yea dude i’m definately rutin for fitch just because hes the underdog….but in reality GSP has no holes in his game for fitch to attack, hence, his all round wrestling is top notch, as well as his all round stand-up…however if there is ANYONE in 170 who deserves this more then anyone it’s fitch….a lucky punch is really his only hope which i hope he can pull off…but i personally don’t think he stands a chance as well as anyone else in 170…after the first Serra fight GSP hasn’t been takin ANYONE lightly with impressive wins over koscheck, hughes AGAIN!! lol, then of course his tko victory against sera…so idk man i’m hopin Fitch can shock the world but my money is definately on GSP

Yeah Fitch!!!! As a fan of the sport, I really do not know how someone can not be a fan of Jon Fitch. He is all class all the time and has a great work ethic.

As for the fight with GSP, it will of course be Fitch’s toughes fight to date. The question is will it be GSP’s toughest fight to date. Personally, I think that it will be his 3rd toughest fight, or tied for his 2nd. GSP’s first fight against Hughes, he has himself beat mentally before the fight, and he was fighting his “Idal”. Then it comes down to which is the tougher fight, an out of shape BJ where GSP won a decision, or will Fitch prove to be a tougher fight?

I would be SHOCKED to see this fight end in the first or second round. Of course, I will be rooting 110% of Fitch, as always, but I see GSP as being able to win by stoppage or decision. I am tying to think of how Fitch can win, and the only thing I can come up with is to out-work and “out-heart” GSP because we call know Fitch has the heart of a lion.

Has anyone seen the opening odds for this fight? I don’t think that I would be able to bet on Fitch, unless he was +300 or better, and that would only be a small bet because I’d feel like I was throwing my money away…

I thought Mayhem did pretty well. Don’t get me wrong I agree that Jacare looks very promising but he’s not the finished article yet. I did however pick him to win the GP in a poll though so….It’s hard to know at this stage. A very entertaining bout without doubt. He did try a tonne of subs which was great to see. Mayhem smiling and giving the thumbs up to the ref was funny. Can’t believe that Aoki’s opponent was bad enough to let Shinya get the gogo from mount. Pat on the back to Aoki though for that one.

DREAM really is Pride 2.0. I love it. Hopefully it goes from strength to strength. Now I really want to see Overeem Crocop provided Mirko gets past Le Banner.

Great Event, PRIDE is coming back! Aoki was showing off and it was great! Jacre tried a zillion subs..poor Mayhem didnt no what to defend 1st. The crowd all laughed when Mayhem gave the thumbs up!

ViolentMike: Great post! Jon Fitch will be without a doubt GSP’s toughest fight to date except for the BJ Penn fight. I dont count the 1st fight against Hughes, because like you said, he physched himself out before the fight even started.
There is no way in the world that Fitch vs. GSP will not end anytime before the 3rd round. Fitch has the best chance of beating GSP outo f everyone thats not named BJ Penn

I strongly believe that GSP will win the fight, but he may have to go the distance to do so. I doubt he will be able to finish Jon Fitch. Fitch is a very tough guy, who I am a big fan of…He will take the fight to GSP, it will be very entertaining.

The betting pick for this fight is: GSP/OVERS

You are correct that I root against GSP every single time, except for when he fought Koscheck. But all the long time posters here, and the Fitchster himself, know that I have been a fan of his since he turned Josh Burkman’s face into some alien freek show type stuff you only see in the movies. Then he stopped Thiago Alves.

I have yet to root against Jon Fitch in a fight, and seeing that he is my favorite WW and GSP is my second least favorite, most would conclude that I’d be rooting for Fitch.

I don’t dislike the guy, I just think he is over-rated.

He doesn’t look as big as GSP either, maybe it was because he was sitting beside a bigger guy.

I think GSP will win this by GNP.

GSP isn’t so willing to bang anymore, decides to do that on the ground. I can see it turning into another Rua vs Bonello scenario

I don’t see how someone could win 8 straight in the UFC’s tightest division and be considered overated? Fitch is bigger then GSP too, I think the interviewer was a little on the jacked side… probably 220lbs.

And if he beat Chuck don’t you think they’ll give him a title shot? Or would that be over-rating him

Comment by Automation

The fact he is even getting into the same cage as chuck is automatically over-rating him. We can’t even discuss Rashad possibly beating Chuck, even theoritically, it ain’t happening.

My point was that regardless of a fighters recent results, it shouldn’t be used to measure the skills of a fighter. If we did apply that rule to everyone, Wanderlei would probably be sweeping floors in McDonalds lol.

Comment by Arnold
2008-06-16 16:47:21

Did you see Wanderlei’s last fight? Because I won’t fuck with that floor sweeper.

If anyone is over-rated it has got to be Chuck. I like the guy but I don’t know how much fight is left in him. I think past fights are the only way you can evaluate a fighter… not based on his last fight and how he’s being promoted at the current time.

At this point, Fitch has a much better chance to win against GSP than any other 170-pounder out there. I try not to count anyone out in any MMA fight (that’s the beauty of MMA); however with that said, GSP will destroy him. Fitch is a great wrestler, but GSP has way too many tools to beat him with. GSP will dominate the stand-up, GSP has much better submissions. Their wrestling skills ‘might’ be on par, though I’d give the edge to GSP. So, I don’t really see Fitch winning this one. Sorry Fitch…you’re great, but GSP is better.

Comment by Hardcharger
2008-06-16 09:42:15

Although Fitch is clearly the #2 WW, and is an incredibly tough guy, I’d say that right now Thiago Alves is the tougher matchup for GSP, just because of the threat of the KO Alves poses, even though Fitch destroyed Alves. If BJ moves to WW, then I’d put BJ as the toughest matchup.

Should be a great fight. Fitch is always prepared and is tough as nails. GSP should take it, but it will be exciting.

2008-06-16 09:49:38

I agree with your assessment about Alves…the only problem is, that guy can’t make weight–so no matter how much of a threat he is, he won’t be in a title match (at least until Dana is convinced he’ll make 170). Anyway, assuming he does make weight, I still see GSP taking him down at will and either submitting or GnP Alves to victory. Alves can only hope to connect with a knee…

Shut up already with the “this guy cant make weight crap”! All week I had to listen to this crap, but nobody is even bothering to complain about Nick Diaz weighing over 9 lbs heavier in this past Saturdays fight.

Not making weight is very unprofessional, but truth be told, it doesnt really matter unless its a title shot!
All fighters cut weight, some better then others, no 1 weighs what they are supposed to weigh during the fight anyway!

john, i normally agree with your posts, but i’ll have to disagree on this. not making weight does matter regardless of whether or not its a title shot. yes, its unprofessional as you say, and yes 4lbs isnt a lot weight–im pretty sure ive taken dumps that were heavier. however, imagine 2 guys tryin to cut weight by a given date…one guy busts his @$$ and practically kills himself the day before just to make weight while the other guy decides hed rather save his energy/strength for the fight and lose 10% of his purse. that is an unfair advantage. yes, the guy that made weight gets compensated, but IMHO, the guy who didnt make weight doesnt deserve the win–never mind a title fight. now im not sayin this is what happened with hughes/alves. im sayin if alves cant make 170 consistently, then he shouldnt be fightin at 170…and certainly doesnt deserve a title match at that weight unless he makes it sans illegal diuretic.

Comment by JoeyVitaminB12

btw, im not bashing on alves skills–cuz hes definitely got those in spades. however, as someone who competes at the NCAA level, i speak from experience about the effects and consequences of having to ‘make weight’. alves should just move up to a weight class ‘better suited’ for him…

I respect your post! I do not mean to take it so lightly, I just dont like Alves being crucified all week for it, but Diaz getting a pass. Thats all I was trying to say. Alves and Diaz are 2 of my favorites so I am not hating on either one.

Honestly, I have never cut weight, so I really appreciate your input. I didnt mean to make so lightly of it I just feel that Alves should stay at welterweight and that being 4 lbs heavy was not the reason that he beat Hughes!

You are right that he has to make weight to get the title shot with out using the diurelcts. In my eyes I give him a pass for the Hughes fight because he took the fight on a months notice and he may have miscalculated his weight cut cycle. Also it looked like his ankle really hurt and if that was truley the case u cant blame himn….would you rather him have pulled out of the fight? of Course not. I guess his next weigh ins should tell the tale

I agree with Alves being the tougher match-up for GSP at this time. Styles make fights. Along with his KO power and speed, Alves has a great takedown defense that was showcased in his bout with Hughes. Give him one more fight and if he wins it, he is sure to get Fitch/GSP.

GSP is probably worrying about his match with BJ more than anything. Thats what I’d be thinking about if I was him, having barely survuved they’re first fight. He’s probably learning Jui Jitsu to further his understanding of the possible angles that BJ might exploit. I’m sure he wants to take it to the ground and not stand and trade with BJ.

GSP certainly isn’t overlooking Fitch, considering that he spent a 2 week “vacation” training BJJ down in Brazil at great BJJ camps. The guy’s dedication is incredible.

As for Penn, GSP wasn’t ever close to being finished in their first fight. The only trouble he got in was when BJ eye poked GSP and GSP couldn’t see. Other than that, Penn never stunned GSP, never got the advantage on the ground, never got close to subbing GSP, and was taken down 4x by GSP.

Maybe the primary reason GSP is in brazil to work on his jujitsu is that he doesnt underestimate fitch putting him on his back, which means he’s not taking fitch lightly like he did serra…

I disagree. This fight can go either way. Jon Fitch is beast like GSP. It depends on who shows up fightnight. This outside of BJ Penn will be GSP toughfest fight to date. It’s well known how Kos and Ftich train together..and Fitch causes alot problems for him on the mat. kos fought GSP and went the distance. Loss. granted..but still went the distance. Jon Fitch may be a big wrench in GSP’s plans on retaining his title.

Is it just me or is Fitch looking a little small in this video? Or maybe the guy from mmajacked.com is just big in comparison. I would think Fitch would carry himself at 185-190lbs with 7 weeks until fight night but he’s not looking it here.
It’s a tough fight to call and both Fitch and GSP are in my top 5 favourite fighters. I’ll give the edge to St.Pierre though. I think his wrestling is equally as good as Fitch’s, if not better, and the other areas of his game are a little more solid too. Can’t wait until UFC 87 – this card is stacked!

If the strategic GSP that destroyed Hughes & Serra in his last 2 outings shows up, then i can only see him destroying Fitch pretty much the same way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that i don’t rate Fitch. It’s just i think he has nothing to offer that GSP hasn’t dealt with before. GSP submission or TKO 3rd round.

Just because Thiago beat a mentally beat up matt hughes doesnt mean that he would stand a chance agaisnt GSP. GSP just has an explosive take down that he would be on his back before he knew what hit him and be pounded out in less than 3 mins in the first. For the record i am not a GSP fan, I just know Thiago isnt close to his level.
The problem with this fight is that GSP will be watching for Fitch to take him down and hold back on his striking which is possible his biggest advantage. So I would look for fitch to try to take it to him standing up… I think thats his only chance…..

For all of you people who said that Thiago deserves a title shot more than Fitch… did you forget that Fitch beat Alves by TKO! Yes Thiago Alves has improved his game and overwhelmed Hughes, I don’t see the guy beating either St. Pierre or Fitch at this point. … If anyone deserves to be in that ring with GSP its Fitch. He was proved himself over and over again and he still doesn’t get the respect that he deserves.
Even saying so GSP is one of my favorite fighters and as you all have seen against his bout with serra that he is beatable, but its going to be a long time before someone is going to take that title from him.
GSP vs. Fitch is gonna be a hell of a fight and one that I’m looking forward to.

an out of shape BJ took GSP to a decision, will fitch do the same? yes, he will. yeah GSP destroyed serra, but serra is a natural lightweight fighting at WW. and let’s not forget that an out of shape BJ (natural lightweight) took GSP to a split decision and to the hospital. fitch use to fight at 265 (yes, 265) and he is one of the biggest welterweights in UFC. he will take pierre to a decision and has a great chance at winning. but like i said, if fitch doesn’t beat pierre, alves WILL.

Fitch never weighed 265. Quit making things up. Fitch wrestled at 184 at Purdue. The most he’s walked around at is around 205. He’s moved down from fighting a couple at 205, to 185, and now 170.

Fitch is no BJ Penn (who sent GSP to the hospital because he almost poked his eye out, nothing more). GSP is the best WW right now and is a tough matchup for anyone, including Fitch, Alves, and Penn.
