thiago alves

Quoteworthy:

“I fully expected to win, things didn’t go my way. Thiago came in big, some people told me that he looked bigger than me in the octagon. I didn’t expect that but I also think that had nothing to do with the outcome of the fight. I think Thiago came up with a good game plan. He didn’t throw too many punches or any kicks to where I could take him down. He was stronger than I thought and he was quite defensive on the ground. So, where does that leave me? I’ve got one more fight on my UFC contract. I’m wanting to fight Matt Serra (but that’s for the UFC to decide). We’ll see what happens and decide after that fight what I’m going to do. My nose has about 4 or 5 stitches, I couldn’t count when he put them in. My left knee is pretty messed up, I’m going to have to get it looked at. Thiago was very nice after the fight, he seems to be a very good guy. I like that, we’ve always got along good.”

Matt Hughes reflects on his second round technical knockout loss to Thiago Alves this weekend during the main event at UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England. “The Pitbull” came in four pounds heavy because he says he injured his ankle leading up to the fight, which limited his ability to shed weight via cardio. But, anyone who has seen the pictures of Thiago in that fight knows that there doesn’t seem to be much left to lose — he has become an absolutely enormous 170-pound fighter.

In addition to Thiago, I thought that Marquart looked really big as well. Which immediately had me wondering about the drug testing in the UK. Does anyone know if it was done internally by the UFC like the last time they were overseas?

Wow that was not a bad statement from the usual tool. I never really bought in to the Hughes hype. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve his props, he definately does. I just think the whole most dominate 170 pounder in history is pushing it a little

Comment by Ben!

How is it “pushing it a little”? Who in that division’s history has been more dominant? Nobody, right? Even GSP (upon whom I have an admitted crush) has a few years to go before he can come close.

Ben this sport isn’t old enough to have anyone be the best in the history of. This is my opinion. Now, let’s say another 10 to 20 years from now, no one has still done what he has done, then I will gladly give him that distinction.

Matt Hughes can be a complete prick at times, but when it comes down to it, he is truely a class act. Those little comments he makes to people and about people is just part of his complicated personality. After every one of his fights, when he loses, he is always graceful and gives 100% props to the victor. He made no mention of Thiago weighing 174 during his post fight interview. he simply said that he got beat by the better man. After each fight that Hugehes wins, he only gives compliments to whomever lost.

As for Thiago and a possible title shot… He needs to prove at least two times that he can make wieght without using diuretics. Not making weight in a championship bout would ruin an event and possibly his UFC career. Fatty. Also, if Thiago were to fight GSP, I don’t think he’d have much of a shot, although, he would have a punchers chance. IF he fights Fitch again, Fitch would absolutely dominate him AGAIN. Hughes’s takedown attempts looked AWFUL. Actually, if GSP were to fight Thiago,I think he’d take the Fitch approach and just GnP him out.

I did like Thiago, but I am much less of a fan of his after him not making wieght for a main event. He should be a MW, or he needs to beg the UFC to create a couple new “tweener” divisions. He shouldn’t be begging for a title shot.

I would like to see Thiago fight Diego or Kos next.

If anything, a relatively young sport makes it much easier to determine who is the best in history. As far as the WW division goes, that’s Hughes. All of us have had numerous opportunities to see him in action and aren’t trying to compare to somebody from 60 years ago, like when baseball people debate whether Ted Williams was a better left-fielder than Barry Bonds.

VM: I definately have to respect Hughes and I will admit that he actually conducts himself in a classy matter, at times. Making weight wont ever be a problem for Tiago again. He knows it was very unprofessional and he knows that if it happens again, especially in a title fight, it could be career suicide. THis is an iscolated incident. THiago has fought many times at this weight with no problems. Keep in mind, we all know that anyone who has a fight coming up against Matt Hughes, wants to get stronger. Also, Alves fought only 2 months ago. Its not like this has happened before with Alves, so I dont think its as big of an issue as most people are making it out to be. If it were for the title, it would be a disaster but it didnt spoil the fight for me at all.

Given the normal time to train for a fight (3 months), this wont happen again. Hey the UFC wants people to fill in on short notice, then this kind of stuff is going to happen from time to time!

Comment by tm2k

actually he has had problems making weight before, hence the suspension for diuretics… If you cheat to make weight once, and fail to make weight a second time, you are just too big for the weight you are trying to fight at. I think that he should move up to MW… They need good fighters there anyway.

Comment by getrawbc

I think Thiago’s problem is they don’t have his weight class. I think he’s too big for WW but too small for MW. He needs like a 175 or 180 pound weight class.

This is another quote from Matt Hughes:
I didn’t know what to think of the Kimbo Slice fight, didn’t know much about Kimbo nor did I know much about his opponent. I do know that Kimbo doesn’t have much training so I didn’t know how much of a factor that would play. But I don’t know how fair the ref was in the fight. Looks like Kimbo could have tapped out with the guillotine attempt and I don’t know how Thompson got stood up when he was cross sides throwing elbows. It looks to me like there was maybe a little bit of favoritism, but Kimbo is a heck of a nice guy

Trey, it’s because he comes off as arrogant and holier-than-thou to people. He’s probably a perfectly nice guy but people see him do things like hand out Bibles to his fighters on TUF and tell them to read one of the stories and when they were done to tell him who in the story most reminded them of HIM! That’s pretty arrogant.

Comment by THORAZINE

If u saw season II of TUF, he is a sadistic, elitist & Jason Von Flue got the worst of it. In TUF 6… Hughes was a little less sadistic… but still managed to injure Dan Barrera before his bout.

Serra peg Hughes 100%, Serra may be obnoxious and over the top about it. Personally, I was glad he called Hughes on it, I think Hughes has mellowed a bit from that whole thing.

Comment by Bic
2008-06-10 08:16:18

Thats dumb to watch TUF and compare on the fighters. Its a reality show people, what do they do with reality shows? Make them interesting by polarizing the characters. If you know anything about Hughes, he is a very good person who helps his community and his fans to a great extent. Matt Serra is a loser and deserves to lose to Hughes. How can you take Serra’s side when he plays himself as the classy guy. He acts like he’s classy with GSP even though the guy is a New York loud mouth. Hughes will stuff his face for ducking him in their title bout.

Serra needs to drop down to light weight or maybe even think about WEC feather weight, he’s a good fighter but way undersized as a welter weight. That GSP fight was the only fight he’s ever been completely dominated like that in, and the only other person to put him was was Shonie Carter with that spinning back fist, all his other loss’s are decisions, he’s gone the distance with BJ Penn, Din Thomas (controversial) and Karo Pariysian and there’s no shame in any of those loss’s, they are all great fighers. Not saying Serra would beat Penn or Fabor now a days but I think he’d be an entertaining fighter at 155-45.

Comment by tm2k

How long has the UFC been crap? Was he good when he fought and beat some of the best names in the business and now he’s crap. Or was he crap when he beat all the top names and is now even crappier? Is he just crappy when he wants to be? Come on give us more info on this view please!!!

“Now it’s Bisping time!” Yes I love Bisping. He’s such a huge threat to everone. Did you see him annihilate Matt Hammil and now he just destroyed another top 1000 fighter. He is on a tear. Now that the UFC isn’t as crappy as it used to be back when it was crap will Bisping continue his beatdowns to the top ranked fighters? I guess we’ll have to wait.

Bet if GSP wins GSP calls out BJ like BJ did after sherk fight to rev up the hype machine. Id bet my lunch on this fight being next for both guys. Dana cant afford for GSP to lose the belt in some random fashion and this fight to not be a title fight, For it to be as big as possible all GSP has to do is kep his belt one time and then why throw another hurdle in front of this Super Bout, it doesnt make business sense ya know. BJ Penn/Alves, it just occurred to me, would be an awesome fight. Since BJ Penn is BJ Penn, he obviously doesn’t need a tune up fight to qualify to fight GSP, but it would be great if he announced his presence at welterweight by taking out one of its top competitors.

BJ would probably submit Alves within 2, but it would be a good fight before that.

Then BJ would be fight ready for his epic match up with GSP for the #1 P4P.

I deffinetly think Matt Hughes deserved all the credit he gets, i mean he has defended his championship loads of times on two seperate occasions, Matt Hughes is a 2-time Welterweight Champion and has beat some of the best in the world such as BJ Penn, GSP, Carlos Newton, Sean Sherk and Royce Gracie, but i think he has had his time in MMA and after he squares off against Matt’The Error’Serra he should retire and take his spot as Hall Of Famer in UFC.

As for Thiago Alves, i think the guy has a lot of potentiel to one become the Welterweight champion one day, just look at GSP’s standup, me and my brother used to think that GSP had incredible standup but when you really think about it you would realise that GSP is a terrible striker, i mean it has been said before that he has fancy kicks but has no power behind it, some people lose to rubbish guys(such as John Fitch)but that doesnt mean that his journey stops there, just look at the first time Matt Serra faced GSP, GSP got smashed but we all now that GSP is way better then Matt Serra, i think that thiago alves should face some more tough competition then once he has proved his self i think he could possibly beat George St Pierre if he stands up.

6 months ago all he was known for is failing a drug test on diuretics and losing to Fitch.

Now people are arguing over whether or not he deserves a title shot.

I’d say thats a remarkable improvement in such a short period of time, when people like Fitch had to go unbeaten for 10? 11? fights in a row to even be mentioned for a title shot.

First, Thiago Alves lost to John Fitch in June 2006. 2 YEARS AGO!!! Don’t you think Thiago, along with American Top Team wouldn’t be more prepared if a rematch were to happen?

And GSP lost to Matt Hughes. Then about 2 years later GSP destroys Matt Hughes. Then another year, GSP destroys Hughes again! I’d call it short sighted if we’d keep judging possible fight rematches due to the first fight.

That’s like saying Shogun Rua could NEVER beat Forrest Griffen. I’m sure you’d bet your house on Forrest every time *rolls eyes*

And to those guys that called Alves “chubby” or “fatty” after not being about to get to 170-171 lbs.

Thiago looks pretty yolked to me.

Yoked enough to be at 185

Yea, yolked enough to fight in his proper weight class instead of thinking he’s the sh*t for beating smaller guys. When you come in over weight more often then not you should consider that you belong in the weight class that you walk around in on an everyday basis, in his case its 185. And its not like 185 doesnt need help, right.

3lbs.

I’ll give him the benefit of a broken ankle. I’m sure you or I could come run 3 miles, go in a sauna for 20 mins, and sh*t our breakfast enough to lose 3lbs.

He’s a pro athlete, and should have made weight. But, I’d bet anyone money on this forum that, if given a title shot, he’ll make weight no problem.

Actually I said nothing about rematches at all.

All I was illustrating is how he is good at promoting himself, and how 6 months ago most people(not visitors from here) didn’t know who he was or consider him a contender.

For me to say he has built himself up through his own self promotion, and is being debated for a title shot has nothing to do with any rematches, I don’t even know where you got that idea.

It’s not like saying Shogun Rua could never beat Forrest, since I said nothing that would even be an equivalent to that analogy.

You should read what people write before getting upset and writing incoherent replies that aren’t even related to what I said.

Apologies DirtyML.

I took what you wrote and what other posters above you wrote, saying that Jon Fitch would beat Alves again just because he lost to them a first time – got your threads and other people’s tied together. I saw the words ’six months’ and was like…ummm…doesn’t sound right.

My bad homie!

The point to my whole blurb was that too many people put too much stake in a first fight dictating how any rematches would go.

And about Fitch, I like him a lot. He beats people, period. If it were for the Serra/TUF win, Fitch should have gotten his shot after beating Diego Sanchez.

I personally liked Karo, but, Thiago beat him and has gone undefeated since Fitch. If GSP were to beat Fitch, IMO, Thiago Alves should be next in line. But I’m sure BJ Penn vs GSP would be a sexier fight.

Not saying the first lost to Hughes didn’t rededicate GSP to train harder and get his head together but c’mon… he was dominating the round until he got caught, and after seeing their last two bouts, I’d say that first fight was a fluke…

Alot of people forget that Alves tested positive for a diuretic which he said he used to make weight. he was supended for 8 months.
I think the ufc should have come down heavy on him (pun intended).
and i really think that the ufc should say fine, you can fight, as long as you come in at 175 lbs. the day of the fight, not the day before so that he doesn’t have a full day to recover

That would violate any states athletic commission policy by making a fighter make weight the day of a fight…and I love on here how everyone is so quick to pass judgment…the man might have just been under pressure and made a mistake..I am sure none of you have ever done something you later regretted. I think alot of the Alves bashing on here is just bitter and sad fans of the has-been Matt Hughes. He is DONE and I guess you bandwagoners will just need to find someone else to jump on board with! I mean half the bored will be in depression once Hughes, Over-rated Chucky and Fat BJ retire! I can’t wait for that day myself!

I think if This fight had taken place in Vegas Thiago would be on his way to a suspension.
As an avid Bodybuilder I’m fully aware you don’t get to look like that naturally. Are you really telling me THiago weighed less than 195-200Lbs for that fight?

Alves has to win one more quality fight, make weight, and then the Fitch/GSP discussion can happen.

Pure class both before and after the fight. Things are starting to shape up with GSP, Alves, and possibly BJ Penn coming back to this division.

Alves is indeed a very big at 170lbs, but i thought GSP looked very big in comparison to Hughes when they fought at UFC 79, so i’ll be interested to see how Alves and GSP size up if this match is made.

I didn’t like that fight, because 4 pounds may not seem like much, but Thiago didnt come in with just 4 pounds of anything, he came in with 4 pounds of muscle. Although Hughes was dominated, I dont think that was fair, and would like to see a rematch of even weight.

I quote: “anyone who has seen the pictures of Thiago in that fight knows that there doesn’t seem to be much left to lose — he has become an absolutely enormous 170-pound fighter.”

Thiago Alves is not a 170 pound fighter. If you cannot make weight, and get busted for diuretics, you are not a 170 pound fighter, you are a 185 pounder trying to screw the system to pad your stats.

And I dont even like Matt Hughes, but somehow, the media is forgetting all this.

maybe he’s duckin off from those 185 pound fighters and take advantage on smaller 170 pound fighters. this way he’s likely to be more successful.

what wrong with that? every fighter has to cut weight for fights with the exception of most heavyweights..there’s nothing wrong with that.if a fighter is bigger and stronger thats the point of cutting weight. to have every advantage you can get.i hope to God you ppl are’nt so iggnorant to think that every fighter walks around at the weight they fight at.Hell, i believe even the frenchie fag walks around about 190lbs.so why is’nt everyone bashing him for beening the bigger guy. and the steroid accusation are just signs of bitterness becuz Hughes got beat down.not saying he is guilty or not.that why they test.if he is dirty then so be it.

On this topic of the sport changing. I think there is a lot of truth to that notion. My theory (stress “theory”) is that eventually MMA will settle into a groove and major changes will come at a much slower pace. However, the sport is still so young, and fighters are growing and training at a ridiculous pace. When you realize that some of these new fighters were merely young fans just years ago, and now they have the benefit of traning with techniques that have been tried and proven. For example, defending a takedown has become an art, and has changed the way fighters like Matt Hughes can compete. That said, You still have to respect the dominance of guys like Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes in “their time”.

you heard it here first, UFC is going to float itself on the STOCK MARKET!!!!! it makes perfect sense, following in footsteps of WWE. I thought about it today, and if it aint a tv deal (as Dana says) then I think it is this.

Comment by Automation

Certainly plausible but I can’t see that being the big anouncement that will get the fans excited.

It will only get the business people excited who truly know the benefits in floating on the stock market although there is huge cons.

Personally I cannot see this happening because this would possibly mean greater access to huge funds, although there isn’t a shortage there, but ultimately could end up with Dana and the Bros losing some control of the UFC which they wouldn’t let happen.

The Hughes / Alves fight is just another reason why weigh-ins need to happen on fight day.

I’m not saying that because it’s not “fair” to one fighter to have to compete against someone who’s better at cutting weight, but because, as a fan, I have ZERO interest in watching fights where a key factor was how well the fighters de- and re-hydrated beforehand…

Hmmm, let’s play a word association game. What’s the first thing that comes into your head when I mention Thiago Alves?

STEROIDS…exactly. Too many of the Brazilians on them. Probably too many fighters in general are on them.

The cheek of him to say “He’s been such a good boy I want my title shot.”

I believe that Tiago did something very disrespectful to the sport and to Matt hughes. This guy knew he was the main event and that Matt was going to take the fight. He came with four more pounds that turned out to be like more than 10 the day of the fight. I disagree with the outcome and in my opinion he does not deserve a title shot. As far as Matt the time for ground and pound is over. you need to bring something different to the table if you want to win. the same thing is happenig to Tito now he cannot win a fight because it is very difficult to take fighters down and gorund and pound them the way they both used to do it.

Spraining his ankle didn’t keep him from making 170. He could have ridden a bike or swam. He had way too much muscle to make 170. He’s going to have to decide whether to slim down, more cardio, less lifing or move up to 185.
