning this fight via TKO in the 3rd.

Comment by ViolentMike
2008-06-18 11:04:43

REALLY?? Out of Hendo’s 7 losses, he has NEVER been KO’d or TKO’d. His chin is as good as it gets. I think that Hendo has the strength to KO Rich, but the same can’t be said for Franklin KO’ing Hendo.

Rich is not the best in the clinch. Hendo lives in the clinch with his grecco roman dirty boxing. Or course I am biased toward Hendo so I will again let that be known. But putting my biases aside, I still see Hendo coming out on top when he fight Franklin. He is MUCH stonger. Rampage is a beast and Hendo not only hung with him but it was a very competitive fight. I will admit that Rich is the more techical striker, but Hendo’s face has been hit with everything outside of the kitchen sink.

REALLY can’t wait for them to fight!!!!!!!

What do you guys think the odds would be? Since most US fans don’t know too much about Hendo outside of his losses to Rampage and Silva I think that the odds would open pretty close. I can imagine them opening at -115 each. But then most people would be betting on Franklin and the odds on Hendo would swing towards the positive. At least that’s what I think. So I would be waiting to place my bet on Henderson.

VM: If Hendo odds start at -115, I will love all the stupid fans who bet on Rich forever because I will get ritch off of betting on Hendo!

no chance Rich can beat Hendo. Rich may be the more technical striker but so what, Rich can not knock Hendo out, it just cant be done. on the other hjand it takes one punch from Hendo to put rich to sleep. Hendo will dictate where the fight goes cause Rich cant outwrestle him…Hendo will end the fighth Tko style begining with a straight right or a left hook!

Yawn @ Bisping haters.

Leben has clubs for fists but takes forever to throw them. You also don’t need to KO someone to win the fight.

For every one of Lebens slow punches thrown, Bisping will throw three.

I can see Leben getting slow worn down then KTFO with a flying Knee :)

I am by no means a Bisbing hater. I am a fan and have been for some time. He looks great at 185. I thought he was going to have a harder time with Day and he destroyed him. It is just a fact that Leban has a iron chin and hits harder. Leban also has an extremely underrated ground game. I believe Leban has the advantage anywhere the fight goes… Leban by KO… Picture me rollin…

Leben vs Bisbing is a lock …now that the fans have given their approval, this fight is bound to happen.
I think, much to chagrin of Bisbing…
Although I’m sure Bisbing feels he can beat Leben, he’ll be in for a rude awakening.
Leben’s open southpaw stance will confuse Bibing… he’ll be a victim of a left hook… & not much more b4 the ref steps in.
