Jesse Holland back again for another round of discussion with MMA guru Ariel Helwani at MMARated.com previewing the EliteXC primetime CBS event “Saturday Night Fights” that takes place tomorrow (Saturday, May 31) from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

In addition, we went over the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) blockbuster show set for the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on Sunday, June 1, which features the 145-pound showdown between featherweight champion Urijah Faber and challenger Jens Pulver.

Here are some specific discussion points:

  • The lack of promotion in the NYC/NJ metro area for the Elite XC show
  • The historical significance of this weekend’s cards
  • Is Kimbo for real?
  • Does James Thompson have a chance?
  • Gina Carano’s place in history
  • How lucky is Scott Smith?
  • The hype surrounding Faber vs. Pulver
  • How does Pulver solve the mystery that is Urijah Faber?

As always, a big thanks to Ariel for having me on. And an even bigger thanks to site commandant Mania for having a voice like Alf — thus allowing me to do so many guest appearances. Check it out here when you get the chance.

And don’t forget to tune into CBS tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET and Versus at 9 p.m. on Sunday!

Here is what I would have for each of these questions. Not that it matters but since I can’t listen to the audio its the best I can do.
A lack of promotion was the problem they had when the Fedor Lindland fight was around. The promotion on CBS is great but when I have regular television I don’t watch basic tv, it scares the hell out of me with disturbing commercials, they need to find a good way to promote the event but since I don’t know what they have done up until now I can’t speculate much further.

There is no historical significance for these cards, the only fight on here that might fall under that category is Gina Young, which are two realitvely new fighters so I’m not sure if the fight will be a good or a bad thing, if one fighter folds it will create a great uprage of why women can handle MMA.

Kimbo is a great stiker but he may have come in a little too old for the MMA community. Once he gets a good test to prove his ground came we can comment on wether or not he is for real.

* Does James Thompson have a chance? – NO

Gina IMO will lose this fight, her place in history will be erased and Young may take the spot light (Young just isn’t as pretty)

Scott Smith is atleast a B level fighter, he puts on a good show but he just doesn’t pace himself right. He stand a good chance but probably will not beat Lawler unless he has some ground game planned (not likely)

I’m reallying pulling for Pulver in the fight but they hype is based around Pulver proving he is not over the hill and Faber proving he can hang with the big dawgs. If Pulver wants to win he has to try to out hustle Faber, he needs to use his boxing technique to keep Faber on his feet, going down with Faber is not the greatest idea IMO, Pulver’s ground game might have choked out Sonnen but it isn’t going to work that easy against Faber. Maybe Faber will get a big head and try to take Pulver on standing, thats my best bet for Pulver winning.

Main thing isn’t about Gina’s place in history, it’s will she make weight, or will it all of a sudden be another catch weigght

A voice like Alf. lol

Really the only fight I’m interested in is Scott Smith vs Robie Lawler. The rest will just be to amuse me lol.

Now that is funny!!!

If he would take his training seriously he could be a force. Some people just can’t help but squander the gifts they are given……

Is anyone going to be placing any money on either of theese events??? I got some questions as well…

Does anyone think that the odds on Kimbo, -450, justify a bet?

At +250, is it worth betting a small amount on Kaitlin Young?

Is Baroni vs Villasenior a coinflip situation?

At -350, is it still worth betting on Faber?

I do not see Kimbo losing to James Thompson. Even if Thompson tries to take the fight to the ground, I think Kimbo’s sprawl will be good enough to defend his weak takedown attempts. Also, with Thompson’s glass jaw, I don’t see him lasting more than 3 punches into the fight. Therefore, I will probably be betting on Kimbo. It is just about a lock.

I am going to be rooting for Gina to win of course, but the fact that she hasn’t been training and Kaitlin Young trains at the same place as Sherk and has a muay thai and kickboxing background as well really has me worried. I still see Gina as the favorite, but I’d feel much better betting on Young if she was more like +325.

Baroni vs Villasenior. If Baroni can catch Joey early, he can KO him. If the fight goes to the second round, Baroni tires and either loses a decision or gets finished in round 3. This is actually an interesting fight – it will be exciting for sure. I am still undecided on who I think will win, but I am leaning towards Joey.

I do not see Urijah Faber losing at 145 unless he fights Kid Yamamoto or some other Japanese fighter. However, -350 are pretty steep odds going up against an udefeated 145 lb Jens Pulver. Any left hand by Jens can end this fight. The only loss on Faber’s record was due to strikes (to Tyson Griffin of course). But I see Faber as just simply being too athletic for Pulver. Then again, that’s what people were saying about Cub Swanson as well. But Cub certainly is not Urijah in any way shape or form. Urijah’s wrestling skills are going to allow him to dictate where the fight goes, so if he is getting the worst of the standup, he can take it to the ground. That is, as long as he doesn’t get 1 punch KO’d. I like Faber, but I’ve been a little evil fan for years. I hate betting against who I will be rooting for, and I’ll be rooting for Jens. But at only +250, I feel a bet on Jens is throwing my money away.

How does everyone else feel about these fights? Its pretty slow today, so I’ll post in another thread too… Sorry if I inconvenience anyone…

wouldn’t recommend laying down anything substancial on brawlers. yea i think they’re all coinflips. that being said, life is a gamble n got some chump change riding on…

lawler – more technical of a boxer recently and KOd high level competition (not by lucky prayer)
baroni – more power, better chin, always does damage, and been through wars. hoping that it will cancel out technique in this 1. great deal @ almost even $.
lawler + kimbo – can’t imagine the posterboys losing in the debut.
baroni + carano – just trying to juice up the baroni bet wit some caranolone. lol.

nothing at minus 300 or worse is worth it by itself.

Faber and Pulver, and Lawler and smith, those are what this is all about. And this is descent step up for Kimbo as well, slowly but surely he is movin on up his competition.

I am kinda disappointed that all week the fights that were broken down were the EXC shows and it kinda overhyped and overshadowed the WEC. It always seems the WEC fights are super exciting and hardly a word about ‘em (besides Jens and Faber). Miguel Torres is gonna put on a show. Not trying to get all grass roots here. No matter what, two free shows on CBS and Versus is a great weekend. You guys pumped or what? This weekend is gonna be tits!!

i think kimbo is better than we all think. lets face it i know fighting in the back yard is diff than MMA but it is a fight and he has alot of experience and i am positive that his mental game is there and with that said the right traing (which he is getting)he will surprise us in the future plus he is doing nothing but helping the world of MMA i mean there are talking about him on prime time ESPN. Robbie Lawler……. A BEAST. this might rub people wrong but yes i am a huge matt hughes fan,hit squad, miletech and so on. i sort of lost sight of lawler since the nick diaz fight but i have recently watched the complete destruction of frank trigg and ninja rua……this guy is for real!!! cant wait. Pulver vs Faber……….boy am i pulling for jens…love that guy…reality….Faber….unless left hook lands ….lights out rest of fights who cares
