“The mood of rivalry between us is getting strong. We see each other here all the time, and I’ve known his game for awhile. Ever since he submitted Roberto Traven at the UFC, in 2001, he’s been known. But you’ll see: I’m going to be all over him standing, I’m better than him both standing and on the ground. In the fight with Sylvia the way to the win was clearly on the ground, but against Mir I’m going to show more of what I’m capable of to the world and my fans. I’ll always respect him as an adversary, of course. Even more so since he’s trained with Demian Maia and Robert Drysdale.”
“Grueling eight-hour filming sessions, seven days a week” on the set of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 is beginning to create some heat between UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former division kingpin, Frank Mir. The two currently serve as coaches on the Spike TV mixed martial arts reality series, which will debut on September 17, and will go toe-to-toe for the belt most likely on New Year’s Eve weekend.

I for one am glad they have already started filming the show, they seemed to be a bit behind with the last season.
Big Nog is going to beat Mir, I feel pretty confident saying that. Mir is strong though, but it doesn’t matter because I’m bias when it comes to Nog. lol
Me too LOL, I just can’t see Mir winning this standing or on the ground. It’s going to be interesting how Nog does on the show though, his english is still very fresh of the boat, how will he corner his team is still a big question for me…
I actually think that Nog’s english is not that bad. Its actually better than Wandy’s and all the other Brazilian fighters that still train in Brazil.
As for the fight, what can I say, another mis match fight between the coaches of a TUF show. There is NO WAY that Nog can loose this fight. Nog is better than Mir at EVERYTHING.
Nogs stand up will be better, his conditioning will be much better, his chin is the best in the game, and Mir will be outclassed on the ground!
All the coaches fights on TUF are usually b.S mismatched fights and this wont be any different.
Think about it:
Tito beat Ken (MISMATCH)
BJ penn beat Jens (Big mismatch)
Rampage vs. Forrest (mismatch)
John, Nog can definitely speak and understand English, the problem I see is in the heat of battle will he be able to explain to his fighters what to do? I still think he might have some language barriers, hope I’m wrong though.
Linx: I see what you are saying and it is a great point. I am sure he will bring in an english speaking assistant…If not, his fighters may be in trouble. lol
As for the audience (us),we wont have a problem understanding him in the shows interviews. He wont need subtitles like the jibberish speaking Bisping needed! lol
By the way:
Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia will be a title fight! for the first ever Wamma Title!
If you dont know what wama is, I suggest finding out, I dont feel like explaining it right now!
john, where did you find this out? I’ve looked around and was only able to find this information posted by Mania in one of the blogs and it sounded like the guy was joking.
mmajunkie or a couple of other sites posted it today!
It’s really not a big deal. And it’s old news. 5 ozs. ran a story last week I think.
Mania, no need to act all Dana White ish about the competition. Everyone knows u run sh*t! lol
you’re crazy, they are pushing this show so hard on me now, it’s sickening! I can only hope that this will be better than the abomination that is in this season!
hey! big nog will submit to mir!
he would definitely cry for help!
also, brandon vera deserves a title shot!
vera against nog- vera will crush nog
He is absolutly right, can’t even think what to comment other than that!
I know I’m like bombs in that im bias because Nog is the man IMO, but I will say that Mir is a badass on the ground but compared to Nog everyone looks slouch in the ground game. That said I think Nog is also a much more technical striker as of late and will use that to frustrate Mir and even finish him off.
it’s Nog’s ground game that will keep the belt for him…even against Big Lesnar, and yes, we all know that at some point in time Lesnar will get a shot, I’m calling it late of 09.
I still don’t see lesner getting through crazy horse, lesner is just big and strong, granted he has wrestling background (a great one) but a smart and experienced MMA fighter such as heath will capitalize him on his weakness (standing up).
idk, man. Heath was blanketted by O’Brian pretty badly. Lesnar is a much better wrestler than O’Brian, and I really don’t see Heath staying off his back.
IMO, it sucks to have a champ that gets his ass kicked the whole fight then pulls a sub and wins.
I disagree. I love watching Nog Elway fight. He’s mostly well known for seemingly impossible comebacks, so even when he’s down you know he has a great chance.
It’s similar to how Couture is so popular due to his underdog wins. When you see a guy you can never count out, it is just that more exciting
But Couture would dish out as much as he’d take. Nog seems to take alot before he pulls off a win. I still like to see his fights though.
NOg-Elway! I LOVE IT! Its actually really accurate. Nogueira can beat anyone not named Fedor!
Its a shame the UFC doesnt have any really appealing opponents to match him up against! He is a legend, and he deserves big named opponents like Greedy-Couture!
To quote Big Nog:
“I played his game for ten minutes and he couldn’t finish me, he played my game for two minutes and it was done”.
What you say by getting *$$ kicked is Tim not being able to knock him out, but nog being able to submit him. Who got their *$$ kicked?
Oh come on linx, Nog was getting dropped and rocked left & right. All credit to him for surviving and pulling off a sub. But just look at the difference in Couture/Tim than Nog/Tim, Couture dominated Tim for 5 rounds and even dropped Tim.
couture fought an injured Tim and couldn’t finish him, nog fought a healthy tim and finished him. Nog has great stand up, but Tim is much bigger than him and works his jabs great, which kept nog in the outside for most of the fight. Nog has been in some of the best battles MMA has to offer, and came through in most of them (with the exception of Fedor). To say he got his *$$ beat and not acknowledge the master that he is its just nonsense. Sorry, but I don’t see how he got his *$$ beat, I only see how he came through and beat Tim.
I agree in, some of the best battles. And I do acknowledge he good at what he does. But he has yet to look good in the UFC. He needs to do the dominating in his fights.
Trust me JV, he’ll dominate Mir standing or on the ground.
And he also dominated Heath, he got caught with a wild kick, but he dominated the whole fight…
How could this even be a discussion?
Nog is a freaking GOD in this sport! The old Frank Mir wouldnt have stood a chance, and the new one really doesnt stand a chance.
He will be outmatched in EVERYTHING!!!
This will be a good win for nog, he actually wont get beat up in the process!
As Usual, GREAT POST LINX!!!
Not a fan of Nog or Mir then?
Couture didn’t finish Tim but the fight was still more exciting than seeing Tim throw his big slow haymakers at Nog and just totally dominating Nog to seeing Nog get a lucky submission. Randy’s Stand up is much better than Nog’s and Randy’s wrestling is way better than Nog’s. I would feel safe to bet money on Randy against Nog because Randy’s submission defense is pretty good. By the way Linx, if Randy would have fought a totally healthy Tim maybe the fight would have been a little competitive but Randy would have still pulled out the win. I understand that everyone is mad at Randy and says he is selfish (He IS) but I never knock a fighters ability just because I don’t like them. If you think about it, it’s actually pretty shallow. I hate Fedor but I’m not going to deny that he is #1 until someone proves otherwise. I hate when people confuse their emotions with reality.
what was lucky about his submission, thats what he has done his whole carrer so where was the luck?
“but I never knock a fighters ability just because I don’t like them”
You never do that huh? Did you not just say it was a “lucky submission”? And where do you get the idea that I’m knocking a fighters ability? I’m just stating facts. Tim wasn’t healthy when he fought randy, what did I say that was disrespectful to randy? On another note, randy is the one ducking a fight with Nog, not the other way around buddy. Welcome to reality
LInx: For anyone to say that Nog got lucky, just doesnt know Nog. He has made a career of this. He will beat anyone not named Fedor, including Couture and Barnett if they fought for a 3rd time.
Calling Nog’s submission lucky is foolish and Ignorant. He has legend who has made an enbtire career out of surviving and then Finishing you. He is a true champion, and I loved his performance against Tim…It showed what a true champion he is!
Linx: that Nog Quote you posted above is one of my favorite quotes. He may not know english that well, but it was a great quote!
for sure John
Well all I know is that he wouldn’t be so fortunate against Randy. He would not be able to submit Randy like he did Tim and so many others and I wasn’t knocking Nog’s ability. I know he is good on his back but I’m just saying to take a beating like he did and to get a submission there has got to be some degree of luck involved. Then again, who hasn’t submitted Tim. Mir, Arlovski, and now Nog. Who has out wrestled and controled Sylvia like Randy did. Tim is much bigger than his opponents and has a reach advantage and that is why he gives people hell. Randy dominated him like no one else has ever and he was able to do it without a submission. By the way, if Tim was so injured then he should have never taken the fight. An excuse is like an, well, you know.
Jimmy, just some advice. If you don’t know a fighter’s history, don’t talk about them like you do. I did that once and got the end short of the stick (back when I was dreaming that serra could somehow beat GSP for a second time, I didn’t follow gsp’s history). If there is some type of “luck” about nog’s submissions, than his entire career has evolved around luck. What a lucky guy huh?
Seriously, stop saying luck, it’s so disrespectful and you’re still trying to defend that you’re not knocking nog’s ability?
Second, you say randy would tool nog, but randy is the one running away from the UFC just like crocop (I lost respect to both BTW for doing just that). If randy can tool nog, why doesn’t he man up and show us what he can do against big nog? Oh right, he’s trying to fight fedor… (now that’s what I call an excuse).
You say Randy is running away just like Cro Cop. Come on,if he wants to test himself against the best then why should he take the best’s leftovers. He said the fight doesn’t make sense to him because he is forty something years old and he wants one last fight and he wants the fight to be with the best. Now will he lose to Fedor? Proabably, but the man has paid his dues and came out of retirement and fought twice for the fans, shouldn’t he be able to chase his dream and fight Fedor? Oh wait, he has to fight a guy that Fedor beat twice first and then maybe by the time he is fifty he can fight Fedor. Cro Cop has had his ass handed to twice him in the UFC and Randy has won his last two so that was a horrible analogy buddy.
if your comparing fighters jimmy, barnett beat the shit out of randy and ricco beat him as well, two guys that nog has beaten.nog is considered one of the best all time h.w’s and randy does not want to fight him or it would have already happened.
Well I replied to your comment but it was moderated. Maybe you’ll be able to read it next week some time.
Jimmy: Trust me when I tell you that Randy wants no part of Nogueira. The only reason he ran from the UFC was because he would have had to fight Nog, he would have lost, and his greedy ass would have missed out on the Super pay day for the Fedor fight.
Nogueira is a heavyweight Legend!
Lets face it, Randy has not had a stellar career at Heavyweight! He has never beaten:
Nog
Fedor
Barnett
Arlovski
Nog has competed against the top guys and has been successful. I think Randy’s greatest wins were at light heavyweight, at heavyweight he was so, so!
i’m sure it was a good one, i hate that too jimmy
Jimmy, be frank, do you really think a fight between fedor and randy is going to happen? Randy will never be able to go against fedor. dana knows this, fedor knows this, and randy knows this. by the time all the legal issues are set aside randy will probably be 48. But he doesn’t want to fight while he still can, he doesn’t want to man up and face Nog. He can’t fight fedor due to legal issues, but he can fight Nog, and to be frank, nog would give randy a run for his money. Randy came back to fight for the fans??? What about that load of money he got for signing a new contract with the UFC? dude, I can see you are too funny of a dude, seriously. I can’t continue to debate with someone that only believes hype, need someone to debate that at least goes on facts. Keep thinking Randy is the greatest of all time! yes ppl, someone with a 16-8 record is the greatest of all time!!! (being sarcastic here)
I’m saying recently Roy. It’s like Randy has improved even since he last fought Chuck. Besides, didn’t Barnett get kicked out of the UFC for juicing?
I never said Randy was the greatest of all time. All I’m saying is that he would be a bad matchup for Nog. Just as Wanderlei is for Rampage and Rampage is for Chuck. Don’t put words in my mouth. Didn’t I just get through saying that Fedor is number one until proven otherwise. I don’t even like Fedor so I’m trying to be real as I can. Based on Nog’s recent performance getting mauled by tim until he got the submission. I think Randy would beat Nog right now. I didn’t say he was the best LINX.
Jimmie, you got it the other way around….Nog is a bad match up for Randy.. Nog has been calling Randy out for months now, where’s Couture at? B*tching, thats where!
I think Nog learned English just to call Randy out.
Jimmie, I am going to be dead honest with you. Couture has never fought a heavyweight like Nogueira, while Noguiera has faced better then Couture and been successful….for years!
I really believe that Nog would submit Randy. Standing up, Nog might be a little bettrer than Randy. Randy’s strength is the ground game, and he will want no parts of going to the ground with Randy. Believe that! Randy does not have the chin that Nog has and Randy isn’t half the Warrior that Nog has proven to be throughout his entire career! The only advantage I give to Randy is in the Clinch.
Nog might be a worse match up for Randy then Fedor, believe it or not!
Standing up Randy hung with Tim Sylvia and that’s something Nog couldn’t do. Randy has is has a better standup and we all know he is a world class wrestler. If Randy could keep the fight standing he wins and that is my opinion. Of course Nog’s career looks better on paper but if you look at the way Randy dominated Tim and the way Tim dominated Nog then you got to be crazy to think that Nog’s standup is better than Randy. But of course everyone is going to resort back to Tim saying he was injured and that he shouldn’t have took the fight. I would say the same thing if I had just been thrown around like a little girl by a 43 year old man.
There is no way that these guys can convince me that they dislike each other lol
hahah Agreed pat, Mir is a very together, professional, and intelligent fighter who respects all great fighters, and big Nog is well… Lets put it this way, he would be one of my top choices of fighters to sit on my couch with, have a beer, and watch fights.
I ran into Big Nog in Rio sometime in ‘04. The dude is mad cool man. We had brief convo..I’m a fan his..it’s hard not to root for the guy.
PhilQny: At the time did you know u were talking to Rodrigo? I cant tell them apart except for the indentation scar on the back of Rodrigo that Rogerio does not have….from being run over by a truck!
I wonder if Rogerio ever poses as Rodrigo? I would for the ladies! lol
John, I forget which pride it was, but once Rogerio stepped in and was introduced as Rodrigo because Big Nog was late and didn’t get to the Saitama arena on time to be introduced in the beginning of the show, that is the only time I can remember of them trading places. But Big Nog has some type of grayish look on his left eye, that’s how I can tell them apart besides the scar on his back.
John: I was coming out of the Gracie Barra academy and I was walking towards the bus stop..when 1 block up towards the direction I was walking in I saw a ” Minotauro ” sitting by a cafe. As a MMA fan..I approached respectfully…like ” YO whad up..Nog..and it wasn’t Rodrigo..it was Rogerio..I spoke to him..then Rodrigo comes towards us..and I sdaid ” YO whad up “..and Rodrigo and I chatted for like two minutes..then he went inside aGNC type store..and I contunied on my way home…mad hyped..like what are the odds Phil..from Queens NY..would run into the Nog Bro’s..
PhilQny: Damn, u ran into both of them..Great Story Phil…your Jaw must have dropped like WTF?
Linx: OMg! I swore to my brother that they did that in PRIDE (while we watched it), I think I know exactly what u r talking about, I wasnt sure that they really did that…now I am sure of it. Thats so funny! Thanks for the heads up.
I forgot Big Nog has the eye problem as well.
I wonder, if they walk around New York city, how many bystanders actually know who they are. Would they got mobbed, say walking around Manhattan? I no its not Chuck Liddell style, but I wonder how many people actually recognize an MMA God like Nog in person?
WTF..is what I said dude. Both of them where super cool. And for ” Jimmy_dean ” Lucky Submission??? I’ve heard of a lucky punch? There is no such thing as a lucky submission. Minotauro has ” 19!!!! ” submissions in ” 31!!!! ” fights. What a Lucky Guy?hummmmm….
Hell, I wish I was half as lucky in life as Nogueira has been! lol
Jimmie, you sound real dumb on this thread buddy. Leave this thread, go to another one and re-group, sound silly today! lol
For a fighter to get beaten like Nog did and to pull a submission out of it is pretty lucky. I know Nogs’s history and I like Nog but he was lucky he won that fight because he was pretty close to getting knocked out. I know it, you know it, we all know it. Maybe to say he was pretty fortunate intsead of lucky would be a better way to say it. But like I said before, Sylvia’s two prior losses before he fought Randy came from submissions so it wasn’t like Nog was the first person to do it. An opinion is an opinion. Do what you want with it. This is why we blog. For the Record I do think that Nog will beat Mir because Nog’s standup is a lot better and so is his BJJ. I think Nog will either win by KO or TKO and this time luck won’t have anything to do with it.
After a post like that, I am sorry but I can not possibly believe that you have follwed Nog’s career. Start watching him from like 2003…
When he took all cro cop had (when he was on the top of his game) and submitted cro cop!
See his fight against Sergei Kharitonov (IMO top 10) in the 2004 Heavyweight Grand Prix, and then the Hearing fight from the same tournament when he finished him with an anaconda choke.
See the shockwave Pride vs. K-1 when he got slammed all over the matt by Bob Sapp!
See his fights with Barnett or him Dominating Wabricio Werdum
This cant all just be luck dude?
Big NOg is absolutely better than mir on the Feet, i want to see them fight to the ground & see who better on the mat
Is it just me, or is anyone else not really that excited for this season, or to see them fight each other.
I agree that Nog will outbox Mir on the feet, and I think he’ll finish him late in the 2nd or the 3rd. Mir isn’t known for his gas tank, and I don’t see him going 5 rounds with Nog. He’ll have to finish Nog early which, while possible for someone as good as Mir, isn’t likely imo against someone as durable as Nog
i smell a submission!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually think that their BJJ is so close that neither will get a sub. Nog will beat Mir on the feet.
you think so? i think mir will attempt to stand with nog. i do agree that nog has better standup and will probably push mir to the limit on their feet but they are both super skilled bjj guys that it will be very technical on the ground! i just think one of them will pull of something crazy when it does finally hit the ground !
haha no way mir’s jits is near the lvl of nog. im not bias at all because mir is one of my fav fighter…. man nog got the best jits for heavyweight. but dont get me wrong because mir’s jits one of the best
Agreed!!
Nog takes this, easy.
I’m also putting my money on Herring.
Wrong bet dude, Lesnar on this one…
I have to agree with Big Nog on this one. I respect Mir as a fighter, and he seems like a good guy, but he shouldn’t even be getting a title shot right now. The only reason he is - is because of his name, and the fact that he will be entertaining as a coach on TUF. As far as coaching goes, that will be a great season.
The best submission fight in the heavyweight division ever, remember my words
rewatch fedor v nog…. fedor purposely took the fight to the ground to show that sambo is better than jits…
but this match is definitely up there for best jits. but both fighter knows that their best chance of winning is on their feet, so im also certain taht this fight is gonna be on their feet
Frank has always been my favorite fighter even when he was out of the competition for a while. I know he is going to bring it and I know he can win this fight, but he has to train hard and comes up with a good game plan cause Nogueira is not an easy fighter on the ground or standing. As a huge Mir’s fan I cant wait to see him win the title after everything he went through. I am going to be rooting for him.Go Mir!!I am gonna my house on you.
Look at the opponets Nog has fought and then look at Mir’s, nough said.
Have I missed something, what did Mir do to deserve a title shot. How the hell is that fair. It really is a joke how the UFC decides who gets a title shot. Sometimes it’s not how hard a guy fights or who he has beaten but how popular he is. This really is soo wrong, it just goes to show how shite the heavyweight division is in the UFC.WTF.
must of you are not giving mir a chance, i for one think mir will take this one. i have nothing to back that up with, but just my opinion
My point was, what has Mir done to deserve a title shot. I am not to bothered about his chances. I do not think he is in the same league as Nog, and I do not think he has done enough to justify a title shot. Typical UFC, some fighters have to work their @sses off, but when you are a UFC favourite, you really do get looked after.
i dont think sambo its better than jiu jitsu at all i just think fedor is the best and i dont see anybody in the ufc winning to fedor do you guys??
I agree. Fedor is beatable like anybody..but with the current stable of UFC HW’s..nah. If Randy fights Fedor in a cage I give Randy the best chance to beat then anybody next to Josh Barrnett..We will all be able to size Fedor up correctly after hisd fight against Tim Slyvia..The former UFC HW champ.
Phil: What u said is the best reason why this fight is so big IMO. I look at Fedor like he is the heavyweight GOd of mma. IMO, I could see him smashing Sylvia! I think of how lethal Fedor’s ground n pound is and now I picture it with ELBOWS added to his arsenal for the 1st time, and I can really see him doing serious Damage to Tim’s face.
Tim is a good striker, with reach, and a good sprawl, but its nothing new to Fedor, he has already beaten Semmy Shilt (who in my oppinion would whoop Tim Sylvia’s ass). Tim has the same skill set as Shilt. Since the Shilt fight Fedor has gotten a lot better (it was his 1st PRIDE fight).
Also, Fedor doesnt go for the traditional wrestler takedowns, so Tims spral will be useless againnst Fedor’s takedowns.
All Fedor has to do to win the fight is come out with that NASTY left (lead hand) semi diving hook of his, it will stun Sylvia. Fedor can then clinch, twist his magic himps and take Tim down…Tim will NEVER recover from being takedown.
What I like about this fight is it will shut all the FEdor bashers up. After he dominates Tim worst then how Randy and Nog beat him, HE MUST START GETTING THE RESPECT THAT HE DESERVES!
IMO, People with the best chance of upsetting Fedor would be:
Josh Barnett (I think he would have a great chance),
then Randy (I give him like a 20 % chance)
Of Course Everyone is beatable, but Fedor is just a winner. Great fighters are like Great athletes, there are a lot of them but the Elite wons are just stond cold winners who find a way to win. Thats where I see Fedor, he is a winner, and beating him is possible, but unlikely. Barnett has the best chance!
i agree i always thought it would be barnett that beat him, and i think semmy would kick tim’s ass.
“All Fedor has to do to win the fight is come out with that NASTY left (lead hand) semi diving hook of his, it will stun Sylvia. Fedor can then clinch, twist his magic himps and take Tim down…Tim will NEVER recover from being takedown.”
John: That is how it will go down!! That leading left hook of Fedor’s is NASTY.
Winners find a way to win…and haters find a way hate.
I could see Fedor dish out (Page Qoute) ” can of ass-whooping”to Tim..and the Fedor Hater’s..will find a way to hate..you and I..we fly at a different altitude.
Thats why I miss you when u arent on this site PhilQNY! U r a true positive contributor to this site!
I want to know your thoughts on jacre’s performance, I found it amazing!
Barnett wouldn’t stand a chance folks…
I have to disagree. I think Barnett would stand a very good chance, he has all the right tools. If that was Barnett instead of Hunt in that position, I beleive believe Barnett would have definately of had Fedor tapping. As above, I also put Barnett above Randy.
Mir doesn’t have the greatest chin in the world and Nog does. I hope Nog comes in light and quick. He’s been looking kind of slow in the UFC.
mir has been rocked but has he been knocked out? nog has been rocked many times too
Vera knocked him out.
Big NOG’S has Anderson silva on his stand up game NOG’S a tech on the mat NOGS got this in the bag..
im going with mir for this one i dont know how hes gonna win but hes probly not gonna submit nog
vera didn’t knock him out. stoppage by the ref. i agree he was getting the crap beat out of him, but he wasn’t knocked out.
I can see Mir pull this off.
i think that noguieras fighting is for cowards!
Frank mirs going to beat him fair and square and that mir is going to make noguiera submit!
but the one fighter who trully deserves to face noguiera is none other than brandon vera who was screwed by a fucking referee the last time around!
vera against noguiera- vera will win it by ko
mir will kill noguiera!
