I love the UFC, but…you pretty much needed to be drunk to enjoy the card. Betweeen the dissapointing stoppage w/B Vera and the second point taken from N. Marquardt….what a bore!!! The Bisping fight wasn’t good enough to be on Spike and Matt Hughes looks to be on his way out! I will say the undercard fights after the Main Event were better than most of the main action!!

Now I know why this wasn’t free on Spike…..Between the Elite XC/CBS and this poor UFC Card….the average guy would never buy another PPV again!!

This card is on my birthday, and considering I’ve been sober 2 1/2 years (I know, I’m a quitter), I guess this card will be my birthday gift. I like Bisping and Vera, and always look for an opportunity to see Hughes get beat (even though it happens rarely).

On a side note, I really hope that after Kimbo’s fight this sat, they put him against a top 50 opponent. I promise if he fights Mike Tyson, Gannon or Ken Shamrock, I will cancel my showtime subscription, and not watch another elite show (except Nick Diaz. Even if he fought Ricco Rodriguez, I’d respect him more. I give him credit for training, being humble and soft spoken, but I would have a chance at beating the guys he’s fighting.

Good luck w/ that Vicodin scrip….in almost 18 years I’ve seen countless people in sobriety led to destruction w/ a few painkillers…anyway……
WAR Hughes, and if he loses he is done, except for a couple more paydays….Vera may be shut up w/ another loss to a real heavyweight…. and I really don’t have anything against The count, but I really wanted to see him against Leben, he will get past Day and then I look forward to him fighting someone legit, but all these middleweights have to look forward to is The Spider, sucks to be them…….I’m a little sick as I’d like to see Kimbo fight Shamrock, Ken would finally get a win a good paycheck from the sport he helped to found, would not begrudge him gettin paid

I don’t think its a plain “if you don’t like it, don’t buy it” argument to be made here. MMA fans constantly have to watch out what they can get for their buck and in times of WEC with Faber-Pulver, DREAM4 and Affliction card coming up, its wise to consider spending a limited budget on cards that sound promising.

After the rather weak card in ireland and this card I really hope the UFC will visit europe the next time with a championship fight again. Watching the event on TV is fine, but I’d rather go watch it live in an arena again, as - I am sure - most british/european fans would like to.

2008-05-30 13:03:13

It’s not like the UFC didn’t try.

The main event — ideally — was going to be St. Pierre vs. Fitch. Then Henderson vs. Franklin. And I’m sure Anderson Silva was considered … but his only real challenger at this point is Yushin Okami, who is recovering from a broken hand.

So to get Hughes vs. Alves is not that bad when you put it into perspective, in addition to the other solid main card bouts.

UFC 85 was a victim of circumstance. And all things considered this main card turned out solid.

Comment by YouTapped
2008-05-30 13:26:17

Agreed about the original card, but still: people bought the tickets with St.Pierre or maybe Franklin in mind. Some friends of mine who planned on going sold their tickets on ebay with losses and I can also understand their frustration.

You are right about it being solid - in my opinion due to the Swick-Davis and Vera-Werdum fights - but then again its a relative term considering the other cards we got upcoming.

Thats why it always says “card subject to change”. its the price you pay buynig tickets so early before the event. either you wait until the card is close and risk not getting tickets, or you buy them early and risk not seeing the matches you want due to various circumstances.

While there are some tomato can worthy opponents on this card, I’d look to Marquardt/Leites or Swick/Davis as a great fight, if not great marketing. Neither will increase ppv buys to the casual observer or armchair quarterback. We’ll leave that up to elite xc as they pull out all the stops by opening the show with Busta (????? insert snide remark). That said, I’ll take Bisping/Day for $1000, alex. Us good ‘ole canadian boys know a wee bit more about “dooms” day. Perhaps it’s a homer bet, but I’ll go with day at +260. Call it a hunch… hehehe. Begin your ridicule now gentlemen…

mate you could not be any further from being correct as far as Bisping/Day, Bisping completely gave him a lesson in MMA overpowering him in every aspect of fighting.Like i have heard from one or two others said Bisping could have finished this earlier but chose to give him more punishment rather than finishing him with a choke or a couple of other holds he could of put him in.Anyway great fight from Bisping ,he is looking very menacing.

Vera is one of my fave fighters and Werdum is no joke despite his Arlovski fight.
Marquardt vs Leites could be a cracker.
Swick vs Davis another good fight maybe :)
Sanchez vs Hardonk is a good match up shame it’s not on the main bill.

Well you don’t hear anything, you read it so you don’t have to read it if you don’t want. But honestly with all of the switches they’ve had this should have been free on spike. Not saying that it isn’t PPV worthy but a nice treat for the hardcore fans would be nice. Not to mention making it free on Spike a week after the XC promotion would give them better ratings. Its a business move gone wrong but I’ll still be viewing this matchup

On paper people may say it sucks because it lacks supposedly ‘big fights’ but………
I was at Nations Collide in Manchester last year and the main card looked very good. When infact 3 of the 5 main fights were shite. (congo/silva, arlovski/werdum, machida/heath). The undercard was, on paper, going to be borin but all 5 fights were very entertaining. Dont write this card off as you could be suprised.

Quick update:

http://dnevnik.hr/sport/ostali_sportovi/cro-cop-zbog-ozljede-odgodio-borbu.html

CroCop has cancelled the grappling match due to a light injury. He could have competed, but to him getting fully recovered for the 21st of july was more important when he will fight Jerome LeBanner.

Too bad, I thought it could be funny, but MMA > pure-grappling in this case, so as long as he has no excuse for a poor performance against LeBanner I am cool with it. The grappling match was definetly not what urged me to buy DREAM 4 in the first place anyway.

Good! cro cop needs to stick to MMA and forget about grappling. He already took too many blows to his name recently.

I’m from Scotland but not lucky enough to have been at a UFC event.

If the Birmingham rumour is true in October, I might very well be there. My in-laws stay there :)

My new neighbor just got DSL and has a pretty sweet wirelss connection. Sitting on my porch with the laptop, I get a PERFECT signal. ANd to think that I was just about to call Comcast and add internet because the wife signed up to sell avon.

I wonder when Martin Kampann is fighting. THat’s the only reason I risked ruining results of prelim matches that might be shown later during the PPV…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEVIN AND JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your new neighbor just got d*ck sucking lips? lol. Sorry that’s what DSL meant when I was younger, you kids think it has something to do with computers (I’m 38 by the way).

Thanks everyone. It was a great card. John-Stradamus strikes again.

I lost $500 on Marcus Davis and I still managed to win $275 with my wagering pin point percision.

I bet on:
Leites
Werdum
Marcus Davis
Bisping
Alves

4 out of 5, not bad at all.

Seriously my picks will have to be on sale from here on out because I am just getting scary good at predicting these fights.

VM: Sorry your parlays fell through cause of Hughes…I am getting sick of telling you that alves is the real deal, yet you still ignore him…Get wit it my friend!

Lets be honest though, did Leites really win? I don’t think so and I would bet MOST would agree. You picked Werdum to win, but they NEVER got a chance to see who is better. That was BY FAR the worst stoppage in history. Vera was UNTOUCHED. John ,your other picks were good, but these 2 were as much luck as Werdume and Leites victories were luck that the refs were SNIFFING GLUE. Oh ya , Happy Birthday John and Kevin as well.

Gord, quit hatin on the Brazilians! They’re taking over the UFC and eventually the WORLD! As far as Leites goes, he’s not the one who used illegal moves in the fight. That’s ultimately what made the difference.

Thanks to everyone!

As for Leites and Werdum bets….Hey I bet a nice amount of money on both fighters, and I will take the win anyway I can.

IMO, Leites won that Fight. Here me out. It was a very close fight. Because the fight was so close, we have to take into consideration that BIG ILLEGAL Knee. Like Rogan said, weather Leites could continue or not, he would never recover from that knee 100%, so I think THales deserved to win. I will admit that the elbow to the head was not illegal.

As for Werdum…..Did he TKO Vera? NO, but he mounted him and I would say that about 90% of the time a fighter mounts another fighter is usually OVER! In this case, with so little time left in the round, the fight should have not been stopped.

What the hell though, I lost $500 on Davis, I wil take all the wins I can, any way that I could!

John-stradamus just tells you who to bet on, my job isnt to tell you if the decision was fair….U guys asked for the winners, and I delivered 4 out of 5 as USUAL!

Stop Doubting my boy Thiago!
