sokoudjou

“I would love to fight that guy. I’ve tried to fight him ever since I fought in PRIDE and he’s been ducking me. Shogun has been ducking me since the PRIDE days. Shogun’s camp told me that to fight him, I had to fight Cyborg first. I told them I want to fight Shogun, not Cyborg, and then Pride went away and now he’s in the UFC and he hasn’t fought for a minute. I know he got injured for his last fight, but I think by the time I’m ready to fight again, hopefully he should be ready and will take the fight…. Good luck to him trying to get me to the ground. I got my ass kicked once on the ground so you think I just went home and didn’t do anything on the ground? I spent hours and hours fighting off of my back.”

– Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou — who briefly called out Mauricio “Shogun” Rua after he defeated Kazuhiro Nakamura this past weekend at UFC 84: “Ill Will — sharpens the rhetoric in a recent interview with FightHype.com. “The African Assassin” holds two decisive knockout wins over fellow Brazilians, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, under the Pride FC banner. He apparently is eager for a third. Shogun, meanwhile, has his sights set on former light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, while he recovers from knee surgery.

Used to fight out of Chute Box, huge guy, used to fight in Cage Rage a lot. I can see why they would have wanted Soko to fight him first, almost to prove he can hang with Shogun even. I don’t know, I would rather see Shogun fight Liddell, as long as the fat out of shape Shogun doesn’t show up that is. lol They should have Soko fight Rashad.

I would love to see Soko field goal Evans’ head off his shoulders and into the audience.

Cyborg = Evangelista Santos (no idea why he needs a nickname if such a cool real name) and he looks like a leaner Jeff Monson. Unfortunately he never really took off and fought low-to-mid level fighters mostly.

That fight would go the same way the Thiago Sliva fight went. Soko needs a ground game… and a haircut

Thiago Silva needs a standup game.

Thiago couldn’t take Sok down, and couldn’t stand with Sok without getting KOed.

Shogun vs. Sok is a great matchup

I was speaking hypothetically about those potential fights.

I think Sok-Shogun would be awesome.

I think Thiago is overrated, and would get beat by Sok.

i wanna see Shogun in top form again. I think the knee injury was one of the factors in the cardio issue he had against Forrest. His knee was hurt before the fight and everyone knows that a bumm knee really effects how much cardio you can do. Plus i wanna see him murder Liddell. Soko needs a few more wins before he takes on someone of Shoguns skill. A match with Rashad would be intriging.

not to take anything away from soko, but everyone gets owned by machida. I’m going to pull a tito and say that soko will have a great future in the UFC, but if he goes against shogun now, it won’t be anytime soon.

I don’t like this fight. I am sure the UFC wants both these guys to win another fight. However, if Soko keeps talking the fight will happen. Although I think Liddell vs. Shogun is still more likely, but everything could change. For Shogun the fight doesn’t make sense. He wants a guy that will get him into title cotention. I guess Sokoudjou would help, but I don’t know. I expect it to happen this fall if the hype keeps building.

Comment by linx
2008-05-30 11:56:03

I agree, they both need to fight ppl that has bigger name inside the cage. neither shogun nor soko has a big UFC following yet, if they both fight now ppl just won’t care. but if the UFC builds them first a fight later on will be good.

Shogun is a proven fighter with a standup and ground game. Soko hasnt really proved himself that much. Ok he beat Arona and Nogueira, imporessive victories, but when on the ground he is lost. If he continues to beat wrestlers and BJJ guys then he will have more right to ask for a fight with real elite fighters. Until then he really needs to shut his mouth and prove his worth by fighting guys like Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva and if Forrest Griffin loses to Rampage I think that will be a brilliant fight also. Until then he needs to learn his place in MMA.

Comment by JV
2008-05-30 11:53:03

This is what I mean Soku wasnt and still isnt that proven. Shogun should have taken the fight to teach Soku a lesson right? And Soku calling out Shogun, IMO is so he can prove himself. And after Shoguns performance with Forrest, Shogun also has to prove himself.

shoguns performance with forrest? JV, by this time either ppl don’t know of shogun’s injury or they choose not to accept it. It’s ok really, but you guys are in a minority. Wait until you see what shogun is like 100% health, and not in a honeymoon weekend period. Once he’s 100% focus and health as he will be when he returns you’ll see what I’m talking about and I promise you’ll say to yourself; “soko, really?”. asking shogun to fight soko now is like asking chuck to fight houston alexander. they’re not ready yet.

I am a big Soko fan, but he doesnt yet deserve to fight Shogun. Y would Shogun waste his time with Soko, when he wants to Kick Liddell’s head off (Shogun will beat Chuck)!

Soko is just trying to talk crap to market himself.

Like other people suggested, Soko should either fight Rashad, but even better:

Soko vs. Tiago Silva!…That would be a real War!

Linx: The torn ACL was in his training after the Forrest fight, wasnt it? If it was torn in the fight, I dont think he would have been able to move around.

John: You were probably saying the same thing when Chuck fought Wanderlei. What makes Shogun any different? IMO, I think Shogun would get destroyed worse.

Comment by roy

he tore it again in training and it has a huge affect on some one to fight or train with no acl, i like wanderlei but shogun is the better and taller of the two and when he is healthy you will change your mind.

Comment by linx
2008-05-30 14:33:32

He tore it before his fight with forrest, then again during training like roy said. you can move around, just can’t do much with it. Shogun is not as aggressive as wandy, but he’s way more intelligent fighter and overall way better than wandy IMO. besides, a wandy vs chuck II fight I see wandy taking it, he fought against chuck in his debut fight in the UFC, you can already tell he’s getting more used to the cage and more comfortable. his killer instic is back (it was missing during the chuck fight).

Comment by JV
2008-05-30 16:09:27

Come on linx, dont cheapen Chuck’s win. If Wanderlei wasnt himself it was cause of Chuck’s hammers he’s got in his fists. I’m a big fan of both and I would love to see Chuck/Wandy 2. Right now I want Chuck to fight Shogun first though, just cause I think that would give Chuck his title fight.

Comment by linx
2008-05-30 17:21:09

JV, chuck won that fight fair and square, no excuses, I keep saying it was wandy’s first fight inside the cage in a long time but that shouldn’t take away any shine in the victory for chuck, he fought a good game and won. But I still think wandy will get revenge :)

Yeah, everyone back then wanted to fight Shogun, he was the guy to beat and was undefeated etc. So for him to claim Shogun was ducking is just pigeon turd. If Shogun was to face off against every new joe that came along chanting his name he’d be fighting every month. Shogun had earned the right to only take meaningful matches, not ones against randomn newcomers.

And yes, I’ll be curious to see which Shogun comes out next. We know from Shogun vs Lil Nog that he can all out war for 3 - 10 minute rounds. That was one of the best fights I think I’ve ever seen. I admit that I still wonder whether he and Wandy were roiding back then. We’ll see. Wandy seems to be getting the hang of the cage.

Shogun was widely regaurded as the #1 205lb fighter in the world before the Forest fight, …don’t ever remeber hearing that about Soku. I am a big fan of both, but like many of you have said, Soku needs to slow down a little. Next fights:
Wandy/Evans (contender shot for Wandy ONLY- only because they could fight in August if the UFC wanted Chuck/Shogun wont be able to fight till the end of the year probably - and because everyone wants to see Rampage/Wandy in the octogan. Rashad needs 2 wins for a title shot. Plus, if Wandy beats Rampage & Chuck beats Shogun it leads in excellently for a Chuck as the challenger rematch w/Wandy)
Chuck/Shogun
Thiago/Lyoto
Soku/Irvin
Reljic/Bonnar or Alexander

Sorry everyone, but I think Soko would kick Shogun’s ass. Shogun is the most over rated fighter in history. Soko has better standup and I don’t think Shogun can hold him on the ground. It’s because we don’t jump ships when something like that happens, and frankly we all know what happened. Injury + wedding is not a good match for MMA. But I don’t bring this up unless someone starts talking bad about shogun and as if he was on roids. That’s why we back him up, that’s what good fans do for their heroes. Wanderlei Silva lost three times in a row and we didn’t give up, now he’s back. Shogun will bounce back from that loss too, in the meantime I’ll keep my mouth shut unless someone start talking crap like “roids, bums, and Pride fighters can’t compete” stuff again.

Comment by b.w.
2008-05-30 15:38:47

i see were your coming from and do respect your loyalty, just dont let it blind you. wandi backed it up with his fists this past weekend let shgun do the same. people should not bring up roids at all unless there is concrete proof. i dont like it when people say that as well, with no evidence at all. some of the pride fighters have had a hard time adjusting to the cage and some havent. the ones that are sucsessful have moved to america and trained in good camps w/ other good fighters. that makes all the difference in the world to me.

Soko got schooled by a Brazilian named Machida. The Ufc, embarrassed by the investment, then tosses Soko a fat japanese tomato can and now Soko thinks he’s ready for the big time. I hate to be the one to break it to every one but you don’t just develop a ground game in a couple of months. Give him a few years but for now he’s just a big mouth with too much hair.

Para toda a galera do brasil, este cara soko nem sabe o que ta vindo se este cara brigar com rua. Recebesse uma pancada da nada! Falou
