Your right we are fans giving opinions but opinions can be wrong. So using facts to take apart opinions is what we do. I like that you said in the last 6 fights, but who did the losses come from? One guy so the arguement is still unwarrented. Not only did they come from one guy but they came from the current residing champ and the current number 1 P4P fighter(arguably GSP or Silva). His last 10 fights he is 7-3 only losing to the two current champs of the LW and WW divisions. That adds in a win against GSP himself, Trigg, and Renato V. The man has an over all record of 42-6 and has lost to 4 different guys. Thats a very impressive record and never once has he ducked a fighter. The point of the arguement still remains, you don't have enough evidence to convince anyone that Hughes is over the hill, he may want to retire at some point in time but remember what happened when everyone was questioning Randy for being over the hill after he came back from retirement? and Randy didn't even beat anyone important IMO, he beat a lazy Sylvia and an overrated Gonzaga and people called him the best in the world. Hughes has defended the title more times than anyone and as soon as he losses to an extremely skilled competitor he is written off. So what happens when Hughes fights Serra and dominates him in one fight as opposed to two like GSP, you guessed it and I knew you were thinking it but Serra is not top competition. Well I hope he does face Kos, Diego, and Fitch because the only guy who stands a chance in my mind out of the whole WW division (excluding GSP and Penn) is Kos. IMO

Yeah, nothing to take away from GSP - he's a Pro! I just get irritated with everyone talking about GSP vs Penn for the title when they could be fighting for the #1 contender spot.

Smokes, totally respect your opinion. My point in bringing up those names is that in his last 6 fights he is 4-2 and the wins were not top competition (except maybe broken BJ). And as far as giving biased opinions that is all this site is about. We are not journalists reporting the news, we are fans giving our opinions.

See my above comment, takedown defense isn't something that is easy to do. You can learn it easy but to be able to defend a great takedown is alot harder than you think. If that was the case then the strikers of these days would be dominating the grapplers and wrestlers every fight. Its hard to defend a takedown when you swing at someone hit him in the face and he drops to your hips and tackles you. Its hard to defend a takedown when your balancing on one leg and the guy has your other leg tightly gripped or even when both are gripped then you've got no balnce what so ever. I'll tell you what thought if takedowns are so easy to defend I would like to think that defending a punch is pretty easy to do as well. I suppose this fight will be going no where since Hughes could learn to defend a punch in a day and Alves can learn to defend a takedown in a day. Its all good.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to comment back but here you go. I know the Hughes slam isn't coming back, not many people know why he did such a slam considering you can lose your control of the other guy and he can end up on top. The slam was earlier in his career and it was used to get help from his corner which he doesn't need as much anymore. Its just a really cool looking attack that gets a crowd riled up so we'd like to see it again. Also you named guys who were strikers, grapplers, and veterans of the sport who Hughes not only took down but he dominated each of them. When making an arguement its best not to point to a fight where someone was dominated. What your doing man is calling Hughes a has been based on fights that have not been. You get me, its fair to label him that if he were to lose to Alves or anybody else in the division but he hasn't so your premature. Also to John I don't mean to be rude but have you ever wrestled? Defending a takedown is very very hard when the level of the takedown is increased. Defending a takedown against a guy like Tito is easy because you keep him a bit at distance with strikes but for someone who will eat a punch he'll get right in on you which gives him more force to snap you at your knees or hips or do a twist to take you down. I think your getting a little ahead of yourselves when it comes to Hughes, his takedowns are extrodinary and his skill on the ground is just as great. Alves best chance of standing with Hughes is to utilize his stikes more than his legs, his knees aren't bad to use but if he kicks they can be caught. I suppose my only advice to you two is to just chill until after the fight, then you'll be justified in calling him a has been if he loses. But until then just continue giving your educated arguements on the fight and not biased opinions on a certain fighter.

Don't you worry TonyDrip.

GSP is down in Brazil for 2 weeks training BJJ with Gracie Barra and Nova Unaio - as well as working on his boxing and wrestling down there with other top guys in each discipline.
