ufc 85 bonuses
UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on Saturday, June 7 electrified fans with a mix of exciting finishes — even the two main card bouts that went the distance were not snoozers.

And as is the case with all recent UFC shows the promotion rewarded certain fighters for their outstanding performances with cold hard cash.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 85:

Knockout of the Night — Thiago Alves
Submission of the Night — Kevin Burns
Fight of the Night — Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares

Each fighter received $50,000 each for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will more than likely not learn because the show took place overseas.

It’s interesting that Alves was greased the extra scratch, considering he failed to make weight — something that never sits well with UFC President Dana White and the rest of the brass. Perhaps he made up for it with yet another crushing knee to end a fight in highlight-reel fashion.

Congratulations goes out to Burns who submitted a very talented Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in his Octagon debut … on short notice.

B.W: I think Alves will have to forfeit a percentage of his purse to Hughes.

I am so happy Hardonk Knocked Sanchez’s head off! I cant stand Eddie Sanchez….He was always a bum but I really hate him for all the taunting and screaming he did against Sao Peleli

I hope all the Hughes Nuthuggers today dont come on here and blame the loss on the 4 lbs Thiago weighed over the limit. To those people I say, Sakuraba spent his entire career fighting guys at least 10 pounds heavier then he was….so I dont want to hear that as an excuse…..Not talking about you B.W because I know that you are knowledgable enough to know better, I am talking about all the idiots that will flood this thread in the next couple of hours!

no the 4 lbs didnt have anything to do w/ the outcome of this fight. i didnt know for sure before this fight, but after i know that matt hughes is a shot fighter physically and mentally. i think he gave up in the 2nd rnd. no disrespect toward hughes as a fighter, he will definetly be in the hof by next year, but i dont even think he is a top 10 ww anymore. just think it wsnt that long ago that some people were thinking hughes should be matched up against a.silva!

i do think alves needs to fight another top 10 guy and make weight before getting a title shot. if he misses weight again they should forfiet %50 of his purse and face a possible suspension. same with gina carano in elite, what was it like the 4th time she missed weight? as a matter of fact they should make this a rule. it will definetly tighten things up.

Because of timing of things I think there are one of two likely scenarios. Either Alves has to fight another contender before he gets a crack at the belt just beceause the UFC won’t want him to wait around for St. Pierre vs Fitch winner to be ready for him. Or He and the winner of GSP vs Fitch could be coaches on TUF 9 (I know I’m looking way ahead) and meet in an eventual title fight. Those are the most likely scenarios and I truely believe one of them will happen.

prediction on Dana’s big announcement:
He will announce a 145 division and announce floyd mayweather as an opponent foe faber. It makes sense, mayweather just retired and said it wasn’t about the money, has said in the past he wants to do mma and he’ll draw tons of new fans to the sport. I don’t know if anyone in the other thread said this, but after I saw “money” turn down de la hoya to retire, it’s the first thing I thought of!

I can’t say that I agree with the Mayweather signing being the big announcment. However I think it could be true. I think its more along the lines of a big TV deal, but i don’t know how that will work when they already have a deal with Spike TV.

Kevin: Mayweather hands are really messed up. They hurt after boxing with Pillows, I dont know how they will be able to with stand 4 ounce gloves… Mayweather will never fight in the UFC!!!

I only disagree because Dana says this will show where the sport is going over the next 5 years and if Mayweather was the anouncement then what does that mean? That over the next 5 years the sport will be flooded by boxing stars?

Fight of the Night: should of been Leites/Marquardt along side of Wiman/Tavares. I think Leites/Marquardt should of got $50,000 in thier pockets.

Submission of the Night: Can’t and won’t disagree with

Knockout of the night: I think it should of went to Cane, Hardonk or Wiman.

i was really impressed with Watt Miman’s (goldbergs name for him, i like it) performace, i agree with an earlier post, that his bjj look much inproved, and with a few flamboyant flips and turns got the crowd going. his stand up is ok, he does like to block some punches with his chin and against a better striker he could have come unstuck. he got rocked with a good shot from the brazilian early and recoverd well and finished the fight well. having chuck liddell in your corner helps. fight of the night all the way!

I thought sanchez v hardonk should have had fight of the night or knockout of the night. A great fight to get things started, very back and forth, and a great finish.

I bet the fact that so many main events had been scratched before-hand played a role in Dana’s reaction to Alves not making weight. Imagine this…after several main events fall through, Alves calls Dana and tells him that he’s going to have to pull out because he has a sprained ankle and already knows that he won’t make weight (being unable to exercise for several days before the weigh-ins tend to do that to you when you’re cutting as much weight as he is). Dana probably said “Don’t pull out, we’ll see what happens”, which led to him being much more lenient than he normally would have been toward Alves.

For those of you kissing Alves’ butt for kicking Hughes’ butt and saying that the 4 pounds have nothing to do with it: then let’s see Alves move up to 185. If he’s such a great fighter and the weight doesn’t matter then let’s see it. I think it would be hilarious for the UFC to punish Alves by giving him a title shot… at Anderson Silva at 185. Alves, you want a title shot? Okay, here it is… vs. Spider. Good luck.
