“My left cheek and area surrounding the eye are looking pretty ugly today, but there was no major damage. Though it may have looked like it on tv, I never actually had an open wound. What you didn’t see was that the doctor actually cleared me to fight the third round but the commission said ‘no.’ I wanted to continue, my corner wanted to continue. The cut likely would have opened in the third but it was under the eye. If I had to guess, I would say that they didn’t want the visual of a woman with a bloody face on CBS. They also chose not to do a post fight interview with me or to include me in the post fight news conference and after party. I think the reason for that was my beat up appearance after the fight because I was not seriously injured and was completely coherent. I am very disappointed about that but cant help but wonder how people would have responded to that, as stupid as it is. “
– Kaitlin Young — who did not answer the bell for the third and final round of her fight with Gina Carano at Elite XC: “Primetime” on CBS — shares her thoughts via FighterGirls.com on the stoppage. Young sustained some pretty solid damage during her six minutes in the cage; however, she was still demonstrating that she was aware and in the fight. She also reveals that the doctor cleared her to continue between rounds; however, the commission ultimately made the decision to stop the fight. It’s interesting to hear her thoughts on the possible reasons behind the premature stoppage.

she disappointed me, she looked great in her previous fights.
I guess gina is as strong as she is cute..
I thought Gina looked great too, but was she gassed? did elite save her (like they did Kimbo)? It’s a tough event to grasp, with all the cotroversy, but we are all talking about it…so elite may have succeeded
Gina is like what Anna Kournikova is to tennis, except slightly, and I do mean slightly, better at MMA than Anna is at tennis. They didnt want her to lose either. This was the fight that set the ‘bullshit flag’ trend for the night. BOYCOTT EliteXC!
so I’m assuming based on your assesment of carano that saturday was the first MMA event that you have ever watch. Truth is she would beat most males is a mma fight including myself.
amen Cheap. if you watch her previous matches Carano is a beast, and she does not need to be “protected” by XC and shaw unlike poor lil’ kimbo.
How could anyone say she was protected when she dominated the fight! They both put on an exciting match and I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Congrats to both of them.
No it wasnt, but she is not the best out there. The two main reasons why she is “The Face Of Womens MMA” is because of her looks and the fact that she is with Xtreme Couture (Kim Couture is her manager. Im sure there are a bunch of girls living in mudhuts in Thailand that could kick the crap out of Gina, but they are not marketable. Dont get me wrong. I think she is hot, I mean if given the chance I’d give her the mouth pumping of the century. The bottom line is that they wanted her to win, just like they wanted Kimbo to win. They could have the ‘embassador of womens MMA’ lose under their banner.
You said they couldn’t afford to have her lose, which implies that they protected her. I just didn’t see it.
Gina was definitely not in danger of losing the fight after the 2nd round. Kaitlin was hurt but could have continued. Kaitlin took a LOT of shots, I’m actually kinda of impressed with her. But I don’t believe for a second that EliteXC made the call to stop the fight simply cuz they didn’t want Gina to lose. I agree Gina may not be the best female fighter but who is saying that she is? She is labelled the “face of womens MMA” probably because she is marketable for womens MMA.
She’s labeled as “the face of womens MMA” for many reasons:
1) She’s gorgeous
2) She’s well spoken
3) She comes from a professional athlete family
4) She’s pretty good at what she does.
I’m 6′2″ 235lbs and I’m not sure I would want to get kicked in the ribs by her. She looked good, yea she got gassed, but that’s because she had only a matter of weeks to drop 15lbs. Being on A.G. she must keep her weight up around 160 and then she fights @ 140. Granted she didn’t make weight, but you guys try to go lose 20lbs in a couple weeks and tell me how well you fight.
what’s her profession jake? how did she land a role on american gladiators? Randy did movies, yet his training never suffered, as has many other mma athletes. If this was a guy, you’d have a field day with 2 pounds over weight. 3 weeks I could drop 15 pounds if I wanted..Gauranteed! It’s called disciplined. You find her well spoken?? That giggly almost surfer talk???
i think she probly did a little toking in her younger days. maybe even hitting the pipe like her sister. i think that’s where the giggly talk comes from. kinda burnt out. lol, all that just makes her hotter
Gina’s striking is pretty outstanding. I was impressed at how pinpoint her counters were. i have to admit, at first I was like ” Oh great, a couple of girls fighting.” But man, it was one of the more entertaining bouts. I was disappointed in the overall production value of the event. I don’t think I will be going out of the way to view many future Elitexc events. Probably will try to view just the most interesting match ups.
For a first time out yes there was some poor presentation but hopefully they can rebound from what we saw saturday night. I was just really disappointed with Kevin Iole’s article. I really like what this site had to say about it. Heres The Full Article
Kevin you constantly bashed Gina! I told you she was gonna win…
yeah, she can’t make weight, that’s what I bashed. My wife is about gina’s size (latin booty), and she wants a new Louis purse (around 1200). She has 4 weeks to make weight (135) and she gets the purse. I guarantee I’ll have to buy the purse, that just goes to show Gina’s dedication!!
Kevin
I know Latina booties and that a good bet for you, but good luck to your wife. You should buy it for her anyway becuase she will look good afterward and you will benefit…if you know what I mean.
Gina really impressed me on saturday, i understand she outweighed Young by a good 10lbs, but the way she used her front kick to dictate the fight was pretty impressive.
i also liked how she used her high/rubber guard to really muffle Young while simulatenously allowing herself to breath and rest up…
she pummeled young badly – and i was alsy confused at the stoppage, kaitlin was definately game, but her face was MASHED ;p
those front kicks were terrible! any BJJ opponent would have grabbed those and taken her down at will!
Yup, Slow and heavy.
kevin – ya youd think kaitlin wouldve done something with them, but it actually went the other way around – gina caught a few of youngs front kicks and actually swept her for some top control action..
maybe my expectations on carano was really low – but i thought she did awesome, considering she wasnt in shape ;p
I know you guys hate my wife stories, but I was laughing at the 3 minute rounds when my wife said (10 years ago) she was in a bjj tournament. She had to roll with guys, because girls didn’t train back then. She said the 3 minutes was an eternity! I guess she’d know better than me! IMO, womens mma isn’t all that!
About the front kicks and what a BJJ practicioner would do with them. Well Young is a Muy Thai practioner, maybe that was part of Carano’s strategy?
They both had the same style silly. I didn’t like those front leg kicks though. They bothered me a lot because Young wasn’t getting it. She is going to kick you again and again and again the same way DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! It was driving me crazy. Whatever though its Youngs fault and Gina beat her down.
Hey Kevin, have you and your wife ever thought about opening your own gym? From what I can gather from your posts, both you and your wife both train and keep in shape, and I think you have the money to put down for the start-up costs (you paid off your car, correct?).
Say what you want about that fight, BOTH Girls BROUGHT it and I enjoyed it! I would have loved to see it go the 3rd round. It was the best fight of the night along with Lawler/Smith
kevin? a moderator from club ufc? san diego? hot wife? total d bag at times but knowledgable most of the time?
hey mania, you see the dan wetzle article on yahoo? what a douche, he says kimbo would have won on one judges card (biased judge) 5 rounds to zero. Does this moron realize it was a 3 round fight? Main stream america isn’t ready to watch or report on mma!!!
proelite has all the press conferences, they are good. I’m hearing grim will be released from elite…I persona;;y think elite is now a joke. those caesar gracie guys got to get out and into UFC/WEC!! they are the only legit guys in elite!
You know, I bet Kimbo does demand the fight with Grim. Not that I think it’s smart, but Kimbo knows what that will do to his rep if Elite cuts him after he called Kimbo out. Kimbo may be a novice mma combatant, but he in no way will take being called a p*ssy, per se.
Dude, he was making the point that the judge was so crooked, he’d have had Kimbo winning 5 rounds in a 3-round fight.
Man that article you’re referring to was spot on, but apparantly you failed to pick up on the sarcasm in that particular statement. He had a lot of intelligent insights in that piece, unfortunately for you they seem to have gone straight over your head.
guess so, my bad! I should have known better since UFC has yahoo in their pocket, so it’s not reallt journalism it’s a ufc blog!! good call guys
I have to agree with Scott. I thought the main points of the piece actually exposed EliteXC to look like the crappy, sub-Busch league promotion that they in fact are. But I also saw that too Kevin, about the 3/5 round thing. I was like “What the f*ck? Dont these guys proof read?”
Kevin, Wentzel was emphasizing his point. A judge scored the round in which JT had him on his back eating elbows for an eternity and Kimbo may/may not have tapped as Kimbo winning that round. He is speculating that the (fixed) judging was part of the agenda for the night. This “moron” stated that they probably would have scored the 3 round fight as Kimbo winning five rounds to zero. Reading comprehension shouldn’t be that difficult for you if you were half as smart as make yourself out to be.
I thought this fight displayed more technical skill than any of the others. The rest… as fun as they were to watch, were pretty much cavemen matches.
i thought it was an overall good entertaining fight. Gina really started to pick her apart in the end, and she didnt look like her best at that.
This is what happens in m.m.a. i mean remember sylvia’s broken forearm thanks to mir you should have done research (CBS) before trying to cash in on a sport posers!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let the fighters determine the outcome not some corporate snobs.
I don’t think FOX would care
If Fox can air “When Pets Attack” part 25, a little real MMA shouldn’t bother their conscious.
This just proves a point — Mixed martial arts doesn’t belong on Free Tv. UFC was right all along not to persue such a thing. The eliteXC show has damaged the image of MMA. The whole show was a complete disappointment. They would have scored positive feedback if they would just let these fighters fight. They just treated the fighters as pussies (stopping the fight for getting poked in the eye – what a crock of shit)
UFC heavily pursued a deal with NBC, so watch what you type.
Yes they did. But they backed out because NBC was not giving the production rights to UFC. eliteXC just took the deal and called off fights cuz the CBS executives wanted them too.
No. They backed off because of danas stubborness with everything as usual. Same reasons why fedor, arlovski, lindland, and the countless others arent with the UFC when they should be.
by stubborness you mean not wanting or needing ugly dancers, fireworks, new announcers and a tutorial? He backed off because the network is footing the bill and wants all creative control.
This whole CBS and Elite XC thing is becoming more and more of a joke
The state of womens mma in the US is pathetic (womens combat sports in general). Don’t expect it to change on CBS.
BOYCOTT EliteXC!
Yeah That!
totally!…this is absolutely ridiculous and i think we all really do need to boycott it
its gettin worse and worse by the minute, smith could have continued, thompson could have cont. and now kaitlin young could have cont. im the last person to yell conspiracy or fixed, but all be damned if everything didn’t go in the favor of who they(elitexc-shaw) wanted to win. im not gonna watch it anymore, free or not. i will watch guys like shields, diaz, noons, le on the web at later times. cbs neds to pull the plug quick beforw something else gets out!
I hear you there, but every sports talk show was talking about MMA and I enjoyed it. The bad thing is that they thought it was good MMA because of the the ratings it received which were great for CBS Sat night. Me personally would pay $45 every weekend to see UFC fights becuase of the skill set of the talent.
I will BOYCOTT XC unless that hottie Gina is fighting, unless she goes to the UFC!
This is simply more proof that putting MMA on network television is extremly counterproductive. Its overall failure stems from the fear CBS has for negative press. However, by doing these half arsed stoppages the badd blood moves against Elite XC and not upon CBS itself. Thus CBS is more then willing to throw Elite under the bus to save its own skin.
This is why you can’t have a network airing MMA….they have an interest in controlling what is seen, what isn’t, who wins, who doesn’t, what is good for the viewers, etc. Dana and the UFC don’t have this issue. They run and control the PPV’s and let the viewers decide what’s best for them. Sure there are issues with this model too but given the choice, I choose the UFC and Pay Per View over what I saw from EliteXC and CBS.
A PHUCKING MEN!
No doubt Dugout, in many respects CBS dumbs down the product and expects us to take accept every decision they make. In return they screw the fighters, work the reffing, and manipulate the decisions. All to avoid what, some whinning from overwhelmed and under loved soccer moms.
Gary Shaw needs a new icon for his company, Kimbo Slice is just too old for this sport. They need to bring in Tito Ortiz. Kimbo vs Ortiz would be a great show, Ortiz would Ground and Pound Kimbo, and gets a rematch with Frank Shamrock. If Gary Shaw wants his company to continue to exist, he needs to get Tito right away.
Kimbo is a heavyweight, Tito is (a dumbass…) I mean, hes a light heavyweight and Frank Shamrock is a middleweight.
You’d have to find a catchweight for all three. And if Tito joined EliteXC, Jenna would be the new owner/promoter/match-maker for that organization. She has more balls than Tito.
Tito walks around at about 220 pounds, which qualifies him for heavyweight if he were to not cut anything and especially if he bulked up (hard for him though). Kimbo would outweigh him but he would probably still lose.
I still think this would make a great fight! Tito would expose Kimbo for the hack MMA fighter he really is! For that reason, Shaw will never beat down his star. Tito needs a step down in skills to be competitive again.
damn!!! gina’s not only HOT, she’ll even front kick you right into your nutts!
gotta LOVE that face of gina when she’s pissed off… she’s freakin’ HOTTER!!!!
Did anybody see the Nick Serra fight? It was a disgrace and it’s a good thing it wasn’t televised. He was dragging his ass on the ground like a dog, trying to get his opponent into his guard. This, after he tried to pull a flying guard. The ref warned him and took points off for not getting up and engaging, but Nick refused and the ref had no choice but to stop the fight. Nick needs to stick to sport BJJ and teaching. And he also needs to stop running his mouth. This is the guy who in UFC Countdown said “Serra’s don’t tap” and asked of GSP “Is this guy a fighter?”. How’s that humble pie taste? Mmmm-mmm, bitch. Your brother should be ashamed. Matt is all heart and always comes to fight.
Interesting. I wanted to check that fight out on the ProElite site but wasn’t able. Now I am glad I didn’t make the time. Thanks for the recap. Was Matt in his brother’s corner? I was just wondering if there was still evidence of the beating GSP put on him.
Man this show becomes more of a joke everyday.
But overall, this was a good step for the sport. Having it on national TV is the right direction. Sure, it was not as strong as we all all wanted and there are things to improve on, but overall, it was a good move and I am aglad it happened.
yeah, if by good step you mean the 4 steps it took backwards!!
I am with you …. but I just think, we are better off with this, than if this never happened. Time will tell …
I applaud all fighters for speaking up boldly.. But I have to wonder how long it will be until EliteXC and CBS put gag orders on all their fighters’ contracts…?
One step forward, two steps back. It was a mockery of the sport in everyway. Brent Rogers was the first win on TV and he looks downright fat. Sad. i’ve never been a hardcore feminist since I’m a guy, but I think those female fighters do great and can EASILY go 5 min rounds. I practice bjj and on average the women in the academy can outlast most guys in terms of cardio. so say what you will but cardio has NOTHING to do with gender, so give them the 5 min rounds, they don’t need to be pampered.
How many guys are going to cry when Gina comes out of the closet??
NOOOOOO
Yeah… you’re not the only one that’s guessed that!… just hope she has a hot’ looking girl friend!!
I just re-watched the fight, and from what I hear, in response to the doctor asking if they should stop the action, Young responds “I bet EliteXC is gonna do it”. I might be wrong, but it really sounds like she knew what was coming.
ortiz vs. slice would bring in ALOT of viewers. tito would double leg him so easily. and elbow him into unconciousness.
lol, get a new hobby man! Not that I disagree, but of all the names to bring up! I bet tito is thinking twice about leaving the UFC after this debacle!!
I don’t know exactly who is incharge of production, CBS or Elite XC?… Someone (Gary Shaw) or multiple people don’t know what the @#$#!! they’re doing. I thought Phil Baroni’s entrance was ‘worse’ than any of the fights and controversy, it reeked of WWE at it’s finest.’ I was cringing” just watching him… and so thankful he was KO’d! and Villasenor grab the mike. He was intelligent and well spoken’.. what a Godsend!
If CBS is going with Elite XC, someone, anyone’ needs to up the caliber fighters and take control of production, just copy the WEC or UFC… Freakin’ A Bob, anyone of us could have done a better job than that”’ re-match Smith VS lawlor, bring Carano back against a game opponent (keep the weight 145lbs), Sign Ortiz for heavyweight, let Tito GnP then KO Kimbo and take over as heavyweight face of Elite XC for a bit. Have Shamrock, Cung Lee on the card, get some other good fighters for the undercards. Get some more experience MMA judges, doctors, etc… Control the ‘fighters’ entrance and hire Bas Rutten and maybe Frank Trigss as one of the commentators… there’s a list of easy fixes”’ it’s sooo obvious… Gary Shaw is most likely the biggest roadblock to the success of the collaboration between MMA and CBS.
I’m not so sure about Kaitlin’s coherency. You can cleary see the Doc saying stop to the ref as Commissioner Lembo waves the fight off.
As far as the weight debacle, I was down for a rematch done the right way but no longer, not after that beating.
Kaitlin’s great but I think she’d get beat on the ground against Baszler & Evinger but I def think she can stop Kedzie’s tkdwn’s and KO her.
I was excited at first to hear that CBS was gonna broadcast EliteXC. But they have totally ruined what could’ve been a good experience for first time viewers. I can’t believe how they screwed over Kaitlin Young. CBS is becoming the new evil empire of censorship. Ever since Janet Jackson decided to show her titty at the superbowl a couple of years ago. The first fight, they freaked out about the guys jock strap showing and went to a different show for a few seconds and you couldn’t even seen the fight. I now hate CBS for ruining MMA on public broadcasting.
by looking at this pic it appears to me that they stopped due to Gina actually kicking thru the stomach. In that picture it is clear that her foot is actually inside her stomach. I kid I KId
Dangerously close to being a work. This, along with the Kimbo bad-stoppage, means that EXC has a long way to go to obtain credibility. I hope Kaitlin never has to deal with that again.
an excuse to try to cover up the fact that there was a fix .trying to do damage control thats all this crap is ,just like everything else they did ,CRAPXC
So if Gina was elbowed in the face and cut open then
she would have lost at the end of that round?
Does anyone else see this as a step back for Women’s MMA?
I hate to tell CBS but this sport does from time to time contain blood…I mean they are so scared to show this but then they don’t think twice showing someone get shot or stabbed on CSI! Just one of about 3,000 the network has to learn about MMA…The CBS announcer did nothing but make me pissed all night! He would step all over the REAL announcers and call moves that weren’t even happening…like a DDT! Was Jake Roberts fighting and I was half asleep or something? This whole thing made me sick and I will never watch another CBS MMA card…if I wanted to watch a preplanned sporting event I would watch WWE..I think WWE was waaaaay more real then anything CBS and Elite XC put on Saturday night! The boycott is on! This is EXACTLY why Dana didn’t want to work with these network buffoons just hoping to cash in on the next big fad!
So I see where some of you are coming from, but IMO the only bs stoppage was Lawler/Smith. Carano was whipping that chicks ass bad, she could barely stand… and that mouse under her eye was huge. Kimbo popped the guys ear, and again, the dude was done…. just my opinion, and I’m sure I’ll get some backlash for it. That being said, the announcers were horrible and the introductions were cheesy as hell.
WHOA! Now I think that conviction girl…..yeah she’s pretty HOT. I saw her pre-fight interview and I was like….DAMN! Then she came out and didn’t look that hot. I just wanted to put that out there. Now yeah UFC tried and is still trying to do a deal with network TV but I don’t think it would have been like that. UFC seriously ‘tries’ to deliver good fights and ggreat matchup when anyone could lose. Now they do try to do that…..Collousus and Kimbo fight was entertaining to the certain point that it had a crappy stoppage and showed that Kimbo is not a MMA fighter (he did get that sweep though). Kimbo is all about marketing Elite XC to be NO.1. He can’t do that on his own and if you noticed….alot of their fighters did fight in the UFC, but couldn’t cut it. Diaz was a problem starter, Smith (I love the guy and he taught me some stuff) but he just couldn’t hack either. Lawler on the other hand was good but he left….UFC did offer him a contract. I also didn’t like how they (Elite XC announcers) made the UFC look like it was weaker. By the stuff they said. Joe Rogan dosent even do that and he knows what he is talking about. I also don’t like Gary Shaw……he’s really overweight. =)
While I did cringe a bit at the spectacle of the fighter entrances–Phil Baroni mackin’ it all the way to the ring in particular, I guess I wasn’t too disappointed because my expectations weren’t that high. It would be nice if they refined it and made it more appealing to MMA fans, but I get the feeling it was all about dollars and ratings. I really don’t know what CBS was thinking having Gus Johnson as an announcer either. It also would have been nice if they had put the Jake Shields/Yves Edwards matchup on that card, but I suppose they thought a Phil Baroni homecoming would have more appeal.
I guess it did have some resemblance to a train wreck, but I don’t think it was particularly detrimental to MMA in general. You never know, CBS and Gary Shaw may have learned enough from it to put on a better show next time. Regardless of that, the ratings should be enough to show the UFC and the other networks that there is a huge revenue potential for broadcasting a quality event. I mean honestly, the whole idea of Elite XC being on network television before the UFC is kind of like broadcasting the CBA to see if there’s a market for the NBA. I hope it served its purpose as a wake-up call for the power players involved, I just have my doubts about Dana’s ability to get the deal done.
“Broadcasting the CBA to see if there’s a market for the NBA”??…. I like it!… mind if I use it now n’ then?..lol
Knock yourself out man :p. I probably should have thought of a mainstream sport that was on cable before being broadcast, but hey as long as there’s a laugh or two out of it, it’s all good.
you wouldn’t happen to be kevin from club ufc would you? you know, death by high kick. the best moderator from san diego ever?
Elite XC is a joke. There events were as rigged as the WWE’s. I personally won’t ever watch that crap again and I hope they get cancelled. I even hope the company goes bankrupted. The whole event was a digrace to mma and made mma look bad. Boycott elite XC!!!
I haven’t heard anyone talk about Gina’s gogo attempt, I didn’t think she had that kind of confidence in her subs. She didn’t really come close to finishing with it but totally trapped Young, and could have laid out the elbows (like Day did against Belcher).
