Former WEC lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough will likely take on the undefeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (8-0) in a bout that will possibly determine the next 155-pound number one contender.
News of the match up surfaced at a recent Ring of Fire event in Denver, Colo.
MMAmania.com was unable to confirm the actual date and location of the showdown at this time; however, with three title fights slated for WEC 35 on August 3 it’s possible that this bout will be tacked on to the WEC 36 card that features the middleweight rematch between 185-pound champion Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen.
McCullough most recently won a lackluster split-decision victory over Kenneth Alexander at WEC 34: “Faber vs. Pulver” earlier this month. It was his first fight since losing his title to Jamie Varner via technical knockout at WEC 32 back in February.
Cerrone returned from an eight-month suspension (diuretic) to submit Danny Castillo with a fancy first round armbar at WEC 34. The Ring of Fire veteran defeated Kenneth Alexander via submission (triangle choke) in his WEC debut back in November 2007.
However, it was later ruled a “no contest” because of the positive test for the banned substance.
The fight between “Razor” and Cerrone has all the makings to be a barnburner — both fighters are accustomed to finishing fights … albeit in much different fashions recent;y. McCullough is a Muay Thai specialist and Cerrone is a submission machine who also happens to know a thing or two about striking (he’s a S-1 Muay Thai United States Champion).
Regardless, whoever comes out on top will likely punch his ticket to challenge the winner of the championship bout between reigning division boss Varner and Marcus Hicks next month at WEC 35.

Good fights in the midst in the WEC!
Is this the same guy from the tapout episode?
yep.
Thanks I thought so…Kid’s got talent!
No doubt. I have been a fan of Cowboy since I first seen him on TapOut. I am happy that I gave that show a chance. Once you get past those bumbling idiots, they actually show some good inside MMA stuff. I enjoy finding out about the lives of these young up and coming fighters.
If the same Razor Rob shows up for this fight that showed up to fight Alexander, I expect Cerrone to pull off the upset!
i’ve been a big cowboy fan since that episode as well. i feel teh same way as mike. those tapout guys (well except punkass, he seems cool) are idiots.. but the mma stuff they show is awesome. plus we get to see what goes in in some of the more recognizeable gyms across the country.
cowboys gonna eat him up
You’re joking right. I’ve trained with Rob several times lately and he is definitely more focused. Rob will punish Cowboy.
Ive trained with cowboy. Rob never stood a chance. Cowboys stand up and ground game is in tip top condition. Thats why dull razor rob was destroyed.
I like Razor Rob. It would be cool to see him get a rematch the strap back. But Varner put the wood to him pretty good last time. It will be interesting to see what he does different if he does get the rematch.
BOYCOTT RAZOR ROB!!!
LOL
I think Varner has his number like Silva has Franklin’s to be honest. He was all over him in that fight beating him at his own stand up muay thai style.
Good analogy. You may be right.
Cowboy is the man. You call Rob the Muay Thai specialist, but Cerrone is 22-1 in Thai fights. I think Cerrone is more well rounded and with a underated stand up game he’ll use it to set up a takedown and submit Rob in the first.
Good stuff. I did not know that.
Cowboy is NOT 22-1 in Thai fighting. He is 22-0-1. Has never lost, he had 1 no contest because of an illegal elbow strike.
As far as him and Razor Rob, it sounds like it will happen in Sept. Donald has already signed his half of the contract, they are just waiting on Razor.
It should be a hell of a fight, I hope Donald shows more of his stand up skills, he has been training the last couple of weeks with Bang Ludwig in Denver to further sharpen his skills. Based on the way Razor has looked his last couple of fights, I think Cowboy wins pretty easily.
I was in co co nout creak this weekend and Monson was training at ATT, he’s not that hurt
how much for ppv?
WEC events are free on the Versus Network. You should have it on your cable/satellite package.
Cowboys the real deal… he’s gonna make a name for himself, starting with a whoopin’ of McCullough.
Cerrone vs Faber, New Year’s Eve, FTW. I’d put my duckets on Cerrone, and I know vegas will pay me good!
Cerrone would have to cut an extra 10 lbs and he already looks pretty undernourished at 155…
I like Hicks to overpower Varner and take the title with a standing guillotine in round two.
I t may be a good fight….it may not. It depends on which Razor Rob shows up. He looked pretty bad in his last fight.
I agree.
he looked to cautious, i felt. he wasn’t laying it out there, like he was looking to just win the fight by decision and not take any chances.
Cerrone is a much better MMA fighter than Razor and if anything the Muay Thai is a draw. Can’t wait for this fight. Cerrone is one of my favorite fighters.
YES!!! Razor Rob will be embarrassed yet again!!! Go Cowboy.
Cowboy is NOT 22-1 and in Thai fights, he has never lost. He is 22-0-1. His 1 no contest was because of illegal elbows.
The Razor Rob vs. Cerrone fight sounds like it will happen in Sept. Rob has not signed the contract as of yet
I too am a big Cerrone fan since I first saw him surface on Tapout. Guy is incredibly athletic. He makes me think of GSP when I saw him early on. You just knew that guy was going to be something and I get the same vibe from Cowboy.
I have to add that I have the same overall feeling about Tapout. However, its talent like this guy that makes the antics of the hosts bearable. That and Punkass is “cool as a cucumber” and has so much more charisma than his counterparts without being flamboyant.
Either way, I am glad to see Cerrone getting the opportunity to move up the ranks.
COWWWWBOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYY!
Donald has proven himself in every fashion! He has come a long way and finally gets his shot @ Rob. Razor has been avoiding signing a contract to fight him because he knows the talent DC has. Donald is the most humble fighter alive… Anyone, anytime, any place… He doesn’t walk around with an attitude!
With Rashad in his corner and Tito in Rob’s corner, makes for an interesting night! This is the fight that the WEC has been waiting for! Go get him Junior! It’s time to step up and take what is yours! The Belt! By new Years 2009, you will have reached your goal! Don’t ever stop! UFC will be knocking!
I dont know about robs muay thai, cerrone has 16 ko’s, and being the taller lankier bigger stronger fighter imo has the standup advantage, also believe the ground game of cerrone is more advanced than robs, after watching robs past 2 fights, he appeared out of shape, and in his last fight was gassed halfway through round 1.
Cerrone will take this fight, no doubt,,,
Standing up, or on the ground…..Cerrone will dominate fully!!!
Rob’s spirit was broken when Varner beat the shit out of him and made it look easy!!!!! Sometimes guys can’t come back from that shit!
